Make apps work in both landscape positions? - Xoom Themes and Apps

Im using an LG G-Slate but since there is no G-Slate forum here and the Xoom is the most popular ill ask here. Is there a way to get apps to work in both landscape positions? As in, the landscape where the front camera is ontop and the landscape where it is on the bottom. I know iPad apps all do this, which makes folio cases great because you can have different angles using different positions and still see the app, but there are very few Android phone/tablet apps that do aside from google books, gmail and the like. Im thinking this may be an in-app thing but if it is possible to do from the tablets setting or something that would be great!
Prime examples of apps that do not work in both landscape positions: all angry birds apps, distraction, bakery/restraunt story, NETFLIX
netflix and angry birds are the two that i would like to see working the most
Thanks in advance!

This has been affecting me as well. I've search a couple times since I've had my xoom but I have never found a solution. The case I have forces me to use the xoom upside down (with the camera at the bottom) if I want to use it to type on a desk. Otherwise, it sits upright for video playing. If there is a way to force an application to always be landscape-upside-down, that would be perfect. I doubt there is such a solution, though. The app that is the most furious for me is the new Dolphin Pad app. The browser itself works in either position, rightside up or upside down, but when you select the settings menu, it forces it to be rightside up. I have tried setting the screen to auto-rotate as well as locking the screen in only upside-down. Unfortunately those couple applications always force the screen to be rightside up no matter what. Almost always it does it with applications that were designed for the phone. Most tablet applications work either way.

I was asking precisely because i have a case coming in the mail that forces me to do the same thing. Its pretty irritating that ill have to hold onto the tablet to type because at the vert. Angle its too high to type. Or i can use a bluetooth keyboard but thats a hassle. And for airplanes and cramped spaces itd be nice to have the low-angle option to watch videos

I never noticed this until now... was reading this thread in dolphin "upside down" just fine, but like you it forced me to flip to get into settings... all other functionality seems OK, so my guess is it is an app Dev fix and not a zoom fix. I haven't noticed this in other apps' but will test a few tonight for the OP and report back.

For me, it's mostly games that force me to turn the xoom around. It also happens with every single poker application I download. Like they are all conspiring against me.

Playing angry birds on a high angle would be difficult... its much better suited for a low angle. It works that way on ipad, why not android?

Anyone have any info? Now that i have the case thr number of apps that work seems even smaller than before...

When I wrote my game for a moment it worked in both landscape positions but then I broke it somehow. I think it is caused by using "landscape" instead of "horizontal" in layout or sth. Will be trying to fix it next week. But it also shows that it depends on the developer unfortunately. So you have to bugger him for every app that doesn't support it.

Man... i doubt any developer would listen to a single person asking for something like that haha it seems like too small an issue for many people to care

How do YOU demo (Show-off) your phone?

"WOAH! What phone is that??"
You: "This is the Nexus One. Check THIS out..."
(What do you do when showing off your phone? And have you converted any iPhone/BBers out there? Let's hear some stories!)
I show them the live wallpapers, especially the live earth rotation one.
I also show off how well google syncs up.
As well, I show off the youtube app, then that I have about 50 youtube videos downloaded.
I also show off the camera, damn good for a phone!
The keyboard, and how fast I can type on it(I can fly with this! Better than any hardware keyboard I have every used, although can't do it blind.)
Most of all, I show them how fast I can move from app to app, screen to screen, and what not... I usually do about a 2 minute demo that shows off almost the entire phone, and not once does it ever sit there waiting to load. That is the most impressive aspect of all!
I throw there phone to the ground crunch it with my boot then demand they kiss my phone as I pinch and zoom the pic of me crapping in a urinal.
OR
Do the "navigate to ___" to show them the turn by turn GPS nav.

Stock keyboard in landscape, portrait is a little small. One of the first things I do with any phone is type as fast as my thumbs can move, and I found that I could go way faster than I thought I could or would be able to...
I find myself typing really slow at times trying to make sure I hit the key, then remember that I can just start flaring away, and it will keep up. About the only thing I really do I can think of some might not is that I make sure I pull my thumb all the way up, partially and likely mostly easy and quick for me because I am a drummer and tap a lot, so am used to it. As well, I type with no fear!

Interesting, I've never tried typing fast. I get frustrated with on screen keyboards, I miss my G1 keyboard
Do you use the vibrate on keypress or leave it off? (If this has an effect on typing speed)
Where do you get the earth live wallpaper?

Personally I use haptic (vibrate)...we should start a keyboard tips and tricks thread
I have haptic, the vibrate thing, turned off personally... and yeah, when I type slow and deliberate I do much worse than when I just try to type as fast as I can, within reason of course. The only time I have a major issue is that auto correct will replace a word I spelled correctly with someting else, but I have been making a point of adding words to the dictionary so this is become a less common issue.
You get the earth live wallpaper in the market. Do a search for "live wallpaper" and it is one of the first 3 or 4... also, if you check the themes and apps section for the Nexus One, the dev has a support thread on here.
People rarely ask nor do I flaunt it, I never see anyone else with it. If they ask I would show them but I never have the live wallpapers enabled to show them right away, I would have to change the background just so they can be amazed by it

Ah, iPhone fan boys are the best! I had a customer come in with an unlocked iPhone a couple days ago, and I was finishing a text when he walked up... naturally, he asked what I had, showed it to him, and he said it was an iPhone clone... I said "No, it is a 1ghz Android OS Google Nexus One, see..." then showed him my live wallpaper and said "see, and iPhone can't do that"... it went on like this for a couple minutes... can your phone do this? Yup, and look mine is already loaded even though I started after you!
Then, I asked if his phone had google nav, with speech to text, speech to nav, speech to dial? Asked him to show me his background... If his iPhone had a 5mp flash camera? Expandable memory? It was brilliant!

I reply to them 'You think that's a plus? I think it's a negative! My phone is better... booyah!' (I hate iTunes, couldn't wait to get it off my desktop PC)
Like others have said, point one I show them my spinning Earth Live wallpaper, that changes depending what time of day it is.
Then, if there's a decent print/piece of art/product I Google Goggle it. 'Yeah, of course its a can of coke', 'Okay, but can your iPhone detect that its a can of coke?', 'Erm...'
Then I point out widgets (nothing new I know, but iPhone owners don't have them) like the News & Weather widget.
Then I generally just show them how smoothly it can move in and out of apps and tell tham about the snapdragon CPU and 512 RAM and ROM, which probably no other phone this year will beat. I also point out the amazing OLED screen. Last night I had a 3Gs owner admitting he was leaning towards wanting one

No? I've been hearing about 800 RAM, 1.2-1.5 GHz chips and dual-core processors. Not that I feel I need dual-core in my phone (because holy hell, heating issues; see laptops), but there you go. Maybe not debuting any time soon, but toward the end of 2010, almost definitely.
I show them Layar, FxCamera, and Google Sky Map

Personal experiences

I understand that a few of you have been using the phone. My contract has ended, and I'm really thinking about getting the Optimus 2X. I have read mixed reviews regarding the phone, and really want to hear from trusted XDA users.
So any advantages, disadvantages or verdicts would be really appreciated
Swedroid.se tested the phone a week ago, Swedroid is the biggest swedish community around Android, and its the only site I trust 100%! They said that its the best Android phone ever, they have tested so far.
You can check out the huge test here: http://www.swedroid.se/test-av-lg-optimus-2x/ (Its in Swedish though)
I agree with Hund. Swedroid does the best reviews you can ever see on the internet. They know their job and they test pretty much everything.
I've had the phone for a couple of days, so here are my first impressions:
Battery: I came from a Sony Ericsson X10i and the battery is a great improvement - can't give any stats though, but have pretty much been using the phone non-stop
Screen: Awesome screen with nice vibrant colors, good viewing angles and rather fair in sunlight.
OS: Everything is smoooooooth. Except when you change stuff like usb-mode. Then the media-player looks for new transferred media, but that is expected.
HDMI mirroring works like a charm! Great to show off and good when visiting people when you want to watch a movie.
Watched a couple of tv shows on a long busride today. Just standard 350mb .avi files that worked PERFECTLY! Even subs were crystal clear!
Camera - has some bugs with the blurryness, but I haven't really used it yet. Should be solved with a software update at some point.
I think that's about it.. BEST phone I've had so far and everyone I've shown it to was impressed BLING BLING

Do you use a Taskkiller like ATK or something. If you do stop using it, i had the same problems with those force-closes when using ATK. Also you have to bear in mind that it has stock 2.2.2 and most market place stuff is made for 2.2.1 .
My opinion on the LG 2x: I still can not believe it's from LG those guys really went in the right direction. I've had a BB9700 and a Galaxy S (darkys rom) and this LG really is a piece of work. The build is quite solid when compared to Samsungs Galaxy and the preformance is great. Battery live is about 130 % better then the SGS not 160 % as advertised.

I have this phone now for 5 days.
Before I had a HTC legend.
- speed is great.
- there is a lag in the lockscreen (when you press the power button you first see your homescreen, and a second later the lock screen)
- i didnt found a option for the email of my hotmail account to delete te messages from the server.
-I cant add wordt to my dictionary when typing a message.
- had several crashes while doing just nothing (scrolling through menus or something)
- a lot of programs start up by themself. and the advanced task killer is not automaticly closing it even when i put the setting on kill when screen is off.
overall a good phone, but it doesnt feel just that right like a HTC.
can anyone say something about multitouch on 2x? in a video i saw its capable to handle 10 points but more interesting would be if its now possible to pinch to zoom and move at a time.
e.g.: in browser you zoom in on a webpage and whlie zooming you move the centre of zooming to an other point like the upper right corner and it zooms to the new centre. ive seen this on windows phone and ios but android so far.

How do you set up your hotmail? I haven't been able to do that. On my X10i, when i deleted the messages of my phone, it didn't affect the server either, so maybe that's just they way android is set up.
The standard keyboard is pretty lacking in terms of features..
The random things you experience with programs could be due to the fact that you are using a task killer.. They only cause problems imo.

[APP] Photaf 3D Panorama

https://market.android.com/details?id=obg1.PhotafPro
I wanted to notify the Xoom community that I'm working with the author of this application using a unique method of actually making a video clip of what I'm doing with my Xoom so that he can actually watch and see how the device is reacting to his application.
Our results so far in 2 exchanges of e-mail have been to put it simply, outstanding.
First the product worked but with a few minor glitches, and I think that very soon he will update the market with something that is much more "Xoom Friendly".
The primary reason for me to post this thread is not just to let people know "hey there's a cool panorama app out there" but also to let you guys know that if you have an app or something that is not working just right on your Xoom you might be suprised by what a simple polite e-mail request gets you. If you're willing to put out the extra effort, you may even get faster than expected turn around
I purchased Photaf 3D Panorama to use on my Xoom last night. I really like the panorama pictures but for some reason I am forced to take the pictures manually. In “auto mode Photaf takes the first picture than after that I just get the right and left arrows and the second picture is never taken. If I run it in manual mode and just take a picture everytime the box around the thumbnail image turns green it works with no problems.
This is a cool app. I am surprise there is not more people interested in this.
Really cool, now that it have the ThunderBolt I missed that feature from the Fascinated. Thanks

I suspect that has to do with the dev tinkering with it to get it to work. Since I have an open dialog with him I will mention this.
OK we have everything working well in landscape but the dev is having a hard time with portrait I think it has to do with the compass while in portrait. Any developers have input on that?

Thanks for notifying the developer cwizardtx. I updated to the new version in the market today (2.6.3) but I am still having problems with the “Auto” mode. Before the red/green box at the bottom moved as I rotated the device allowing me to take pictures manually but since the update the box no longer moves correctly. The “Box” stays around the first picture then makes huge jumps, no longer moving in sync as I turn the Xoom. If anyone knows if a good screen shot / screen video taking program I will be happy to share my issue if it will help.

I have a version that may correct that issue but I think he may have already released it. Could you check that you are using version 2.6.4 for me?
Additionally: The only thing that functions "properly" is landscape mode. If you try to shoot anything in portrait mode you need to use manual mode for shooting only because the first shot never fires. We have been working back and forth on it and he feels like it has something to do with the accelerometer in the Tegra 2 chipset and is doing some research on it.
So to recap:
v2.6.4: - Landscape shooting should be working properly but portrait is only manual (and the auto-align preview box does not work at all in portrait, you have to wing it).
That all said - ALL functions work 100% properly on my Nexus One, so this is definately a device issue but we are working on it!
PS: I say "we" very loosely because I have no access to any source code or anything like that, I am simply making videos and screenshots and emailing him back and forth with testing and stuff as he sends me builds.

I suspect that all of us will have identical issues and successes if we're using the same version
If anyone happens to know any of the particulars in regards to handling landscape and portrait on the Xoom feel free to chime in.

I have installed this on my evo also, works great on it.
I've subscribed to this thread, please post when he's got all the kinks worked out and it's XOOM optimized. I will definitely buy it then
v2.6.5 is released
What I see:
- Bigger buttons on the Xoom
- Automatic shooting in landscape is corrected
- Automatic shooting in portrait is not working properly and needs to be done manually

Cool, I wish I knew more about coding and how the accelerometer worked to help the guy out.
Same here; did the update today and everything working good now. Thanks for your help Cwizardtx
The developer of Photaf 3D Panorama emailed me today, he finally got his hands on a honeycomb tablet (an Asus but if it fixes the app I dont care) and finally squashed the last really annoying bug: Automatic picture taking in portrait mode. Works like a champ now, compass orientation is fixed and the app rocks

swype or ultra keyboard?

i tried installing both of these apps and neither work.
is there anything out there to make em work? or is there another swype style keyboard?
i am TERRIBLE at typing. its just not at receptive of a touch screen as the ipad. but i like the android way way more.
its like i have to press harder to get a key pressed.
thanks in advance
EDIT : also love the feature to type from ultra keyboard with your voice. obviously voice search works on the tab, but im loooking to do emails and such with voice too.. possible?
thanks
Have you run the touch calibration?
i have not... ill search around for it in the menu and clockworkmod
i did the screen calibration. didnt really do anything. its just possible the screen just isnt quite as responsive if i would like.
swype or ultrakeyboard is much more important to me
thanks
It's Swype for me...
I'm a big fan of Swype. I use it on my Droid phone and cannot live without it. I also have it on my gtablet, and continue to love it, although swyping on the large screen in landscape mode takes a little getting used to. Swyping in portrait mode is much better. However, I still like it over others.
Installing Swype is not a simple thing, since the normal install apps check in with Swype headquarters, where you'll be told you are not a phone, so goodbye. And many of the apks for the app will say your screen is not the right size. But search this site, and you will find many threads on the subject, including the link to the proper apk. Basically, you will have to google for a specific version of swype, and then track it down yourself.
It is not impossible. But worth the search.
I know you didn't ask about it, but IMO thumb keyboard is the best for our g tabs

I tried this, and while I like the large keys, I don't like the fact that it takes 100% of the screen up, absolutely useless for IMS or emails or almost anything else. I want something similar to the gingerbread keyboard but with taller, more square like buttons. I've tried using the TapaTalk or whatever it is on my VeganGinger install but it doesn't work at all.

Before I switched to thumb i was using SwiftKey, which was free on amazon Store not too long ago. It reminds me of the g bread kb. I wanted exactly what you wanted, a bigger g bread kb, but now I'm happy with thumb. Good luck.

The one-touch calibration app in this subforum did not work for me, but the calibrate.ini trick (where you put a blank file named calibration.ini in the root of your microSD card and reboot) did work for me. I was stabbing at icons left and right before (especially the home soft button, ARGH!), wanting to toss the Tab out the window, but now it's as sensitive as my Evo's screen.
Swype is easy to install if you find the right file. It doesn't really work all that well on a 10" in landscape mode though. You have to move your hand around too much to make it effective.
I have been using Thumb Keyboard from the Market. I can type with only my thumbs while holding the tablet in my hands. In landscape mode it puts each side of the keyboard close to the sides so the keys are easily reachable. In portrait mode I have it set to just give me the normal full keyboard. It works great and I highly recommend checking it out. It costs a buck or 2.
My only problem with Swype, at least the version I have, is that you cannot turn off the dictionary lookup auto correct. So if the word isn't in the dictionary (websites, usernames, etc...) swype will try to autocorrect to what it thinks it should be, or pop up the guesser window with nothing even close.
Also swype uses up the whole screen for many imput windows which isn't really needed on a tablet, but whatever.
I use SlideIT 3.2, works perfectly.
i just downloaded thumb keyboard. when i go in to language and keyboard, it wont let me populate the check box, enabling it.
it gives me the lil warning, then just wont check.
any help please?

Both versions in the Marketplace say for Android 3.0...just guessing.
tried swype but using slideit
I tried swype. i got it installed, then moved to /system/app but it wouldn't work other than as a normal keyboard. tried slide-it and it works great.

If you are having trouble wilh Swype You might try flexT9

This alternative works really well. I had it for my previous 7" tablet but when I got the xoom it was no longer available. They now support the xoom and I've reinstalled it. Is from the makers of Dragon Naturally Speaking. It costs 4.95 but includes 4 input methods: swipe, voice input, writing (but not cursive) and typing.
I really like it when I have to take notes. It's pretty quick and is pretty good in swipe mode with adding the correct punctuation, though until you train it, it comes up with some pretty humorous (or irritating) guesses. Voice recognition is really quite good. For regular typing its fine but I prefer the Tablet keyboard (as it is just like a pc keyboard).
Consider checking this one out.

x2. i've been using this for the past 2 months or so. love the layout keyboard (looks like the galaxy tab keyboard) and the swiping capability. only gripe is that it seems to drain battery? are you experiencing the same issue?

I haven't been using it long enough to tell yet.
I'd like to be offered an option to use either flexT9 or the Tablet keyboard every time i start to type but I haven't been able to set that up. Do you know how?

yeah. go to settings--language and input---keyboard settings-input settings-select "always show"
this is off the top off my head as i don't have the xoom with me at the moment. i believe that's what you do to have the keyboard icon show up in the notification bar whenever you start typing. u can hit that icon and an option to what keyboard you want to use will pop up. remember to check the boxes all the keyboards you want to use in the settings menu before you proceed or else the flext9 will not show up as an optional keyboard.
