Do I need to downgrade my firmware - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I have htc g1 and was wondering if I need to downgrade my firmware for installing cynogenmod 6
Information about phone:
Firmware version: 1.6
Baseband version 62.525.20.18H_2.22.20.23
Kernel version: [email protected])
Build number: dream-user 1.6 DRC83 14721 ota-rel-keys
Production team: www.HIAPK.com Ver 3.0_g1_ion
Cheers.

Yes, you do! You need to downgrade and root your G1.

Just found out that the phone has already been rooted. I typed su into terminal and I got to the next line with #. I guess it is rooted, yeah?

hmmmm.... im pretty sure if you have 1.6 than you are not rooted, is it DMD40? or you might just have a custom donut rom if you are rooted... anyway follow this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098899

I am confused now. I have been reading this article:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.p...Firmware_to_CyanogenMod#Rooting_the_HTC_Dream
Do you reckon, I can just downgrade my phone by downloading RC29 (US) (since I have a T-Mobile G1), and skip the rooting step, and go to Installing a Custom Recovery Image step?
Your help is much appreciated.

well basically when you downgrade and install the custom recovery, that is considered rooting! but there so many good roms out now that if you follow the guide all the way to get the 28.25 radio and 0013d spl you can flash the latest and greatest roms

need help rooting...

i just updated to firmware 1.5 cupcake build number CRB43, how do i root it? i wanted to tether and use muti-touch...i downgraded to RC29 and followed the rooting steps but when i put in the firmware 1.5 it said error. If I just downgrade to RC29 and use f/w 1.5 without rooting then it works.
you will need to use a modified /custom rom after root, otherwise the device just unroots itself. please look into the various roms as some require new radio / spl to be installed and can brick the device.
I am using Cyanogen's rom which doesnt require the spl/radio change.
Hope this helps

Need to add more information. Did you add the recovery.img, hardspl, new spl, radio, and what rom?

asking for help with rooting.

so I have tired everything so please don't tell me to go google it or link me to the how to.
I have a CANADIAN HTC Dream so I'm going to make this as detalied as I can. my goal is to install a custom ROM.
So the info:
Model number: HTC Dream
Firmware version: 1.5
Baseband version: 62.52s.20.18u_3.22.20.17
Build number: 1.85.631.5 146733 CL#33863
I don't know if you need all that.
so what I have tried so far is:
the one click root method when I try it it wont boot into the recovery mode I tried multiple times.
I tired your manual method but when I go to the downgrade step it tells me model ID incorrect! then update failed.
so how can I root the thing like I said I have (now) tried everything I could find.
Have you tried this method? it is the way to root rogers phones, i assume you have rogers.
Have you checked it via the goldcard way?
if not chek my sig
Hmm wow, seems like the manufactures are making it harder and harder to root... I am so glad I have the original G1 now

I need help with the downgrading and flashing

Hello guys!
I'm new with the android OS, so I would like to ask your help with my problem. My intention was originally to flash Cyanogen mod to my newly bought phome. I succesfully rooted my 1.1 firmware G1, and after that, I managed to replace the original recovery console with CyanogenMod Recovery 1.4 through flashrec.
In the recovery console I flashed to the "signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-img-14721.zip" which i've downloaded from the HTC developer page. Everything went fine, but after the flashing completed I accidentaly hit the reboot option before I could start the Cyanogen flash.
So eventually I made an 1.6 firmware Android Dev Phone 1 which I didnt wanted to.
Can I change it back to a regular phone with a previous firmware or I stuck with this forever?
I couldnt install flashrec anymore, and the Cyanogens recovery console has been replaced with the original one. When I try to install HardSPL the installiaton aborts itself about halfway. I tried to downgrade through bootloader with an RC7 dreaimg, but it sad "not allowed". Maybe good news is that I made a backup with Nandroid before the flashing, but as I read in order to restore it I need HardSPL.
Details:
T-Mobile G1 (Drea110 PVT 32B; HBOOT-0.95.0000; CPLD-4)
Model number: Android Dev Phone 1
Firmware version: 1.6

Kernel version: [email protected] #19
Build number: dream_devphone-userdebug 1.6 DRC83 14721 test-keys
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
gubika
Just flash dreaming.nbh in bootloader
Thank you for your answer. I tried it, but in a gray screen a text popped up: "checking..." and shortly it said: "002802 not allow". After that the default color striped bootloader screen appeared without any options.

Or, just wait a week or two for the official release of Froyo.
Is that what we are talking about? One or two weeks?
Flashing the rom is not that big of a deal, was concerned about unlocking the bootloader for AT&T and what was required to do it. Didn't want to make a mistake and have a $500 paperweight
Still not sure where to go or what to download after reading the stickies about AT&T to unlock the bootloader before the flash.
when I got my phone 3 weeks ago, they said 1 or 2 weeks then also, lol....
I have the same type phone att/rogers. I did this then this (thx Jack)
Follow this until rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=636795
then
Follow the guide for rooted N1s from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=686326
using...
# Links for update.zip: [DOWNLOAD][MIRROR][MIRROR]
# How to update your rooted Nexus One: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=686734
I followed both of those to the T and it all worked out, once or twice i had a problem or 2.... but I just renamed the recovery image and it worked..... and something else, over all... for a noob, I did pretty good, lol. Very glad I did, sooooo much faster, smoother and flash support
No rooting needed if you use the "originally" leaked FRF50 build .. just download to the phone and run the update.
You may use google to search for the file and the instructions
Good luck!
Edit: sorry, just realized you have an AT&T one. So, you may need to root. My one I got directly from Google and it does not need to be rooted.

[Q] Giving Up Already

After downgrading my G1 to version 1.0. I installed a cupcake rom v1.5. rooted the phone..am having problem installing Gingerbread.. Any full help on how to go about it will be really appreciated. Thanks
the problem most likely is an incompatible radio/spl with the rom you are planning to use. most of the "newer" roms require the 2708+ update.
boot into hboot and check what you have
