macbook was my first and only lappy
HP Dv8350us.. until the hard drive died and I didn't bother to order another one because it used IDE connectors.. Too ancient.
I don't recall the model #, but it was a Dell with a 15" screen and only a 40GB HD. Every Dell that I've ever had, came with defective/finicky DVD drives. HP, Lenovo, and Toshiba didn't have this problem (at least as has been my own personal experience).
Siemens-Nixdorf (something) 485sx 33MHz, 120MB HDD, no sound card
Got it as my first PC for studies in 1994, It was on sale, as newer and better laptops was...
The Nix-sie replaced my beloved Amiga 500, (Yes I kept using a comp that had been presented ten years earlier).
Back to the Nix-sie. It had a Dual-scan 11.6 screen and after a few year the line was clearly visible+several dead pixels. The 120MB HDD seemed like something that a normal user never could fill up.
Got myself CD-ROM connected to the printerport?. Upgraded the RAM from 4MB to enormous 12MB. Had a 9-pin printer with it. running the DOS6.22 and Win3.11(for workgroups?)
In 1999 the Nix-sie died, the screen was a joke and the Ni-Cad battery dead since years back.
Replaced Nix-sie with a Cyrix Desktop, win95 with a soundcard and obsolete...

Why not post your first laptop.
My first is the one I'm one a Compaq (CQ50).
I dont remember the model number but it was some cheap Toshiba from walmart. Since then it has been a compaq,hp (crashed in less than 6 hours after it ran windows update), dell inspiron 15r(hard drive crashed after 4 months), now Im back to a toashiba satellite.
It was Acer Aspire 3985 with 30GB HDD, 512MB RAM and 1.6GHz processor. It was built-in with 14.1" screen. Now I have higher clocks on my phone..

It was a HP 15". About 5 years ago. The only thing I remember about it is it's weight and the pretty decent altec lansing speakers. On the latest Mac Air 13" now

I just wanted a Macbook to develop on, play games, and watch movies, and I had to have the 1980x1200 resolution or it would of been pointless to get. I wanted the max the device out so that I wouldnt have to worry about not having the hardware needed to do whatever I needed to do.

The MB pros are sweet machines. They're solid and well-engineered, and will generally last longer than the cheaper windows laptops which makes them worth the extra money in my opinion.

Check around at sites like TigerDirect, Amazon, or NewEgg and you'll surely find a deal. I'm currently using a Gateway NV53 I got from TigerDirect for $400 plus tax with free shipping and it's great, especially for the price (500GB HD, 4GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium, AMD Athlon II X2 M300, 15.6" 16:9 HD LED LCD, DVD-Super Multi DL drive, built-in webcam, microphone, and multi-in-one card reader, etc.).
I do recommend you stay away from HP or any of their brands (Compaq specifically), as they tend to have terrible hardware and load their computers up with soooooo much junk you'll spend a day cleaning it up. Go with a Dell, unless there's a really compelling reason to do otherwise, and make sure you check the option to have them NOT fill it up with junkware if they make that option available.
Hope this helps!
I was thinking either dell or Toshiba. I never had a problem with the Toshiba tower computer we had, until it fried itself. And dell, well everything else we have owned desktop wise has affl a dell since like 99. Might check out dell when I'm closer to home and my battery isn't 35% D:

Your best bet is to get a deal off ebay ive goten a bunch at like 4 in the morning because theres alot less people to compete with. If your looking for something cheap its not going to be powerful same thing in phone world too. If your lucky you could mabe get a laptop with a broken screen and replace the screen and save a bunch but you have to do alot of research. Stay away from dv7s and dv6000s and dv9000s they have video chip issues where they stop showing video(hps version of the red ring of death). Craigslist might be a good idea too becouse when people are poor they sell **** for what ever they can get but craigslist has no return policy like paypal and ebay do. Good luck i hope i gave you some good insight.

Not always true. I have an Acer that the CPU can be upgraded. I found a faster one on newegg but didn't get it. You need to do your homework before buying crap too. Know the CPU, chipset, form factor of the CPU, etc. You will also produce more heat and consume more battery with a bigger engine in it. You might be able to go the route of replacing the hard drive with a solid state and faster/lower cas ram. I think you'll notice more of a speed improvement with those two things than just a CPU. Put the maximum amount of ram your laptop chipset can support. Get matched ram (don't mix different brands and models of ram). My old 1.2 c2d Intel Acer can run circles around my gf's laptop that is years newer and faster CPU than mine. I just put the maximum, fastest, matched ram in it, a 7200rpm drive with a bigger cache, Arctic silver heat sink compound on the CPU, gpu, and (I forgot the third major chip, I'm having a brain fart). I also put an old and small heat sink on the brain fart chip. Hers is like maybe a 2.2 newer generation dual core Intel and mine is still quicker. I don't know why but it is. Way back when,I did a lot of research before I bought the Acer and knew under it's hood was no slouch for the price. It wasn't no alien ware but it was decent.
Why don't you post your budget, and what you plan on using the laptop for? I'm sure people will be more than happy to suggest stuff to you if they come across something!

If you want to dev on a laptop, you need something of the i5 or i7 range, as compiling takes a lot of CPU and RAM. However, for the price of a good laptop, you could get a really good computer. I would recommend building your own over a laptop, but if it has to be a laptop, something in the $700 range would be good.
Look at Samsung's ultrabooks.

If you want a good laptop with build quality in mind, look for Asus and Lenovo ones with a Sandy bridge processor along with a Nvidia GPU.
I personally like the Asus G & K series along with the Lenovo Y series (570).
Going to warn you that if you build your own then watch out for pricing. Currently most of the tech companies are overpricing everything due to the thailand lfoods and shortages of HDD's.
But if you do decide to make your own computer, visit places such as tomshardware.com / overclockers.net / hardocp.com / anandtech.com and ask around...
Just sayin

I heard that for durability macbooks are the way to go and for max performance (what I need) PC's are better. Im also a big DIY person so I need a laptop that when the warranty ends, I can take it apart without much hassle. At one time i wanted a macbook but I just dont feel like its for me.

I found 2 laptops that im interested in: Samsung series 7 chronos and ASUS N55SF I liked the Samsung cause it was portable and powerful and same for the ASUS.
I don't see whats wrong with dell, Im using a dell that I've had for almost 4 years even though at one point it broke but it wasn't my fault. Dells in my opinion seem like they can take a beating and keep on running my processor gets average ratings in the windows score index and overall there weren't any major problems that I've had with Dell
Any Samgsung series 7 or 9 are REALLY nice. i'd definietly recommend em.
Without any doubt Dells are good. But due to their Brand name, the offer price is high and when compared to Samsung, not only the price is less, but also you'll get major increment in the hardware specs.
An example should be a Dell Inspiron comes with :-
Intel core i3 2nd gen/3GB RAM/320GB HDD/14" screen/1.3MP cam/No OS/Glossy screen
whereas a Samsung (no idea about model) comes with :-
Intel core i3 2nd gen/4GB RAM/750GB HDD/15" screen(with numpad keys)/1.3MP cam/No OS/Matt-finish non reflective screen
And the price is, Samsung still is under for some penny's than Dell Inspiron.
Not sure whether its true, but heard Samsung provides "their own" produced hardwares to their Laptops except processor. But in case of Dell/HP/Vaio the HDD should be Seagate/Samsung or RAM should be of Transcend's.
Just don't buy any Toshiba...

I'm using a Airstash with my Nexus and it works great. I would think that the Wi-Drive would be fine as well as they are quite similar. If you're looking to buy a wi-drive, I would also look at the Airstash as it is more versatile and portable.
I have something similar to the Airstash but more akin to a Wi-Drive.

Still figuring it out but I have already had videos streaming from it on the N7.

loaded it up with mp3 and bluray rips and it serves as my portable media center
it streams the stuff off the SSD, only complaint i have is that it takes like 30 to 40 sec to power up

Yikes. 30-40 seconds? The Airstash is ready to go almost instantaneously.
I have the 16gb wi-drive by kingston
I was able to pick up the 16gb wi-drive by kingston for less than $40 included shipping.
Plays music fine with wi-drive (1.0.0.37, but this app is crashing two many times on Nexus 7.
Plays music videos with third party software fine.
It is not smb server.
It is has a battery that is charged via usb cable (cable is better than the one that comes with Nexus 7) and own power adapter. Battery lasted for 4 hours and 48 minutes for me. I played 101.5 mp3's during that time and listen on N7 that went from 100 percent to 51 percent during that time. I took almost four hours to recharge to full on wi-drive.
What I find the weak spot of this setup is software by Kingston, it crashed to many times.
MFG states 4 hours on charge have not test if that is true yet. This is a very small device (edit) unit gets very warm when on, would not put in pocket for this reason.

this one is similar to the wi-drive. Cheaper and longer battery, very tempting ...

Last I checked, they did not have an Android App for it. Only iOS.
Ops... they do now... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Transcend.SJCloudNEON
Not many people have reviewed it though. You really have to be careful with some of these devices since without a good app to go with them, they can end up not working so well.
When the Wi-Drive came out and the first Droid app for it, it didn't play very well. The Kindle Fire version actually did, but using it on other android devices didn't. when I last played with the Wi-Drive, they had updated the app and it worked quite well on the Nexus 7.
So it is more than just getting the hardware device... it has to have good software behind it as well.
