Is there a way to easily toggle 2g/3g??
I get about 2% of jack for service in my house, unless I'm on 2g. I would love an easy toggle.
Is there a way, without having to use CM7?

Smith
Settings> wireless and network> mobile networks> network mode
Gsm=2g
Wcdma=3g
Easy way to get there is use 2g/3g toggle by Curvefish on the market.
Thank you to both of you. I was aware of the 'long' way through settings, but I wasn't aware of curvefish. I'll give it a shot!

Actually, 2G/3G toggles don't work on Cappy. You have to DISABLE data first and then you can switch, it won't automatically switch to 2g without turning data completely off first and then reenabling it with 2g..
now thats just a hassle

I dont have a data plan so when it switches, all my data applications (helloaim, etc) go dead. Is there any app on the g1 that keeps the wifi radio on? I know the iphone has something like this
thanks
I know this is cliche and annoying but that's an option in the cupcake build I tried.
just turn the screen time-out to Never, so it never goes into sleep mode. i know this isn't very practicle and quite battery-consuming, but i can't think of anything else that would work.
you tryed APNDroid from the market? Its a Programm to toggle G3/Edge/Gprs Connection - so it's not automatically switching, but only a click
I think this might be what you are looking for.

Keep WiFi
Annoyed by observing your WiFi connection switches with 2G/3G when your cell phone takes its pause?
This service will keep your Wifi connection on air, even if your phone's screen goes off.
This service does not influence your normal WiFi enable/disable behaviour.

There is an app in the market called Wifi Lock that does what you are looking for and its free.
I am going to be on a long flight and i would look to just use WiFi. The search for network burns the battery. Any suggestions?

just turn off the wifi options on settings or use the power bar widget
Yeah, I think there's a way to enable wifi and still be in "airplane mode." I remember finding a bug where I did it before with Bluetooth since I had wireless bluetooth headphones and I was flying from Louisville to Anaheim.
Try turning on Airplane mode and then using a widget to enable Wifi. It might work, but I'm not 100% sure how I did it with bluetooth.
Samsungs Android just comes with very hand functions: to stop wifi, to stop bluetooth, GSP or even to stop all radio connections via flight mode. But here's one they missed: Stopping ONLY GSM/WCDMA completely. I must say I have good WCDMA dataplans, but, when I am browsing via Wifi, why consume battery with the network? Since the phone is running vrey well via SIP, I have no reason to consume battery on GSM/WCDMA networks.
And don't you mind being unreachable if someone tries to call you?
I don't know if it's a bug or intended, but when I enable Wi-Fi AFTER enabling flight mode, I connect to Wi-Fi while flight mode continues to block all other radios.
Get APN onoff from CurveFish. It will shut off just carrier data, leaving you able to send and receive calls and texts.

It's a feature i used to use it some times, on all my Android devices it worked that way
with froyo u can disable data connection without an extra app
just press and hold for few seconds the off button and switch data off...

No, you don't understand, it's about disabling the whole carrier stuff. I receiva calls via VOIP, my carrier doesn't even have voice an that SIM.
D'uh, maybe I should make my text red so people would read it more carefully.
Well perhaps you need to calm down and not act so rudely to the people trying to help you. There is also a simple explanation for this. The GSM/WCDMA modes are essential to be kept on if any sort of data connection is required. Obviously, not if you don't require the HSPDA or 3G connection, you may enable flight mode and turn on wifi manually. This has also been mentioned above.
In the way you have stated it, perhaps you should attempt reading all of the replies.
Dial *#*#4636#*#* -> Choose "Phone information" -> Scroll down and there is a button to turn off the radio.

thank you!
@litobro, I am pleased that there are people trying to help, but repeating the same information over and over again just makes me feel, well.. bad!
@NetCopAD, thank you very much, that is the solution, wouldn't have thought!
@Adevem, you are right. But I searched over the internet for over 2 days and, well, I thought there is no easy answer. It really makes me feel a little dumb, but noone knows everything.
But, maybe, just maybe, it we kindly ask a mod, he would move this thread where it should be, if this is not the right section.
I am already thinking at an app that could switch automatically between Wifi and WCDMA. That's because I either need wifi or WCDMA. Switching automatically to WCDMA if there's no wifi (lost signal) would be great and would save battery.
So, if wifi signal falls below -xx dbm it would stop wifi and enable radio. We would only have to monitor rssi.
Have you tried the airplane mode and then enabling wifi?

Anyway, using the service code is a better option. Although an application that automates everything would be great.
Checkingt here http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/wifi/WifiManager.html
and here http://developer.android.com/reference/android/telephony/ServiceState.html#STATE_POWER_OFF
seems to provide the basics for an app that just comutes between wifi and carrier radio.
The app JuiceDefender might be helpfull.

How do I retain the chosen settings in this screen. For example, I would like to retain the option of only WCDMA.

You can choose WCDMA only, in the standard settings menu of the phone. Look for mobile network settings.

That's the thing, how do I specifically select WCDMA? In the secret service menu, there is no "okay" button to retain your selected choices. "home button" doesn't work, rocker buttons don't work etc.
It's not in the secret menu. It's in the standard menu for mobile network settings.
Wireless and network -> Mobile network settings -> Network mode -> WCDMA only

That's the thing, I don't have that path on my i9000M. That's why I'm wondering how to retain this via the secret menu.
Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone knows if when I connect to the internet using a WIFI connection (whether its one I own or a public one)...does that count as "data usage" on my bill?
The reason I ask is because I'm on tmobile and a most of you probably already know, they lowered the cap to 5gbs of data a month and after you go past that limit you'll still have data connection but it'll be super slow (most likely EDGE speeds) until your new billing cycle begins. I'm currently at 4.8gbs already (watching youtube videos, using the internet, xda, etc) so I want to know if I can use an open WIFI connection without worrying about going past 5gbs.
Thanks.
no it wont count as data usage.

make sure you go to Wifi advance settings and select "Wifi sleep policy" accordingly (I suggest to put it on "Never")
If you don't do so, Android will turn off Wifi and switch to mobile data when your screen is off or not plugged in.

Thank you, I'll make sure I do that then.
note that the wifi sleep policy will only work if you are running FRG83 (2.2.1) unless you are VERY lucky to not experience the bug on 2.2
edit: nvm just saw you're running CM 6.1 ^^
mobile data
also if you really want to not use any of your mobile data you can go to settings>wireless and networks>mobile network settings and turn off data, then you will only use data over wifi and won't use any more data

I always hate going into the settings to enable/disable data. Is there a widget in the market that does that?
Good question.
How would a 3G switch function differently than enabling Airplane mode?
Curious as well...

Kinda but no. Switchpro widget has both airplane and 3g on/off switches. As of right now only the airplane part works.

So what is the difference between Airplane mode and turning off 3G?
I am pretty sure airplane mode kills wifi and bluetooth as well, thou you can turn wifi back on.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
I use Widgetoid (think thats it). Turn on Airplane mode and you're all good. Just need to switch back on WiFi.

There is no officially supported way to disable 3G besides Airplane Mode. Airplane Mode disables the 3G radio, while widgets just change the APN to something that doesn't work.

Airplane mode disables all of the radios, and you have to re-enable them each time you power the device on.

I've noticed that unchecking that doesn't actually power down the 3G radio. It will still show up in the power monitor under settings. I'm aslo curious if there is a way without using airplane mode to have the tablet not bug about activation every time it starts up.
Thank you!

True, but I meant from a programming standpoint, so a widget could do it. Maybe it's been added in the 3.0 SDK but I haven't heard about it. I know google took out the ability to turn on and off the 3G with a program because it can cost users money.
