I just grabbed the wireless tether app for root users via the market store and I love it.
My new netbook is too far away from my router on the other end of my place and so I just decided to try out an app for wireless tethering and voila.
Anyway, so I was wondering if Cricket will charge me extra for the bandwidth that I use to tether? I'm on the unlimited plan. Is there a cap that I need to watch out for?
The app displays the amount of data in kb and mb that is downloaded when browsing. Thanks!
They won't charge you for using more than 1GB/month, but they WILL cut your speed down to 7.5KBPS after you reach that 'limit'. Go to www.mycricket.com and look into their Fair Use Policy. It explains everything.

I thought it was 5Gb a month

It's 1gb. They allow 5gb with their mobile broadband plan before they throttle you back.

I found this neat piece of info in regard to the average bandwidth usage for daily tasks,
Approximate Data Usage Examples
Basic information and examples showing the approximate data usage for several common Internet activities appear below.
Application Approximate Size
E-mail (1 text page without attachments).....................................................................................................3 KB
Based on this assumption, you would need to send and/or receive approximately 1,747,627 e-mails in a month to reach 5 GB
Word Document (5 text pages)..................................................................................................................70 KB
Based on this assumption, you would need to download approximately 74,897 Word Documents in a month to reach 5 GB
Web Page..............................................................................................................................................150 KB
Based on this assumption, you would need to look up approximately 34,952 web pages in a month (or over 1,000/day) to reach 5 GB
Digital Photo..........................................................................................................................................500 KB
Based on this assumption, you would need to download approximately 10,485 low resolution digital photos in a month to reach 5 GB
PowerPoint Presentation (20 pages text & light graphics)...............................................................................3 MB
Based on this assumption, you would need to download approximately 1,707 PowerPoint presentations in a month to reach 5 GB
Note: The above examples are just estimates, based on approximate size assumptions. Actual file sizes and user experiences will vary.
Cricket Fair Use Policy
Cricket sets usage levels on the amount of data a customer can upload and download within stated periods of time.
If you exceed your rate plan usage levels, Cricket will temporarily reduce the speed at which you can send and receive data over the Cricket network.
You will still be able to use the service but your speed will be slower.
Cricket may use other traffic management and prioritization tools to help ensure equitable access to the Cricket network for all customers.

Hi all,
Whenever downloading ROMs and apps from xda, I always see rapidshare links. Is there a way we can rather switch to something like mediafire instead with multiple downloads, no waiting and high speed?
Saves time and is for sure - better.
Just a thought. Any comments?
I hate RS cause I have to wait and sometimes I get the "Servers are Full" message which is annoying. MF and 4Shared are better instead.
Many folks use RS (and Hotfile) as their file hosting service as these services have been around for quite some time. Additionally, some services allow members to accumulate points which can be redeemed as currency or used for enhancing membership features.
In the case of chefs, I suppose it's an indirect way of obtaining some compensation for the hard work they put in.
Cheers,

Thanks for clarification, I didn't know about the whole point system from RS & Hotfile.
Hotfile for me!

MediaFire
Rapidshare has been really bad lately. Getting constant errors of no available free slots. That's horrrible. Mediafire is so much better. It's always been better. Just noticing it a lot more cause RS is going down hill.
But it really doesn't matter what file sharing site is being used if you have JDownload. It takes the hastle out of all of them.
mediafire of course,
if there's one direct download, why must waiting
Think also location comes into where to host as MediaFire is blocked in China and so was 4shared for along time "can be tweaked now via little url change"
So if you used Rapidshare you cut down on the amount of users not being able to download, also don't get the i can't download posts
Remembering allot of chefs have used Rapidshare for many years.
I use MediaFire & 4shared.
anything is better than rapidshare

Just pay for it man. It is only 50 euro for 1 year !
yes anything other rs
senspace n mf ok
My vote goes to mediafire the best, provides parrallel downloads (resume support), speed download, and no wait time. And the best part is completely free
Rapid is the best paid option. 4shared.com is great for webmasters who are looking for free hosting, they never delete files. Mediafire is so so
is there a way to display the download and upload bitrate of my phone? there are arrows next to the network type symbol to indicate if the data connection is uploading or downloading but I'm looking for a way to give any indication about the speed. anyone knows anything?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
If you want to bench your Nexus One, you can install the speedtest.net app into your phone (available on the market). This will surely gives you a good indication of your current location data speed.
But having the speed constantly updated/refreshed in the notification area... Would it be useful? SmartPhone trafic is bursty: a couple of Kb in/out at a time. Sometime bigger "short" D/L of apps and/or images... Unless you do long transfer, most of your readings would not give you the real picture of your data rate.
Also, 2G/3G data rates are "fixed". You can compare it to "old phone modems" there were specific rates: 14.4K, 28.8K, 33.6K. So, you can never end up with a 29.3K speed.
You have to refer to the HSDPA/HSUPA rate tables.
Network Speed is what you need. Shows current up/down speed in notification pane + shortish term historic graph on click. http://www.appbrain.com/app/network-speed/netspeed.pt I had uninstalled it because there was no way to exit (it slows the system down a bit) but I see that's been solved now.
awesome about what I was looking for. thx

Not sure if I should post this in the App forum or the Q&A forum...anyway...
I am looking for an app that shows data sent and received in the task bar but with numbers associated with it. I had found an app earlier which put data activity in the task bar but it was still in bar form with no numbers associated with it.
Thanks.
there's an app that "does" what you want, plus more, its called zdbox or something. I can't remember. It is a very useful app though.
I've been using 3G Watchdog for a few weeks and it seems to be doing a good job. It only measures Data up/down, not wifi though, and it gives detailed amounts and can even be programmed with your monthly quota and will notify you if you are getting close to your data limit.
I suggest you try Droidstats.
Been using it for about a month now and it's working very well (especially for a free app).
Also very customizable, you can put your top5/top10, add the night/weekend free call time, set the amount of data (+ when to tell you only have a certain % left) and some more.
Try it, you won't be disapointed
i just upgraded my box app and got a free upgrade to 50 gbs! Now through March 23, it looks like, update or install and get 50 gbs.
I can finally uninstall that worthless OpenDrive app. There are so many cloud storage apps out there, but most of the apps are among the worst the market has to offer.
Hey,
I had 50gb since the LG promotion. The only downside is that the box does not have a desktop component for free. But box is great for me cause I do alot of sideloading and I can do it on my phone and on my nook. I get a prompt on my phone asking me if I want to install an app or upload it to box. I install on my phone first then upload to box and then install on my nook.
Another great cloud service is dropbox.
Eh I already have 100 free GB unused from their iOS promotion. The limit on the file size makes it useless for using for anything useful.
Sent from my Blackberry Playbook
Yeah, the size limit can be a bummer, but my reading material needed a permanent home instead of loose sdcards.
I have put all my books and funny books (which can be up to 20+ mbs an issue, which adds up quick for files you can read in ten minutes) up onto Box with Foldersync. I then use File Expert, which has a file explorer for cloud storage that is easy to use and woks just like any other external storage explorer.
From within File Expert I just periodically import any number of things i think I may be interested in reading that week or so and import them into Aldiko. Rinse and repeat, with my 20 gbs of media now taking up half a gig at worst and available permanently.
I had to periodically cycle through my box account and clean and restock it. With could storage becoming less and less expensive as it becomes more and more valuable, I couldn't make myself pay actual money to commit to one service when there are so many offering free 5 gig chunks. But it was hassle and insufficient, so this was great news for me.
How does this work?please explain. Thanks

hi this is my first post.
just bought a used 8.9 att tab. right now i'm using wifi, but planning to get att sim prepaid data plan for domestic and my international trip. i know there are alot of apps running in the background like the accu weather apps. those constantly pull data, correct? my question is how do i stop them from pulling data? i just want to used my tablet and save as much as data as possible and i only want to use it when i need it like surfing the web, checking weather when i need it. do i kill those apps running in the background and how do i kill it? what other apps are pulling in data beside the accu weather map, the standard apps that came on my 8.9 honeycomb os.
or should i just disconnect my 3g connection when i'm not in used and just turn on wifi instead? and then turn on my 3g when need it? i'm planning to get the cheapest plan which is 250 MB for $15/month prepaid.
You will probably have to check settings of each and every app you have, to reduce the frequency of background updates, and perhaps to set them up to only download on WiFi connection. Not all apps provide such flexibility. I know I removed a few apps (from my phone) because they didn't allow to save data traffic.
I recommend you install an app that tracks and reports your mobile data PER APPLICATION.
I use RadioOpt Traffic Monitor for that, on my phone.

installed this apps today and ran the apps with my wifi. holy crap. just today briefing turning on my 8.9 for about 4 hours and light surfing on my dolphin browser, it has 189 MB!
here are some of the breakdowns:
total traffic: 189 MB
system traffic: 147 MB
dolphin browser: 20 MB
and other misc. running apps in that didn't took much data.
my question is majority of it is from system traffic. what is system traffic? how do i stop it running? if i plan to get the cheapest att data plan for my 8.9 which is 250 MB, it wouldn't even last a day!
any1 here subscribe to att with their tab and how do you cut on the data you use on your tab with your att data plan? thx in advance.
