I'm only just beginning to test, but a new app seems to have been released:
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.watto.program.android.sync.facebook&feature=search_result
Figured it might be useful to those that want to see contact details (not just the pictures).
So far the app seems to work perfectly with only one exception... it sync's the birthday info as "Event" in the contact account instead of "Birthday".
The issue with that is that apps/widgets that track/display birthdays don't pick it up properly.
I sent an email to the dev, new app so may be something he will quickly fix. If not, the source code is actually available on his site, which is nice.
Yeah, I'm using it now, it's working well the only thing is... to keep the pictures synced completely you need to "join" contacts with the Facebook contact being the primary contact. Which usually means that my contacts all have stupid names because I have stupid friends.
So I'm using Sync my pics as well.

Dev has already uploaded a fixed version for the Events/Birthday issue and emailed me about it.
Super responsive and is still working perfectly.
Warning. This app eats battery life. It doesn't close. I'd much rather run syncmypix every couple days then have this running constantly, it was at 26%!

Hrm, sure you're talking about the right app? This sets up a sync service, there isn't a standalone app or anything. It syncs my data and then doesn't do anything for 24 hours (you can pick the frequency).
Anyway, no such issue on my device at least.
That hasn't been my experience. Set it to sync less often

Quite a few of you have asked me about the Facebook not syncing with 2.3.4 since Google decided to make it a no-no...Below is a link to a compiled .apk file that, hopefully, fixes the syncing problem.
*ContactsProvider.apk* TESTING ONLY and not responsible if something bad happens!! What I can say is that I have been running this on my phone with no problems but since I don't use Facebook..maybe someone else can let me know.
- Lastly, do NOT sign the .apk
- push to /system/app

SyncMyPix works well
I can't wait to see it working on my Xoom. I really hope your solution will be universal.
Also, I cannot test on my Nexus S, as CM7 has already the sync working.
So, is this a working solution?
I just picked up a NS4G and would love to get this working.
same here. as a matter of fact, why did google decide to go against this?

They wanted the data to be synced to the contact so that it would be on Google's servers... i.e. their picture is uploaded to the server, and no longer requires Facebook sync for the data.
Yes those are the rules for using Google's contact API. The philosophy is that the user should be able to export and have control over data his contacts have shared with him. Facebook wants all that data to stay in the Facebook system. They do not want to allow you to export or own or have control of your friends contact info outside of Facebook.
The rule has always been there and Facebook has always violated it. This is Google's way of letting them know they are not happy about it even though they continue to let it slide on pretty much all other devices.

I've been using an apk called syncmypix and it works wonders..

It sync's the pix, there are dozents of tools like that...we need a data sync tool which sync's fb data, not only pics, with the phone contacts...
I've been using Contapps (also on the Android Market) to get around this issue.
Works great.
Actually, Contapps is a good app and can sync with social networks, including Facebook.

Maybe someone clever enough should just have a look into Cm7 source code or just ask the team. They have the answer and I am sure they are willing to share.

The Facebook app package name just needs to be added to the various unrestricted packages lists. Then its free to do whatever with your data, ignoring Google's restrictions.
I will try and find out exactly which parts of code it requires changed some time this week, I believe its XML only.

Or....
Go here: http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/10/synchronizing-google-and-facebook.html.
Install on your PC. Run. Log in. Boom, synced.
Thanks to Koush.
That's not the same thing as what the Facebook app does. Koush's app just takes the photo from Facebook and updates the photo in your Google Contact entry for the person. That photo is then permanent until you manually remove it on the Google Contacts website.
The Facebook app only stores the photo in the person's contact on your phone, but not in the actual Google contact entry. The advantage of this is that if you remove Facebook, the pics go away as well. It keeps Facebook and Google Contacts separate. This is how Twitter, Last.FM, Qik, et al do it.

I know. I like that better. I did not like syncing photos, then I log into Gmail Contacts and all the photos were gone. I like to have the photos in Gmail too.
But my post really was in reply to another user who suggested another 3rd party app to sync the pictures. I meant to quote his post but I did not.

Gotcha, thanks. Afaik, CM and some other chefs have the requisite info to bypass goog's restrictions and allow syncing. Maybe we can reach out to them and they'll be kind enough to share the solution?
What's the best way to have facebook sync? A custom ROM or something like HaxSync?
I tried flashing "flavours" from Matthew Huie (super_paws around there) that incorporates the "hidden" Facebook Sync but I didn't achieve anything (no contacts were sync'd, I don't know why, but gah... ).
I used for a while an app called SyncMyPix, only good for syncing contact photos (not rly good, tbh... the images were pixelated and sometimes not very useful).
So, last week I installed HaxSync that IS rly a beast: contact (both photos and status) infos are synced in a veeeeeeeery good manner and it does everything automatically. I think that with a few bucks you get a goooood app for the stock ROM. (it works on any rom ofc, but others may have a sync option enabled yet...)
my 2 cents
Where do you find hack sync? I've never heard of it. But I want to check if out.

Good afternoon XDA!
Having received my N7 yesterday, I didn't get to play with it too much until later on at night. One of the first things I noticed was that the Facebook app on the device is missing many of the main features. I'm not sure if it's a JellyBean issue (as my Galaxy Nexus is CDMA and I haven't modded it to JB yet) or a N7 issue, but there's no way to see someone's Pictures, Info, or Favorites. What I mean is that if you go to someone's profile the only thing visible is their Wall. There's no way to go into the other sections of someone's profile. The only way to see their pictures is if they post them on their walls.
Anyone else notice this? For those that have, if you also have JellyBean on another device does it do it there, as well? I just have no way of knowing if this is a JB issue or a device-specific issue. I can't seem to find any other complaints, which I'm a bit confused by...I understand that this device is extremely new, but a *vast* majority of Android users also spend quite a bit of time on Facebook, so I'd be surprised if nobody had run into this issue before me (or at least made comments on it).
Post thoughts and maybe we can narrow it down!
I'm seeing the same issue. I've heard good things about Friendcaster as a superior replacement so I'd try that.
Friendcaster is a good alternative and in many ways superior to the Facebook app - you can have multiple log ins/accounts and much more responsive than facebook

I have both the Galaxy Nexus on JB and the N7, I can definitely confirm that the FB app is lacking on the N7 especially when going into peoples profiles. However on the Galaxy Nexus it has every single feature that it had on GB and ICS. No idea what the deal is with the N7 version of the app.
Facebook app isn't set up for tablets on JB as far as I'm aware. Give them a bit to update the app and we will see.
No your wrong, its not the fact its a tablet on jelly bean, its the fact its a tablet.

The Facebook app is terribad on every platform, and every form factor. Just don't bother using it.
im not sure if a thread has been made on how to do this. but i finally figure out how to get all my facebook birthdays to sync into my google calendar. i followed what they said here on this web page http://mashable.com/2012/02/21/export-facebook-birthdays/ it works good and its a nice little slide show, so it should be noob proof. lol. anyways i just wanted to share my findings just encase someone is trying to figure out how to do this. it also synced all the holidays to my google calender as well. i posted a few pics to prove it. even though i wouldnt waste my time lying about some like this. lol

I've tried 20 apps and I don't really like most of them.
What are ppl using?
I honestly liked the old 4.1 stock app and want something similar.
I want manual sync, but I want the app to auto sync upon opening, which surprisingly none of them do. I know u just have to pull down to sync, but hey, one less step, is one less step.
I also am having trouble finding an app where u can easily delete from the app. I think I'm deleting emails throughout the day, only to find them all still there when I go to hotmail on my computer.
When I hit delete, I want it to delete, not go to trash so I have to open an entirely different folder and delete that for it to really be gone.
I'm just going to keep trying them, but if you guys have any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.
