Photo Uploads Don't Work - Motorola Droid 3

Photo Uploads Don't WorkWhenever I try to upload photos through the built in photo uploading app (it doesn't matter what service I try to upload to) the photo fails to upload, giving an "Upload error" notification. When the notification is clicked I get the following error: "Can't send response now. Data services are unavailable."
I've seen some people mention doing a full factory reset (on other Motorola DROID phones) and this possibly fixing the issue, but I would definitely like to avoid this at all costs.
Additionally, and this may or may not be related, my phone has trouble syncing with verious social networks at various times.
Stuff I've Tried Already
I have tried on both WiFi and 3g (both connections work fine for everything else)
I have updated my roaming with *228
I have tried a factory reset
Data Manager is not set to Wait for WiFi to upload
I have tried removing and re-adding the accounts

Nevermind. Removed all that stuff anyway.

OMg i hated that!!! mine does that from time to time!

I have noticed that happening from time to time with dropbox, and also a problem where it uploads t the main dropbox directory rather than my selected directory. I noticed that it appears to happen when the phone is running low on RAM.
Based on the behavior of the gallery app and dropbox app, I believe what is happening lies in how Android manages memory. There is a good article about this over at Android Central but essentially Android allows for different classifications of apps. As Android system runs out of RAM, it will start shutting down apps and running processes based on this priority system.
So, what I believe happens is that when you select a picture in the Gallery app, then switch over to your uploaded (or vice versa), the phone runs out of RAM and closes the original app. Once you select the upload location (or the desired pic in the vice versa scenario), that app will look for a handoff from the first app, however that first app was closed by the system due to low memory. I am basing this on conjecture, but I have observed dropbox or the gallery app appear to "reload" after I switch between the two.
The low RAM is my major gripe about the Droid 3. Moto's custom skin, along with all the VZ bloat, appears to somehow eat up a ton of RAM (perhaps there is bloatware that runs in the background" which would be OK if the Droid came with 768mb or 1gb of ram. I wish there was a way to add ram after the fact.

I've never experienced this but I never use the native uploading app in Motorla gallery either. I tend to steer clear of the account setup in android and download apps from the market instead so i can control the data transfer and how all my interactions with my albums go a little more specifically. All that to say i use photobucket and have never had this error using the photobucket app on the market.

This problem was not a memory management problem, and had something to do with motorolas servers. It seemed to be fixed last time I checked

Nexus One uses too much data

Sorry if this has already been asked, I already searched in Google and in the Forums.
In Portugal we don't have unlimited data plans, actually they are really limited (mine allows only 150MB). Today I've used only the data connection for less then 2h and it used 4MB of data (430KB received and 3.5MB transmitted) and all this time the phone never left my pocket. With the G1 on a average day it used only 2MB.
Does anyone have a similar problem?
How can I track which app is using all this data?
I'm using CyanogenMod, but I have the same problem with the default firmware.
yes i have noticed this too. but here in USA we have unlimited data. the only suggestion i say is to turn of the data connection completely. that's the only solution that i know. it seems like android 2.1 OS is constantly sending data packets, even if you dont have any apps doing anything in the background.
Sorry to hear about the small data plan options, that just stinks
That sucks! Android without data connection looses the whole point, I'll check if there's any other bigger data plan that I can afford...
Still, if anyone knows a solution, please tell me.
Look through all the default programs to check for any syncing options.
News and weather defaults to pull stories every 12 hours I believe. If you don' use that, turn it all off(especially the news).
Check your E-mail frequencies as well if you added any pop/imap addresses. The defaults are 15 minute intervals.
Those are the two major things that pull data off throug default settings.
I already tried to disable "Background data" on preferences and it didn't solve the problem, so it's not gmail, calendar or any other gapp. I'll try to disable the weather (though, since most of the data was transmitted, not received, that shouldn't be the problem)
Haven't enable Latituded in Maps have you? That sends out a **** load.
I have latitude enabled, but I has it enabled in G1 too. I'll try to disable it anyway.
Most googles apps are push so they won't have large usage. When I said email I meant the email application.
No, I didn't use the email app, I've put my POP accounts on Gmail
After killing (almost) all apps using Astro it stopped using the data connection madly. Next I'll reboot and kill the apps one by one until it stops again, if I find anything useful I'll post it here.
System panel will tell you what you network usage is as well.
As far as I know...Maps and rest of Gapps are the cause for this "problem".
I´m not worried about using too much data, as my plan runs unlimited...but about my privacy!
Google is a MONSTER we are feeding each second...the most androiders...the most bigger the "Bicho" will be
Anyway, I just turn sync and any form of geolocation OFF and things get measured...
Netdroid from the market willl help you control your data connection.
I noticed that the "battery use" thing displays the data used by each app, but it only displays the most battery consuming apps. Would this be a way to go?
It's probably an app running wild, but it can be a bit hard to find out which. I installed the chess.com app once and without _ever_ starting it I found out it had used 40MB up/down in a rather small timeframe. Immediate uninstall for programs that waste my bandwith (have a 1GB plan, so not that big of a deal, but still).
That's what I thing, but how do I find out which app it is?
Need someone to confirm this but…
If you do the *#*#4636#*#* “trick” (type this into the phone pad). Then go to Battery History, then change the top drop down box to Network Usage, this appears to list all the apps using the network and how much they are doing so. If you click on an app it shows you how much data it has sent and received.
Is this useful for the OPs question? I’m suspicious because it is under “Battery History”, but it does appear to show which applications are using the most data…?
Yes, that's exactly the point of the Service Menu (it's no trick).
On Cyanogen the option is showing in Spare Parts.
I think your **** is porn-addict and browse youporn since we have flash on your phone when it's in your pocket

Why does media scanning take so long on our phones?

Or is it just my phone?
I originally thought it was just an Android thing; A minor inconvenience that I could get used too. After helping my brother flash his Droid X and seeing how fast it completes it's scan I have to ask, what makes our phones slower?
the problem is with the file system that samsung used for our phones, you need to install a kernel where it converts it from the rfs system they used to an optimized ext 4, most of the roms come with this feature or you could just use supercrucio's kernel (Voodoo) which works best for me

I should have mentioned that I almost always run a lagfix.
Maybe the Droid X is just that much faster with reads, and the Captivate isn't slow.
If you have root, you can d/l rescan media root and control all that nonsense.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Media scan is still horrid even under custom ROMs.
Admittedly I thought it was due to the large amount of data on the slow external SDCard I have (16gig).
I want to find something where I can just disable it and run it manually whenever I want it to update.
Found an app called Rescan Media and tried it for giggles.
"Disabled" using the application - and I have to say my phone rebooted seemingly much faster - Widgets loaded and ready to use faster then I've ever had to wait before.
The media scanner will still load on boot - but doesn't re-scan your entire cards during the bootup process. And if you hit the app it will cause the Media scanner to read your cards which doesn't take very long at all since your phone is already up and booted.
Have to use it for awhile and see if it screws anything up - but I think this app is a keeper!

See the post above yours. I tried that solution a couple weeks ago and didn't really like it, but others seemed to. (edit: just saw your previous post)
It probably wouldn't be such a nuisance if it wasn't the first freaking thing it did after reboot. Media scanning should run after other startup items... like obtaining signal, loading widgets, launcher, etc.
Or even better, have it run only when you launch the music player or gallery. I'm not sure why we would need it any other time. Or even betterest, let us set up specific folders for media so we don't need the scanner at all.
Yup I agree - Samsung strikes again at being lazy just doing a blind scan at boot up.
Since all the processes are trying to startup at the same time of the scan - it's causing the perceived lag as they are both fighting each other (for lack of a better term) for resources and I/O and takes forever for them to figure it out.
It would be nice if a Dev could create a 3rd party app that takes control of the Media Scanner - then gives us the options of only scanning certain folders and have it scheduled to run like you mentions - i.e. when <x> app loads, or after you unplug your USB, or just run it manually.
The app I posted isn't that elegant a solution but it does seem to work. My bootup time is cut in half (This is from Power Up to Usable UI Interface with Widgets loaded.).
Just nice to have considering I STILL (i.e. will never) haven't gone to AT&T to exchange my phone due to the shutdown issues I've been having. At least it's not the up to 3 minutes!! I used to have to wait for me to be able to use the phone again.
LOL.. but coming from an Apple iPhone 3G I was used to it.
it truthfully is slow... i have a sd card for more memory so it takes about twice as long than the normal.. im running darky port 8.0 with voodoo but dont see a difference..
Put a file in your folders named ".nomedia" (without quotes) that contain things like rom zips, backups, etc and media scanner will stop spending time sifting through them searching for music and photos
edit....this will also eliminate unwanted images from showing up in the gallery if you have icons or png's that you use for other purposes

[Q] What Bloatware have you frozen/uninstalled without incident?

On my LG Revolution My SystemPanel App shows about 350 MB memory and 12 GB on the SD card. It also cites System Storage 1 GB, Application Storage 1.5 GB and Cache 193 MB. The SuperBox app shows 1.5 GB "Phone" memory. With about 25 applications "active" and several widgets installed, I still have 134 MB memory left
So far I've found the battery life not great, definitely have to charge during the day with 4lte and wifi on.
Noticed a bunch of the bloatware widgets took up memory even when I deleted them from the homescreen. Used TitaniumBackup to Freeze
Apps I've frozen with no apparent problems (yet).

Ya, coming from the incredible, even stock I would have 100-150 mbs of ram, and rooted I'd have usually 180-210. This phone, having the same amount of ram as that, will be anywhere from 30-100 usually. That's some pretty bad bloat.
In 3g only network, the phone actually has a really good battery(compared to the incredible), I can go all day without root so far, the baddest part is the % i lose just sitting there without use and the screen off, it sucks.
And have you been able to assign Google where Bing had priority before? I have the bing search relatively good, just really laggy.
Thanks for this list! I had started to experiment but kept it on the safe side since we don't have a recovery yet.
I noticed that there is quite a bit more listed in Bloat Freezer over Titanium which was my first freeze app. I tried Bloat Freezer when I noticed that some things that were frozen were still showing running processes.
A couple of notes to add on to this -- I'm running Go Launcher and cannot use any of the LG specific widgets, Friends+, What's New, etc. but:
What's New is still running and has functionality beyond the What's New widget. I forget the details but I think on a missed call I got the What's New app to display missed call, sms and email count from the pull down alerts. It was late and I didn't think twice about it until the next day (which is what prompted me to find out what was still running in the background even though I'm using Go Launcher.
I'm not sure exactly which Verizon app is responsible, but i recently unfroze all Verizon specific apps while experimenting and I was prompted to try the new data usage widget from Verizon. When I originally froze all these apps, that widget had stopped working in stock home. So it is not dependent on your home/launcher, but it is dependent on one of the VZ apps.
I'm tempted to just go down your list and freeze everything all at once, but maybe I'll do it in small batches and report back any findings.
Again, thanks for the list!
Wow, that is a ton of frozen bloatpops... didn't think too much of it but that's more apps than i had on my Inc. total on CM.. lol.

I also just completely uninstalled bing search + bing voice.
I seem to be experiencing a couple issues:
1. Search button did not remap to Google Search... so it does nothing at all
2. Lockscreen music controller seems to control a separate instance of the notification area music controller

(bah!)
I've gone through most of these without a problem -- the last one is VZWSERVICE which is now repeatedly popping up:

I'm curious though what purpose do these serve:
SNS
VZW SMS Filter
VZWService
I have them frozen and already recieved an SMS, so no hindrance there. I recognize the SNS icon from when I first got the phone (one of the widgets I think). I can't see any effect of having them frozen other than the obvious of course.
Be careful with these, I used Bloat Freezer to freeze a small subset of the apps listed in this thread (and none others) and now don't have a home screen. I turn on the phone, slide to unlock, and then the screen is black (normal indicator icons at the top). Holding home gets me to a recent apps page with no recent apps. Nothing else does anything, I can't even turn off the phone without taking the battery out. Any ideas?
the ones i posted can be frozen with no incident.
of course i use a custom launcher (launcher pro) so i can't attest to the home screen working
however, after freezing some other apps listed in other posts my bluetooth wouldn't work...
I use Go Launcher and I was able to add a few to the lists above:
Tunewiki
Sync Service
Mobile IM
Messaging Widget
Messaging (I use GO SMS)
Does anyone know what the LG and Verizon hidden menus processes are?
System seems a lot faster now and has better battery as far as I can tell.
Only issue I can think of, is that When I have my BT earpiece on and connected, I can not seem to get music out of the 3.5mm jack and into the car's aux.
Anyone else have this problem? What is the solution?
What wifi tether is everyone using? My market won't update. So if anyone can post an apk that'd be great.
Also don't freeze autorun 1.0 i think it is. That is the connectivity option for our usb and hdmi slots. Without that it'll work but you can't change the options ever. So you'll be stuck with hdmi off or on and usb charge only cause i think it always starts as.
Little Buddy Sr.
OP:...just a thought, take it or leave it haha
It would be greatly appreciated if you could update the list every so often with new ones added throughout the thread. Then maybe this could become a sticky at some point.
Also:
Anyone else realize Latitude and Twitter for LG doesnt show up in Ti Backup yet is running every once in awhile.... or maybe it's just my phone?
Um I don't even remember twitter being on my phone, I use bloatfreezer and pretty much froze everything on the OP list. I don't think there is to much else that you want to freeze with out risking your phone

If you use the stock launcher and then freeze Home 2.2.2 then you will have no home screen.
I use Go launcher EX so I was able to freeze home with no problems.
Only thing I can think of is a factory reset. But I'm sure others have better ideas.
I don't think Twitter for LG (or anything for LG) is active without the LG Home active.
I left lg home active, twitter doesn't show up anywhere in bloatfreezer. I have nothing on my phone that even refers to twitter.
Yea i'm not really sure where it's at. I think it's a sub-app(?) of something like one of those facebook/twitter/etc feed widgets. But every so often it shows up in my "running" folder on Go Launcher EX, and I used to see it in my task killer when I had one but i've never seen it on a list anywhere else.
rogue bloat? a new age in ruining our phones haha
As major said, and from what i've seen he's right 99% of the time, I haven't seen it since I froze/.bak LG Home. I'll post a screen shot if I end up seeing it again though

we're pretty much able to do that....but the hesitation has been because we have not had a recovery system and it's risky to start deleting any files at all.
However....a recovery system has been through testing lately(yesterday/today) and was released. There's no saying it's perfect but I haven't heard of anyone having big issues. So if you are comfortable with the recovery system available, delete away.

Hopefully you have this fixed already if not:
not sure if this will work but...connect your phone as a USB and hope it connects as a Mass Storage. Go into data/app and delete the Titanium Backup .apk
No idea if this will work, but it's possible that with TiBackup gone it will unfreeze everything.

Multitasking & app lag/freezing...

Having a problem in which app or task reappears in the foreground after pressing the Home button. Also, if I tap the recent apps button, the list of apps appears and then just as quickly brings the most recent app into the foreground automatically again. It happens so quickly that the "x" for closing the apps in the list doesn't even have a chance to appear or let me swipe them away.
Something else that seems to happen along with this problem is that parts of any given app start freezing (i.e. unresponsive links, menu options, etc) while other parts of the app can be tapped/pressed. For example, if I'm in the android settings menu, I may not be able to select one option in a list but I can select the option right above it. This appears to be totally random. If I back out of that menu and/or clear the app from the app list, I can go back and select that same menu option just fine.
This seems to only have started after I added a second user on the phone. I guess it could be that the phone doesn't have enough memory to handle both users, but why would ANDROID then build that feature into it's phone OS?
Fixes I've tried so far (based on extensive research on forums and web search):
Restarting the phone - works temporarily but the issue(s) returns within minutes.
Clearing the phone's cache - no difference
Clearing app cache for each app - no difference
Uninstalling unneeded apps - no difference
Disabling bloatware - no difference
Clearing Google now and search - temporary fix, problem returned soon
Turning off Google now and search - temporary fix, problem returned soon
Factory reset, reinstalled from backup - temporary fix, problem eventually returned
Factory reset, setup both users from scratch - temporary fix, problem eventually returned.
I have a Moto X xt1097, Android 5.1 stock, non-rooted
Any help or responses appreciated!

Well, I considered that as PART of the issue, sure. But isn't Android 5.1 supposed to support multiple users? If so, what about having a second user is causing the issue?
More info. I set up the second user for my business, using a separate Gmail account; minimal apps under that user (mostly Google's business products). I kept getting the two accounts mixed up when both were logged in under the same user.

It does "support" it. But you must remember that everything is shared, memory, storage, processor, and network, so the phone is a limit. The better the phone, the better it works.
Even when you are not using the other account it is using all of those things in the background, it checks for emails, google play updates, and if you installed apps those apps run in the background even while you are on the other user.
It is an Android feature yes, but for example our phone only has 2GB of memory which most likely ran out from so much usage.
Personally I have 2 phones, one for business and my personal phone.
I don't know if this is true, but maybe android 6.0 would get better performance thanks to Doze. Maybe the other user account gets put into Doze mode to save resources. Just a thought, but I am only guessing.

OK, I was afraid of that. It makes sense though.
I also noticed that the problem only occurs in the second user profile but not my original user profile; I'm guessing that this is because the Android OS gives the original user priority access to resources at any given moment. Or maybe the first user profile is more resource intensive. Just a guess really.
Well, I don't have money for a second phone right now. I'll have to figure out another way to keep those accounts more easily separated.
Thank you again for your help AGISCI!
Rather than running two user accounts you can run 2 Google accounts as a single user. Hence, all your Google business apps work is saved under your business Gmail account. I've been using it this way for years with little effect on phone resources.

Thanks kboya. That's actually how I started out, but it started getting tricky keeping accounts straight (i.e. chrome would keep defaulting to my personal account instead of my business account when I was signing up for different services, etc.). So, I thought the 2nd user idea would solve it nicely; still would if I could get hardware to support it.
Fair play. IMO multiple users was meant for tablets (less sensor and signal stress) and those with kids who only run games. It'll do what you want, but only at a pinch, a 6P might manage it better.

On this device however Google Photos does not work.
It is stuck on "Getting your photos..." for days without getting any photos what so ever, and without getting my photos it can't start to backup my new photos.

I uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times but it does nothing. I also monitor transfer speeds and I can see that it isn't doing anything. My network is fast, around 300/50 speeds so this should be more than plenty to load some low res previews.
And best result I got was that it got about 10% of my pictures before just getting stuck again.
Without Google Photos the device for me is not usable.
I am using Photos since day one and it works well. Sounds like you may have to check all app permissions if they are set. Additionally finish the process of other Google apps like Store, services, mail etc as you might have missed some access allowance somewhere.
And it will not hurt to update the phone with Today's new version.

I have finished all other google services. I have given Photos all access and data access for wifi and mobile. Also if I would have missed something it wouldn't explain how I once got like 10% of my images, which I know after last reinstall don't get again.
Installed latest update. Checked all settings
I have no power savings on, unlimited data allowed. Wifi or Mobile makes no difference.
Unlimited Mobile data usage set for Photos. But it just doesn't do anything.
Due to some MFA applications I need daily I can't factory reset without it being a hassle for a lot of people without having another phone.
So what's another good small Android phone in 2021?
So After deleting my Whatsapp Images folder it started working. The odd thing here is that I don't even hav Folder backup enabled, for any folder none the less for the Whatsapp folder.
This is obviously a bug in Photos where it checks folders.
Not sure if this helps, but on my Pixel, the Photos doesn't always sync up new files that are externally loaded (not taken through the camera). However, if I open the Files app and browse to the folder, it gets refreshed. This might help someone as I spent quite some time trying to get the app to recognize the new files.
