[Fix] Rebooting and Crashing - Motorola Droid 3

For those with Droid 3s that love to randomly reboot. and crash/lag
and also crash on camera, here is a fix
1) FACTORY RESET PHONE (Erase all data)
2) When its back up and your signing back in, DO NOT CHECK 'Restore Data' or 'Keep Device Backed up'
3) Open settings later, and ensure they're both unchecked under Privacy
NEVER enable them
4) For safety incase wifi settings were restored:
Go to Wireless and Networks, Wifi Settings, Manage Network Settings, tap first option and itll say 'forget or erase wifi settings' , choose Yes
5) Reboot Phone
*If camera is still not up to your standards, use Camera360 from market.
Should be all fixed up, no more reboots or crashes, and fast.
I guess its a temporary fix until Moto serves an update.
Sucks if you rely on backup to get your apps back, but Titanium Backup is a nice app to backup settings/apps

I have random reboots also, but the strangest thing is that when I shut the phone off I can put it in my pocket or on a table and it will turn itself back on. Was wondering if this would help this as well?

Is it being charged when it turns back on?
Nothing is pressing the power button right
Not sure of your issue would be fixed by this you can try

not being charged when it turns back on,
nothing pressing power button. will try and let u now what happens.

Hey Guys,
I know this thread is ancient, but I couldn't find anything newer on that topic.
I'm having the random reboot issue since a while now and wondered if you could help me piece together what I've got.
I managed to find a way to provoke the reboots and that is by flooding the RAM. I opened up some random apps (doesn't seem to matter which ones, as long as they consume a lot of RAM) and it crashed rather quickly. I also managed to get a Logcat of that, but it seems pretty normal.
I attached the Logcat-Log of the last 15 sec before the crash.
But sometimes there are reboots that happen when I don't have anything intense running.
Also sometimes (often when I am using rather intense apps) the phone gets stuck with the screen turned off and it essentially acts like dead until I do a battery pull. Sometimes when it does that, it just reboots on its own after a minute or two. That could be what Cglocke might have been experiencing.
I am running an XT860 with System version 5.2.476.XT860.BellMobility.en.CA and Android Version 2.3.6
Does anybody have any ideas on that topic?

FRF91 update is buggy

After updating to FRF91, I notice two things.
1) My phone froze at least 3 times since the update when I tried to make a phone call. I had to remove the battery and restart it.
2) My calls are now less clear even with my blue-tooth. When I call someone, they and I will hear static. Sometimes the static is really bad. (no, I am not holding it the wrong way )
Anyone have similar issues?
My Nexus One is NOT rooted.
stock 2.1 to FRF50(manual install)->FRF83(manual install)->FRF91(OTA install)
No issues here. Clean install.
I would agree it seems buggy to me also; it could be the manual update path of updating, but im def getting some wonkyness.
When im on edge at my house, it always seems like WIFI is on demand and not connected (This differs from what my phone used to do and i also have wifi to never sleep); so when i try to access something intially i get a network error then the Wifi connects; then i connect even though im on edge which used to connect albeit slow.
A slight jerkiness when I longpress to remove widgets; don't remember that one previously.
Very erratic battery life; seems to be due to network switching from 3g to edge to wifi; can't really confirm that though; not real rogue apps on my device that are running, but who knows.
Car dock has been giving some force close issues from time to time which didn't really occur previously.
FRF83 more stable
I was thinking of trying to go back to FRF83 as that seems more stable.
I will first try to do a factory reset and see what happens after that.

let me know how that works out; I may do the same. Maybe go back and ota update.
I applied the full FRF85B when I did mine, and wiped cache / format user data from the boot loader. That cleared up issues.
gmail stopped working properly for me.
I have had some issues with my phone freezing up too but my trackball would still flash when i got alerts. I think it might be related to trackball alert because now that I have uninstalled it i haven't gotten any freezes.
I did the factory reset and I no longer have any problems. I am still waiting to see if my dialing still freezes randomly though.

I'm still on frf83 and found that flashing the frf91 gapps has somewhat reduced the freezes/reboots.
My XDA app freezes for a couple of seconds before it responds. Is this app up to date for frf91?

1. Going into Gmail it takes forever to display emails (usually shows the "loading icon" for 10-20 seconds) as if it is only then connecting to the server and downloading new/old emails.
2. Caller ID still does not keep settings when rebooting.
3. Task Managers don't actually seem to kill tasks anymore. Have tried multiple with settings to auto-kill 10 minutes after the screen goes off ... 5 hours later the programs are still running. Obviously just KILLS battery life.

Yeah, obviously, you're using auto-kill, it probably tries over and over and over when they don't actually close.
Stop using auto-kill. Even if it worked you will get less battery life by killing tasks. Read up about it. Only reason to EVER kill something is if it isn't acting nicely and has a bug that keeps using CPU or keeps the phone awake.
Factory Reset works almost all the time
If you got problems after update you should allways wipe (factory reset)

[Q] GPS always running and how to fix?

My wife and I both have the captivate and for some reason her GPS is always on. (The icon in the notification bar is always blinking) Its getting to be really annoying since her battery life has gone to complete crap, lasting no more than a few hours at most. How can I figure out what is causing the GPS to constantly be running?
I don't have this problem on my phone, it is just hers that does it.
It's likely an app still running in the background, grab one of the plethora of free task managers on the market, should help you narrow it down

Will one of these programs list everything that is running? I ask this because the GPS turns on immediately as the phone boots, and stays running. So, I know its not an errant app.
Yes they will

You can turn off GPS
You can trun off the GPS by going to settings->location..-> uncheck use GPS

While this is a good temporary solution for saving battery, I don't consider it a fix because then the phone would have no GPS capabilities at all.
The phone should behave the way mine does, when something requests to use the GPS, the icon shows up in the notification bar, otherwise, it does nothing. Her notification bar ALWAYS has the icon on it, blinking away and doing something.
I am going to try some task managers tonight and see if we can narrow it down.

Apps can start as soon as the phone boots. Again, I suggest going through the apps you have installed that use GPS and review each one to be sure nothing is amiss.
My friend got a Captivate this week. His GPS also runs constantly. I compared our phones side by side, and he had almost no apps running - just the basic apps. We totally cleared out his home screens. I was completlely puzzled why his GPS was running.
We both went to Settings->About Phone. He was running firmware 2.1, I was running firmware2.1-update1. He just got his phone, I'm not sure why it has the older firmware on it.
I'm wondering if this is the reason?
Perhaps deactivate google location update information services.
If it happens from the get go with no apps running, your gps could be running simply to let google know your location. Reset system to factory and opt out of (allow my location - or something like that)
give Startup Auditor a try - free app on android market
If you are within return period take it back and have it replaced. You shouldn't have to use any fixes on a brand new unit. Now if you've messed with custom ROMs or kernals that could be the cause. If you've done nothing to it and it's stock I'd do an exchange.

It's got to be an app running in the background. You didn't happen to go into the GPS test service menu, did you? Because I know some people go there and press home instead of back to quit it, and the test app runs in the background (though I would imagine once the battery dies and the phone is recharged and restarted, it probably wouldn't still be running...
Last week, I traveled to some remote area that only has 2G data service. I found my phone's GPS stayed on when I fired up the Google map and closed the app right after. This never happens when I'm in 3G data service area. The GPS will be off automatically even before the home screen shows up.
I have to use the power widget to toggle the GPS off and on to turn it off.
So, it may be something special about EDGE service.
I was able to produce a similar issue twice by switching away from the camera app using the home button without having taken a picture. This is obviously with geotagging turned on in the camera options. I even turned GPS off, but it went right back to searching for satellites when I turned it back on.
This is inside a building with no hope of getting a GPS fix.

Try use the back button instead of home button to get out of your camera app. Most apps will do a cleanup/release resources when using back button. But if you use Home button, most apps will stay running in memory without release any resources.

Data connectivity issues

Hello everyone.
I have unlocked D3 on stock .906 rom, rooted, and I am on gsm network. My previous phone (and first experience with android was an HTC desire). Like with the old one, also with d3, I really felt abandoned and forgotten from Motorola when they truncated the upgrade path to ICS . Well enough with old stuff, now the question. What I really liked of desire was the possibility to turn on/off data connectivity at will, no apn mods were required, just tap that widget from htc, and woila data connection is on or off, how many times you want, regardless of the time between each tap. With d3, at first there is no moto widget to perform this action, easy fix though. I am using widgetsoid to turn on/off data. My experience with this is as follows:
Data turn off is immediate (understandable) - correct behavior.
Data turn on behaves differently - if it tap the widget shortly after turning data off, then it'll work as it should - data comes back on. If some time has passed, data won't re-enable, and I need to enter in the *#*#info#*#* menu and then it'll start to try to reconnect, resulting in data on after a few moments.
I also use the battery and data manager and chose one of the three moto/vzw predefined settings and I noticed that, while data connection automatically goes off at 10pm, it will not automatically come up at 8am (as per settings predefined in the rule). So, I need to go into info menu, at which point it'll start to reconnect. Also, I need to mention that if I wake the phone say at 10:30pm generally it'll reconnect automatically, which is fine.
Also, I tried to make a screenshot using drocap2, because while not connected, in info menu it displays "disconnected at 12:59 am", which isn't the case at all because I turned off data maybe at 8pm or at some other time, but unfortunately it started to connect and the message is not there anymore.
Has anyone experienced such behavior in the past? Did you manage to fix it? If yes how?
Many thanks,

I would suggest using the Airplane mode. That should turn off all radio and when you turn it back in it restarts the radio or data
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA
Disable that battery mode thingy. Just use performance mode. It seems to be causing your problems.
@Jason Roach
Enabling/disabling airplane mode does not seem very practical.
@Mr.Obvious
I'll try the suggestion and post back.
Seriously though, why did Motorola not implement something resembling htc's data on/off widget?
Thanks to both of you

Hi there,
I tried your suggestion Mr. Obvious, but to have data back on i still need to go in info menu (wait there a couple of seconds).
Well, i guess there is no way to make it better using stock rom. Based on your experience, how are other roms in regard to this?
Thanks in advance

[Q] Note 3 screen wont turn off

As stated, screen will not go off via timeout or power button tap. Power button is recognized and will bring up shut down menu like normal.
Device is rooted (thanks DG) and had been running well for over a week. Defrosted all apps from tibu in case I got over zealous but no better. A factory reset has not cleared it up either. Hoping the oneclick from the root package will correct the issue, but thats not until I get home later this evening.
Has anyone experienced / recovered from this issue?
Smart stay is turned off
I've had noticeable lag like a few seconds and sometimes I wonder if it's going to shut off but it always does. Better set a dark lock screen wallpaper to conserve your battery

Thanks for the thoughts.
I had already gone through the standard - double check the settings, remove recent apps. When all that failed and a factory reset still didn't clear it up I was beginning to worry about some kind of hardware damage (don't see how since I treat it better than my child ).
Fortunately the one click from the root seems to have restored proper operation. Back to rooting and rebuilding!

I'm having the same problem, I rooted through vroot.... what do you mean one click fixed it little my incite would be helpful....
thank you
Mine just did this, scared the hell out of me It also didn't go into deep sleep before it started. (Not rooted).
Pulled the battery, waited 30 seconds, plugged it back in.... same thing. Waited a few minutes, seems to have sorted itself out.
Scary....
This is definitely a software bug and it is related to the Headphone detection bug that people are having too (it's actually the same bug causing both issues). This happens to me quite often after I restart my phone. It's kind of like the phone hangs during the startup process. I've also noticed that the wifi/bluetooth status that was present before restarting the phone (i.e. whether they on/off) doesn't get applied until the bug sorts itself out.
For me sometimes this works: open an app like Chrome and then hit the home button to get back to your launcher. This works 95% of the time for me. I'm wondering if it has something to do with not having Touchwiz set as the default launcher.
I'm experiencing this same problem. If I don't manually turn the screen off by tapping the power button, the screen will not timeout.

Notification problems

I seem to be having an intermittent problem with notifications on my new Moto G, when using the device and a notification comes through everything works 100%, however I sleep the device by tapping the power button as you do, occasionally notifications will not come through and then I tap the power button and the phone buzzes and the notification light starts flashing like they just came through at that second (when the time on the notification shows as X minuets previous).
I can't seem to replicate this in any fashion, it seems completely random and effects all types of notification, Gmail, WhatsApp and also the Ringer from Android Device Manager.
The Ringer from Android Device Manager is where I first confirmed the problem, I was playing with the Android Device Manager locating my phone which was sleeping right next to me, it located it fine so I hit ring and it said 'successful' or words to that effect, but the device was not ringing at all, picked up the phone and woke it, it immediately started ringing. I tried it a 2nd time and the same thing happened again, the 3rd time it worked as designed.
I've tried restarting the phone and clearing the data of effected apps, but neither worked, a reset of the device is the next logical step but I would like to hear if anyone else has this problem or has any other solutions.
This is happening when the device is connected to WiFi (even while sleeping) with the mobile data either enabled or disabled, I have not tried what happens if WiFi is not turned on, because when I'm at home I want it to use WiFi.
TLDR: sometimes by random I don't get notifications until I manually wake the device when they did actually come through X minutes previous it just didn't tell me.

Ok will do, is the 'Factory Reset' option in the menu sufficient, or is there something else I should do?

I have keep WiFi on during sleep set to Always, and Avoid Poor Connections and WiFi Optimisation both ticked everything else is off, I've never used Motorola Assist.
I'll untick Avoid Poor Connections but I doubt it could be that as I have very good WiFi signal where I am.

OK when I find out that Avoid poor connections being unticked is not working (which I've just had a notification suggesting it isn't) I'll untick WiFi optimisation, I'm hesitant to untick it right now as it says it saves battery life.
OK new development I was listening to music on the phone (the phone is sleeping) the song ended but the next one didn't start, as soon as I tapped the power button the next song started.
I'm going to try resetting the phone as soon as I get chance, I just need to use a voucher in an app first as I'd loose it otherwise.
Double post
Reset the device today, my plan was to use the Recovery but none of the options would appear it would only display the Android laying down (even when pressing buttons), so instead used the Factory Reset option in the menu, only time will tell but fingers crossed it seems to be working OK now :fingers-crossed:
