[Q] Unlocked Phone, Unrooted Phone Gingerbread? - HTC Incredible S

I've recently gotten a Unlocked Bell (but Unrooted!) IS with Froyo on it.
I check the system software update and the gingerbread update is available for download and whatnot.
I download it and click to install but it stops after a restart on the bootloader screen where I see the install package cannot open. (You know the screen with the blue android and exclamation mark)
Is it REQUIRED that I need to root the IS to update the phone to 2.3?
I'm under Telus btw.
-Canada-
Thanks

Since your IncS is carrier unlocked, you are trying to load a Bell GB update on the phone and I bet it is checking to see if the phone has a Bell CID (which it doesn't since you have unlocked it).
You would be better off running AlphaRevX Revolutionary to S-OFF and install ClockworkMod recovery. After that process you would then be able to install a rooted version of the IncS WWE Gingerbread ROM and lose all of the Bell bloatware.

I'm just very unsure about rooting IS 'cause it says its still in the beta stages so, I'm trying to optimize my phone as much as it's able before considering rooting (which I'm sure everyone is trying to).
Also not sure if anything will go wrong and such 'cause it's in beta
Had the Desire before and everything was sure 100% hence.

[Q] Downgrading Hboot Loader

Hey,
I rooted my htc wildfire with unrevoked and worked fine, i got the official 2.2 update come in and i went to install it but i couldnt cos it was rooted , so i flashed my phone with 2 Rom's but they upgraded my bootloader so i cant flash my phone any lower can anyone help me?
Thanks in advanced
Dhar9417
You cannot downgrade your bootloader. I think you're stuck until someone finds a way to root the new HBOOT.
I just want to go back to the stock android 2.1 , then update it to 2.2 ofiicially without rooting
The 'custom ROM' you flashed is actually official FroYo. There would be no difference even if you downgraded and got official FroYo. (Its not possible yet as stated above anyway, but, just letting you know)

[Q] Can i upgrade HTC Incredible S 2.3.3 to 2.3.5?

Right now there is no official 2.3.5/Sense 3.0 upgrade for the IncS, so currently your only option is to S-OFF (or HTC Unlock depending on your HBOOT version) and install a custom recovery and then flash a custom 2.3.5 ROM.
It has been reported that an official IncS 2.3.5/Sense 3.0 update should be released on Dec 10, 2011, but only time will tell if those reports are true or not.
UPDATE: Football has uploaded the official IncS 2.3.5/Sense 3.0 RUU to the Development section!!!!!!!!
sense 3.0 ruu in football's thread..congrats
2.3.5/Sense 3.0 just received new update from HTC, but now i have problem, im download and phone ask me to install now, so after that phone is restarted and i dont have normal update screen i have some warning screen and that is all, i cant install this update but dont know what is problem, i have Revolutionary installed ...

i have no experience in the matter, but from what i've learned from reading other posts in the forum over the last few weeks...
if you used revolutionary to s-off, you can't update to the official ruu without reverting back to s-on. there are numerous guides in the forum for that so just do a search.
if you upgrade to the official ruu, however, your bootloader will be upgraded to 2.0 as well (someone reported this after upgrading to the official ruu) and i don't know if you will be able to downgrade. so, if you are looking to upgrade, please know that there's a possibility that you won't be able to s-off your phone (at least until someone figures out a way to downgrade from 2.0 bootloader).
my phone is s-off and rooted.
Recieved the OTA update yesterday and after i installed, on rebooting it wouldnt go past the HTC white screen. Stuck/bricked! i then realized that i couldnt load the clockworkmod recovery anymore, got an error cannot open e:\.....
hustled for hours trying to factory reset and finally had to install fastboot on my computer so that i could load the clockworkmod recovery image directly to my phone. after loading clockworkmod recovery then i could now use my previous backup and got back my phone working.... phew.
Hope this helps someone out there.

[Q] OTA updates and root

So,
My HTC Incredible S is rooted, and the bootloader is unlocked (what the point of unlocking the bootloader is I still don't know as I can't install custom ROMS... but back to the point at hand...), and the OTA update to 2.3.5 arrived 2 weeks ago.
Needless to say, the update would not install. Despite researching the issue, I'm still confused as to what exactly is preventing the update from working. Is the the fact that my device is rooted? Or is it the unlocked bootloader? I tried relocking the bootloader and that had no effect, so I'm assuming rooted devices for some reason are rejected by the update.
So considering I can't install custom ROMs (I'm HBOOT 1.16 and the downgrade guide didn't work for me, so no s-off), and I now can't upgrade officially, I'm feeling a little stuck.
Is there a way to force an official update to install on a phone in my 'condition'?
Note: My recovery is custom - Revolutionary CWM - and I can't find (and therefore cannot flash) an original recovery image... would this affect the updating process?
Thanks guys/gals,
G
Root won't stop an ota but an unlocked bootloader will. You can check in your boot screen if its still unlocked or if its relocked.

You need to replace CWM with the standard HTC recovery (you simply need to extract the recovery.img file from a RUU/ROM.zip file) and then relock the bootloader before the OTA will install correctly.
At hboot 1.16 and rooted all you should have to do is install Cwm and than you can flash custom ROM's..... Not sure what your problem is.

@itsbeertimenow - yeah, unlocking the bootloader never did anything for me in terms of being able to flash custom ROMs... I guess 's-off' is required
@tpbklake, nonverbose
Yeah, I had a feeling the custom recovery had something to do with it. As I mentioned before, even relocking the bootloader had no effect.
Does the recovery have to be a specific version? I'm running Android 2.3.3, so will any 2.3.3 recovery work or does it have to be a recovery for an HTC Incredible S running Android 2.3.3 - that's a little harder to find. Any suggestions for an ruu/zip file to extract a recovery img from?
Thanks again for the helpful responses.

Instead of trying to install the OTA update for Sense 3/2.3.5 why don't you flash the stock, rooted version of 2.3.5/Sense 3 ROM that I posted in the Dev section. With the unlocked bootloader and CWM you can flash this ROM and then manually flash the boot.img in that ROM's zip file and you should be good to go.
@tpbklake
I think I'd already tried that and the update process aborted pretty early on. I'll give it another go and check out troubleshooting threads related to the process. thanks again.

Update: I'm following the instructions as per this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337105

Here is the 2.3.5/Sense 3.0 stock, rooted ROM built directly from the OTA you were trying to install. You would flash it in CWM just like you did for CM7.

Thanks for the link, will come in handy when I want to go back to a 'stock' setup... wasn't very impressed with CM7 so I then tried the Virtuous Affinity ROM (2.3.5/S3.5) - fantastic. Thanks again for your help!

PLEASE help me fix my phone!

really sorry for starting a new thread but i've been searching like crazy and i have not found anything like what i have to deal with.
So the phone WAS a stock rogers Raider, sim unlocked when i bought it. Everything was okay until i started messing around with it.
What has happened to the phone:
I used hasoon's kit to unlock the bootloader and gain root access, along with rom manager and cwm because i wanted to download an ics rom for my phone. well the VERY NEXT DAY the stock ota update for ics came out for my phone, and when i tried to update it the official way it would get stuck on the htc screen until my battery completely died beyond repair, so 2 weeks later when the new battery came in the mail, i was still rooted and on 2.3. I learned after that the ota updates do not work on my rooted phone for some reason, so i tried to install an ics rom through clockworkmod recovery, and now when i try to boot my phone it gets stuck at the htc screen and doesnt do anything more, but using power and vol. UP i can still access hboot, which says "unlocked with s-on" ive tried to hit "factory reset" but it still wont boot.
If possible, what i would like to do to the phone:
Completely restore the phone to stock, locked bootloader, unrooted, and to a stock gingerbread so i can install the ota ice cream sandwich update.
I know i'm asking for a ton of help but please hear me out, im honestly getting depressed because of this darn phone.
Also, please use words as simple as you can because im really not the type of person who shouldve even started with all this stuff!

Use the guide in my signature. It's step 6. Basically what it entails is relocking the bootloader (an OTA, RUU, PH zip all won't work with an unlocked bootloader), then running the Rogers ICS RUU for your device (the link for that is in the guide). The RUU does the same thing as the OTA. That's the easiest way to do it. No need to mess around with going back to stock GB and all that. You can go straight to stock ICS if you re-lock your bootloader and run the ICS RUU.

You need to read before you jump the gun and mess around
First of all you can't be rooted and you can't have an unlocked bootloader for official updates/ruus
Second you can't flash ics unless you are s off and get an ics hboot
Here's the fix,
1) download the ruu from HTC website...I can try and find a link later
2) boot into hboot then fastboot
3) run the tool kit and use the relock bootloader option
4) if your phone reboots just go back to fastboot
5) if your bootloader now says relocked then just run the ruu
Ruu is official update done through a computer

Thank you both for your replies, i absolutely agree i really regret doing this, a link would be greatly appreciated too. and i just relocked my bootloader and it says "relocked security warning" so i guess its relocked, and finally how would i run the ruu? Im really sorry for being so clueless
The ICS Rogers RUU is here. Just boot into hboot and run it on your computer.

okay thanks so much, it always says "All free download slots are in use" which is strange because it only says that when i try to download the rogers ruu. i guess i just have to wait.
*update*
okay one more annoying question i promise. if i download gingerbread ruu from hotfile, i cant post the link but from another thread it works, and by doing what you said, hboot, plugin to computer and run the .exe, can i then upgrade to 4.0 by using the ota?
When i re-locked my bootloader, to confirm i went into h-boot, and it should say "Re locked bootloader".
But follow slapshot guide to the tee and you'll be good.

[Q] Help needed updating to latest OTA

I'm having issues trying to update to the latest firmware and accept the OTA. A little info first...
I'm S-off and rooted on a non-KH edition Spring M8, CID 11111111 with hboot 3.16.0.0000, radio 1.08.20.0612_4. On the software side of things I have 1.54.654.13.
My problem is this... I get the message about the software update being available to update to 1.54.654.15. When I try to install it brings me to a phone with a red triangle. The odd thing is that I've re-flashed stock recovery in order to accept the OTA. I believe my problem stems from trying to flash the HK version of firmware and software to the phone previously. I think I've flashed the latest firmware, but I still cant figure out how to update my software to the latest stock version. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've searched through threads for hours and cant figure it out.

Yes, still having issues. Last night I went back to TWRP recovery to flash the HK version stock rooted rom. I havent flashed yet though. Do I need the HK edition firmare to flash the HK edition stock rooted rom? My goal is to get the latest radio with the latest software to allow me to utilize the wifi calling feature. I have terrible reception at my house and have been using an airave unit. Only problem is I've been stuck on CDMA only because there is the faintest of LTE signals and the phone will choose that over my full bars CDMA airave signal. Thanks

As far as your first post, I think you're missing a step when you see the red triangle press the volume up and power button to get into the stock recovery. If it does nothing, that means you need to go into the power settings and turn off fastboot. Normally you can't get to the bootloader if fastboot is turned on, but you can still reboot there with a few apps, like ROM Manager.

If you have successfully installed the latest firmware, you should have hboot 3.18. I'm not sure you are fully up to date. Here's a post I found with a modified hboot 3.18 that I successfully installed after SuperCID (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2795823&page=14). That should get you to latest hboot. Then, you can install the latest rooted stock rom (odex or deodex).
The same thread (first page) has the latest stock rooted rom and another firmware update (minus the recovery) for you to try in case you need more than hboot.
This should get you to the point where you have wi-fi calling.
