[Q] Help for an App Developer - Nook Color General

Hello XDA'rs,
I work for the developer Loud Crow Interactive Inc. and we build book apps for kids.
We've recently launched into the Android Market and are having trouble with our app being installed on rooted nook colors. The issues appear to be on the licensing side.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what this could be? Also, what does a rooted nook register as (device) on the Android Market place,
Thanks in advance,
Tom

What's the error, logcat ?, what's the app?
dude u gotta give some info if need a solution.
There could be a million things that could cause problems like that.

We are all waiting for an answer. I have an outstanding request in with Google that I have had to update several times as they seem to be dancing around the question. When and if I hear I will post a response.

The App is "The Going to Bed Book" or "PopOut! The Tale of Peter Rabbit" - Our users are getting a "Invalid License" error. We're going to root one of our nooks soon to do some testing, but until then we were thinking we might be able to get something from the forums. Both users who reported the issue were running CM7, which I also run on my HTC IS, and runs our apps fine. Thus we're thinking it could have something to do with the device ID running against the licenses?
As we set up restrictions by device, We were curious what a rooted NC running CM7 would show as in terms of a device on the Android Market place?
Thanks for the help guys, and thanks for the patience. I'm not the actual Android developer on the team. He's out of the office for the week,
Cheers,
Tom

I think he means he is having trouble getting the application to install from the market in general. I looked up the applications and the NC was not a supported device.
I don't want to pay the money to download it to my phone and sideload it (I'm at work anyways). I don't know much about applications and how devices are determined to be compatible other than maybe their permissions. However, these applications (there are two on the market), don't require anything other than SD access.

That might be part of some of this. I was not aware developers were setting restrictions by device. Is this new?

model name -NookColor
product name -encore
And there is really no way to find out the problem, without looking at the logcat.

No, this feature is available to every developer since a long time. but there are 600 or so devices so not a lot of people bother with it.

Actually, questions to the market run against your account and the email info and log the following device details:
> IIILanguage: en
> IssueType: market_website
> Language: en
> android_app_name: Facebook
> android_os: gingerbread
> android_os_other:
> device_manufacturer: other
> device_manufacturer_other: Barnes & Noble
> hidden_country: US
> website_issue_select: grayed_device

device_manufacturer= bn
If u want to know more take a look at build.prop, people have uploaded it in netflix thread, which reminds me that a lot of users usually change their device and fake it to run different apps.

Those were direct quotes from what Google's filters picked up when I sent an email while logged in to the market.

Thanks guys, this will be a good start. If and when we resolve the issue I'll be sure to post an update with the details. I really wish Android Market supported promo codes; we'd love to be able to throw out some free copies for you guys to have a look at and test for these one off issues.
Thanks Again!

I assume if you sideload the .apk it will install fine?

Just want to contribute that I have the Going to Bed Book installed and running fine on my Nook. I am still running CM7 7.1RC, and have my build.prop spoofed for Netflix (no longer required, but I never changed it back and haven't flashed a new CM7 in a while). The only change I made in build.prop was setting the manufacturer to HTC.
The book runs great and is my son's new favorite app.

You may have an issue using get.DeviceID()... have one of your users use my IMEI generator and see if it fixes their problem. They can also spoof Manufacture, Device and Model with the newest version.
IMEI Generator Thread.

I have it on my CM7 (7.0.3 to lazy to update, running off sd no changes to build.prop) Nook and it works fine. My daughter loves it.
Some of the pages are kind of hard to register a turn, and it always starts upsidedown then flips itself over. But both of those things are the same on my incredible 2 as well.

Color Nook App List

I have a Sharepoint site so I can create collaboration sites super duper easy.
I'm not sure if we have an app list yet....but here's one.
http://sp.texultant.apps4rent.info/MoSo/NC/Lists/App List/AllItems.aspx
It's wide open, anybody can anonymously add and edit posts....so be nice....If it gets abused I'll have to lock it down and require logins....you don't want that hassle do you?
Perhaps it may be a good idea to include the most recent version number tested of each app?

Could someone check whether USA today, NY Times, Twitter, Facebook and GV apks work on a rooted nook color. Planning on ordering one and rooting.
Yes, I know it wont make phone calls, but want to see if it will notify of texts.
Also, I see people installing Google Maps. Can it be used to find your location?
Thanks in advance.
Search through this thread to see if anyone has gotten them to work. Its over in the Nook Color Android Development forum.

Nook android app on rooted Nook Color

Has anyone been able to run the Nook Android Application on a rooted Nook Color?
When I try to run it, it just exists immediately.
Why would you want to run the android app, when you already have the nook.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Nookie Froyo can and from what I've been told works fine, therefore the app works on the screen and such, but for some reason no it doesn't work properly in the B&N ROM.
I have the same experience, that is, immediate exit.
Why run it on the NookColor??
Because the Market app is just better.
Page turning is more like a page turn, the interface is better......
Tried killing native processes and it still won’t work..
No, ideas. I guess I’ll wait for Froyo.

I knew someone was going to ask that.
Easy - once you add about 2700 books, the library app on the nookColor shows 0 books. You can still search, but you can no longer browse. (That's using up 2.5GB of space - so just about half).
I have 0 faith that B&N will fix this, so I was thinking perhaps that the android app would not have this limitation.
Whoa....have you reported this bug?
If that's the case i have no doubt it WILL be fixed. Has anyone duplicated this issue with that many books?

I really hope you are right, but I wonder where you get your optimism.
E-mail technical support @ Barnes and Noble is non-existent. So far, the suggestions have ranged form hard resetting the device, to telling me how I can unarchive my books. So I gave up on that.
I called in a few times, and managed to get to the next level up of support, but can't seem to get them to file a bug report in their system. Previous companies I worked for, we would gladly file a bug report and give the customer the #. Not here.
As you can imagine, 2700 books might be considered an edge case - but not for long - especially given that the Nook reads PDFs, etc. 2700 is not all that much.
There's a post here: http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com...ks-in-Library/m-p/770718/highlight/true#M3277 which shows another user concurring. I have seen others with the same issue as well...
Two things.
First, another valid reason to utilize the android app is the ability to use multiple accounts. I personally use three accounts on B&N, and it is super annoying that I have to wipe my account just to read my other books.
Second, if this is a real bug present in the stock Barnes and Noble library, they will fix it. The original NOOK has had five updates to fix bugs and add features, and Barnes and Noble will continue this with the NOOKcolor. The main reason they chose the android OS as opposed to creating their own ( a la kindle or sony) was the easiness of OTA updates.

Also, the reason I am looking for it, is the ability to read holding the nook landscape, it is more confortable to me that way.
I prefer the Phone version of the UI in the Nook App and would like my CM7 NC to look the same as some of the button in the tablet version are hard to hit for some reason (especially 'go to shop', 'settings', etc).
I installed the APK that my phone downloaded but the app knows it's a tablet and converts to that. Anyone know how to make it look more like the phone version?

Adding G-Tablet to devices on the new Market site.

OK, I'm frustrated.
I have been trying to add my gtab to my devices on the new Market site, and have so far been unable to do so. Actually, that is not exactly true. I can get it to show up partially.
I have a Droid phone, and I see the phone when I go to my Market Account, Settings, My Devices. I enter the new nickname for my tablet.. [tablet, gtablet, Viewsonic G-Tablet, Malata ... all tried separately], I check the "show in menus" option. Press the Update button on the right. And nothing happens. The Maker, Model, Carrier columns for the tablet are empty, with only a hyphen. I cannot enter information directly into these columns, and whenever I try to download something, only the phone shows up. When I click on the little black triangle to expand the devices, I DO see the GTablet there. But it is grayed out with a question mark beside it. It says it is not compatible with this device. Every single app is not compatible with my tablet?
What am I missing?

Ya funny thing is, I think mine showed up (and someone will correct me I bet) as VS GTablet Advent Vegan 5.1.
Something like that but I thought oh they even know I am running the VEGAn ROM. Interesting indeed.
i'm runing vega5.1 and i had to do nothing... he just appeared..
but yesterday i had to do the market fix again and it disappeared.. LOL

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me. It was there as a malata gtab running tnt lite, and I had to do market fix again. Now its like it was never there. Is there anyone we can talk to at google about this? Like a customer support type?

Maybe it is just the simple fact that this tablet is not supposed to be on the market at all. So calling Google to ask why your tablet with the hacked market doesn't work probably won't get you very far.
What is the big deal with this web market anyway? I have no problem using the market app on the tablet.

+1 I just use the market on the tablet.... My device(for now) is showing in web market.
My G-Tab running Vegan 5.1 is working in the new market with no changes or modifications except editing the nickname. I installed an app to it via the new market already. Since I have a Droid also, I kinda like the ability to install on either or both devices. YMMV, apparently...
Nvidia VEGAn-TAB-v1.0.0B5.1
My tablet showed up under the web-based market as: "Nvidia VEGAn-TAB-v1.0.0B5.1 ". I added a nickname and downloaded some applications. Since I wasn't connected to the internet at the time it was held in abeyance. Once I got a wifi connection, boom down they came. So I can now peruse the market at work or as I monitor these forums, find an application, purchase it (or not) while I am still thinking about it and have it update the tablet the next time it connects. Not bad functionality for someone like me whose work environment is wifi restricted.
I still have one issue I would like to see Google fix. I purchased a application under one gmail account but after reflashing from tnt-lite to Vegan Tab I put my other account on the device first. Now I can't update that application without some tricky effort. Not sure I want to go through that effort or pay the $5 again
While that was me being stupid, I proposed to Google that I could envision the case where I might want to purchase an application with my work credit card and put that on their tablet and also purchase an application with my personal credit card. Their current schema doesn't allow for that. I can see where with telephones it might be a little more personal but tablets may start becoming shared devices say within a family.
What they seem to have for that situation is the ability to use more than one CC with the account. In that case you could use your work CC for some and personal for others.
Not a help for your situation, but it does address the situation you proposed.

The point was that there is no reason for Google to not support the g tab with ANY Rom. They support the galaxy tab, the. Streak too. Why is it ok for those devices? Is it because they are tied to a service and not just WiFi?

Google has prerequisites that must be met for a device to have official and supported Market. GPS and cellular radio are on that list if I'm not mistaken.

I'm getting the same showing up in my market access, but where we differ, is I have yet to have an application actually download to my tablet. I've gone through 5-6 different apps that did show the G-Tablet as a compatible device, and these were not installed on my tablet before going to the web market...
The big difference now is I am seeing lots more apps using the legacy Market app on the tablet.
I figured the first week or so would be pounding the web market, and things seem to be settling down, if just a small bit.

I think that they are not trying to give us a hard time as much as they are just trying to have some sort of way to keep things manageable. I mean, they set certain guidelines that devices need to follow to get market access so hopefully most of the apps will work. GPS, and cell type data connection are a couple requirements. Why? I don't know. Guess they had to start somewhere.
I think it is also done so developers can build apps that hopefully work for the types of devices that do qualify. Imagine how hard it would be to make apps that worked on every variation of Android out there. How often do we have issues with apps that don't work on one rom, but work on a different rom.
Maybe it was just to try and keep the market from being like the wild wild west...
Apple has it pretty easy. There are only a couple of hardware platforms they need to worry about. How about Android? There are probably a 1000 different hardware variants out there.
I really won't be surprised if they come up with a way to keep all non qualified devices off the market. Not that big of a deal really if they do though.
So far my tablet is showing on the new market and allows me to download apps to it. I'm running vegan tab 5.1 if that helps anyone...

You are probably right, i tend to lean towards everything being based on how these companies can make the most money. Like if what i said is true, maybe then google gets a bigger kick back from the carriers, or phone manufacterers. Its ATT 's fault really, lmao, since everything they do is based on getting more money from me as a subscriber. it seems loke they try to make evry feature, an extra charge, without lowering the standard monthly fees. (i know i am most likely wrong, it just seems this way to me). I am not askin for free stuff, it just seems like they keep the services i want out of my pockets' reach.

I can confirm web market was working running TNT Lite... stopped working after redoing market fix. Web market working again... after flashing Vegan and wiping data.
For the people with working web based market: did you change your android id? if you did, did you change it to a different devices id or did you use one from an emulator?

Page Turner - Epub Reader with position sync

Has anyone tried this app to see how well it works?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nightwhistler.pageturner.ads
I found it to work great between my Nexus 7 and my Galaxy Nexus, and I'm wondering if it's worth nootering my Nook for
For anyone willing to try it out, you simply import the epub file on both devices, then after reading on one, from the other, with the book open, press menu and "sync reading progress". After that, I think it stays synchronized between the two devices as best I can tell.
Keep in mind for testing that the sync uploads and downloads don't appear to be instant so it might take a few minutes for changes to get pushed, which is fine by me.
I spent a long time trying to find a good solution for a reader app that would stay synced between devices and I found this one to be the best! Hope it works well on the Nook!
Just installed, when i open it, it just flashes and go back to launcher screen.
Tried it also, same result. It's a pity... Sounded promising.
can anybody get a logcat of the app crash? I'm going to point the dev to this thread..
i never did a logcat before, i hope its right.
just opened ddms, opened logcat, then go to pageturner and opened, this is the result:

PageTurner for Nook Touch
I've been working on getting PageTurner to work with the Nook Touch.
The changes aren't in the main PageTurner build, but you can get a preliminary test build here:
http://www.projectgus.com/files/pageturner/PageTurner.apk
Please let me know if you find any issues. The PageTurner author Alex hasn't reviewed the changes yet, but in theory he's happy to merge them - so at some point the Google Play versions (PageTurner Pro, etc.) will also support Nook Touch.
Source is at
https://github.com/projectgus/PageTurner/tree/nook_touch
Changes for Nook Touch:
* Fix segfault at startup (seems no OpenType font support on Nook Touch.)
* Support hardware buttons for page forward/back (direction configurable in Settings.)
* Better defaults (disable animations, bigger font, etc.)
* Workaround broken Nook theming, so no white-on-white text in dialogs.
* Disable the shelf background image.
installed and it work \o/
I have not test all function for the moment. but try all this week

I'm quickly chiming in as the author of PageTurner... I don't own a Nook myself so I can't test it.
I have been coordinating with projectgus to see which changes are needed for the app to support the Nook without compromising other devices.
In the mean-time please post your experiences, either here or in the PageTurner forums or Github page... especially if something doesn't work right or crashes the app, I'd like the hear it.

Hi NightWhistler,
For my part I've been using PageTurner on my NST daily with no crashes. I'm loving being able to read on my Nook and seamlessly switch to my phone. Battery life seems very good also, even with the wifi left on.
I have some commits for the comments you gave me on github, I just want to test them a tiny bit more and then I'll push them.
I did change my font from Gentium Book Basic to Droid, I got eyestrain reading on my Nook with Gentium. It might just be me, or it might be the sub-par font rendering on e-ink displays (Android libskia still has anti-aliasing enabled but the screen doesn't render it well.) My eyes are fine with Droid, and I still use Gentium on my phone!.
I noticed one weird thing, which is PageTurner seemed to forget my (local, not synced) book position one time. I noticed because I opened the book on a tram so I didn't have wifi available to do a networked sync. I'll try to reproduce this and let you know, I don't think it's Nook related.
Great e-reader in general. I'm looking into the possibility of making an update that removes everything from my Nook apart from it (because I don't really use it for anything else.) It's not really necessary though, works fine for me now.
Cheers,
Angus
Have posted a second test build, incorporates Alex's latest changes and should fix the bug I mentioned above (PageTurner Nook sometimes forgetting where you were up to if the sync server was unavailable.)

Commits also pushed to github. Comments & bug reports from NST users very welcome.
Just installed on my nst. Unfortunately I need an access key to test the sync feature.
I'll try it for awhile and see how it does before deciding...
Thanks for paying attention to NST users though!
Hmm, I can imagine that you'd like to test the sync feature before deciding if it's worth paying for.
On Google Play you can do that by using the ad-supported version, but there is no ad-supported version of the dev build yet.
Here's the alternative though: you can e-mail me at [email protected] and I'll send you a trial key for free that expires after a week.
If more people are interested in this I can set up something more formal / automated for it.

Sure, smart thinking
I've formalized it a bit now, all the temp keys have an automatic lifetime of 30 days... that should give you enough time to try it out.
I would like to ask that you grab the APK file from the beta folder on the site. There's a link at the top of my dev blog (I'm not allowed to post links here).
That's the beta build I'm currently testing... it should be pretty stable, but I want to get as many bugs out as I can before putting it in the Google Play Market.
Thanks for the app it works really well, syncing on my phone tablet and nook simple touch. Is there a way of changing it so the screen updates fully every six page turns as in stock nook app.

I don't own a Nook myself right now (any pointers on webstores that will ship one to the Netherlands are very welcome!), so I can't really implement that behaviour at the moment.
If someone can send me a patch for it I'll gladly accept it
A new NST on eBay goes for about £55 including postage to you.
There is a post in android development regarding a custom kernel and fast mode there may be some info that is useful to you there.

[Q] about the new Amazon Instant Video app

When the HD comes out, could somebody rip the Amazon Instant Video app apk and post it on xda?
The reason: Old app only works on Gingerbread. The new one should work on ICS and JB because the new Kindle Fire's OS is based on ICS.
Was just about to post a thread over here, we has one going on the old KF forums. ES File Explorer is on the Amazon market and should be able to read the /system/app directory without root. Really hoping this apk works on other ICS/JB devices.
An update bin file was posted and I grabbed the apk file from that. So far no luck, it FCs on my Touchpad with CM9. I tried installing as a regular app making sure Voodoo had me unrooted. I also tried as a system apk and rebooted, still FCs. It refuses to install on GB so I imagine its using API Level 15.
Hopefully it just needs another apk installed, Ill play around with it and see if I can get it working.
EDIT: I installed aLogcat to see if I could narrow down what is causing the FC. Its looking for the class "amazon.unifiedsettings.UnifiedSettingsHelper" which doesn't exist. Later in the log the FC is caused by a fatal exception with the class "amazon/unifiedsettings/UnidifedSettingsHelper" not being found. Is this a lib file or a system apk it wants?
EDIT2: I gave up on it for now. I tried some lib files, tried installing as many apks as I could (didn't try replacing system apks). It still FCs with the same error log and I can't find any files that reference unified settings. I also downloaded the Kindle Fire 2 update file (the updated original fire) and its using the same APK. LCD Density for the HD is 240 and 160 for the regular Fire 2. I use 160 on my Touchpad so that shouldn't be the issue.
How does one get apks out of Amazon's .bins?
com.amazon.dcp.apk
MyAccount-unsigned.apk
AccountAndSyncSettings.apk
These are the three extra apks (in addition to video apk itself) I needed to get it running on my Nook Tablet back in the day. I noticed back then that it seemed to work a little different for everyone. Some folks didn't need any of those while others of us experienced all manner of crashing without some of them. Sadly, one also forced my NT to appear as a KF in the Amazon app store, which made some of my purchased apps incompatible. Caveat emptor.
Would love to see those posted though if someone gets around to it. Would also love to see Amazon get their rear in gear and release a prime streaming app for android that didn't require all the fuss.
The bin files open for me in WinRAR, I think they are just zip files. AccountAndSyncSettings.apk is gone from the new Kindle Fires, the other two files are still there. I remember using those 3 files before allowed you to add an Amazon account and then open the app and you would already be logged in. With the new 2 files, it FCs in settings when I try to add an Amazon account. I didn't try using the old GB apks, it may be worth a try as they allowed an Amazon account to be added even on ICS.
I'll upload them, there is only 2 now, because you may have a different outcome than me on a different device.
No luck on a simple side load to an Acer A700 or an Acer A100 both stock and unrooted running ICS. I am reluctant to try the other apk's because I also had my a100 appear as a kindle fire and had to restore it to get use of my apps that were not kindle compatible.
I was messing around on my Touchpad with CWM so I always have the option to restore a nandroid if I were to screw something up. But I played around with it a lot this morning and didn't do any damage, everything was FCing.
No luck on Nexus 7. Tried after installing all three apk.

I too am looking to stream amazon on my cm9_tp but did not see anyone mention the fact it works perfectly on WebOs.

I will work through a flash capable browser with a desktop user agent in Android as well, but its not optimized very well for mobile devices. The app is much nicer when it works. At this point we may be better off trying to get the GB version working in ICS since it will at least open and let you browse.
In addition to a better UI in the app, I've also experienced intermittent, albeit minor, audio sync issues with mobile flash that I never had in the app. I hate that.
can someone with a kindle fire hd open up the app and then post the log? Wouldn't we be able to see where the unifiedsettingshelper file was with the log of it opening successfully?
Any update on this?

We need a Fire HD user or somebody with more knowledge of how things work to figure out where we can get "amazon.unifiedsettings.UnifiedSettingsHelper" from. This is the missing service it crashes on. I can't find any lib files or apks from the ROM that fix this issue. Also even if we get past this crash error another one may appear. At this point I'm thinking we may be better off trying to get the old GB app working since it seems to have fewer issues. It allows you to open and browse to videos on ICS, also allows you to add your Amazon account to the device, but crashes when you go to play a video. Its having a database issue according to the crash log posted over in the GB thread:

could amazon.unifiedsettings.UnifiedSettingsHelper be part of one of the odex files in system/app ?
It will be fantastic once this can be resolved. I hate that they are allowing this on iOS but not on other android devices.
Yes, it is absurd that iPad has access and general android devices are SOL. We purchased our content...and can't watch it reliably (app access). I would encourage everyone to let amazon know this is unacceptable - and I'm hopeful the good people here find a fix for us in the mean time.

I tried giving Amazon some feedback on supporting other Android devices - they didn't seem to care much. I guess they want to sell more Fires, but if they're selling them at a loss wouldn't they make more profit by supporting their app on other devices?
Our how about, I purchased my kindle to read, purchased a tablet before the fire was a gleam in their eye.
I purchase video content and have limited access to it, so i won't purchase future content with amazon as a result.
No I won't buy a fire and I am encouraged to buy my future content through Google play on top of that!
Loss, loss, and more loss for Amazon. Doesn't make sense.
Sorry for side tracking the thread, I will end the QQ

Yup. Of course they aren't going to listen to any one complaint, but Amazon is a pretty responsive company on the whole. Squeak enough and they'll grease the wheels. There's no indication they want to make this fire-only, given how many other devices its on, it's just a question of priority. You can bet the apple people whined more than the android people, so if you want them to get it in gear get on their contact page and make the request. I've done it repeatedly, but we need more people to get noticed.
