EDIT: No data
I'm using a milestone on ACS Alaska.
I was able to root by sideloading Z4root through Sideload Wonder Machine. Root went just fine, downloaded CWM, flashed an alternate recovery, and then tried to flash CM7.
The error I ran into:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(No such file or directory)
E:Can't mount /sdcard
I made a nandroid backup before hand, but now I obviously can't restore it...
Any ideas?? I really need this thing to work. Did I go about flashing Cm7 the wrong way? Thanks in advance.
I'll keep updating this thread. Even if nobody helps, maybe it'll help someone else in the long run if I discover something.
So after the last fiasco with the SD card not able to mount, a reboot just restored everything to default, meaning that the OS itself wasn't actually wiped (as it should have been). I lost all my apps, but I still had root. I reinstalled Rom Manager, flashed the newest recovery (rather than the alternate) and attempted to install CM7 again.
This time, I have a "status 7" during the flash. The SD card mounted just fine, but because of that error, the installation completely aborts.
Other info:
I am not able to flash an SBF using RSD lite because I get an error 1337 510B every single time. (this is on multiple computers, multiple USB cables etc). Gave it a solid 4 attempts, one of those attempts being on another person's milestone, just to make sure I didn't have a lemon. Is there a different SBF file I should use? I was using "vulnerable_recovery_only)RAMDLD90_78.sbf"
I am also not able to update to 2.2. I have used the motorola updater on 2 separate computers, and both say that my current device is up to date.
Model number: A854
Firmware version: 2.1-update 1
Baseband version: C_01.07.00R
Kernel version: 2.6.29-omap1 ([email protected] #1)
Build number: MILER_X1_00.26.1
First, the vulnerable recovery is for the milestone which is A853, not the A854, which is basically the droid1. So VR aint going to work on your phone.
You have to use ROM Manager to install your CM7. If you have the premium version, RM will basically do everything for you, download cwm recovery, download the latest cm7 and google apps, ask you if you want to wipe data and install the rom for you.
There is no stock 2.2 update for Milestone A854 AFAIK.
Btw, raise the bounty to 50.

I've done everything in CWM / RM so that won't be a problem.
So are you saying I essentially have a droid? (as far as rom / sbf compatibility?) it was definitely branded as a milestone by the ACS carrier. Which sbf should I try?
And yeah. Depending on how frustrated I get it might go up hahaha...

Yes. Your phone is basically a droid. The milestone A854 is a droid. You are using a CDMA network, not GSM if i am correct.
This might help regarding your doubt of your phone being a droid.
Regarding sbf, try this link.
A word of caution. The sbf mentioned in the link above is a generic sbf, meaning you will lose your radio files and probably 3g. So back up your radio files first before flashing. They should be available in your /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default folder.
People who owned Alltel milestones and flashed the above got their phone to work, but could not get 3G working.
Edited, silesh is already helping you out, you are in good hands.

You have to flash the vulnerable recovery in order to be able to apply the update.zip
here it is:

Hey guys got some questions down the same line of thought. I have a milestone and a hero. On the hero I installed rom manager from the market and downloaded a few roms and then transfered them to the sd card and loaded them with the rom manager. And it works. But when I tried that with the milestone I get the same error. I can not figure out what I am doing wrong!!! I am on cellular south network and wonder if that is the problem but I dont think so. Can you load roms through the rom manager on the milestone? Thanks in advance I am still learning.!
Well, CDMA Milestone is a tricky question. It should be exactly same as Droid except the name, the question is if you rooted the phone ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7902606&postcount=4
You simply have to work as if you have a Droid, not Milestone - as your phone is equal to Droid and very different to Milestone sold in other countries.
hey the milestone is from telus canada unlocked to use it for GSM fido, but the other issue is that its not the same as Droid because for i.e droid you need 2 press "x"a nd power button to go into recovery meny, for milestone you need to press camera key and power button to go into that recovery... also how would i go about flashing the vulnerable recovery??

1. Install your motorolla drivers
2. Install rsd lite
3. Get the vuln recovery from the link I posted above and extract it
4. Turn off your phone
5. Boot into the bootloader (Power Button + Dpad Up)
6. Connect your phone to computer via usb
7. Start Rsd Lite
8. Flash the vulnerable recovery sbf file

Yeah, i was answering to "J W". Even if you both have Motorola Milestone, J W's Milestone is a Droid with different name, your Milestone is a true Milestone. That's why i redirected J W to the Droid way .

my file is named update.zip (not .zip.zip but just .zip) and its not working!! really frustrating
Follow this guide exactly (make sure you download the correct NON-service vulnerability SBF for your region): http://android.modaco.com/content/m...m/308422/milestone-2-1-update-and-root-guide/
The instructions are pretty much the same as what Vlad has been saying, but they are a lot more detailed and outline some of the same problems that many of us international Milestone users have experienced with rooting.
Hey guys i did this and all this managed to do is reset my phone to factory settings.. i still cant update to 2.2 i flashed it and everything im getting same errors!!!
Once you root it, and make sure that you root it correctly like here: http://android.modaco.com/content/m...m/308422/milestone-2-1-update-and-root-guide/
Use the ADB recovery method to flash the image. Don't just update, but do a recovery of your custom ROM.
dude i dont know how to flash it i dont know how to make nandroid its so complex
Follow the guide above. Once that is accomplished, watch this video:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/29/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-motorola-milestone-using-nandroid/
Make sure that you actually have root access first before trying to load a custom ROM. Check if you have root access by downloading Titanium from the Market.
It took me several hours - had to repeat the initial root about 4 times to get it right - but it works for sure.
dude wow worked : D but my question is now, i only could upgrade to 2.2.1 GOT one. Is it because Telus Milestone is locked bootloader or something and wont let me flash, i tried to flash to motofrenzy but it would install and get stuck on boot at teh Droid and the eye thing :S
Also is milestone capable on running on WIND 3G, what if i installed European SBF??
btw thanks so much, does this forum have a "rep" system?
You can't flash the radio frequencies because the hardware just isn't there. I have an international 900/2100 version, so do you want to trade?
All of the Milestone ROMs on here work, even the Moto Frenzy one, but you have to do a recovery instead of a clean flash like the GOT version. Personally, I'm loving the GOT ROM. It seems to give better battery life than the others that I've tried and is pretty fast.
i tried to flash it like the links you gave me and it just gets stuck on start up (usually the Android thing, but MotoFrenzy gets stuck on the droid Eye, and dont get me wrong i liek the GOT but i dont know how to apply the fixes )
Applying the fixes is easy. Just install the ROM again. This time, reboot the phone again after it auto-reboots when the installation finishes.
Now, upon 2nd reboot, you should get the "Welcome to Milestone" screen. Reboot into recovery and go into the GOT update and apply the root, then the fixes.
My Moto Frenzy installation only worked after I rebooted the phone several times. It can take a few minutes to get past the Droid eye logo.

huhuhuh... when is official Froyo reaching Milestone!!..

Hi there!
Recently I've been trying to upgrade my SGS with a custom ROM, Darky's 4.0. After installing the ROM as instructed (using CWM and copying the ROM to the internal SD card), the ROM Installs, after the 1st boot it keeps looping, see video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWrijyv-8PM (not edited, sorry for that)
Original SGS:
GT-I9000T
I9000TUBJG7
Product code: GT-I9000HKTPCW
kernel: 2.6.28
Build: eclair.ubjg5
The first upgrade I made was via Kies reg-hack to: GT-I9000HKDXEU, 'I9000XXJF3/I9000OXAJF3/I9000XXJF3/I9000XXJF3, and it installed Stock Froyo update. The SGS worked fine with exception of the radio, which didn't lock my 3G over the 850 band.
Currently:
9000M running STOCK Australian I9000UGJG8 (due to radio issues, besides the Canadian ROM, this is pretty much the only ROM which modem.bin's works properly with my network, 3G 850MHz).
FW:2.1-update1
Kernel 2.3.29 [email protected] #2
Eclair.UGJG8
I tried with the following STOCK ROMs prior to the custom ROM install: I9000XWJM1, I9000XWJG5, I9000XWJM9 and I9000UGJH2.
I have ALLWAYS made an SD unmount and format, formatted the cache and factory reset. After it loops, the only way to get it back is using downloader mode and installing a STOCK ROM via ODIN (always do a .512 pit repartition)
Any suggestions to make this SGS get the ROM? maybe the kernel is bad?
Cheers!
Have u tried to format everything (exept for sd) and flash again?
Btw i love infected

Format everything? Using which app or program?
I've always used the recovery's wipe commands and the *2767*3855# command. Is that enough? or am I missing another cooler and invasive method ? A friend has suggested to use davlik.
Yeah! Infected rulz, that's what I listen when I'm in the bricking-mood lol
As i saw you have cwm installed... Boot in recovery and select mount and storrage and then select eveeything that contains format (boot wont work to format) and dont select format internal sd but DO select format sd-ext
Edit: if it doesnt work write again then ill upload u the kernel that fixed it for me yesterday. Its from this forum but since ive discovered it by coinsidence, i cant remember how its called. U can format everything then select mout usb storrage (in cwm) and push it on the root of sd. Its an update.zip

I gave that a shot, still no cigar. I guess that it goes deeper than just a formatting... maybe that secret kernel u have might brick me... erhm! I mean help me
Shoot! and I'll try it.... this OEM sucky ROM aint working that good over the Australian ROM lol. now I lost access to my cam ! sucks.
Thanx!
Try any universal lagfix kernel with clockwork enabled. Since ur phone is still flashable and ur phone still has funktionality (cwm works) im pretty hopefull that it is software/sd format related. Thats one of those cases where servic centre sais a full flash is needed by now only they are able to do that:-( but till now i always found a way to work around that by trying everything in every way. I always thought my phone is bricked anyhow so it can just get better and by coincidence it worked all of a sudden

and am trying to upgrade to FROYO as well. Any advice on how to do so would be appreciated. Tried the various registry hacks and none have worked. I'm happy to use Odin but not sure which is the correct ROM image to use (from samfirmware). Thanks!

Well, first thing is first. I've been a couple of weeks away from my SGS tweaking. I'm right know figuring a way to make a backup of my ROM (non-nandroid), in which I can extract the Kernel, Modem and CSC (I received a brand-new unit from my provider, so I will take advantage of it )
That way I can flash them back in case of a screw-up. I didn't have that much luck with modems offered in other ROMs, so I need to keep an OEM copy of my stuff.
Also make a good copy of your /efs folder in case you mess it up. It took me around 3 weeks of reading before I started making any changes to my phone, so I'll recommend doing the same; there's no "quick-start" or quickguide on how to start. You will en up with 6 different windows open reading from everywhere
The FWs from samfw are OEMs. Theres like "not much" of improvemente if you switch to those. Take special attention to the one you chose cause most likely you will lose your 3G and/or 850MHz band. I recommend using only Australian and Canadian ROMs(I9000UGJG8 and I9000UGJH2 worked for me, you might try also I9000UGJK3). Regarding custom ROMs, you will need to try and try until you get it right as our SGS model is not the most popular. This means endless flashing
Cheers.
Sgs froyo flash nam bands
Thanks for the advice. This project consumed my thanksgiving but I finally got a good working SGS in the ATT network. I bought an unlocked SGS from Negri Electronics with the USA 3G bands but it came without FROYO and didn't have the 3 button restore available. After reading and reading (your note about multiple open windows at the same time is all too true!) and trying and trying, I was finally able to get to download mode by installing all the Android SDK tools onto my PC then going in by way of ADB. Far more complicated than a simple registry hack and ODIN but it worked.
I installed the DOC BUJP8 v9 ROM with all the enhancements and AOSP Email (I tried and tried to get stock FROYO email to work with 2 exchange accounts but it was impossibly slow and didn't work) while AOSP is working fine.
It seems, because my SGS had the 850 bands to begin with, that it's working fine. I found this other post on XDA (#770041) that had some keycodes I was able to use (*#2263#) and confirm I still have the 850 band.
Needless to say, make a good backup and be prepared - as already warned - to flash several times and it was ultimately a "trial and error" process that worked.
does anyone have the original brazilian/latinamerican i9000T firmware? I flashed the SGS I got from Negri with spike speedy and it looks like I lost my 850 3G band.
I never did find out how to totally back up the SGS as in back up each PDA, PHONE, and CSC file so as to be able to truly factory default it.
HI people. First of XDA Forum and Dev as you guy's are doing a great job.
Secondly i have this Motorola Milestone GSM version. I am stuck on Android 2.1, as every one how fast Motorola release Android updates for their smartphones. I have gone through lot of Rooting guides but i haven't tried one yet.
As there are lot of Rooting guides and ROM for Motorola milestone on XDA as well, i am kind confuse how to do rooting and how to use a ultimate ROM on Milestone.
If you guy's can look at my Moto version as given below and can suggest me some step by step guide and Some Good ROMS as well i will be very thankful to you guys'
I know there are lot of other users who have asked same question but i want it kind simple and crisp.

Most one-click-rooters work fine with the Milestone and it doesn't get any easier then running an app .
That's how I did my at least.
I have used universal root, but that doesn't allow APP2SD and using custom ROMS. So i want complete rooting so that i can load custom roms.

Yes it does...
The problem is that:
-for APP2SD you must have ext2 partition which you probably didnt create and for Custom ROMS you have to load the vulnerable recovery...which you probably didnt do...as well
Just my supposing...Corect me if I'm wrong!
First, ( I think) you have to flash vulnerable recovery, then root. There is also a beta 2.2.1 beta sbf available. after achieving root, you can google GOT TEAM ANDROID and click the first link which should lead to their blog - http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&sourc...BQ82GR7pNmLJSfPpg&sig2=Jd4iM6Nov5eYhJa2yrZLGg and there should be further instructions there. Can you guide me through on how to do
Flash Vulnerable Reovery.
How to root Milestone
What is SBF and how to use it.
What GOT TEAM ANDROID and why i need them?
If your milestone is anything like mine (I use the milestone available from telus, in canada), then your service provider may have added an un-root and return-to-factory-bootloader check on every boot.
in which case, you would need to install the OpenRecovery backup tool onto your sd card (it's an update.zip file + OpenRecovery directory), then flash a vulnerable bootloader using spf. reboot the phone (as is necessary when doing this flash), and as the system is coming up, start up into recovery (by pressing+holding the camera button, waiting for the yellow triangle w/"!", then pressing vol+ and the camera button), then execute update.zip
drop to terminal, and depending on your model, the .sh file that's un-rooting your phone may be in a different location, and simply rename the file, delete it, or make it non-executable.
Good luck!

I am not talking about jazzy ROMs, i want a ROM with all cool features + stable functionality

I am having the same issue. I did get it rooted with SuperOneClickv1.7-shortfuse.zip file. However, I'm not sure where to go from here. This is a lot more complicated than it was to root and upgrade my Moment to Froyo. I'm now working on my husband's HTC Hero CDMA build number is 2.32.651.2, Sprint release Android 2.1-1 update. I want to do a nandroid backup from what I understand (no clue how to do this!) and then flash a 2.2 or even 2.3 custom ROM to the phone after wiping some files? I have this process down on the Moment, but the Hero is completely different and I'm lost.
I have ASTRO file manager installed and under apps after using the SuperOneClick, I do see SuperUser. I was thinking I wanted to update to the CM 6.1 ROM for now, until the newer systems are completely stable and up-to-date... but I have no clue where to go from here as most directions I've found don't apply to this build. Since I'm 6 months pregnant and off of work until after baby gets here, I have most of the day to tinker with it, when not chasing a rowdy 3.5 year old around the house. Just need some guidance.

You need a custom recovery installed to nand and flash. Rom manager is the easiest way to install recovery. Once you have that, backup, wipe data, cache, and dalvik, install rom zip just like on the moment. Also to get to recovery, hold down home then power.

That's an older version. You can flash that way. I prefer to go into recovery to flash. Better luck that way for me. At least you don't have to run the updater to have factory to flash like the moment. You do need to nand restore to a sense rom to update profile and PRL though, and then nand back to CM.

I have rooted my phone using 'Universal Androot'
I want to flash CM6 or 7 (whichever is more stable)
I know I have to install rom manager and clockworks mod and such but here is my issue.
What CM rom will work with Alltel/CDMA and how do I not flash the baseband?
I know I can use 'APN Backup and Restore' for MMS/DATA which I of course will be using.. I cannot brick or lose service although I understand the risks.
I will be making a full backup..
Am I missing anything here? I do NOT want to flash for example a droid rom and get a non-booting phone..
Some people say I can run a droid rom others say it'll stop my phone from booting... due to a locked down boot loader/signing of the firmware.
For one Rom Manager Does NOT work on Milestones, and any of the custom roms under the Milestone Development section will work. This site http://android.doshaska.net/cm7 Has the signed Milestone CM builds. Check the Milestone Android Development section for more custom roms. And your going to want to get Open Recovery 3.3 which can be found here. http://code.google.com/p/androidiani-openrecovery/downloads/list
Also I'm sure this guide will help you. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=983516

His phone is not a milestone, its a Droid. Backup your radio files before you flash any other rom, else you will never get 3g to work. Nandroid first.
You can flash droid1 roms. They would work.

Woops your right, I didn't see that :S
Thanks guys,
I actually did it last night, got a little impatient.
1) you can backup specifically the baseband?
2) I went ahead and installed rom-manager pro and installed the cw mod and downloaded/installed the CM6.1.2 rom from Rom manager and it installed just fine and I'm up fully and running...
I have a question though, Rom manager is informing me of the newer CM7 build as an update, if I update does it just well, update?
or is it a full re-flash of the device?
If it is just an update and does not remove anything currently on the phone can I update to the stable cm7? Right now its telling me to update to the nightly build.
Thanks again for all your help..
Quote From Cyanogenmod forum: There are actually two models of the Milestone available. The A853 Milestone is a GSM phone with a locked bootloader, and a stock CyanogenMod ROM will NOT work....ever. The A854 Milestone is a CDMA phone, without a locked bootloader, and is identical in every way to the Motorola Droid. The only difference being the Droid comes with a 16GB SD card, while the A854 Milestone comes with an 8GMB SD card. CyangenMod will load perfectly on it.
So yeh, as you mentioned the CDMA version of the phone is a Droid1 and the bootloader is NOT locked.
EDIT
I did make sure to backup eveything I could
Titamium backup
Rom manager backup
SMS Backup
APN Backup (sucked, but manually fixed it)
and I copied them to the computer for safe keeping
CM7 is a full reflash.

I've been looking into it and alot of people are saying I can update, just dont tell it to remove my data and it should work..
I'll try and post my results, I have a backup of my CM6.1.2 and my Stock 2.1 so I'm not too concerned
EDIT
Semi-Bricked it with Rom-manager so I went in an re-flashed via recovery and its all good...
