[Q] Make Swype keyboard in portrait mode SMALLER? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd like to make the Swype keyboard, in portrait mode, SMALLER, so that it takes up less vertical space on the screen. I've tried a couple of the LCD Density programs, which apparently do their magic in a way which Swype ignores
How can I configure Swype to be smaller in portrait mode? (I rarely use landscape mode, and really don't care about it).
Thanks,
Jay

smaller ? ppl are looking in how to make it bigger
hmmmm , i know how to make it smaller , but you need ( Decompile - Compile ) and i'm not sure after you make it smaller it will work properly or no

hoping for something slightly less intrusive

Thanks for the idea. I'm hoping for something slightly less intrusive than that
I realise I'm probably expecting too much of the Swype software developers, to have actually put a font/size/magnification variable in their code in a way that can be tweaked straightforwardly...
Any other ideas?
Thanks!
Jay

It is possible using v. 3.9. version . You can resize the keyboard and move in 3 position: left, centre and right. I attached the portrait picture with full size but can be done as in landscape mode (see below).

I may be hijacking the thread a little, but it is definitely related, since I don't think I can follow the excellent advice which badmania98 kindly gave because of this other issue:
On my Samsung Galaxy Tab (rooted, running an Android 2.3.3 version) Swype says it is version 2.23.65.17423.830.GTP1000. I can't even guess how to relate that to the Swype v3.9 which badmania98 mentioned, and I certainly don't know how to change my Swype version.
And just to make things worse, this version of Swype is massively inferior to the version which had come on the Tab with its factory original Android 2.2 - it makes errors ten times as often as the older version did.
So, on the Galaxy Tab, is it possible to replace the built-in Swype with different/ newer/ better/ heck at this point I'd even take older version???
Thanks!
Jay

Why do you need screenshots of it on the the Touch Pro2? It looks exactly the same as it does on every other Android device, except those with customized home screens
There is a list of issues above you can use to determine if it's worth installing or not. Really, it only takes a few minutes to do. You could have found out the answers yourself in the time it took you to make both posts
Awesome!
I 'm excited about this But def going to wait for a lil more stability before i experiment

I'm ot in charge of the project, the project is basically a port from the topaz version. Once developers take hold of the project I'm sure the range of Android versions supported would increase.

I know you're not, you just gathered and compiled the files together. If you read the thread the files came from, you'll see that some are running 2.01
Now this looks interesting ..........
I am definitely looking forward to a more stable version of this!!! I love the Android OS!

Dual keyboard? Portrait/landscape switch???

Is there any possible way to have two different keyboards depending on orientation without having to set it? I would love Swype in portrait and Smart Keyboard or HTC_IME in landscape and not have to change it manually. I'm sure there are others who would agree >;] I'm guessing it would have to be a frankenstein mashup of two keyboards or if there is a way to add it into the OS.
This is relevant to my interests.
I think the best approach would be a customizable one so people can choose different keyboards because I won't want the same two as the next person. Just an idea to throw around if any devs are looking for new cool things to work on. >;]
I have really been wracking my brain as to how to make this work. I'm with you--Swype in portrait, stock in landscape. A mashup keyboard would be possible, if you could get the source from both. But that would be very difficult. The most feasible (and useful) way would be to have an app automatically change your settings for you based on orientation. There's no way to do this without root, though--no app has permission to change your keyboard settings. This would open a huuuuge security hole for spyware. So, we need root to directly access the configuration files and forcibly change from one keyboard to another. This is a huge can of worms to open, but it might just be doable. Any thoughts?
+1
I would like to see this as well! Though the stock keyboard for landscape is my preference. HTC_IME is a little too cramped for my tastes and the vibration lags a bit more.
YES SIR! I would love to see this happen. I use Smartkeyboard in Landscape and Swype in portrait. this would be SO helpful.
Man, I hate shameless bumps, but this would be a huge deal. I just want to get someone with some more skill to take a notice, so...

swype in portrait...HTC in landscape....is it possible to delete stock android kb?
Someone make a app that lets you configure the keyboard for both based on your installed ones and sell it at $.99 and you'll make some good money.
(If you can do any of that)
+1 on willing to pay for my idea brought to life ^__^
good idea. would pay to see it. i love swype but hate the space bar placement when in landscape.
+1 i want this so badly!
Yeah this would be great... Normal swype method and landscape better keyboard or the default one.
Since apps are made to work together on android, would it be possible to make an app that basically would consider itself a keyboard and it would just choose one keyboard to run while in portrait and another to run while in landscape? Don't know programming too well, just wanna throw ideas out there..
+1 for this functionality
(Swype in portrait, stock in landscape)
great idea dev needed
+1 we need a dev to make an app that has settings for what keyboard launches in what orientation i dont think it would be that hard if we get someone who knows what their doing to make it id pay for it swype in portrait and htc ime in landscape for me just have the app let you choose from whatever keyboards you have installed for the orientation so everyone will be happy and be able to choose

[Q] Capture a programs interactions with the system?

If this has been discussed and I have overlooked it in my searches please if you know point me in the right direction. here is an example of what I am trying to do: The sensorcalibutil_yamaha, I want to find out how it is working so I can write a very simple app kind of like the one in the Froyo ROMs but where I can input inverted values for certain axis without "calibrating" them all thus messing up other axis I want to stay the same. Then save those values like this utility does only with my input tweaked values. I have tried logcat but it does not do what I need. is there something I can do in ADB?
dono, there is a file in *deep breath*
/sys/devices/virtual/accelerometer/accelerometer/
called acc_file which is rw-r--wrx (kinda weird). It looks like it contains the current accelerometer info (if you rotate the phone it changes) but I don't have a clue where the information is being read from or what function is putting it in there.
What 'cha trying to do?
Sherpa
Invert only one axis by inputting calibration values manually so as to correct the rotation issue. In the froyo roms there is a gui to do what sensorcalibutil_yamaha does bit it reads the current sensor values and issues an "offsetUpdate" with the current values as assumed Level. But on us variants you are holding the device semi verrical part landscape to get it to sort of stay rotated vertical but doing this also updates the other axes as "level" so rotation is flaky at best with no love in games at all. So if this app reads current values and issues an update we should easly be able to write a simple app that we put our own values into and issue an update. Thus allowing us to invert only a singlw axis and make rotation work perfect.

We've tried swapping every file with yamaha or sensor in it to a froyo build with no luck. It looks like the garray and marray values are somewhere deep inside the kernel rather than a handy library file. If your handy with a hex editor or a soldering iron you would be a hero

I am quite good with a hex editor and an expert with a soldering iron. anyways no one really cares lol so to clarify (sorry was on my device in a vehicle so I did not feel like typing a lot) No it is not stored in a file anywhere on the system (in temp memory while it reads the values before it updates) the values in this chip are stored outside the system (often in the chips software(actual firmware of the hardware) this would explain why when erasing the system and flashing back to stock leaves your rotation messed up even with a kernel reflash. it is in the kernel where the driver interprets these values (that is why in 2.1 it can be patched like in the reorient kernel) obviously the I9000 default settings are 90deg different on one axis then ours. SO my point remains, the recalibration utility works as described above, it calls commands I believe from perhaps one of the yamaha libs, libms3c_yamaha.so? it seems to do it in this order with a couple of other steps involved: it measures the sensor readings then gets the "offset" (I think this is it calculating the offset based on the current values being assumed level) then it saves those values (temp) then it issues the update. As I said before instead of updated ALL of the values as the new "level" we want to update with manually input values to work with single axes. anyone follow? I am going to give it a go tonight and at this time wish myself luck!
btw: I tried to patch the kernel with a hex editor but could never get it to repack correctly and was mostly bootless. next step is to **** my device for good with some micro-soldering (probably not plausible from the way it looks though)
It was a joke. Sir, step away from the iron.
There is an orientation lock so there is some control over the accelerometer however I'm not sure if you can lock only one axis. If it's a .so you are looking for then it ain't stripped so there should be readable text inside.
I would need to reboot to look further but the only real function in yamaha.c is yamaha_read which does what it says on the tin.
ak8973b.c does a bunch of stuff but I'm not sure why it's even in there as I doubt there are two accelerometers http://www.asahi-kasei.co.jp/akm/en/product/ak8973nbs/ak8973nbs.html but it's included with the build.

http://s379.photobucket.com/albums/oo239/vendetta-mr2/Captivate/
If it's a yamaha sensor I don't see it anywhere but then again I don't know which one it is (Thanks Samsung) so I'm not sure what part number to look for.
I think there was a point to all this but I don't remember what it was so quick ask another question, post another comment or just say something witty, I'm sure I'll remember it sooner or later.
hey what ever works for me! besides I can always fall back on the nexus. it's easier than it sounds I'll post what I find out tonight.
BLEH! "permission denied" happen to know if the gui in the froyo build is an apk?
TouchWiz is proprietary Samsung. Eugene373 has managed to remove/work around parts of it in his Frankin-Twiz but I have not messed around with that ROM so I don't know what bits are still in there.
Well that was a big ****ing fail! oh well. Gotta go back to work tomorrow so I guess that's it for me for now. I would say maybe next time but Froyo will be released by then I hope..... I guess I will spend the rest of the evening making sure I have a modem that works in froyo jpk
Ok, I gave it one last go and I got it to do portrait correctly BUT now landscape is upside down....... but it rotates nicely.....

I rather doubt that orientation lock has anything to do with how the accelerometer values are interpreted. It probably just forces the UI to disregard changes in orientation.

[Q] Question for those coming from 4.3" 480x800 screen to GNote

Good day,
I am reposting these questions as a new thread, hoping to get some qualified answers from people who are coming from a phone that had the the specs (or close to) the ones in the subject line.
I am an HD2\WM 6.5.3 user with poor vision, hence my interest in the Galaxy Note.
1) Can someone tell me if the icons and the icon text is smaller or larger on the GNote?
2) Same question when browsing the internet and reading mail BEFORE zooming in?
I often have to squint or occasionally use a monocle to view some of the program screens on my HD2 and am hoping that the increased DPI of the GNote is not going to make things smaller over all, despite the larger screen size.
Clearly I am hoping for all things to appear larger!
3) And a little off topic but one of the best things I liked about the HD2\Opera 9.7 browser was auto text wrap\reflow when one does a pinch to zoom. HTC seems to include this functionality in their Sense UI on Android as they did with WM and I do not think the built in browser on the GNote does this???
I tried Dolphin HD on an Andorid SD build on my HD2 but I could not get auto text wrap to work at all, let alone like it does with WM\HTC\Opera.
4) Also, how viewable is the GNote outdoors, in the shade and in the sun?
I would greatly appreciate any\all details and insights anyone can provide before I drop my cash on what I hope to be the answer to my needs.
Thanks in advance, you lucky people.
Text reflow problem in the browser is the only thing that keeping me from getting the SGN ,I also use HD2 WM 6.5 and the Text reflow is amazing on both Opera 9.7 and 10.
However, although I havnt tried it myself but it looks like that the Opera browser supports it,
On both my wifes and sons Samsung galaxy Tabs text reflow is not supported both in stock or Dolphin Hd browsers.
But on my HD2 when I install the MIUI Android SD ROM I notice that i can reflow the text in the browser.
In this thread you can follow discussion for galaxy S II which is suffering from the same syndrom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062327
Good day to you too.
Just going by straight numbers, a 4.3" screen with 800*480 resolution will have a PPI of 217. On a 5.3" screen at 1280*800 resolution, that number jumps to ~285 PPI. (For comparison's sake, Apple's retina display at 3.5" and 960*640 has a PPI of nearly 330.)
In short, the individual pixels on the GNote are going to be smaller than the pixels on a 4.3" 800*480 device. As such, assuming nothing else in the OS has been changed, everything else will appear to be comparatively smaller (but sharper too).
I know there are pixel density apps in the marketplace which allow you to effectively scale up/down Android across the board to emulate the PPI of your preference. Perhaps you may consider trying that out?
Good luck!
Just going by sight (didn't measure), the icons and text on the Note are about the same size as on the sgs by DEFAULT.
But If you root the device then you can change the screen dpi, which well let you make EVERYTHING (all text and graphics, icons etc) smaller or larger to your liking). App LCD Density Changer from the market does this.
Having spent some time with ICS on my HD2, the native browser reflows text very well. I think it would be safe to say that once the Note recieves its ICS update, as Samsung has promised, browsing should be sweet.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using xda premium
I believe text reflow is Application based. Try different browsers until you find one thats satisfactory. I had a HTC Apache, Fuze, and Tilt2. Opera was my browser of choice on the Fuze and Tilt2. I use Miren on my Note and am more than happy. Dolphin browser is another great one.
As others have stated, Dpi changing apps from the market will more than satisfy your desire for having things bigger and more readable. Just be aware that most stock Samsung Apps are not set to auto re-size with different DPI levels. There are many Launcher and dialer alternatives for free from the market that do auto scale.
I say get the phone. You will be more than happy with it.
To add to the list's of devices that wrap text...the HTC flyer would auto wrap text on the entire page when you zoomed in on the stock browser. Loved it most of the time, other times it got annoying.
From my part I thank you all for the heads up,I have already ordered it couple of hours ago, should recieve it by tomorrow, for sure will be needing more assistance for a full customization,Hopefully you will bear up with us.
The stock browser reflows text fine after i ticked the auto fit pages option in settings.

I've seen too many posts of people complaining of something that is optional. Just go into settings and explore all the possibilities, many things can be changed.

I never got to manage automatic text reflow on the samsung stock browsers after froyo (checked every option combination I could think of ) but Opera definitely does this on the Note just zoom in and the text of an article you are reading reflows which is a delight.

Ok mr. Claude,I just got my G Note, one amazing piece of trchnology, first thing I did is to check up the text reflow in the stock browser which didnt work, however after installing the all too familiar Opera Mobile everything is superb.
I recommend you get it.One nice surprise was that it supported the Armenian language OTB in addition to a couple of more which I read.
By the way I am typing from the GN right now with the Opera without enabling auotocorrection and its super fast.
I wanted to thank the people who have replied about this as it helps me and I am sure, others.
I would still like to hear from users of the GNote as to out-of-box icon\text and default text size when in email app, etc. compared to icon\text size when on a 4.3" screen that has 800x480.
And I am sure I will be buyng this bad boy once we get a clearer indication if AT&T here in the USA w/b coming out with an LTE version of the GNote soon or not. (read that as not soon enough but I am willing to wait till Q1 of 2012 if AT&T does end up selling the LTE version).
Again my thanks to those who have responded thus far.
Ok here wr go,in the email application the headers on the HD2 can be pinched to zoom while on the GNote cannont, meanwhile on the GNote Hotmail the pinch to zoom works very well together with the text reflow,I was able to zoom in the email massage till there was just one word on each line!!.But the Gmail doesnt seem to support zoom nor did I find a way to enlarge the fonts, but than again my main email is the hotmail.
Regarding the Icons they are smaller than the HD2 but the text is a bit larger.
However there is one thing that the GNote excells in is the Keyboard, the HD2 Keyboard is a complete crap, thats why I preffered the Swype.
My advice,if it is just for reading webpages and email HD2 is not much worst than the GNote, but for everthing else it is completly different experience.
Dang your still using WinMo?! There are many Android ROMS for HD2 that have text reflow working. Anyway I just got my Note a couple days ago and I was an HD2 user myself for over a year. Great phone. I was also worried the higher res on the Note would make everything look smaller. But in fact it looks pretty close to the same. Higher res + bigger screen = about same appearance for text. Everything else though is MUCH better. AND you get more text on the screen. Obviously. Would I recommend it to you, someone VERY concerned about reading text? Not sure. AMOLED does provide better contrast. You would basically be getting a device that would show you more text not necessarily larger.
I will say this. I'm an ergonomic freak. I loved the HD2's design. Perfect fit in hand, good amount of rubberization on edges, quality materials and REAL buttons and a FRONT power button. I can't stand devices that put the power button WAY up top. Especially as these phones get larger it gets really clumsy to reach for that button every time. When/if ATT does get the Note you can be assured they will remove the front home physical button. Actually there is a pic of it without the button. http://pocketnow.com/android/samsung-preparing-galaxy-note-hardware-for-us-release-image . The power button on the Note is VERY high up on the right hand side. VERY hard to reach on a large device when trying to hold with one hand(which is possible). So without being able to wake the device with the front physical home button this is the only option. I personally wouldn't want anything to do with the ATT version and am glad I purchased the international version for this reason alone.

[Q] Stock dialer with character prediction

As you might have seen, if you use English version, you can use dialer prediction on the Stock Sony's dialer..
For example if you type "323" it will find "dad" or if you hit "666" it will show "mom".. Its a common thing.. nothing's new..
But for some reasons it doesn't work in other languages.. (at least in my native language - Hebrew)..
It simply not follow any letter.. just numbers .. if I hit few numbers like 123 if will show only phone numbers holding this part inside of the whole number like 052-4512399.. but no characters for names..
Is there any patch or mod or hacked version to enable this? for root / odex/ deodex.. what ever.. I'll change my phone according to it..
I'm using external dialer (tried few types) but they all sucks... they are way slower and laggish than the flow and smooth stock one..
And none of them is elegant as the stock..
Thanks ahead for your help !
Jordan.
Is there anybody out there?
