[Q] Replacing my Hero/ Currently on CM7 - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am looking to get my Hero replaced through the Sprint insurance at this point...
Currently it is running AOSP CMOD 2.3.4 - 20110523
My question is, would using this RUU
http://www.htc.com/us/support/hero-sprint/downloads/
take me back to stock in order to continue with this process?
Does the current version of Android matter in this regards?
Thanks in advance...

Look for the ruu in zip format in the dev section. Run that and it take you back to stock.

Quick Question / Verification

So im rooted and have done backup, also installed Fresh Rom 1.1
Now the question that i have is, if i ever needed to go back to a stock Hero ROM...all i would have to do is apply RUU?
Also inorder to receive any kinda updates in the hopefully near future from Sprint or HTC i would need have stock ROM running?
Thanks in advance

RUU does take you back to an unrooted stock phone.
Also, if you do want to get sprint updates you would need to RUU it back. Chances are however that if you get a Sprint update, our current Root will be patched, therefor you won't be able to run a ROM until someone finds a new root method. Which will more than likely be more difficult to find than the first root exploit was...kind of a Murphy's law thing.
XDA will likely have an update just as good or better out by the time Sprint does release theirs. Definitely will have the same update out for root users within 24 hours. At least historically.
O good, thanks for the verification... just making search... then i will await the communties update

[Q] Questions about 2.2 Froyo on Hero CDMA

Is Cyanogenmod the only Froyo option for the CDMA Hero? I'm thinking of upgrading from the Sprint 2.1 firmware. I have several questions:
Really Important:
Can I downgrade to the original Sprint 2.1 firmware without breaking anything? I really don't want an expensive phone-shaped paperweight if anything goes wrong.
Can I keep the HTC sense UI (I only want the main menu dialer anyway)? I saw that thread saying Sense 2.2 is about 85% done.
Somewhat Important:
Can I install the wifi tethering app on 2.2 Cyanogenmod?
Does Sprint notice if you tether and cut you off?
Do I have to root my phone?
Isn't giving root to potentially malicious apps a bad idea?
Is giving root on a per-request basis?
Can I remove the stupid Sprint boot animation?

You are already on stock firmware. Do you mean if you go to CM6 can you go back to the stock firmware of 2.1?
Can I keep the HTC sense UI (I only want the main menu dialer anyway)? I saw that thread saying Sense 2.2 is about 85% done? the Froyo rom yo usaw is the wildfire port and its in major alpha form right now. There is no fully operational Froyo sense rom for the hero yet
Somewhat Important:
Can I install the wifi tethering app on 2.2 Cyanogenmod? YES im using it right now
Does Sprint notice if you tether and cut you off? NO there is no way for them to see yo u have root and are using it
Do I have to root my phone? YES in order to go to CM6 or any custom rom you need to. ALong with wireless teething
Isn't giving root to potentially malicious apps a bad idea? Of course there is always a risk for anything. Thats why you nandroid before installing anything or before making setting changes.
Is giving root on a per-request basis? YES..superuser will pop up asking for request for any app that asks for request..you can allow or deny
Can I remove the stupid Sprint boot animation?YES, Cyanogenmod CM6 removes the sprint boot logo with e android cyanogen mod one.

And you can All you'd have to do is RUU
If all you want from Sense is the dialer, there is always Dialer One on the Market. I have been running more AOSP-based ROMs than I ever really ran Sense, so when I finally got bored with the stock dialer and gave it a shot, I didn't even notice it was supposed to replicate the Sense dialer, ha. It's a hell of a lot more customizable, and I think it's much "cleaner" looking overall (especially if you have it set to hide the green dial button in the contact list, and NOT have the keypad when the dialer is open by default, and taking up at least half the screen).
That Wildfire port is old. This is the current ongoing 2.2 Sense port, if you're into that sort of thing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834840
Okay, that was exactly what I needed to know, thank you. After reviewing the various pages, are these the correct steps to get 2.2 Cyanogenmod up and running?
Root phone
Backup apps/SMS, etc.
Backup using nandroid
Revert to the 2.1 .5 (NOT .6 or .7) firmware
Flash Cyanogenmod
Restore app/SMS backups
Install GApps, Sprint Apps, Sense port (as needed)
hello the only question i have is about the froyo 2.2. i Installed CyanogenMod-6.1.0-RC1 on my hero 200 and its running great only problem i found that i have is i have no flash support on my browser. what should i download to get my browser back in running order as far as going to most of the sites i used to that had a flash media player embeded? Yes, the Hero really can't install full Flash 10.1 because the default specs just won't handle Flash. Supposedly its possible with some overclocking and/or JIT enabled, but even then most ppl say it's not perfect.
We can install a Flash Lite plugin to browsers....try searching for that either on the market or through Google.

Threadjackers.
I still have the same phone, a year later, and I would love an answer... However, I updated to build
Code:
2.31.651.7 CL258838 release-keys
and baseband
Code:
2.42.01.04.27
Can I use the RUU method and root or would I have to completely reset to Sprint's 2.1 and lose everything? Thanks for putting up with my questions.

You can root with .7. I used Regaw's last time I did after an ruu to .7 build. There are great Gingerbread roms now. Aosp flavored like Jaybob's Rom which has the newest .35 kernel baked in; cm7 has begun using that kernel in their builds as well ( although it might not be the newest yet). You can download titanium backup to back up apps and data (sms too). Just follow the directions in the op of whatever Rom you are looking to install.

It worked! That was nice and painless, just don't have your Hero plugged into a USB hub with a dodgy cord like I did. I'm going to go and disable OTA updates as described in the old tutorial. Should I install Cyanogenmod or aosp? It looks like some of the Hero wiki links are pretty dated now, and the only aosp 2.3 link is to a 2.3 aosp labeled unstable and the thread mentioning that the dev quit working on it. I'd love a recommendation on how to get a stable 2.3 install running, I mostly want Exchange sync and tethering.
Id reccomend jaybob rom or kush I'd say jaybob since he still does update from time to time both r still awesome

[Q] Root and "unbrand" my Wildfire for stock HTC ROM?

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to Android really, a few months back I bought a G1 to dabble with it, but through some conflicting information and me screwing it up basically - I bricked it.
Now, I've upgraded my contract to a Wildfire, with 3 UK. It's a branded device, with their logo on boot, and Planet 3 app etc..
I've had a fiddle with the basic stuff, finding my way around and that, but I'd like to gradually take it further.
For now, I don't need the latest and greatest, so I don't want to go down the way of custom ROMs etc.
What I do want, is to have it think it's a generic HTC Wildfire, no network brandings, so that when HTC rolls out a release (As they have 2.2 this week) I can get it then, but I don't need to flash myself with CyanogenMod or whatever.
I wondered if it is possible to do this by removing the CID somehow?
Basically, I'm a noob, and I don't know if it's possible or not, but I pretty much want to just stop my phone thinking it's 3 branded, and get a stock HTC ROM on there, so that I can update it OTA as and when HTC roll them out.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT:
I have read about GoldCards, I know that they allow you to flash a ROM different from what your CID allows by bypassing it - but I'm not really sure if that's what I describe above or not. If I created a GoldCard, and flashed a stock HTC ROM via it, would I then be able to update it to 2.2, and further in the future OTA just as if I'd bought an unlocked device?
Quick update,
I've created a GoldCard successfully, and have rooted and installed CWMod recovery, and made nandroid backup.
Can I put any ROM on, such as this HTC stock "Buzz" one, or might it not work because of different radio/SPL or something?
Not sure if the one I use will have to be Wildfire specific, or radio specific or whatever?

[Q] HTC Hero downgrade

I previously had the hero rooted to Android 2.2 and now have a new phone. Now here comes the funny part...my mother wants my hero since I don't use it anymore. So I was wondering how I could put back the sprint's official 2.1 release because the phone being rooted won't let the "sprint guys" change phone numbers for my mom lol. Thanks in advance!
try to find a stock rom or i'm not sure if fresh lets you do it.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849024&highlight=stock+ruu
i guess try this one.....
you could flash liquid sense or any sense rom (other than froyo sense) to activate, if you want to get rid of root all together go here and get the RUU for the 2.1 update and flash that from the bootloader

Go to sprints website HERE to download the RUU
Run it, go through the steps and it will return your phone completely back to 2.1 stock
nvm I was beaten to it

Let's play pretend

Bad boyz current rom
Updated firmware
Super CID
Rooted (obviously)
S-off
adb reboot-works
adb reboot recovery-works
adb reboot bootloader-works
Fastboot reboot- works
fastboot oem rebootRUU- works
RUU-no worky, says usb device not attached even with current htc drivers
Google unable to connect to server after wipe cuz i turned blinkfeed back on and had to push OK a gizzilian times due top FC and did factory reset.
I can go to dropbox thru browser and install app backup/restore and than restore all apps, but it still fails to connect to google servers as i input info from new device (custom rom) and want to start fresh. I dont care if it wipes internal storage (learned long ago how to keep nothing on device that can't be restored off device)
Yes i wiped everything twice (except system and storage, been there done that nightmare)
So.... Bone stock (any version) rom that can be flashed in recovery......
Barebones back to stock is going to require an RUU. Did you make a nandroid of stock before you rooted the phone or is that how you got it?
If you're looking for rooted stock for most recent 5.03.651.3 rom, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2766604

Nope, i'm looking for 100 persent stock RUU bone stock RUU flasable in recovery.
I'm going to go back to roots (and i don't mean ROOTED)
Let's say htc evo. You could take the RUU and extract it in rar, now adays it would be 7zip, take the rom and name it to pmg.3400(example) and put it on sd card, then flash it in bootloader. That no longer exists. I have the vary first bone stock htc one sprint rom, and have extracted rom.zip from it, and it wont flash from recovery. I need to.
Looking for old timers who know what to do with this. I don't want rooted version that will flash in recovery, i have that already and fighting to pull stock OTA update out of it to flash in recovery. There has to be someone here that has had the 1st edition sprint android (hero, or evo 1st edition) that knows what i'm talking about.
Yeah, that's the unfortunate side effect of these phones and no longer have an SD slot. And believe me, I remember the Supersonic days. OG EVO was my first HTC device. EVO LTE after the fact and now this phone. Tinkered with other HTC models for other folks as well.
There is an offchance that having SuperCID not matching for Sprint could be a culprit too. I was checking out a few threads about that after I read your reply. As far as some help from someone that is savvy with the M7... BD619 knows his stuff. PM him.
