Nandroid back-ups - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

One more ? Every time I try to do a nandroid backup through recovery it will start doing it just fine but then it will get to a part and says skipping external storage then it will go no further period and the only way I can reboot it is to do a battery pull and I have tried this numerous timew Does anyone know what's up with that?
sent from my rooted milestone A854

This has happened to me some times. I've read in some place that it's a common error if you have more than 3 or 4 bakcups on the nandroid folder (it doesn't matter how much free space you have).
Since I keep 2 or 3 nandroid backups on SD, I haven't any problem with this.
I hope this work for you.

Two things usually cause this, either the folder is renamed and has a space in the name, or you are low on battery and need to charge your phone (greater than 50% is best)
Also have a close to full SDCard will cause it.
damn forgot that one. lol Don't think about it, never an issue for me

well it restored this time but after 3 hours on the htc screen i pulled the battery
I have this same issue.
I just created a new backup (97% battery, over 1/2 of SD card mem free). Here's a list of the files that it created:
boot.img
misc.img
recovery.img
system.img
When I look at one of the 2 backups that will actually restore, it shows these files:
boot.img
cache.img
data.img
misc.img
nandroid.md5
recovery.img
system.img
Any idea why this is happening?
No one has any thoughts on this?
What recovery are you running?
I'm running 1.5.2
You might want to try and use a newer version of recovery. There is 1.6.2 and also darch has one that he OC'd.
I had this problem before when I copied my sdcard to my computer and reformatted my card to fat32 only. When I tried to restore a backup it was trying to write files to the sdcard but there was not an ext file system on it so it would abandon the process.

did you repartition your sd and it worked?
I flashed 1.6.2, and I still can't get a good backup.
The upside is I still have one that works, the downside is that it's from 6/1.
I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on other things to try.

Nandroid backup stuck at "Dumping.." system or data till the battery's empty, and there no data backed up, so I have to use Titanium Backup for backing up data
Sometimes it works if you format your card and download a fresh copy of AOR. Make sure you backup your sdcard before formatting it.

Here's what I do.
First, download mini partition tool for formatting the SD card (http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html), don't forget back up the sdcard before doing format.
after formatting complete, copy your back up to your sdcard, and then copy the fresh OR (I'm using the androidiani OR 3.3 (http://code.google.com/p/androidiani-openrecovery/download/list) to your sdcard.
Go to openrecovery and do the nandroid.
On my case the nandroid backup is success.
Hope it works on you too.
Hey could you check if the Nandroid backup is created? in my case, the process stopped at the System Backup. But when I did a battery pull and booted to recovery, I found that the Nandroid was indeed created...
Ye it did make a back up after a pull but the only thing that was missing was the system file

I had this problem last week. The nandroid would fail when it hit my Ext2 partition, and I'd have to do a battery pull.
I put the card in my laptop using an SD adapter and ran a chkdisk on it in windows 7. Sure enough there were errors on the card that needed repairing. After that, nandroid worked perfectly.
I've had the error as well once before, and that required a bit more work. My milestone came with a 16gb card, but I upgraded to a 32gb card...still have the 16gb in reserve 'just in case'. And it's a lucky thing I do. I deleted my music off the 32gb card to make room, and then used the previously mentioned minitool partition wizard to clone my 32gb card to the 16gb card.
nandroid worked on the 16gb card without any problems.
So i wiped the 32gb card (deleted all partitions from it) and then cloned the 16gb card back to the 32gb card...
nandroid started working again.
Since most people probably don't have spare cards like that lying around, you SHOULD be able to replicate what I did by using a regular SD card or even a USB stick.
Hope any of that helps.
Nandroid never works for me also....

Storage & App2SD issues..

Note: This is a long one, theres a tl;dr at the bottom of the page.
So, yesterday I bought the XDA Premium app from the market. I installed it, used it for a few hours, rebooted my phone, tried to open it back up, "Failed to load activity" error or something along those lines.
So then I looked it up on the market, it wasn't recognizing that it was installed, so I reinstalled it again. Used for a few hours. Rebooted my phone, same issue. This has happened a few times.
So I figured maybe some data was corrupt. So I installed it from the market, uninstalled it, tried to reinstall it again and it said not enough storage space on my phone. I looked and I have 2.77GB free space on internal storage.
So I figured I'd move some apps to the SD card anyways. Started moving all apps from my phone to SD using the App2SD app (Which I think just redirects to the application's page in settings). Everything seemed to work fine.
Rebooted my phone, and some icons on my screens in LauncherPro didn't load. Tried opening several of them.. all of them "failed to load activity". I'm talking about at least a dozen different programs here that had somehow gotten corrupted? Rebooted again, they didn't come back. Reinstalled a few of them and rebooted and one still wouldn't open.
So I'm restoring from a CWM backup I did just before I went to bed last night. Any opinions on what might have gone wrong or what I could do differently? Is 2.77gb reserved space for texts/cache/etc or was the "not enough storage" error incorrect?
tl;dr: xda premium was corrupting/wouldn't install because I *only* had 2.77gb free internal storage? Tried moving things with app2sd and many, but not all, corrupted after a reboot. Rebooted a second time, didn't solve any issues.
Don't use apps2sd with this phone. Go to settings, applications, media area, click on everything with a check mark, move to phone. This will solve your problem.

So, as I mentioned above, I performed a recovery using an image I had created in CWM late last night.
Just for kicks I tried moving a single app to SD to see what happens.. Google+ went from 28mb on internal memory, to 8mb on SD. Restarted, it was corrupted and not even showing up in application list.
So whats the deal with our phones? They can't move anything to SD card without corrupting? Hopefully this is patched as I appear to be hitting the artificial 2.77gb cap on apps?
So.. my experiment with JUST moving Google+ to SD failed more miserably than I originally thought. Not only did G+ corrupt as I mentioned above, but my phone also started freezing again and VNC Viewer also corrupted itself.
So I had to perform a second recovery on my phone this morning. Ugh. Having way too many issues with this phone considering I only bought it maybe 2 weeks ago.
One more update.. hope someone can help me with this.
So I performed a recovery with CWM. Since then I have not done ANY App2SD attempts or anything. This is a recovery from before I ever did any of that.
Now, whenever I uninstall any app, when I reboot my phone several apps will corrupt. These are apps that I had used App2SD on before I had done the recovery. Its like, when I uninstall an app it finds some data from prior to the recovery and that corrupts the app...
Any way to fix this? I looked at my SD card and the only data on there is Titanium Backup data, CWM backup data, and a few zip files that I had put on there. I told ES File Manager to show hidden files and there is nothing on my SD that I see that could be making Android corrupt these files...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.. I'm starting to thing I'm going to have to do a fastboot recovery to completely stock and start over again..
If you restored a recovery, wasn't that recovery with apps2sd as well? Does that make sense?

Here, I'll lay it out a bit more clearly:
1) Midnight last night I performed a backup with CWM. Everything was working fine, I hadn't done any changes or App2SD things yet.
2) Woke up at 10AM today and this was when all of the issues covered in this thread started. After 10AM today was when I first attempted to use App2SD Pro to move apps around.
3) I recovered using the recovery from part 1 of this message
4) I'm still having issues with programs corrupting even though I'm using an image from Midnight yesterday.
How can I completely wipe my phone then restore with Fastboot? Wipe SD, internal, everything.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
So it appears I fixed my problem.. even though I have run two complete restores using a backup from prior to my issues, some apps were still set to go on my SD card. So I guess a CWM backup doesn't store all file system data.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
Also some apps try to load on SD card watch out amazon apps. I've put 300plus sized various apps on my phone and didn't crack 2gb. And really 200apps or more your not going to have time for them.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
Yea, the XDA Developers app tries to load on the SD card by default. That was the entire root problem that caused all the above posts...
Hopefully Motorola fixes this SD card issue in the next patch.

[Q][Solved] swapping two galaxy note

hi there, got two galaxy notes at home, one is mine one is my GF's
hers got a scratch and she's very sad about it. since i don't mind that much i am willing to swap our devices.
what's the best way of doing it now?
i'm sporting a rooted and paranoided rom, she's on stock.
just rooted her's with philz latest kernel, i'm currently backing her phone up
will it work if i just swap the sdcards and perform a restore on both phones?
i'll just have then to swap internal sd cards using a pc isn't it?
thanks guys.

I think there'll be data corruption as it's between stock and cm based as they're different frameworks, most things should be ok, but I think some apps will not restore ok. It might be easier to do a titanium backup of data and just restore that rather than setting etc.
Much the same with sd card as the mount points are different.

well, i tried to backup on an external SD her phone but it was too small for the task so i just made the backup on the internal memory of the phone.
now i saved all the content of her internal memory on my pc and am about to do the same with my own.
i will try to copy then my own note's data on her note and vice versa then restore the backups.
would that not overwrite any framework?

The framework is built in to the rom, so not over writable. To do a safe transfer make your new phone cm based then you can safely transfer. If your gonna leave it as tw, then it won't work.

So long as you have safe kernel in the one you're restoring to it should be fine. That being said, it's likely you'll have to perform full wipes to have secure boot up between cm based and Touchwizz.

Enormous NAND backup sizes

So since sdcard is now part of /data, when I make a NAND backup the size is almost 4GB, since I have a bunch of music stored locally from Google Music. Is there anyway to get TWRP to ignore the sdcard directory when backing up (since it doesn't get wiped anyway) so that each backup I make isn't ginormous? I'm already down to only 15GB left on this phone. I know I could have it just not backup the data partition, but then restoring from a backup would only restore the OS and not the apps and configuration I previously had (which is kinda the whole point of a backup, since otherwise I could just fresh install a new ROM).
cant you just copy them over to your computer? and keep one on the phone for safety?
Just created a nandroid backup with CWM touch, mine came out as 2.1GB, not sure why your backup is so large
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Mine are usually around 1.5GB. But I don't keep music and videos on mine.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Since the /sdcard data is sharing with the same partition as the /data doing a nandroid backup would depend on how much space is consumed by your sdcard.
So I guess nothing I can do, then? Thanks anyway.
Does this mean a Nandroid backup of the One would backup photos and media too?

Yes!
Problem is that Google Music cache is in /data/data folder, so Twrp backs it up. Solution is to create a folder on /sdcard and symlink the Google Music cache folder to it. Twrp won't back it up because it doesn't follow symlinks nor does it backup /sdcard. There are several posts on the subject, just search.

I don't believe it does, I don't think Nandroid would perform backup functions differently on different devices but coming from the SGN I - I can tell you that all Nandroid backups are basically settings and OS files as well as Apps / App Data. For the most part, when you do a Wipe / Format on your phone, it is only removing the OS files and installed Apps. It does not backup your photos / videos as it never really removes that data to begin with and so you should see your stuff there even after installing a fresh copy of the ROM. If you go into advanced functions in CWM and format your card, then you will wipe the entire device off.
IIRC CWM started taking nandroid backups very differently from a few versions ago, there's now a "blobs" folder in the backup folder and that is the one that grows exponentially in size. I believe that was done to only make incremental backups easy but the downsize is grows massive.
I cannot give you a guaranteed answer if deleting the blobs folder is safe or not but I have deleted it in the past and eventually resorted to just keeping the most recent backup by deleting all backups / blobs and then doing a fresh backup.
click compression and mines 1 gig
A nandroid backup also backs up the data directories and your downloaded Goggle Music songs are in that data directory. Therefore whenever your do a nandroid backup, the songs will be backed up as well, increasing your final size...

Ok just to answer my own question.
I just took a nandroid backup of One of my phones and restored it to my other one.
Music and Gallary did not come across.
If anyone else wants me to verify anything I'm more than happy to as I have both phones in front of me and all my settings and profiles are there, just no media.
