[Q] updating hboot spl radio, lost in a sea of outdated information - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I got another g1 and here,

CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.23.02
(Sep 2 2008)
I have used the androot method for root and flashed clockwork recovery,
I believe I have the spl for fastboot installed but I'm not sure and don't want to continue until I know what I need to do, any help guys?
//old post of my failed attempt on the first G1
"Ive rooted a few devices so im not new to the game.
So i tried to downgrade from 1.6 to 1.5 to root ect.
I havent even touched the spl yet, and after the update i power the device off and it will not power on, power button not working with any combos or alone. Also no leds at all when pluged in wall usb, or computer usb (multiple power cords, outlets, data cables, and 2 differnt PCs). Also 3 differnt batteries multiple sim cards and sd cards and without sim or sd, check connections with battery, not bent or deformed or damaged
I clearing screwed something up, possible battery pull at a bad time
So from what i have read i possibly have to do the motherboard replacement? Or something else? Jtag wont work if it wont boot period i believe

what actually was ur radio and spl's before u tried rooting???
and u used some application???
the procedure employed???
btw...is the battery properly charged?
either used another battery, or charge it thru some other source and then try using...

Everything was stock 1.6, so stock radio and spl, never got very far, downgraded to 1.5 powered off then no power up
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App

try turning on the device by holding home+power...that takes u to recovery....what happens when u do that?
and, by holding camera+power...if these are successful, u need not worry...
try that

Neither of those work

Bricked or not bricked

Hello mates, i´m having a problem with my HTC Dream from Orange, after several several fail trials to update my firmware i think i really made a mess, now my HTC with full bat can´t turn on, only gives me a blinking red led when i press power button. The only way to get it to work is by connecting to a USB cable to the computer or the charger.
I can get this way to recovery mode, wich is v1.4+JF and i can get to the SPL screen...i´m thinking the only way to get this to work is by the JTAG...plz tell me there is another way...
I managed to update my radio and SPL, but now it tells me my Battery voltage is to low! Please change battery...what can i do now?
Here is the info on my HTC Dream from Orange:
Firmware Version 1.1
Baseband Version 62.41S.20.13U_2.22.16.19
Kernel Version 2.6.25-b062f65f herbert and18-2 #18
Build Nunber 1.58.72.2 PLAT-1.0_gms-144337 CL#20416 release-keys

You're not bricked if you can get to recovery or bootloader. However, it does sound like a battery/hardware fail though.
Also... if your phone tells you to change the battery... well... may be you should listen to it.
Good luck.
I have 2 batterys for my Dream, fully charged, and it tells me always that msg. This only happened after i tried to flash it, that´s why i´m seeking help, i know it´s not a battery problem.
Try this:
Connect by usb and start the phone in fastboot mode. Flash AmonRa's recovery, boot into recovery then use it to wipe battery stats.

Another thread of "My G1 won't start"

hello all, i need help again this time.
let's get to the point.
this morning, i tried to charge my G1 because the battery has yellow color.
when i charged the phone, after around 5 minutes, suddenly my G1 restart itself and then after the "G1" logo, the screen go all black, sometimes not all black but there's a little glitch (white-green-purple-all little colors.)
the phone got heated on the bottom part everytime i power-on it, even just on battery (not charged).
i tried "Camera + Power", it's only getting to that red-blue-green-white screen that shows :
"DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT - 0.95.0000
CPLD-4
Radio-2.22.23.02
Sep 2 2008

and it stops there for AGES . won't do anything.
i tried "Home + Power", i tried to hold down that two buttons for 25 second more, but it keeps normal boot, shows G1 logo, and then black screen again.
i tried "Menu + Power", it just the same as "Home + Power"
my G1 has never been rooted, it's all original, i haven't done any system upgrading-downgrading things.
the charger is the original one, original from htc
the battery is new, i've just changed it one month ago.
that's all the informations that i can give.
so, anyone can help me solving this problem?
no one's wiling to help me?
anything you can say is helping me.
is my G1 bricked? but i didn't do anything to the system, not rooting nor flashing etc.
just normal charging and everything bad happened
It's not bricked. Hopefully, all hardware is still working. I'd say try for warranty stuff first, but if you have to, you could try downgrading using the DREAIMG.nbh then upgrade using the various zips (check unrooting guides, they have upgrades from 1.0 [dreaimg.nbh] to 1.6, latest update)
I don't have any links, but google is your friend.

DREAIMG.nbh is the RC29 right?
only the image, and i don't need any SPL or update.zip, right?
i guess i'll try this one, thanks

[Q] G1 freezing on BiffMod2.0

I recently flashed BiffMod2.0 to my rooted Rogers Dream using ezterry's EB1I port. I've got the DangerSPL, I've cleared the cache's and factory reset twice, but it keeps having this issue. When left for about 20 min to an hour, it'll lock up solid, whether I'm in the middle of something or its on standby -- and I can't shut it down until the battery is removed. If it freezes while locked, I can still hear the unlock screen working, and the buttons light up, but the screen stays blank. I thought it might have been an issue with the display, but it's also frozen solid with the screen on, while I was in the middle of using the phone.
Bad install or bad ROM?
Ya, 2.0 did that sometimes. it was so bad that I went back to 1.9.2. But then there was an update to 2.0.1 that fixed that, and now 2.1 is the latest. Try updating.

MAN, Biffmod needs Hard/Death/Haykuro's SPL not DANGER SPL (the one you got), it's not gonna work until you flash Death SPL in your phone
Before flashing, Turn off your phone & Press (Camera & Power), check which board you got (if it's PVT, then go for Death SPL (follow instructions, Stock > Root > Amon's Recovery > Radio Update > Death SPL > Biffmod) but if you got DVT board (as of me), never make a mistake of even downloading Hard/Death/Haykuro's SPL, they are not compatible with DVT phones, so avoid BRICKING your phone

Um, two problems. Death/danger spl are the same thing. It's the spl from the mt3g patched gor the g1. Also, the rom would be too big to install or wouldn't boot if there was a problem with the spl. There is a memory leak in biffmod 2.0, which causes the freeze. Update to 2.1.

They are same things mate but there's board difference (DVT/PVT) which actually matters in Danger & other SPLs

If they're *actually* the same they all work on the same type of board, wat you just said made no sense.
Also this is the second time I have accidentally given thanks because I'm used to having the quote button on the far right, ****ing hell.

I think you'll find your inability to follow simple instructions bricked your phone, a phone can't brick itself it can only do what YOU tell it.

HELP!! May have Seriously Messed up phone...

(Rogers HTC Dream)
Ok, so, i know this sounds ridiculous, and you may find yourself asking "WTF Was He Thinking?!?!?" But, was a late night, and i was quite possibly half asleep lol...
Ok, so, long story short, i have tried possibly every rom for the Rogers Dream, and majority of them didn't work for me, or atleast, if they did, not that well.... Cyanogenmod 6 worked ok, although it started to get slow pretty fast :/ Anyways, i had previously rooted and flashed my dream with the steps provided on cyanogen's wiki, but i had never updated the kernel or anything, so, i came to the conclusion that it was possibly my kernel that was un-allowing me to run most roms, so i decided to update my kernel using the steps here
"http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139"
Everything went well, kernel updated, wiped everything, except i accidently deleted my recovery.....but thought, no problem, i'll just follow the instructions on the thread, no biggie.....it said to download the "orange-1.58.73.2.nbh" and flash that......BUT... I Should have known that the Orange one was the one for T-Mobile!! But out of stupidity i didn't realize it and flashed it!! Now my phone won't boot up or Anything :/ when i try to boot into recovery OR Hboot, it shows the t-mobile startup flash, then shows an error with a triangle and a yellow exclamation in the middle, with a phone on it's side beside it!! :S
Did i completely mess up my phone?.... Someone please help!! x.x
I got a Rogers dream and I just push amonRA with adb. As for the exclamation screen, I think there is a key combo to bypass it. Something like volume up and power at the same time. I can't remember now the exact combination. Took a lot of Googling to find it, and if I remember correctly the dream has a different combo than the tmo did. But with this nexus one my memory has faded.
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
The orange nbh is orange not t-mob..
But has a eng spl so recovery is easy.. head over to my 2708+ radio thread and flash that, a 2708+ rom (most new roms support it and older ones the kernel in that thread will fix it.
Rogers if they are your carrier may cut wireless data there is a e911 wavier form to get around this search for it or ask the support person if they cut your data for detasils.
The good thing about using the 2708+ radio/kernel is extra ram, and it works on the rogers dream the same way as the non rogers dream thus you can ask more people to help support you with 2708+
Thanks for the reply guys,
ezterry:
thanks for replying, would had posted in your thread but didn't want to jam it full of even more posts of someone needing help lol...
as for your reply, it was after i had flashed the orange nbh that i was getting the t-mobile splash :S thus i assumed it was t-mobile.... but, as for flashing anything, i can't....when i try to boot phone in hboot or recovery, i get the error i previously mentioned, and when i normal boot, i can only get to the screen that says to plz insert sim card, and it won't let me pass that screen :S....that's where im stuck.....i tried using the usb cord to access adb through it, but on the comp it says there are no adb devices, i'm assuming it's because i can't get past the "no sim card" screen to enable debugging ..... Any suggestions?
Thanks!!
I'm going to hope you are doing something silly since your description indicates no problem with the phone.

I don't recall if adb is enabled by default on the orange rom; regardless this is the rom. (putting a sim card active or not in the phone may let you get further however ought not be necessary )
So either you got so anoyed at your phone you did phisical damage to it or you are attempting to enter HBOOT/Fastboot incorrectly.
Powering on when holding 'camera' is supposed to always bring you to the HBOOT screen; then pressing send or back as prompted will let you to the Fastboot screen (don't re-flash the orange NBH, say no if it asks)
Alternatively either booting with send or back will go directly to HBOOT.. (The rogers [2000 series] dream uses Send while the t-mobile (100 series) users Back but some SPL only provide the back options regardless of dream model.. I don't recall about 1.42.2000 so you will want to try both)
In theory Home is the only button to send you to recovery.
Once in fastboot it ought to be a full featured fastboot and the normal 2708+ install instructions will work using fastboot on your PC

Ahh ok lol, i'd installed RA recovery when i first got the phone, so it was the only recovery screen i remembered ever seeing, thus why i was confused, but yah, hit alt+L and saw the options, but yah, not that many :/

Apparently was entering it wrong, i was used to using Home+Cam+End to enter hboot.....so that's my fault....

When i enter hboot, it looks like a friggin rainbow now lol....red, green, blue, and white bars as the background :/ and once in hboot, it says "Serial0" in the middle of the screen :S and when i plug it into the computer, i tried hitting both back, and send, and it makes the "Serial0" dissapear, but seems no matter what i do, it won't show the phone as a connected device in fastboot :S
Thanks again for replying soo quickly and all the help u've been giving me, any advice on where to go from here or getting it to enter fastboot?
What you are describing is not 1.42.2000.. but 0.95.0000.. or that its likely the Dreaimg you flashed was the t-mobile rc29 and not the orange nbh..
Rc29 can be flaky.. but there are two options
1) go to recovery, alt+l and wipe, put a sim card into the phone and root via telnet.. assuming you have the 1.x radio of rc29 follow the link to my 1.33.2003 spl then with that install 2708+ normally
2) if you still can't boot you will need to use/make a goldcard (if you don't already have one this may require finding a friend's phone to help make one) and this time flash the orange nbh *not* rc29
0.95.0000 will not let you flash a rogers nbh so there is no way to re-flash with out a goldcard.. otherwise I'd just have you flash the roger 911 patch and re-root from there..
hey if you are still getting that screen with the yellow triangle and '!' that means you have stock tmobile recovery with no rom lol can you try to press (alt+L) hold alt and press L should make a list pop up.. if it does than maybe you can still re root it so than it will read your sim... but im not sure if the rogers G1 has and different software so it could possibly make it worse.. lol just a suggestion

Hboot says "Serial 0" and won't allow me to flash any images, phone doesnt have a recovery, will boot up now, but only to the android set-up process which i can't continue with because it won't accept my rogers sim card, despite the fact i unlocked the phone before all this happened :/ so i can't sign in to or create a google account. Have attempted every bypass to get past it with no success. Obviously since i can't get past it i have no access to adb...

Just out of my curiousity, got download the orange nbh file (make sure that it marked orange).
Format your SD card to FAT and put the nbh file in the root of your SD card.
put the SD card in your G1.
Boot up with camera+power and flash it.
See if that work.

I'm Really desperate x.x and i have been having the crappiest luck lately. I bought a phone off kijiji today, spent 3 hours trying to meet up with the guy to buy it, then when i did get it (after all the running around) i took it to "The Source" to get it activated in my name , and after 4 hours (5pm-9pm) they finally said they tried everything but couldn't do it because the phone is registered to someone with a contract that has a suspended account do to owing an outstanding amount of money!!
At this point, when you boot up the phone. What do you see?

OK! I am not sure why it will not let you activate your phone. But don't worry about that ATM.

Anyone can help me? Thanks in advance!
you have the most upgraded radio/spl that there is for the g1 (14mb ram hack) danger spl would be a step back. just flash rom of choice via recovery for fastboot flash will not work with your hboot
Yeah, Cyanogen is fully packed with stuff you don't need so I prefer FroyoByLazslo with a ICS taste. Really, it makes your phone look like a brand new phone. AND it is very fast. Dload it and you are done!
As is mentioned you do not need danger spl for cm
Actually I have a patched version (old now) of both cm5 and cm6 to use the newer radio/spl you have now and let you benefit from the extra ram they provide:
Cm6 stable:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/11548-CM6.1 2708port (for new radio+spl)
Cm6 rc1:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/9819-cm61-rc1-2708port-for-new-radiospl
Cm 5: (with post release stabilization patches)
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/11435-old-stable-cm-508-2708-port/
The cm6 kernels are a bit unstable (biggest fault is the battery drain after USB is disconnected). If you find problems update to another kernel, in its time the biff testing 20110222 kernel was popular:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11565574&postcount=670
(The 2708+ port is for your radio)
More resent is the froyo version of the ezgb kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14768272&postcount=2427
(For cm6 use the versions ending in 'f')
The reason cm officially isn't supporting the new radio is this was all released as cm6 went live. Thus to help people move to the new spl (well now not so new) I did try to make it an easy task to get the roms most were using thus have ports of various roms of the time.
Newer roms of course support the new SPL by default.

Hey team,
Please excuse any forum violations in this post.
Sorry to jack this thread, but I'm new and can't do much without posting 10 useful threads. Unfortunately, I have nothing useful to add.
I just bought a tmobile G1 on Ebay . I wan't to use it on my AT&T account ($10 plan) and I want to upgrade the ROM. I've searched and read and searched and read for 3 weeks. The more I read the more confused I get.
At this point, I would think the whole root and flash tech would be quite simple. The FAQs are from 2009-10 surely you've evovled since then. However, I find it all a confused mess. Please don't be insulted by this comment. I love what you guys/gals are doing.
I hate post and ask for help. Really I do. I'm actually willing to pay $25 via paypal for your time. It can't be more than 1/2 hours work. If you're interested please respond herein. My PMs don't work.
If this post violates any rules or you find it offensive, please excuse me that is not my intent.
Thank you.

you have a used g1 and you want to root it and use an att sim, easy to do and im glad you have searched the threads before you asked for help. if you have access to a tmobile sim with data it may be easier but you can do it without. or if your phone is firmware 1.6 you can simply use the androot.apk and skip a few steps.
for starters what is your firmware?
next write down everything on your hboot screen (power on holding camera)

good idea to use androot, if you dont have data on your sim its a bit more work to root with the dreaming.nbh method as you will need adb to activate wifi and if your new its a bit of work. when your done with root you will still want to flash a custom recovery and update radio, spl, and rom

I put data plan on last night, but I cant get it to work on the G1. It works when I put my sim in an at&t pantech P500.
I can make calls, surf web , logged in to gmail all via WIFI, but no 3G data on the G1.
Is it an APN issue?
Been reading on those this morning but I cant get in to the manual APN screen.
How do I do that? If that's the issue.

well to run any newer rom (made in the last two years) you will need to update your radio and hboot more than likely. when you power on holding home button what is the recovery you have? or what does the screen look like. also when you power on holding camera this will bring you to your secondary program loader (hboot)
write down everything on this screen and ill let you know what needs to be done to run a 2.2 rom

image must be on root of sdcard and be named correctly, note that if you are using windows it will add file extentions so name image just recovery
