I pay $65 a month. I've never been with cricket before (always sprint ). If I download apps & music a lot, will I be charged more ?
EDIT : Sorry about this post. I just read crickets data cap is 1 or 5GB per month. Which is it?

I guess for smart phones it's 1Gb then you are throttled down and if you have the mobile broadband card it's 5Gb.
You should be fine on the bandwidth unless you are tethering.

Okay, since it is a 1GB cap then tethering for online games isn't the best choice I'll just stick to mobile internet and read up on the source codes. TY for the answer.

LMAO! Yeah don't think about tethering to your 360 to play Black Ops.
One match game would skyrocket over the 1GB cap.

How'd you know I was going to use it for COD? Lol you were right though BC I was going to do it but nvm.

It was a good guess since lots of online gamers are into Black Ops.
anyway, I found a useful article that shows how to keep track of data in order to avoid extra fee charges or throttling.
http://thetechjournal.com/electroni...how-much-data-you-use-on-your-cellphone.xhtml
It would take 33mb of usage per day in a month to reach 990mb (before the 1GB cap).

Games don't use that much data since they are just sending text back and forth. It's not like they are sending graphics or videos through the connection. You would really need to worry about lag though. Latency is an issue with online games and wireless connections add ton of it. Remember you are sending a signal from your computer to the phone and the phone sends it to the nearest antenna which could be miles away. Then it goes from the antenna to its local server then to a few more servers before it reaches the game server. Then it has to come all the way back and do it all in milliseconds. So check your ping timed and if they are over 200 then you might not be able to game

I use my tethering to play Halo: Reach matchmaking, and even when throttled, there's no lag. Uses an average of .75MB/minute while playing. I usually only see 5MB of usage/match.

That isn't bad at all.
I bought Watchdog3G Pro for like three bucks and its a good app but it sucks down a lot of battery juice.
I browsed a few websites for like 7 minutes and watched a 3 minute youtube video. Watchdog reported that I used 26mb during these sessions.

What do you mean "free"? It depends on your data plan...
so if i have free internet on my phone it would be free to use the 3g to run the internet w/o gettin any bills added on my phone. my bad for the dumb question im just curious cuz its my first time ever using this app.

Yes, if you have a unlimited data package, then there will be no additional charges. However, if you do not have one, you will exceed your cap quickly, and they will charge you accordingly.

Even with an unlimited data package, isn't there fine print somewhere that says there is a 5gb data transfer limit?

Unaware of such fine print, but if you do find it... can you let us know?
I just checked the fine print. The 5gb cap applies to roaming, air cards, and tethering. (like if you added a tethering option to your plan) Using wifi tether or USB tether should show up as normal data usage.

The only thing they can do because u signed for unlimited data is they could throttle you meaning they will slow your internet connection down but ive never herd sprint doing this however tmobile will if you go over 5g a month but they wont actually charge you extra

From my understanding (and no, i've never seen it in writing), most of the
carriers enforce a cap, somewhere between 5 and 10gb, depending. If you are
on an unlimited data plan, they can't charge you more, so they just throttle
your connection to limit your data for the rest of the billing cycle. I could be
wrong on this though, haven't even come close to capping.
As far as charges for tethering, if you asked your carrier, they'd be more than
happy to charge you the $30 tethering fee (or whatever it may be). My feeling
is that if you are already paying for unlimited data, and you aren't abusing the
service, it's not right for them to charge you extra for a feature your phone
should include.
The only company ive known to inforce throtlling is tmobile theyll send, out a text saying we are resticting your data conection through this billing cycle howver i hVe never had that on sprint and my brother has been fine on his dx on verizon and hes been using wireless tether for a couple of months now
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Don't worry about data caps on sprint. Sprint is the only provider that has truly unlimited data and won't charge you extra, throttle you, or drop you for using enormous amounts of data. The CEO of sprint proclaimed this about a year ago i believe
oh i forgot. Applications such as PDAnet allows you to tether your phone without letting the carrier know so they think its normal data usage. I doubt they will give you a call asking but if they do just tell them you browse the internet with your phone a lot. They can't prove it
If your ROOTED it is!!

This month I started using my hotspot feature for all my home internet needs. Needless to say, I burned through 5 gigs in a few days. I remember that T-mobile announced that they were going to throttle anyone that passes through the 5 gigs for the reminder of the billing cycle. I got a text from T-mobile saying that i was going to be throttled but its been a week already and im still seeing the same speeds.
Does anyone know why i havent been throttled? I am using the dumbphone unlimited 10$ internet so im wondering if that has anything to do with it?
How do you burn 5 gigs with a dumb phone? I can barely go over 2 gigs and I'm using the n1 and I'm a heavy user too

I GOT IT ONCE, sorry about the caps. I was just over 10 gigs when they sent it, I didn't get throttled though, and they just warned that if my speeds continued they would throttle.

It doesn't look like at&t has a set amount that look for. Seams like they cap whoever and whenever they want. One of the horror stories I read, was someone with a new skyrocket. He says that right at the 2gb mark, he got capped. Went from high 20mbps to less then 1. I guess take the story with a grain of salt cause I just read it as a response to an article. No idea if it true or not.

I got a text half way through my billing cycle at 5.65gb. I have since stopped tethering due to work schedule not allowing me to tether.
I got a text and email at around 3.5gb used saying i was nearing my 4gb limit, when i reached the 4gb limit they capped my speed at under .5 Mbps and also charged me $10 for 1GB of extra data usage and it said that for every 1GB over my 4GB limit i would be charged $10 and this was all in my first month of having AT&T.

Well yeah, if your on a tiered data plan they will obviously charge you for going over your data limit, I had no idea they throttled you though. I'd complain because I'm on an unlimited plan and they have never throttled me. Not even after getting a text message about it. I figure if I can use 10 gigs of data unthrottled paying $30 for unlimited, you should be able to use the same amount considering it would cost you around $100 to use that amount.

Think about it at&t has 17 million unlimited users not counting T-Mobile, some places don't have Wi-Fi. So you have to use your unlimited data plan.

How is not using your internet connection for a day any kind of protest? Aren't you just applying 100% throttling to yourself - doing the very thing you're actually protesting against, but more so than the people you are trying to protest?
Protest.
Turning off your phone saves them money, you're not using their towers. You'd be better off constantly using your unlimited data once throttled - stream, torrent, whatever - because that'll actually hurt them. Or switch carriers.
But if you don't wanna use your phone for a day, by all means...
How the hell do you use 3Gb's in a month...

I fail to see how saving At&t money by turning your phone off is a boycott? Unless its an early April fools joke by suggesting that? I fear when Verizon follows AT&T and starts throttling us. I'm averaging 24-26GB a month. No I don't tether either, and I switch to wifi when its available. 35ishGB if you include data when on wifi. They advertise blazing fast LTE (and Verizon lte is extremely fast) and then cap it. Now home internet companies are starting to cap? Why are we regressing in technology not moving forward?
