(after a link back to this post)
I use debian not ubuntu but the idea is install the java5 package from the older version (keeping your java6 package) then use the alternatives command to switch between them.
If you primarily use java6 and don't want to be constantly switching the alternatives you can always in part of your build setup (just before running '. build/envsetup' add the java6 bin directory to the beginning of your path. (That or take a moment to allow java6 to work with froyo.. I'm not sure exactly what needs to happen but it ought not be that bad [edit: seems the same person has some instructions for java6: http://tech.ruimaninfo.com/?p=49 ])
i posted the steps to install it for ubuntu 11.04 @ grp already if u havent seen it

ok i installed debian for the android and using this site http://www.androidfanatic.com/cms/community-forums.html?func=view&catid=9&id=1620#1620 and whenever i type in bootdeb on terminal emulator it says its caught in a loop or something and i rlly need help because i hav been tryin for a month on getting lxde desktop on g1 and hopefully that time didnt go to waste cause i finally got it working but then i cant boot in to debain please
It's really not worth the effort... debian on the g1 is just for geek thrills, its speed and functionality is limited to say the least.
You should probably just get help on the site that you originally got the instructions from. The whole "run Debian on the G1" craze died off back in the December/January range. You'll probably get little help, especially with your thread title "help please fast seriously".

Ok guys heres a big one for ya lol...
I have a laptop i've been using for about 2 years now with ALL my android stuff on it.. I had adb set up correctly and sdk was running correctly everything was good i had no problems... ok so i still have all the files that I used to install everything and all my other files i have for my android device are saved on an external hard drive nice and safe lol.
So my issue is.. I recently upgraded to windows 7 ultimate (64 bit)!! completely brand new fresh boot up with nothing on it... and im having trouble on how exactly to get adb working and im also having trouble trying to set up the sdk manager thing... so if anyone has the time i was hoping you could kinda help me install these things properly on my 64-bit system? I have a Gtalk account or you can just pm me or leave a comment here if you think you can help...
Thank You!!

ok now for my question i have a samsung captivate with froyo 2.2 uckb2 and i want to get root access on my phone the only computer i have access to has linux mint which is the main problem if i had windows i would have already oneclicked this and been done with it but my main question is i have seen heimdall and im still really confused if thats what i need or not second do i need the drivers if i have linux i remember somewhere saying i didnt need the drivers if im on linux (might have misread)
feel free to post links im not afraid to read up on something but i have been looking for a while and cant get a clear cut answer and thus i posted another thread feel free to delte this but at least let me get an answer first plz
Simple search on Google.
Rooting Captivate on linux
No clue if that will work on mind, but still.
yea thats def the first thing i did but all of the ones that come up just leave me even more confused than i already am like what is abd and everything else like i said i have already looked around and im just confused as to what i need
also tried the link there but that gives me a head ache even trying to think about that i mean if someone could break down some of the terms he uses there i would gladly stop dirtying up the thread with my nooby questions
Basically you are going to do everything the 1 click does in the terminal. Just follow the steps its literraly broken in to simple command steps.
And learn how to use a period. Holy run on sentence batman. You're entire first post is one rambling, jumbled, **** storm of a sentence. If you want help you at least need to type in a way that people can understand it.
this root/rom thing. .
for some reason my note wont give me the latest update. .so its still on the 2.6.3 n7000XXKK5 version .. its laggy, the wifi is weak etc. . i really wanted to keep my phone stock but now im forced to do something because my version of the phone doesnt get the update. .
i have a mac computer. . most tutorials are all for windows. .
i went to dr. ketens thread and i downloaded both items and they wont open on my phone. . i tried downloading the rom directly from my phone but since the wifi suxks it never finshes. .
not sure what to do here. .i know for long time android users it seems simple but im just not following .. anyone tips or tricks to get me going ..
i cant even open this odin file. .
i downloaded androidzip pro
DrKetan's thread has detailed instructions on how the rooting is done, but you already know that.
Find a friend with a windows PC, and get it done over there. How hard can it be, it takes about 5 minutes?
Or do it from a virtual machine with windows eg parallel.

Had the same problem with iPhone - sn0wbreeze and Jailbreaking, i could never make a custom firmware with preserved baseband as i dont own a mac. Anyhow someone or the other would load the custom firmware online!!
Welcome to the Android Ecosystem, Its slightly difficult at first but if you liked jailbreaking and cydia tweaks you would love it here.
Untill then check out this app Heimdall
I have a Windows 8.1 laptop and can no longer connect my HTC One so I've decided to use Linux to use ADB to change the shell so I could run a RUU on Windows to get my phone on a stock rom... That is my level of understanding of what I want to do, but I cannot find the "code" to use in Terminal to get ADB to work... I have booted Ubunto Desktop to my usb but I havn't installed the OS, just "try"ed it... I don't know if that is an issue or not. Here are the links I have tried to use to get this to work... Which should I be following, or even better, does anybody have a step by step guide of how to get adb to work so i can finally fix this phone...

Honestly the best thing to use is a Windows 7 PC.. Anyways, what's wrong with your phone? Does it reboot every 30 seconds?
Also, there are ways to get adb working on windows 8.1, if you're like me and don't have a windows 7 computer at home all the time
Finally, you stated that it won't connect to your 8.1 PC. Do you get any error at that time? Do you have the latest HTC drivers installed? Is your cable good?
Sorry if I wrote a lot, just trying to get you up and running.
EDIT: I GOT THE PC TO SEE MY HTC ONE!!!!!!
sry for the caps, but I soft bricked my phone back in April... ( i took a lil break from fixing it... just like 2 months lol) but I just followed this link here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559200 and apparently I have to disable driver sigs every time i start up? Idk cause I've dont that before but whatever, did it again, and used the adb drivers from the link and now Im connected... Decided to go balls to the wall and skip the stock rom, and straight to Viper 6.2... so after I finish the download I"ll let you know what happened...

Umm, I think that link somehow got me this youtube vid, which had the link for the adb drivers... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUjQnwULGzs
But that's the drivers I used to get my phone working on Windows 8.1...
Edit 2: Well i was able to sideload ViperOne to my phone and... it continues to reset itself... So a similar problem but now at least the phone is seen as One now, not some random usb device... and even the Internal Storage pops up when plugged in.... So now i'll prob go ahead and run the stock RUU... see if that helps any
