[q] how safe/secure are roms/custom firmware? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are concerns that these custom built ROMS have hidden features which can "phone home" private data to the authors.
In light of these, what assurance can we get that our data are safe/secure when we use these ROMS/firmware?

you can't know whether you safe or no ,
but that is why is XDA-Developers doesn't give anyone ( recognize Developer )
my point is : all the devs in XDA are safe and trusted , who i know in my trust list
Alter (Overcome)
spacemoose1 ( Honeycomb etc
Tech ( CM7 rom for our tab )
RottoHammer
ChainFire ~~
humberos
oldmacnut
koxudaxi
DiP7
(those who i know) sorry if i forgot someone )
and many many many devs are here are all trusted
so don't worry you are under XDA Warranty
out of XDA we don't give a damn about what they are build you are at your own up there

[Q] Best ROM

Hi guys...I'm Italian and my english is not perfect...excuse me! I have a Samsung Galaxy S and I want to mod it...I think that my phone is not fully exploited... I need a ROM that exploits it. My parameters of choice are stability, sensitivity and speed... What is the ROM that you suggest me? Thanks guys!
All new roms based on jpy are really fast and awesome. Just read the features of all the roms and choose one.
My favorite ; darky"s rom
The best rom is always someone else's rom. ..

You're right.
@OP
If you want a modular ROM where you can add pieces of components together, go for Doc's ROM.
If you want a great JPY ROM, go for Jim_Panse's ROM.
You can switch between ROMs as you like
Happy flashing & merry X-Mas!
I started of with the Darky ones, runs fast and smooth. Except for crappy GPS but thats not his fault, just samsung that ****ed somthing up.
Havent tried DOC's one though.

I think in terms of speed, all JPY ROMs are the same.
It's just about the customizing the ROM chef did
Not another best rom thread
We appreciate your willingness to start playing around with your android phone. However, to fully have the android experience, you will have to do what most of us do and that is flashing roms. Lots of them. Then you will know yourself which one you prefer.
BTW, this questions should be in the General section, not Development.
First you need to mention a few things more , like the firmware versions you are curently running.
Anyhow , Your first choice should be the official kies update that you may have in Italy at the moment. Maybe if you has in an eclair rom and you update to froyo is enough for your needs. Latest roms as said before are very good in terms of stability, sensitivity and speed.
If you need something beyond that , i would suggest Darkys rom ( no offence to the other guys ) which is easy to upgrade to and had a lot of goody's pre-installed
After that you should be able to fully understand the differences of every rom and make your choice.
Almost all guys here support their roms ( updates ) , they have detailed instructions , FAQ e.t.c. and you can also be helpful too , as a 4rth layer tester*
*
1rst layer = creator
2nd layer = mod creators that the rom include
3rd layer = Testers following the rom that know most of the common issues
4rht layer(us) = Testers that have fully read and understand the instructions and despite following them to the letter , they experience some kind of bug , so they report it
P.S. no actual layers exist , i just made them up to explain
IMO, i'd say last Darky's rom and Doc's.

[Q] what is voodoo (sound\color) ?

what is voodoo (sound\color) mean ?????
and if any body have a lesson about the kernals
cuz i don't lnow actuality what it is ?
A kernel is the software on the phone that lets the hardware interact with the operating system (the firmware).
Voodoo Sound/Colour were projects led by Supercurio, a member here at xdadevelopers. He has done an amazing job working with the audio capabilites of the i9000, fixing a lot of it's shortcomings. As well, he has given us the ability to tweak the colour of our screens.
To have either, they need to be supported by your kernel. If you check the thread of the kernel you'd like to use, it should have either of these (or both) listed; if it doesn't, they are not implemented in the kernel, and therefore not supported.
If your kernel has them, download the 'Voodoo Control' app for the Android Market. Optionally, you can probably find a thread for it here, on xda. The app gives you complete control over the options that these features offer.
reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaly Thanks man
I use a CM7 on my I9000

You're very welcome.
Fugumod, Platypus, TalonMTD, and Glitch are some CM7 kernels off the top of my head.

BLN on i9001??

Is there anyone that knows where to find or plan to port bln kernel on our i9001??
as far as i know, bln depends on the bln.c file and the liblights module
ask someone like manveru0 or neldar to help

I've once included it testwise in my kernel. I was too lazy to compile new liblights so I've taken them from the internet. Anyway the whole thing freezed my device everytime I activated bln.
There are several reasons why I've not included bln till today:
1. You need an extra tool just to activate bln thus another service running and more memory used.
2. You need to change your liblights which ain't a problem so far. But what if you wanna go back to a non bln version? You then need to copy the old liblights back to your device.
Anyway BLN has definitely not the top priority in kernel patching for the moment (reducing battery drain is more important right now).
Ok thanks a lot .
I'll wait until then, because i'm so interested on that but i have no idea or enougth knowledge to do it.
It's been a while since November. Any progress in this issue? Dou you need people to test?
I asked sakindia123 in its kernel post, because this feature has to be included in a kernel and his is the only custom kernel available, besides from the stock-mod by crybert.
Well manveru0's Feamod kernel is also customized. And he already tried it but found it low priority.
Sent from my GT-I9001 using XDA App
So maybe you could try contact him but if already tried and dismissed the idea...
I don't know why he finds it low priority when it's one of the most important features in the galaxy S series' custom kernels.
In fact, it's what i miss the most from the SGSII or SGS i9000.
well since manveru0 quited the GT-i9001 dev team could be anyone else to try add (at least) BLN to our "unwanted SGS child" aka SGS+ ?

SOSA bringing rom to all 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 gingerbread devices

http://supremeosandroid.weebly.com/
Another hope to stay with salsa!!!
Sent from my HTC Salsa C510e using xda premium
should be interesting being as its based around cm7 lol...im gonna watch this
Well I contacted the dev of Sosa and told him for the support, the message was as
" Hi, my name is kunal, I have htc salsa ... ..as u may know we also have unlocked boot loaders, so we have developed odexed and deodexed roms from the Chinese and stock rom till now ......till now there are 20 roms I guess with 7 to 8 devs ..problem is we made roms from stock kernel and we don't know how to make custom one .....so we are in 2.3.3 and 2.3.5 versions ......we would like to support sosa and would like to bring the Sosa to salsa ...... As if salsa gets support, the x8 and chacha both will be supported, due to similarity ......we are trying to port cm7 but have not yet succeeded ...so it would be great if we get support from u all and make thousands happy!!!! Please reply as then I will inform other devs to contact u Thank you for ur time and support"
So he replied me back as,
" Supp dude! (Im kind of a casual talk kinda emailer just so you know in advance)! Thank you SOOO much for your SOSA support. Like Ive said to other people who have contacted me (and others I've contacted), SOSA will go towards ANY phone that can run a gingerbread Rom. If you want to, you can build CM7 from source (which is ten times easier than I thought, easier than porting IMO) the only prerequisite is that you need Ubuntu (I will give out links to some helpful tools at the end of this email). Please feel free to tell other devs to email me. I will not have a finished product as soon as I'd hoped simply because I cannot get in contact with my team at the moment. However, I understand that everyone has a life outside of development and so I do not fault them at all for this situation. I promise a product will come about as soon as possible. Lastly, if you know any other devs of other phones that are interested (my goal is to support 50 devices by the beginning of 2013, and support every 2.3 device by next summer. so we could support well over 100+ devices). Thank you for your interest
Helpful tools: 1. If you want to build cm from source you need the following (I will be using this tutorial very soon also)
A. Ubuntu 10.04 [http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/] (Do not use 12.04 because it doesn't currently support Sun Java 6 for some odd reason, I tried. Also, Cygwin is not the way to go either) -Make sure you have about 20 GB free for the Ubuntu, a typical GB build of CM will run about 6 to 10 GB of space, so just double it to be safe -Use this tutorial to build CM from source: http://www.adamwhiles.com/2012/03/15/how-to-build-cyanogenmod-from-source/
If you need any other help, I am here just for that! My email is ALLLWWAAYYSS connected to my phone so I promise unless I am swamped with something, I am fully contactable.
Thanks for the support man! "
So to all salsa devs, email him to support and for furthur steps to be taken .... Thank you
send from s***ty salsa
what is sosa anyway ?
Supreme os android means Sosa
Check the link in first post to know!

[Q] GT-P1000... ICS or ... not ?

Hello everybody...
I have a Galaxy Tab P1000 working on 2.3.3 and CWM installed.
I want to go on ICS but, honnestly, I really don't know what to do
Cyanogen, AOKP, Overcome... :silly::silly:
So, what's the differences ? I'm reading, reading, reading... and it seems to be hard to understand what bring each mod instead of installing one (your tutorials are really easy to understand for a newbie like me).
I don't want a mod where something doesn't work. My tablet is working fine actually and I don't want to screw something so... what's the best ICS mod for a P1000 ?
Thanks for your advices (and sorry for my poor english )
Two major problems.
1) best rom thread isn't allowed in xda. Try them out and find out yourself.
2) there is a q&a subforum for questions (but not for best rom question)

I tend to disagree with your response priyana. He is not asking for the "best" rom, just the differences. My suggestion is to read the development thread for each and try them out for yourself.
The best way to work out the one for you is to dive in and try them out.
Sent from my GT-I9000
Well, if your are asking for stable roms, then cm 9.1 and aokp milestone 6 are the options. dont ask for best roms.
I agree with stimpz0r that this isn't a best ROM thread, the OP is just asking the differences between the types of ROM. As long as it stays that way and doesn't become a best ROM thread then it's fine to stay. Have moved to Q&A where it belongs.
In answer to the question, as tiresome as reading and testing can be, don't give up with the reading as it's the most important part of being on XDA as so much information is available. The 1st few posts of the development threads tend to give you an overview of what's included but the main ROM types you get will be:
Custom stock - based off official ROM's with tweaks
AOSP (Android Open Source Project) - based off Google source code
CM - which is a modified AOSP experience with customisations, bug fixes etc
AOKP (Android Open Kang Project) - similar to CM as uses lots of aspects of CM but offers far more customisation options for the user
Ahem... 1st post, 1st fault
I wasn't asking for the "best rom over all the others", but more for a little help to know what kind of rom I have to look for, really sorry for the mistake.
Usually, I try to learn by myself reading on forums or on the net, but the hard part with Android (at least for me) is that a rom can work with a device but not with another who has the same Android version :silly::silly::silly:. It's not like a video game console, a PS3 is a PS3, a Wii is a Wii, no major change between the 1st and the last serie.
Thanks for your answers. I'll keep reading , but this time I'll look toward CM and Aokp first .
We all learn by reading and you'll see in my post I was siding with you
The best part of this forum is how much you learn off other members and the like-minded people you get to talk to. We were all new once so once you pick up things slowly but surely you'll also be able to share what you've learned back with so many new users always joining :good:
