I know you all were wondering where the charging LED is.... Well, you see that little dot in between the micro USB and micro HDMI ports? That's it.
(I apologize for the horrible quality pictures, they were taken with my 3DS.)
As you can see here, the charging LED does not work properly when the phone is on.

When you turn it (fully) off, unplug it and plug it back in, however, it works.
Clear shot.
And, once you turn your phone back on, it goes away.
This is a software bug that a rumored OTA bugfix may address.
Apps like lightfow can allow you to use the notification light for the time being as a charging indicator.
Thank you, I was curious about this myself.

i always used the light as an indication of properly attaching the usb cable, since it can sometimes be cumbersome, especially in the dark, when trying to insert it.
but then, when you use a cradle, who cares?
Not to mention your phone kinda turns on (if its already on) when you insert the charging cable/dock it.
Not true. You can plug the Droid 3 in while it is off, and it will continue to charge while being off without turning the phone on.

technically, yes. but there is actually a program that kicks in, that prevents the phone from completely powering up, and the also displays the sloshy battery icon. AOSP Android would automatically power up the phone.
the only reason your phone doesn't seem to power up is because of Motorola.
mine doesn't show up even I turn off the phone, why...
I've run the battery dead, and plugged it in and never got the charging LED to work. Is my phone defective, or is this still part of that bug? And why did Moto not hard wire this to the USB power. It'd serve as a diode, not letting the charge flow back through the USB cable (like when a laptop goes to sleep when charging) and would be a notifier, not to mention would be cheaper, replacing a diode that is probably already there and not having to use software to control it.
Wow, poor design.

So i accidently plugged in the usb the wrong way and the phone shut off. Have tried every button combination and holding down the powerbutton numerous times with no success. Led light doesn't light up and have tried leaving it in the charger for various hours and used different chargers. My next step was to disassemble the phone and hope a battery pull did the trick but that didn't work. However when I disconnect the black battery connector and plug in a usb the red led lights up for about 15 seconds and dissapears.
anyone know any possible solutions? I think my battery might have fried

Is there a way to jump the battery and hope that that works? I've jumped plenty of batteries on phones with removable batteries but I'm not sure if the Z has metal contacts for negative and positve

normally any device that has DC input (like usb) is secured with diodes so that even when a faulty charger is connected it doesn't fry. But that's my electrical knowledge speaking. Please reply when you found out what the problem is

Alright thx for the info but maybe you had another problem with you charger and the transformation from 12V to 5V was bad, that can't be controlled with only a diode. Or maybe your One X hadn't any security internally because the manufacturer wanted to save money on that component / no place anymore to put it in the phone.
Think I have something similar..... Connected to car charger, led didn't go red, pushed charger in moved wire in phone charger goes off, phone won't start tried all button combos.

No I don't see any damage to the USB port.
I did the same to my xperia Z1 (reverse biased it using usb and 5 volts wires) The battery however had charge so as soon as I connected the phone restarted and could not charge any more. Any solution please ????
Might be an old post but I had the same problem. I was fixing a cable (18V) and I wanted the range the cable in the corner. I was so lazy to use a screw driver or something else. So I used what I have in my hand: The jack cable, plugged into my phone. So I used the bare part of the cable (Don't ask me why, I don't know). I don't remember if my phone restarted, but he was fine. But not my jack connector. When I plug an earphone it says that my earphones are not recognized. So I change it (by my self) But still the same problem...
Seems like the problem comes from somewhere else.
do you found the fried parts of your phone or fixed it ?
i have same issue today i connected an experimental cable (v+ was placed into gnd pin and gnd to v+) to my lumia 625 and it flashes then shut off immediately now it show no sign of life not charging not turning on
anyone knows what parts have been fried ?

thank you for your links, I was actually considering this way of solving the problem
I am curious to see if somebody opted for the official support (also experiences with other manufactures are welcome)
I replaced the battery a few days ago, although the video by rounded.com simplified the removal of the outer case which is reinforced with teeth at specific sections. If you have a look at the separate YouTube video by TorensTeam you'll understand exactly what I mean. In the end I only needed to remove the singular screw near the sim tray, although there will then be five connections you need to unpick above and below the battery. The two upper connections are the easiest, and are similar to a stud press when fastening your coat. The lower three each have a latch you need to point upwards, before sliding out the ribbon cables and swiching the battery. My first attempt gave me a blank screen, although my second attempt was completely successful. I simply pushed the lower connections in as far as possible before lowering each of the latches. It is slightly unnerving, but if your alternative is an out of warranty repair you may have very little to lose. For what it's worth my phone feels twenty times better than before, although I'm using an app called safe charge to offset the sleep of death in addition As an aside, most high end phones seem to be incorporating sealed batteries, and depending on what you're prepared to buy the decision may have been taken for you.....
thank you deepershades, it's nice to have so detailed info, I am saving a copy of this thread in my pc

Hello!
I have a Xperia T where the battery is dead, i tryed to start the phone without battery and usb plugged in, it always starts in flash mode as i connect it, if i press the power button for a few seconds the phone vibrates but nothing happens, the screeen remains blank.
Hard reset works also,3x vibrate, but screen remains blank.
When the battery is connected, the phone just does nothing than a very tiny red flash in the moment where it is connected.
If i connect the battery while in flash mode, the green light turns off and a red light appears that is blinking unconstant.
I pushed the lower connectcors as far as possible, and locked them.
Is it possible that the screen only works with connected battery?
can anyone test this for me pls? it would be wasted money, if the screen is also broken..
hope for some replys
thanks
I already attempted this inadvertently when buying a separate gift, an Xperia M, for my mum. The battery in that model is removable but I didn't realise it hadn't been fitted and left it in the box together with the instructions. Upon attaching the charging lead the green LED murmured quickly but then nothing.
The short answer is no battery no screen.....
Okay, thanks for your reply!
Will try it then
Changing the battery helped nothing
When i connect the phone to charger or PC the green LED shows and phone is detected in Flashmode but after some minutes it restarts or something..
When i connect it with Vol- it stays in Flashmode and i can Flash wit SUS or PCC or Flashtool.
Sometimes PC detects an uknown device and led flashes red, but phone restarts after some minutes and LED gets green
When i disconnect the connector for buttons/display, only red led is flashing constantly as long as it is plugged in.
Battery never gets warm, but it should getin warm if its charged or not?!
Does anyone have a solution for keeping the screen on when wirelessly charging the N6? The problem seems to be that once full the phone stops charging and the screen will turn off. This is annoying when using a Qi dock at night.
Thanks

That won't work.
The problem is that the N6 completely stops charging when it reaches 100%. Compare that to the Nexus 5, which would go into "Trickle Charge" mode, but would always show a charging indicator as long as it was on the charger. This one simply stops charging, removing the charge indicator. This causes daydreams to stop (as well as the "Stay Awake when Charging" option), because as far as it's concerned, it's been removed from the charger. Once the N6 reaches 98% (or so), it will start charging again. The phone will come on, and if it stays on long enough, will even go back into daydream mode. However, as soon as it hits 100% charge, it repeats this process.
As far as I know, there's currently no fix for this. Google needs to set the N6 so that it still considers itself to be charging as long as it's on the wireless charger, like the N5 did.

Exactly... Hopefully there'll be a fix for this in the future.
i dont use daydream but i have the option ticked to keep screen on when charging.
i use a qi dock with an indicator on the front. blue when charging. green when not.
when the phone is full, lightning bolt goes away, charge lamp on the qi dock changes to green.
then as it need to "top off" the phone, the chargers lamp goes to blue, lightning bolt on phone pops up. tops off.
rinse. repeat.
what am i missing?
what docks/chargers are you cats using?
I have to same type Qi charger when it's green the screen will turn off after the prescribed time out period. That is my issue and I have keep screen awake while charging on in developers settings. I want the screen to stay on when full, green light on, currently my workaround is Tasker but apps like "Stay Alive" will also work.
Someone has posted a bug report for this issue. Hopefully it will be fixed. https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=85538

The problem is, what do we use to end daydream?. In use a qi and this is really annoying me but realistically there's not a lot that can be done without tasker.
Also daydream isn't really the same as "screen on". If the screen doesnt time out, you'll never get to daydream.

Can I ask what settings you have used in Stay Alive? I have tried using it, but my Nexus 6 still turns the screen off once the Qi dock has charged it to 100%.
UPDATE: Sorry, it was me being stupid. I had a Llama task which switched off the screen when the phone went from "charging" to "battery". Once I disabled that task, Stay Alive is working fine and the phone stays on.
Question for you, does the nexus 6 turn the screen on when the charging kicks in?
Picture it connected to a solar charger where you're walking in and out of the sun light..... My nexus 5 would always kick the screen on which would drain my battery.... Nexus 4 didn't do that... When charging I think only an led would light up...
I wouldn't keep the screen on a static image for an extended period of time for any reason, because amoleds burn in.

Hi all
Is it just me or after charging the device via Qi Wireless charger, does the battery drain quicker??
I charge mine via QI every night. It get great battery life. No issues at all.

Well I've gone from 49% too 38% in the time it took for you to reply! Reboot sorts it but still!!
Nope, no issues here, if check your battery page and see what is causing the drain. I get a full day of usage even with my heavy usage
It might be the charger. Have you tested it with other phones?
QI chargers actively communicate with phones while they charge them, so it could be that the charger is telling the phone it's getting more power than it actually is.
90% of my charging is done on Qi pad on night stand and I get phenomenal battery life.

Maybe it's just the case of the battery meter being screwy....as it seems to jump hideously...turbo charger is fine.
I get great battery life, I'm on the maxx though, I had the turbo for a month on tmobile. I had to tether for about an hour so it dropped my battery down 15%. But 2.5 hours of SOT and 16 hours off the charger. Connected to my moto 360 as well.

you could have a calibration issue, here's how to fix it;
plug in to your turbo charger,
press and hold the power button till the phone shuts off (on it's own, not just the power off prompt), keep holding the power button,
it will flash a battery icon and then show the charge %, make sure it matches what the os said (if you're mis-calibrated, it will not),
you can turn it back on, but leave it on the turbo charger till it's %100.
Some odd charger methods cause this issue (like usb3.0 ports)..
Good luck!

But my battery life has lessened a lot as I suspect too many apps are functioning in the background that disappeared when I was able to shut off the phone completely while charging overnight. I know two ways to re-start it once it's shut off and charged...
1) buy a Qi wireless charger.
Putting it on a Qi charging pad will automatically start the phone (if there's enough battery charge.)
So, actually charge the phone with a turbo charger plug -- then when ready to turn on the phone place it on the Qi wireless charger. I'm not the first to suggest it:

The Qi Wireless Charger works whether your phone is charged or not.. I went to the Verizon store and asked to see the charger demo'd... I placed my powered off, Fully Charged, Broken -power- button- Droid Turbo on the charger and it Came to life.
I immediately configured the phone with an alternate power button app to control the screen on/off. FYI None of the apps I found will actually power the phone on from off, but will control the screen once it is powered.
I actually tried everything in this forum short of the disassembly of the phone but that was next... the program download.. Reboot Fast Boot; I couldn't get it to download correctly. after about 3 hours I quit... drove to the store and the rest is history. So Glad Not to have Lost everything!..

As for shutting it off, there's probably apps to do that. If not, then just let the battery drain and die.
2) Here's also a bootloader method:

I only use the triple-coil tilt-style charger pads, as you don't have to worry about positioning the phone whatsoever -- it will hit a charger coil -- but those are still $15 - $20, and you don't need that for your purpose of simply turning on the phone. A single-coil will work, you just have to position it right (with the phone about 2/3 off the hockey puck)
also speaking of apps -- here's this:
Power Button to Volume Button
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teliapp.powervolume&hl=en
but it only works to turn off/on the screen when your phone is ON.
