Best ebook reader for the Touch Pro?

I've been using Mobipocket on my Fuze but used to use iSilo on my old Kaiser. I've heard some good things about the others too. What ebook reader do you guys use? What do you recommend?

isilo, foxit pdf and chm reader basically... im a medical student... i read a lot!!

Are there any with finger scrolling?

I haven't found one that is "finger" friendly but another ebook reader that is available is Microsoft Reader. It uses a format known as LIT but most of the books I see that are good quality are based on Sony's format which are the LRF files. Unfortunately, I haven't found one that reads the LRF format and the converters that I found do not support a conversion of it either..

i use mobipoket and foxit reader (although documents to go with PDFtoGO is a good alternative). Haven.t used isilo yet but heard good things about it

I like Adobe Reader LE 2.5. It is surprisingly fast (considering Acrobat's notorious slowness on the desktop) and the reflow option is extremely useful (if only there was a way to save the zoom and the reflow option...).
The only other PDF reader I tried is Foxit, but I just don't like it. It's significantly slow (again, surprising considering Foxit's speed on the desktop) and the massive advertisement on the top is rather annoying.

i can scroll thw three of them similar to opera mobile... i just drag.

I love eReader from the fictionwise folks. I have been using it for years. Check it out at http://www.ereader.com. The reader is free and the books are reasonably priced. You can configure the reader to look the way you want it to look. I like black text on white background but they have a bunch of themes and you can make your own theme. The books are all properly formatted to look good in on your phone.

I'm surprised that ereaders aren't being kept up -- most of them see like they haven't really changed in years, back when I had an Axim. Why aren't developers working on ereaders? not enoguh demand?

That's a good question. I noticed the same thing. It's interesting that the sw for the mobiles is declining, but the hardware solutions are expanding...i.e. kindle, etc.

Mobipocket is still my favorite. I was hoping great things would happen once Amazon bought Mobipocket, but it seems like the Kindle has dashed any hope of that. Looking through the forums at Mobipocket.com it looks as though any future development may be over. At this point I think it would be hard to change readers since I've collected a huge library in Mobipocket. Maybe if Barnes & Noble get around to porting their reader to WM I'll give it a try.

It's free, and the technique the program uses to fit your text/pages to your devices' screen is brilliant. I also use repligo pdf server which batch converts unlimited pdf files to the repligo format.

Yeah, ereader is pretty nice. I've used it and mobipocket, and got away from ereader for a couple of years. I just went back to it, and think I like it better than mobi. The themes are nice, and I like the fact that it has real pagination. Mobipocket is a pain in the butt, because if you skip back a page when you first open it up (or even after just minimizing it), it will hop back like 10 pages. It's really easy to lose your place. You don't get full page with ereader, but I find that isn't a problem for me. I also like the flash reading mode-it's pretty nice if you want to re-read a section that you forgot, or if you're currently reading a section that you want to forget.

I have used froyo, and Honeycomb on mine... so ill touch lightly on that.
I originally rooted my Nook because, I hated looking at the home screen. I wouldn't mind it if I could add my own books... but that limit annoyed me, since it would cost more than the device to make it look nice.
Anyways I was quite excited to see what I can do, something like Quickoffice HD (ink app). Works amazingly well, I was editing a power point on it... and I had full control over everything. It worked really well, I could see all the slides on the side. It really was a great app to play with, perhaps not to make it, but completely possible to if I had to.
I have been using the pure widgets, and they help a lot with School and keeping life in check. Since I dont need to swap screens to look into it... It looks really nice, and works very well.
Email apps sorta suck... Using the Gmail or the "Email" app it feels lack luster. Its enough to work... but not enough to make you feel like its better than a phone. Mail'd works well, but HTML emails crash it, and theres a lot of loading and buttons dont appear on it.
Movies, and Google maps... Help a lot with looking for something to do. If you have wifi you can get a general location. Its not enough to be very helpful (unless you know the area) but it really is helpful. If you were to use this feature in bulk there would be more enough enough space to see everything.
Youtube, and Pocketcloud... Both work really well, nothing above the top here, but enough to make them viable.
Browser is nice, it loads quite nice. You can get a nice view of screen, and all of that. Not a ton to say here, but completely possible to post on a site on the go.
Games, I dont have a ton of them, but they're far easier to control on the bigger screen. I tried angry birds on my phone and feels too small. On the nook or a nook size device... its very good.
Overall... Theres not a lot that my phone can do, that my Nook cant. A lot of apps are either part of the overlay, but as a whole you can get a lot out of the nook. If you dont mind using exact programs, you will be set. Things like the messenger I use, required wifi off (for whatever reason). So I had to find another, things like this are quite common.
Till honeycomb comes around, which made the nook feel less like a big phone... Tablets are not going to be amazingly above a phone either. With something like the nook, you're getting a really good E-Reader, which can do the rest. If you want some reading, think of it as a cost split.
50% = Good E-Reader
50% = Tablet
A small E-Reader app is nice, but the Nookcolor one looks very professional and sleek.

I bought mine specifically to root, and for one reason: the ability to carry technical documents, and to be able to edit them. Since then, I've found the NC strengths to be the above, plus simple web browsing, calendar/appointments, gmail, RSS, and News feeds. The major drawbacks, IMO, are screen sensitivity on the right hand side and the lack of hardware keys (although Button Savior or softkeys are mostly adequate). Also, some apps can't be used if a popup box is required for setting options; the background and foreground text are displayed in the same color so you just get a blank screen.
Some Good Apps: Google Reader, Documents to Go, HanDBase, Jorte, ColorNote, Evernote, Widgetsoid 2.x, Repligo, Weatherbug
As you can tell, my NC is set up for "business" use...

I ordered the nook before I knew that it can be easily rooted. Now I 'm running froyo from the sd and it's really fast and stable. I 'm still using it primarily to read e-books but it's nice to have a fully functioning tablet around.

I have 3.0 running on it, and it's quite stable. I'm loving this. It's far better than the Samsung Galaxy Tab, and for a fraction of the price. The screen is much nicer and it seems to run faster.
I would like to overclock this in 3.0, but I'm running into some major stability problems. I found this link saying it should work just fine, but I'm not having luck. When I looked at the "official" thread here, it says that it's causing issues and they're trying to fix it. Does anyone know if that's still the case? I found the article on addictive tips dot com.
Anywho, I got rid of my EVO a couple months ago as I simply couldn't justify the large bill every month. For less than 2 months of my cell phone bill, I can buy a Nook Color and get better functionality (easier for presentations with a client, and the larger screen makes it quite easy to navigate and use apps). I'd jump onboard. It can only get better, and it's already pretty freakin amazing.

One app make it entirely worth it... OverDrive. Free ebooks and audiobooks from your local library. Love it.

As a straight reader, I would use my nook a few times a week when I had spare time to read. As a rooted Android tablet, I use it daily and LOVE it. In places were I have wifi - which is around 80-85% of the time, I use it instead of my phone.
Most used apps: K9Mail, Facebook, Twitter, Engadets, XDA, Aldiko, WeatherBug, reading news and playing games like Angry Birds, MathDuko, Tomeno HD. I use Zeam and Softkeys for launcher and back/home buttons. I watch movies occasionall converted with HandBrake.
Missing - hardware home/back button - though Softkeys does a pretty good job. I agree that the screen sensitivity in the corners can get frustrating.
I wish I could more easily tether it to my cell phone. I'd either have to upgrade my phone or try to root my HTC Eris. I could live with messing up my nook but not my phone.

What about Google Docs? Does it work in Android browser or Dolphin? It's quite good.

MS Office Live
Has anyone tried MS office for web? It runs very good in chorme on desktop, waiting for my wifi xoom to see how it works in honeycomb browser

I have paid for Documents to Go and Picsel Smart Office. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I like Picsel because it is the only app so far that displays graphics correctly but track changes are not available until the next big release (they have a good customer support). D2G has the track changes but lacks a lot of correct rendering and PPT support is atrocious. I'm sure in the next 2-3 months we'll have a decent selection to choose from!

Both Office Live and Google Docs are too heavy for the Xoom browsers, which is to be expected, they are not exactly optimized for our screen size and lack of desktop horsepower.
They both run, but are very clunky.
I tried ThinkOffice, no go - FC off the bat.
OfficeSuite Pro trial seems to loose the document as you type, then goes into a "Recover your doc screen" - I couldn't even get a paragraph in with this.
I'm open to suggestions here, I really need a solid Doc/XLS app that won't have issues that hinder it - I don't need full fledge office or anything, but I do need something that will let me View/Edit and finding one that does bullet points would be freakin sweet.

I don't need anything for graphics really, I just really need to read pdf and word docs and be able to edit all of them

Then Documents to Go and Picsel Smart Office should work for you! But only the paid version allows to edit

What do you mean? I use them on my home computer in the same resolution in a browser that scores less in SunSpider than the Xoom stock browser. Is it because of touch? How would it work with keyboard and mouse (or touchpad)? Have anyone tried?

I purchased the Quick Office HD and I have to say I am really impressed so far!
Works great on my Xoom.

Try them, you can tell that the browsers struggles. More the office live than Google docs, but even with google docs there are things that you just have to have a mouse for. Sadly there is not yet an HTML standard for touch input as a replacement for mouse events. Especially with things like Hover, Drag, and Drop.

I think that the office apps that are available in the market are more than adequate for some light editing and productivity on the go. Its not necessary for these apps to have full compatibility with desktop versions imho. Being far too critical really.

Sure, I can also use my phone for typing but what I need a tablet to do is to recognize basic fonts, comments, and paragraph formatting. I don't think we're expecting too much. If I want a text editor that's different but if you claim to have a "professional" office suite and can't even display the symbol font then something's not right. But I'm glad it works for you!

i also ordered quick office HD and I mainly use powerpoint but quick office keeps auto advancing the slides. I don't want to have to keep pressing the pause button every time I manually advance the slides. Does anyone know how to turn off the auto advancing so that I can just manually advance the slides when I want to?

It works well enough for notes, but not as I would like it to. Formatting is very weird, and the worst part is no auto correct or spell check. If I am going to type fast and efficiently, I can't be going back every five seconds to touch the screen and change a letter. Very frustrating.
I'm hoping the office tech catches up with tablets soon. Don't really understand why I can't just have the same text functionality in my word processing app that I do in my Gmail or text messages.

Best hand writing note taking app????

Does anyone use their Xoom for taking handwritten notes?
I want to use the device for school and got a great pen that works with it, but I only found a drawing app that MAY work.
What does everyone else use for notes? Does anyone hand-write their notes?
I did purchase evernote, but may opt out due to that they have access to your notes (crazy). Plus it is "typed" input only.

I'm looking for something like this as well.
I bought the T9 keyboard hoping to be able to write quickly with my stylus, but unfortunately the handwriting recognition is far poorer than my writing allows. Could never be useful in real life for me.
There were several good ones for the iPad when I had it - I'm sure a good android version will come around soon.

You should try Handrite. It has the beginnings of the iPad apps reviewed in the link below. The fact that it integrates to Evernote is a plus. I think I have found something that will work for me for now.
But for the Holy Grail of stylus based input apps...
I ran across this review of the note taking apps for iPad. The review uses the specific context of a medical professional; but I think it does a terrific job in highlighting the features that will be important to any stylus based app written for Honeycomb. Notes Plus looks like a winner with Note Taker HD a close second. Both developer web sites have very informative videos introducing their applications. I would recommend that we all lobby these developers to be "first to market" for their Android Honeycomb versions. Some of you older readers may find it interesting that Note Taker HD is written by Dan Bricklin. Dan was the author of VisiCalc, the original spreadsheet and precursor to Lotus 123 which was blown out of existence by MS Excel.

One additional point... When asked about an Android version, Dan Bricklin (Noter Taker HD) commented that he wants to get the backlog of features in the iPad version completed before he begins an Android port. He also commented that in order to get the required performance for the app, he needed to do a lot of system level and direct hardware coding... so it is likely not a trival porting effort. Viet Tran (Notes Plus) stated that he wouldn't begin looking at an Android port for another 6 months. Viet probably will need to address the same performance coding issues that Dan speaks of.

Along that vein, can someone point out the holy grail of styluses?

I purchased the Pen/Stylus from Amazon - it is noted as "Kensington 2nd Generation Apple iPad 1 and 2 / iPhone / iPod / Motorola Xoom Tablet / Galaxy / Blackberry Playbook Virtuoso Touch Screen Stylus and Pen (Black) Newest Model"
It is a solid pen plus the back side is a stylus!

I use WritePad with a Targus stylus and it works wonderfully. What shocked me was the fact that it has a built in function so that if you write " 1+1= " it will work as a calculator and type out 1+1=2 (not that I am actually using it for simple math but i though that was cool. Check it out online and see if you like it.

I have the Kensington. I like it because it is about 1/2 inch longer than the other capped pen stylus. It feels more like a standard pen in your hand. It works well with the Handrite app.

Don't get a pogo. I have a boxwave that is awesome and it appears to be the way other companies are making them now. Also there is a project on kickstarter called cosmonaut that I have ordered one from. If I ever get it and remember I will report back on the quality.

Ok, so of the 180,456,192 Note taking apps for android that I have installed on my Xoom over the last 2 weeks. This one seems to be the best (I Think my Crap-tastic Griffin stylus has a lot to do with most little issues)
One request I would have for the developer is to come up with a way to detect the hand being placed on the screen to allow more natural writing position.
Even if the dev where to maybe add a box or an area of the screen that is not part of the drawing canvas. possibly disable the lower half, and do and auto-magic scrolling when the text reached that far?

I do like the app. It has a way to go but it is a good start. And thanks for the stylus suggestions.

I haven't tried it yet but something like Writepad by a company called Phatware used in conjunction with Evernotes might be a useable solution. They just released a new version.

Simple Overview of a Targus Stylus. Works and feels pretty standard. I also take a look at Handwrite App and text highlighting.

Writepad has a 24 demo apk available. I tested it out and I feel it is by far the best solution I have found.

How is writepad for other things than text?
If all I wanted to write was text, then I would just used a keyboard - a very important feature for me is to be able to seamlessly switch back from figures (mathematical in nature, not detailed sketches) to [hand]writing. How well does Handrite do this?

EzPDF Reader has freehand annotations now, too. It's only a buck and looks/works fantastic on the XOOM. It's my favorite PDF app by far, and the freehand annotations made it even better.

I do not have a Zoom, only a Droid phone - but I tried out a bunch of handwriting apps including Handrite and Genial Writing on that and found that for me, the best is FreeNote. I was so impressed that I wrote a review/user guide on it over at Droid Forums:

Which work best with palm recognition ?
Maybe some advise for settings ?
At the moment l can only say that the Android Handwriting Detection is really not bad. Maybe good for longer texts in landscape mode

Honestly I could not use the stylus very well, the tip is too soft for me to use it to take notes...

I'm facing some problems with the palm recognition.
I hope Nvidia will enhance this feature in the near future. An dedicated writing App like Dabbler for drawing would be really nice

When the stylus is removed, there should be an extra navbar icon on the left that disables touch input. I guess that would work to prevent unwanted inputs, just not automatically.

I tried several apps to make quickly notes but the Samsung Note experience is still a mile ahead...

I dont mind the stock evernote, not that I frequently use it. I find it works pretty well. I agree with hairdewx the stylus is kinda soft to take notes with. I use it for drawing myself. Dabbler is friggin horrible but the App ArtFlow works amazing with the Tablet and the Stylus.

It helps but if you want to zoom in or out, moving the sheet you are writing on you cant use your Fingers.
It sometimes happens, that when I lift or move my palm, it is recognized as an touch input with the Stylus.
So there would be the chance to increase the rate of recognition. would really help me

Works great for note taking. I use it daily at work for meetings.

I think the most best app for I've found so far is Autodesk Sketchbook Express. Super fast, fluid and GREAT for note taking although still can't find ruled template but that might just be laziness on my part

Autodesk Sketchbook has traditionally/historically been a programmed aimed at drawing/painting- so it's going to lack a ruled template, unless you decide to create one/scan one in, and use it as a layer underneath your drawing canvas.

Definitely but its recognition of stylus strokes is by far the fastest of any of the apps I've used, including NVIDIA's. That was the appeal. But I do get your point

I can't speak specifically to the stylus, but when I have used normal capacitive styli, the main app I have used is LectureNotes by Acadoid. It's a fantastic note-taking app, and even if you can't finagle it to work exactly like you would think a Galaxy Note would, it has a lot of customization that you can make to the program so that it better fits your needs. There's a free trial version if you want to give it a try, but I use the full version and feel that it is worth the money.
Again, not sure how well it interacts with apps that are not in the default installed software package (I'm hoping fine though, I'm switching to one in the coming weeks!), however I do know that the app itself has some settings for heuristic palm rejection, and that there are different settings like that you could fiddle around with.

Since my previous comment I had the opportunity to use LectureNotes and it is by far the fastest of the apps for stylus recognition...even beating sketchbook.. Very useful and comprehensive app. Highly recommended!

So it works well with lecture notes? As in functional as a note taking tool? ( ie above average accuracy, palm rejection etc)

Papyrus
Papyrus is what i use on my note 3 and my note 10.1 exynos edition.
Works awesome but haven't tried on my shield yet.
If it works, i use all that are mentioned above as well, but for ease of use and cloud integration between devices, and simplicity, i think it is the best.

Anyone tried OneNote with this tablet? (note taking part, possible?)

I personally prefer Fiinotes or Handrite Notes for note taking. I've found these to work very well for note taking and recording meeting minutes.

I got the Nvidia Shield with half the purpose of taking notes during class and I found just the app for it. It's LectureNotes (here's the playstore link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.acadoid.lecturenotes) It is a paid app sadly, there's a trial though for you to check it out. You can backup your notes, create separate notebooks for each class or something, you can export them to PDFs, input typed text if you like, pictures, crop them as you like etc. There's really anything you might consider needing, there's options for stylus and for using your fingers at the same time (like recognize the finger as an eraser while the stylus as a pen etc. It's somewhat messy in the settings section, it has far too many so you'll have to play around and see what suits you, it wouldn't do you much good if I gave suggestions of what I use probably, although I can take screenshots if you'd like. Check it out, it has also some extensions for audio recordings (sounds useful) or video recordings (not so useful for me at least), but since you pay extra for them I haven't tried neither.
