overclocking - Nook Color General

Just finished the manual nooter process. Downloaded setcpu. Just reead that I need a custom kernal for overclocking? I assume I am still on stock android system because I can still get to the nook home screen....???
Do I copy the overclock .zip to the sd. Boot into CW and install it? If so, anyone have a link to the kernal I need?

Yes just put the file in the root of your SD card boot into cwm and flash the zip. Since you are on stock 1.2 you should he using dals 06302011 stock froyo kernel on emmc. To get it just go to the development sub forum and click the kernel thread posted by Dal.

Ill ask one more question. I want to get n64oid but it wont show up in market. Do i need a froyo rom or is there a different method for making it show up in market?

Um Im not running stock 1.2 so not sure if your talking about the nook market or the android market. But I believe that all the emulators made by the maker of n64oid have been pulled from the market anyways. You can get the app directly from the developer at http://slideme.org/application/n64oid

Trying to download sam app and it says my phone does not allow non market installs. How do i fix this?
Also, when people say the "root" of my phone. Do you mean the sd?

You have to enable nonmarket app installs. It should be under settings ->applicatiins. Then check allow non market installs. I'm not sure how the manual nooter for 1.2 looks like cuz I never used it. You'll have to be at the android home screen not the nook home screen (assuming its similar to 1.1 when I had mine auto nootered.)

[Q] Captivate market deleted, what do?

Hello, guys. This is my first post after lurking for a while, adding roms and getting all of the good stuff for my captivate. But i bumped across the new market. I didn't follow instructions completely and deleted the market. So how should I fix this? I don't want to reflash my phone, because this would take 6 days and I am going on vacation in a few days, and I don't think I will survive without my beloved phone.
Any help on how to download the market app would be much appreciated. I have the android market app v2.12 but it will not let me install through my computer...
Still have the *.apk for the new market? If not you can go to the Themes Forum and do a search there - someone had the *.apk file for the new market app. You can download it - put it on your SDCard and then run it through your file manager - should install and your back in business.
Will need to use the SEARCH feature to find it though as I don't have the link.
Allright, thanks. I hope this works because normally I could not install apps directly to my phone because of at&t but i will try this.
btw.. are you on a stock ROM (2.1) or have you flashed to a custom ROM? Also if your phone isn't rooted this method won't allow you to install the app.
Sorry forgot to mention it.
And uh.. it never takes me 6 days to flash - usually takes me about 15-20 minutes to flash back to stock, install the new ROM, and restore my applications/app data.
It WAS on android 2.2 but I'm not sure if it is anymore because i tried restoring it to factory settings. And I'm talking about sending it to samsung to reflash it, I don't know how to do it myself :/
Oh, and yes. It is rooted.
and the app from there is kind of messed up... Very glitchy (crashes a lot and lags like crazy) and doesn't show every app in searches, like z4root which is how i easily rooted my phone the first time.
So i really just want the old market back but it will just not let me.
Go into Menu -> Settings -> About Phone and look to where it says "Firmware Version". If it says 2.2 and your phone has been rooted it should work fine.
Otherwise... you would at least need to Root it if on 2.2.
And if your not on 2.2? I'm not sure if this will work as I know it was pulled from a 2.2 updated phone.
Ok.. Plan B
You should be able to find the old Market app inside the *.zip file of any ROM you have downloaded. Just make sure they are 2.2 Froyo ROMs
Open up the *.zip file and go into system/app and look for (I'm 99% sure) "MarketUpdater.apk"
Copy that file to your SDCard and install using your file manager - should overwrite everything and hopefully your good.
Also.. you could go to your Menu --> Settings --> Applications and probably uninstall the current Market app you have downloaded first - delete any cache/data under there first before uninstalling.
Hopefully that will throw back on the original market app and your all set.
The only problem with that is... It was this one click downloader thing... Odin3. So I don't know... It also won't let me reupdate it for some reason....
Hrm.. This is from the OTA JH7 zip I have lying around. Give this a try and see if it works.
If not you will need to re-flash back to stock.
Could you supply me with a good rom thats easy to download and has the market and ****, like android 2.2, because the odin crap doesn't work for me.
Hrm.. I'd say go here if you wish to install a custom ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819105
Then a few options you have is Cognition, Auxura, or Assonance.
I've ran all of them and they are all great ROM's. I currently am running Assonance with the Gingerbread theme and it runs great.
Just make sure to do the reading first then download the ROM and you should be on your way.... just remember failure to follow the directions if on you and your warranty is already toast
Its already too late for my warrenty..... But I'll go ahead and try these. Thanks.
Actually. Something that would REALLY help would be helping me get into download mode. Every time i plug my phone into the computer in download mode it says usb device not recognized. How do i fix this? I've tried about every samsung drivers... None of them work... If i could get it into download mode i could get it working easily

[Q] Question about ROMs

So I have my Nookcolor rooted with the autonooter program, but I want to take it a little further.
Keep in mind that I am VERY new to Android Modding and have little experience.
Because I have my Nookcolor rooted I was blessed to be able to access the Andriod market and I downloaded an app called ROM Manager. I was wondering if I were to download Andriod 2.2 and write it to my SD card, could I use the "boot ROM from SD card" feature to run 2.2 on my Nookcolor? I am sorry if what I am saying is completely ridiculous, its because I have no experience.

You can't do that at the moment.
However, if you want to give 2.2 a try on your NC, this is the thread you want to read:

All roms have to be tailored to the particular device. Cyanogen Mod 7 will be our 1st hope for a real rom.

The Ultimate Noob Guide-Need Help Please

Hi guys,
I recently bought a Nook Color and i want to root it. I am hearing things about Autonooter and putting an image on my micro SD card. Personally i just want the best option to root my Nook, i want to overclock it aswell .
Really sorry if someone has already posted a thread like this, i tried searching for one.
I havent opened my Nook Color yet so guessing the software would be 1.0.0 so how would i root it to 1.1.1 and also stop OTA and install a overclocking software.
Thanks, XDA is amazing, recently rooted my Notion Ink Adam
I too would be interested in such a thing. There is information all over the place, but most seems to be geared toward people that understand the "lingo" and such...
I agree
reading MD5 hash
I'm pretty new to this- I have my NK running 1.0.1 using autonooter and want to update to 1.1. I think I've got a grip on using ClockworkMod, but in the instructions for downloading the 1.1 kernel, it says to "check the MD5 hash"- how do I get this info from the downloaded ZIP file? I don't want to even try and do the update without making sure the download is not corrupt.
Thanks!

I have to say though, to the OP, that reading through all the guides (and some comments) in the dev forums would be the best because you'll learn all the ins n outs. Having a noob guide is fine but it's fun searching for the info yourself and you'll learn/remember a lot more about your device. having a noob guide that is not comprehensive enough just promotes needless questions when the info is all over the place elsewhere.
Thanks for the link superkevx! Additionally, is there any way to do the check on the Nook itself? I downloaded it using the stock browser & can pull the SD card and check it on my 'puter, but it would be nice to be able to just do it locally.
I agree with you comment about the noob guide- I've learned so much trolling the dev forums...
i do try to find everything its just some things i dont get:
like clockworkmod, i think its to do with disabling OTA but im not sure
which is better, autonooter or installing on SD
,if you could answer these questions i would be really grateful thanks
From one noob to another...

Patrikc8- from my experience (have ROM Manager & Clockworkmod installed in prep for 1.1 update), Clockwork mod is used for making system backups and doing system restores (including installs of custom ROM's)
As far as the SD vs autonooter- installing to the SD means that you typically don't touch the original system files on the Nook itself- good for trying out a ROM that you are interested in but not sure you want to keep. There may be a performance hit though because you're constantly reading from the potentially slower SD media (correct me if I'm wrong on that anybody). I used autonooter to root my Nook and it has worked great since- it is apparently a very easy way to root and I had no trouble doing it.
Aha!

For what it's worth- did a little investigating & you can use Astro file manager to get the MD5sum- just do a long touch to the file in question and choose "Details".
SHould i use auto nooter 1.0.1 or the nook color v1.1.1 ROM?
and im guessing you have to root it first then install a rom then install a kernal?
would there be a big difference in 1.1.1 and 1.0.1 ?
I bought my Nook Color a couple of weeks ago. It was on 1.0.0. The first thing I did was update to 1.0.1. I then downloaded the Autonooter for 1.0.1 on my pc. I also installed Win32DiskImage.exe on my pc, and followed the directions to burn the image to my sd card. I followed the instructions exactly as they are laid out on nookdevs. I then reformatted my sd card back to normal to use for storage in my device.
One thing that happens when you run autonooter is that clockwork recovery is installed. This is simply a tool that will allow you to perform functions at a lower level than the android interface will allow. It my look a little intimidating at first, but go slow, and make sure you are absolutely sure that anything you do in CWR matches what it is listed in the instructions posted. Every action requires a confirmation, so, again, go slow and think it through.
A few days later, the 1.1.1 update came out. I used the updated Rom and instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932145
Something that I found confusing is using alternate home screens. I finally determined that Zeam was the right choice for me. It is free in the market. The other tool you should download from the market is called Home Switcher. It will let you switch between different launchers (e.g. Zeam, BN stock home, etc.). Again, you will probably have to experiment a bit to get things working the way you like.
Lastly, to improve the performance overall, I flashed a few different kernels. You may want to play with your nook for a while to get comfortable first. When you choose to flash a kernel, you will boot into recovery (this brings up the Clockwork Recovery program), and pick the zip file that you download to your sd card. My recommendation is to start with the 900mHz kernel first. Make sure your nc is stable, then try some of the faster ones.
As far as MD5s, I have not ever checked after downloading, and have not had any problems as a result. It is something I need to investigate further and start doing.
Hope this helps. I do agree with superkevx above. Browse and search and experiment. It is very unlikely that you will do any permanent damage to your nook, although it is possible. Everyone needs to have at least one bricked device along the way. I have learned more by rendering my devices inoperable and then figuring out how to get them back again. You know you're doing it right if your palms are a little sweaty as you wait for your device to reboot.
you guys have been great , thank you

[Q] B&N Crosswords?

So I have my nookcolor set up just the way I like it with CM7 7.0.2 and D's OC kernal.
It occurred to me that one of my favorite pastimes before I flashed CM7 was to play the original Crosswords that shipped with the nook. Short of reflashing back to stock, and risking an unintended (and unwanted) 'upgrade', and pulling the apk from that image, I no longer have the crosswords apk that shipped with the nookcolor.
Does anyone have that apk or a link to the file so I could put it on my nook? I've tried the other crosswords from the market, the B&N was the favorite.
Thanks
EDIT:
That's a big never mind. Found them in the right sub forum. duh.
1 can of egg remover, please.
looking for the same thing
hello, i'm looking for the same thing. I even tried to pull the original apk off of my nook color prior to rooting it and installing CM7 on it. But everytime I try to run the crossword apk it gives me an error. I'll let you know if I can figure this out.

Do you have a link to it? I'm kind of interested now. I searched in the Apps sub-forum but it didn't return anything.
I found the an old apk here : http://code.google.com/p/nookdevs/downloads/detail?name=nookCrossWord.apk&can=2&q=
Tried installing it on my NC 200 something nightly , but when It crashes when I try running it

How are you "installing" it?
You all know many of the original apps were customized for the stock Nook ROM....
I run it fine under CM7. I just grabbed the .apk from the stock ROM and installed it under CM7 a long time ago. Ever since then it just comes back from my Titanium Backup restore when I switch/upgrade ROMs. I don't feel comfortable posting the .apk here for legal reasons, but I did want to chime in that it works fine under CM7 and MIUI.
Shortyz crosswords is a great market alternative. It automatically downloads several national crosswords every day.
Using 7-zip, you can extract the crossword apk from one of the the original roms, and like the prev poster said, it installs and runs perfectly on cm7.

I downloaded the app, put it in my dropbox and downloaded it to the NC, then installed it.
got it
Thanks for the great replies everyone. I ended up going back to the stock ROM and then used the ManualNooter to root my device. Now I have both the capabilities of CM7 and the stock Nook Apps as well.
I still also have all my shelves and original ebooks installed and have access to everything on the market as well.
Thanks to GabrialDestruir for the great walkthrough
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027&highlight=overclock
got it
i ended up going back to a CM7 to test this out. And after pulling the original Crossword.apk from the stock 1.3 ROM I was able to get it installed and running with no problems.
However, now that I have the latest nightly build of 214. http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=encore&type=nightly
I am having boatloads of force close errors. Mainly on startup I am getting force closes on the google apps (gapps), google framework, and one of the apps i installed from the market as well. I am also unable to run the Facebook for Android app. I tried re-running the Set Permissions, and tried to clear the Davlik Cache as well.
Should I try one of the stable builds to fix these issues?
CM7.1 is out now try that

noob needs answers to noob questions

i got a 1.2 nook in today.
wrote an image to my 8gb to get clockwork recovery. after that, i used manualnooter.
reboot and everything looked good. i could open android market and whatnot but since im an android cell phone user, i wanted cyanogen mod on my nook
flash the latest nightly/gapps but couldnt get past the "touch the android to begin screen." did the four corners trick and it worked but there was no android market and googletalk wouldnt work (i would press it and it would auto close itself)
then i flashed miui, got a bunch of FCs.
then i flashed phiremod, same problems as the latest CM mightly.
my questions:
1. whats the most stable rom?
2. im use to everything working on my phone, are there just some things that are not going to work on the NC? obviously text messages and phone arent.
3. how do i get android market on there (so i can get google maps/youtube/etc)?
thanks
You probably need to repartition your nook if it came with 1.2 pre-installed

i dont know why but im about to partition it
any reason why i should be doing this?
The new nook colors have a different partition system than the old ones. Sometimes affecting installs.

[GUIDE] Install CM7 + Clockworkmod to EMMC - ALL NOOKS! (Updated:7/30/11)
eyeballer said:
This guide is intended to take you through the (mostly windows-based) steps needed to replace your internal nook rom with CM7, gapps and clockworkmod recovery 3.2.0.1 (latest as of 6/5/11) all on EMMC. This will work coming from any previous rom, including the latest stock software (excluding dual boot set ups, not supporting that here), no previous rooting is needed for a new nook, however don't forget to boot stock and register the device before flashing to CM7.

sweet! repartitioning did the trick. market is up and running
however, some applications i cant install. i can search for it and click on it but there is no install button => Facebook, Groupon
did some google searching, says its a problem with the new market. can anyone confirm this? one solution was to force stop/clear data on the market application. tried that and it didnt work. help would be appreciated
edit:
found a thread for my problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1207811
for future nc searchers: uninstalled market updates under manage applications in the settings.
