lots of duplicated contacts - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have so many duplicated contacts on my phone, 1000+ and I don't want to go through all of them one by one in my gmail. Is there a faster and easier way to deal with this?

Open gmail from a PC, select contacts, then select the More actions button, select find & merge contacts.
Let Google do all the work...

Or you can remove all duplicates from phone book menu and then sync with gmail

we need an app to remove duplicate contact number

the app need to look in the contacts and if a contact number appear more than once, pick them and give the option to remove all duplicate at once. thank you to all the dev, and keep up the great work.
and or merge, After using the facebook contact photo sync I had lots of dups, but some of the new duplicates had an email for example that the original didnt have so I would like them to merge
log into your gmail and manage contacts that way, you get the option to merge contacts... thats what i did, sort by alpha check all (2-3) of the same name and hit merge
Gmail contacts does a good job. You can delete or join contacts. Probably quicker than doing it on the phone.
also make it so you can delete all contacts at once cuz g1 isnt capable. i dont use gmail contacts because it always erases my currect contacts that werent added through gmail
u have to add the contacts via gmail.com, right? i could never get it to work, i turn all syncs off and when i check my email i just go into gmail and select refresh now
Why this gmail for all the things and always ???????????????????????

[Q] How sort google contacts?

How does one sort google contacts? situation is: i have all of my phone contacts backed up via gmail. though when i add them to my phone i also get a ton of random email addresses in my contacts on my phone, so therefore i have to go through everytime and delete all of them.
how do i create just a folder on gmail so it will only sync those contacts and not email addresses?

Going off memory (phone upstairs and to lazy to go get it) but
you can't control what syncs, but there is an option in the Captivate contacts to only show contacts with phone numbers.

Go to your contacts on gmail and move anyone you don't synced to your phone out of the "My Contacts" group.
this will still allow me to sync them to the phone?
i did realize "my contacts" does include many email addy's.
Gmail used to add all contacts to the My Contacts group including those that you just email without you specifically adding them, it no longer does that but you do need to go through the My Contacts group in Gmail and uncheck all the ones you don't want synced from the My Contacts group. They will just then be available under Other Contacts I believe in Gmail and not synced.
Stock the Captivate won't currently sync just My Contacts. Cognition gives you the option to hide the others. (In contacts>menu>more>display options>google then select which groups to display

First:
You need to make sure you enter a new contact by saving to Google.
Contacts that are on your "phone" will not transfer to Google automatically.
You can change your default save location by:
Open contacts
Press menu touch key (key on left side of your phone)
Press MORE
Press SETTINGS
Change: Save new Contacts from: Always Ask to GOOGLE
In Google it saves your contacts under the "My Contacts" tag.
Let me know if you need any other help with this.
p.s.:
If you want your contacts on Google and your phone, the easiest way is to enter them through gmail then let sync push them to your phone. Your phone (should) join the duplicates since they will have the same names and telephone #.

duplicate contacts?

I have approx 300 contacts, and out of the sudden, it's now 500 because of duplicated contacts. Weird thing is the "extra" contacts are ONLY numbers. How can I remove those duplicated ones?
I did factory reset, synced, but still get those extra numbers. Help?
Are you syncing your contacts to your gmail? If so are there duplicate in gmail as well?
Yes, they are duplicate numbers without names in gmail.
duplicate contacts
Go to your gmail acct and look under contacts, select all the contacts and look for an option called "merge contacts". That should do the trick.
The phone restores the contact from your Gmail, so no matter how many times you wipe your phone, it'll still be there if you set up syncing with your Google account. You need to delete the contact you don't want from Gmail or in the phone manually.
Go on your computer, gmail, my contacts, and fix them up. The phone syncs exactly whatever you have in the my contacts sub group.
You only need to do this once, and forever on any android phone you usb will be perfect with your contacts.

hmmm.i think what he is saying is that if we can make the default storage of contacts be in sd card so he wont need to resync after wipe data.
as far as i know it can't? don't know if others can but me myselft don't know any method to do it.
can press "Thanks" if i helped,;]
2nd post op is right can tact can be exported to sdcard with that option and after a wipe they can be restored
one other thing the op of thread can do is go to "contact to display" setting and unticking Google from the list

Personaly i think it's not good idea, things are saving in phone memory (like widgets, contacts, settings) are essential to good working phone without his sd card. Placing there contacts is quite weired :|. Wonder that would be unpractical if you using 2 sd cards
okay, here's a tip how i reorganize my contacts so i dont have duplicates and also clean contacts database..
at first we need to use gmail and it would be easier to open it from pc..
step 1 : sync your phone contacts with google
step 2 : open gmail, login and go to contacts (click on the text gmail, you'll see 3 menus: gmail, contacts and tasks.. choose contacts)
step 3 : export your contacts to sdcard, and import them to gmail.
step 4 : on the left, choose "My Contacts"
step 5 : select all contacts, and on the "More" drop down menu, select "Find & merge duplicates..."
step 6 : recheck your contacts manually for empty names or numbers/emails without names (in my case, there are some emails with no name, so i just delete the not important ones, and merged the ones i recognise with the correct contacts)
now, if you think you've sorted all of the contacts then you could MERGE/DIVIDE the contacts into groups..
you could do that by ticking all the contacts and click the "Groups" drop down menu, and uncheck everything except "My Contacts" group.. this step is to remove "imported" groups from android..
if you need to divide contacts into groups then you can select the contacts and create a new group from the "Groups" drop down menu..
Now, if you think your contacts are perfect, this is the last step.
EXPORT YOUR GMAIL CONTACTS to pc for safety reason.. then
DELETE ALL YOUR CONTACTS FROM THE PHONE (you could install "go contacts" or similar app to easily bulk remove them.)
SYNC your contacts from your phone
and you are done.. after all contacts are correctly synched to your phone, you could export them again to SDcard for later use..
sorry if the steps are messy and maybe a little unclear, if there's any questions just let me know
