I am currently running Phoenix ROM on my Captivate, its all rooted and unlocked. I received a text from AT&T that the Android 2.2 update is available for the Captivate through Samsung Kies. I want to update to that because my Captivate is really starting to lag and freeze a lot.
Is it safe to just update to 2.2 with Kies? Or are there any additional steps that I should know?
Please help
You can try it from Phoenix, it probably won't work.
To be safe use [STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY to flash stock before trying the update.
Stock isn't any better btw.
Oh and before the flames start, this should be in Q&A.
Kies won't let you update to 2.2 unless you are on a stock system (2.1). You will have to flash back to 2.1 stock, then you can update to 2.2. It's very easy. If Kies gives you "unregistered device" when you try to update, you will have to do some editing to your nv_data.bin file. There are threads here to tell you exactly what to do, or let me know if you need assitance; I have done that several times. Good luck.
Oh, yeah, if you are on GB bootloaders, only flash to stock with Odin3 1 click - DO NOT use the 3 button fix to go back to stock from GB, as that will ensure a bricked phone.

Since you're on a Phoenix ROM, why don't you just flash a 2.2 or even a 2.3 Phoenix ROM. I've tried Mosaic ROM from TeamPhoenix and it was pretty good.
I advice you to flash a custom rom , there is plenty out there .Btw If you go back to stock you will lose root .
Why is this in the DEVELOPERS section? There's a Q&A section that would be a much better place for this.

Hopefully a mod will move it.
Did like the instructions said to do for ODIN 1 click and completely bricked my phone. I tried running it in admin mode and changed the compatibility mode as well but it still didn't flash to stock. It freezes up as soon as I press start.

Put your phone into Download mode then try Odin 1click again. Then you can use AIO Captivate Toolbox to root and ROM your phone to a cool Team Phoenix ROM.

First I have a Captivate 1007.
Very easy to get into Download Mode so I know the phone isn't bricked.
I was running a version of Serendipity Rom. I wanted to try something different.
So I used what I always use the ODin3 One-Click Stock back to Eclair.
I get nothing but a boot cycle showing the AT&T screen.
Must I go to Stock Froyo now?
Would appreciate some guidance as I'm stuck after a few hours of searching!
Have you tried to flash odin again

have read someone something the same what only works with him is flashing the leaked froyo. you may flash back to stock eclair after everything is working.
The leaked Froyo from Eugene?
I have that one I was just hesitant to flash it.
There is no .PIT file with it though. Is that ok?
EDIT:
Just tried with Odin3 1.7 got Eugene_JK2_Froyo.tar (2).md5 is invalid.
Going to try this one I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgears.exe

I have 1007 build, I would have to agree with ^^this^^.
Something might of happened in the flash. Try it again.
Use these specifically.
2.1 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SBSMALFJ
2.2 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QL6NX702
Working now after flashing with I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgears_1_.exe
What do you guys recommend flashing now back to original Eclair stock or staying?
Really up to you at this point. I don't bother with stock (original) firmware as they are bloated and whatnot.
Indeed. Going to try something with good battery life now!
Thank you for all the help fellas!
EDIT: Also I can't go back to 2.1 Stock. Only 2.2 Stock!
I just had to warranty my original Cappy because of a power button issue. It came stock with 2.1 Eclair and I never had any issues rooting/flashing/ or otherwise messing with it.
The "new" one I have has 2.2 Stock on it, is there anything different about what I need to do? Will ODIN 1-click bring it back to 2.1 without much hassle?
I looked for over an hour and couldn't find any specific answer.
Thanks for the time,

When I upgraded (way back when) to the official Froyo 2.2 through Kies, just to check it out, I could only get it rooted through this...View attachment SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse.zip
Or you could just flash a rooted Dev Kernel through Odin.

I cant verify this but i did have trouble as well re-rooting it after i did the kies update so i just flashed JF6 with odin one click and then re rooted it and its been fine every since. Im not sure what att did but this KB1 through kies sure made it hard to re root when i did the update and i wasnt impressed by it either(go figure). I hope that helps. I do know that odin one click to JF6 will just about fix everything or if your having trouble rooting with the 2.2 KB1

Yes everyone it does belong in QA and I am sure it will get moved.
To answer your question about 2.1, becareful and have a read through this thread in relation to my experiences with an 1104 build:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105776&highlight=1104 downgrading with JF6 was bad juju
---My opinion follows as this is what worked for me -----
I would just flash to 2.3.3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127249
Or just the stock AT&T boot loaders from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129821
Then go about loading your desired kernel/rom combinations
Hello,
I have a unlocked and rooted Captivate. Recently in installed OCLF Lag Fix and did "OneClickLagFix V2+". It is safe to update to android 2.2 from 2.1? If yes, then what is the best way?
Thanks in advance.
Just disable lagfix and flash any custom 2.2 ROM you want inside CWM.

Thansk for the reply. I will do it tomorrow. I am new to android, I hope all goes well. Will update my results.

Don't forget to remove the ext2 tools after disabling lagfix.

The only time my phone has ever been on lagfix is when the ROM I flash comes with it. I really don't see any difference at all in performance with or without it. The only reason I'm not on GB is because I had TONS of problems with apps working and got fed up with it. If my signature still says KF1 then its old. I'm on XDA app so I can't tell.
Hello All, Finally I updated my Captiavte with Andriod 2.2 few days ago. I was not able to do that before because of some issues."
I un-lagfix my mobile and used Odin3 v1.0 to flash "I897UCKB1-homeBinary.tar ROM...
I feel now that my mobile is slower then before... But got some new features.
Can anyone tell me difference between "I897UCKB1-homeBinary.tar" and ''I896UXJL1-stock"?

4 letters. I896 is a canadian Captivate. No idea what jl1 is (2.1 or 2.2).
Hello All,

Is 2.3 available for captivate ?
Many flavors of 2.3, just be sure to read the installation instructions and understand GB bootloaders before trying.
2.1 to 2.2 to Black Screen to Semi brick to Working Captivate...
Hello All,
I had some heck of the experiences in last 2 weeks which I would like to share.
-> I had successfully updated my captivate from Android 2.1 to 2.2. Using "I897UCKB1-homeBinary.tar" ROM from BriefMobile site. After this update my three button combo for entering recovery mode stopped working. I could only go into downloading and recovery mode by using Android SDK.
-> And as written in my earlier post, I felt that speed is slow so i "lagfix"-ed it. This gave very good results and all was working fine...
-> Until one day... I was installing blik calendar widget after downloading it from site(I don't remember link now)... This installation never ended, it was continuing even after 15 mins so I used Task Killer to kill the installation... After that it became very slow... I restarted the mobile and what the hell!!!! mobile was stuck at boot screen... Mobile was stuck at "S" logo.
-> I tried all the combos I could find on net to enter into downloading mode but none work. Computer was not recognizing captivate while it was stuck as S logo.
-> After few days I used USB JIG method to bring my captivate into downloading mode.
-> Tried to flash earlier installed ROM "I897UCKB1" via Odin 3. It was successful but now after boot animation I was getting black screen. Lights on button were glowing on pressing and mobile was vibrating but ... It was in useless state.
-> Tried to flash "I896UXJI2" ROM, same condition as above.
-> Then I tried to Flash "I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.zip" downloaded from xda... with repartition option checked. It stucked in between and i had to remove battery.
-> Now mobile was in Semi Brick state.
-> All this time mobile was "lagfix"
-> Then somehow I got back my captivate using :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7614957&postcount=6
-> Now captivate is working find but still 3 button combo is not working...

First, if you are at stock 2.1 eclair, you can use the 3-button odin one-click. As long as you have the eclair/froyo bootloaders, that will work properly. But for the love of all that is sacred and captivatible, make 100000000% sure you have the proper bootloaders first. Flash back to stock eclair if necessary to make sure of this. I cannot stress this enough. If you do not have the eclair/froyo bootloaders in place before using the 3-button fix, you will murder your phone. It will die, and you will most likely have to pay real money to get it fixed. Make sure you have the eclair/froyo bootloaders before using the 3-button fix.
(Sorry. I just wanted to make sure that you avoid an all-too-common issue on the board.)
What may be a better option for you would be to upgrade to Gingerbread. Part of that upgrade process will flash the GB bootloaders, which will automatically have your button combinations fixed.
In either case, there is some level of bootloader flashing involved, which does mean some level of risk - make sure to read up on it thoroughly before you do anything.
And custom roms, in my opinion, are always better than stock. Clockworkmod Recovery is something you'll definitely want to have (and is usually included in the kernels that you'll flash along with custom rom upgrades).

Like Atomic Fusion 1.5 and Cog v2, both are awesome roms.
Both will be developed even further, when source comes out! (The Official 2.3 update from ATT)
Hi, i'm new to all of this flashing stuff. I'm running CM7 on my captivate and i was just wondering if GB for it came out for it, would i have to flash back to stock before i can update or can i just update out of CM7? While i was trying to flash this CM7 i had problems and had to keep on flashing back to the stock rom(2.1) and when i ever i tried to do a upgrade on kies the phone wouldn't sync because it would just keep crashing.
CM7 is GB. The only ROM you could flash would be MIUI without going back to stock.

Like said you can only flash MIUI. Everything else needs to flash back to a stock because you need to repartition your phone. Gingerbread has not been released officially for I897 but it has for I896. Though none official there are a ton of Gingerbread leaks on the dev section.

You might be able to update straight from CM7 and do just fine. However, I would advise and I think others would too, to flash back to stock using odin one click. Have all of your stuff backed up externally, run a master clear, and then attempt the update. This is a surefire way to have nothing go wrong as you are coming from factory software.
Reboot your PC and try Kies again. And I think its Kies Mini that does the update not the full Kies program. But its not a special process. They walk you through it and if you can flash a custom rom you will have no problem with the kies mini process.
att gingerbread isnt officially out and YEAH right they would ever give a date....
also dont use keis for anything keis sucks!. use xda site. read xda site. read new user guide (below). read STICKES (explained in guide).
flash back to 2.1 ( or any stock with .pit file or "one-click odin" stock flash)
odin flash (NOT one click) gingerbread bootloaders (find in dev section of captivate)
odin flash (NOT one click) a kernel with cwm built in
cwm flash ANY captivate rom from dev section

cm7 uses a different partitioning table. STOCK IS A MUST to go backagain KIES IS ****
there are odin one- clicks for 2.1 2.2 and kf1 2.3.3 leak

This guy seems a little new to the scene so I wasnt going to throw him into the Odin stuff just yet. Its good to know about and while kies isnt the best it is the factory software and is easy for new people to use.
Doesn't matter if he is new. He decided to use CM7 and/or MIUI you NEED to repartition your phone. Kies is just a different UI ODIN with alot of extra checks that are useless. If he wants to move back to I897 roms or to I9000 ports he has no choice on the matter. But like everything else always a good idea t have a Jig just in case and try to use packages that DO NOT include bootloaders when ever possible (not sure if you need to flash bootloaders if you partition)

You should not need to flash bootloaders if the only thing you are doing is going from CM7 to stock based GB ROM. And I believe GB bootloaders are backwards compatible to 2.2.
OP, since you are on CM7, you WILL need to flash back to stock in order to get back to Samsung ROMs, as the phone must be repartitioned.

OP didn't indicate whether he has installed i9k GB at any point; to be 100% correct:
If OP flashed CM7 straight from Eclair/Froyo, he will need to flash GB bootloaders for a Galaxy S device.
IF OP has previously flashed i9k or i897 leaked GB, then he does not need to flash new bootloaders ever again.
hey guys just grabbed this samsung galaxy s captivate from a friend whos dad found in las vegas sooo i guess its mine now, i have no plan on using it as my phone just for developement but i see that this is the rogers version (i896 while the at&t is the i897) and the forum only has it for the at&t version so im guessing they can use same root methods and use same roms correct? i see that a 2.3 update rolled out for it via kies but this one is still on 2.1 and i saw you can only root it on 2.1 and 2.2 so im staying here for now, i was guessing that superoneclick or gingerbreak could root this phone so ill try them both. one last question is there a better version of touchwiz ported to it? like galaxy s2-s3 look and feel? if now i was hopeing to get CM 10.1 on it, ccan somone point me in the right direction please?
Edit: i rooted it with z4root and was successful, i tried to get CWM on it but it seems that Rom manager dosent support andrid 2.1, and if i do get rom manager on here is there one for my i896? or do i just use the at&t cwm?

Yes, same device, different branding, better modem/radio. You can flash anything found here, and some from the Galaxy S i9000 section. As for rooting:
1. Grab a kernel for your current ROM version. I think the latest Rogers ROM is KH2, but you'll have to check on that. If you're not on it yet, grab this http://hotfile.com/dl/130585492/8ca639c/SGH-I896_RWC_I896UXKH2.rar.html (pass:sampro.pl), and flash it through Odin(I'm not sure if its included. 3. Reboot into recovery, flash http://downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip
4. You now have root. Mod all you want, and proceed to flash yourself to JB 4.3, or any other version you want

Careful with flashing ROMs with bootloaders!
Bad flash may brick your phone with no DIY solution.
- Update to 2.3.3 via Kies (install correct Samsung drivers first, follow the instructions)
- Reboot to make sure all is OK
- Go to Download mode, Flash Corn kernel to get CWM (find it in attached guide, read carefully and install correct drivers)
- Reboot to make sure all is OK
- Download CM10.1.2 Stable + Gapps, copy to your Internal storage (not SD card)
- In Recovery, do Factory Reset, Clear cache, Clear Dalvik
- Flash CM10.1.2. stable + Gapps (follow the instructions in the guide, no root needed to flash custom ROM)
- Enjoy rooted Android 4.2.2

thanks for this! going to update it to gingerbread when I get home, I see that I have to flash a kernel in order to get root and CWM, this would have to be my first time so I hope I don't screw up xD I still don't quite know what kernels are even though I have been rooting/flashing for a long time. I have Hard bricked soooo many of my Samsung devices, like 2 or 3 and I wanted to cry when I bought my GS2 xD.
The good news is that Captivate is hard to brick. The only critical part is bootloaders update. Leave this task to Kies, millions of phones got updated this way (including mine). Yes, there are reports for bricked Captivate after Kies, but hope everything will go smoothly. Just follow Samsung's update instructions. Google what Kies version is recommended for Captivate update (i don't remember, sorry). To update to latest stable CyanogenMod read the guide and follow the instructions closely. You'll find inside the links to one-click Corn kernel update. Careful with Heimdall drivers, they are for a specific USB port (it is explained in the guide). Again, no root is needed for upgrade process, only CWM. CyanogenMod comes rooted. Good luck!

It's a hardware modification. No use to do it now on a 3y old phone. Just update your phone to a stable Android 4.2.2 build and go light on apps and data. Don't expect much from a single core CPU and limited RAM phone. Nobody ever expected that Captivate Android development will go so far. Use what you got and upgrade the phone when you need more muscle.

CM10.1.2 Android 4.2.2. is the latest Stable release. Don't get confused with CM10.2 Android 4.3 Beta.

Yay it worked thank you so much I'm enjoying every bit of it, one last question though xD I noticed this even without it being rooted and its doing it now, the WiFi signal on the status bar is always on the bottom two signals, this doesn't happen with my tablets, I don't see it taking a bit for stuff to load.

Different levels for each indication bar, probably. Is the WIFI working correctly? If yes, then nothing to fix here.
