So I got my phone last December and within a month, had it rooted - mainly to get rid of bloatware. I was using Cognition ROM at first, but then a guy at an ATT authorized retailer showed me a different rom that unlocked HSPA. The ROM that he gave me, which I later installed using ROM manager has the filename: KILLER23D+XXJPUDoc_V4.0_wipe. Has there been an update to this ROM? I love everything about it and am also wondering if there are any ROMs that are any better than this? I'm still pretty new at using the xda website and forums...
I like to tinker around, but am still afraid of bricking my phone. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys for all the hard work you all do.
p.s. I noticed my phone now thinks it is the Galaxy S GT-I9000... so would I download new ROMs for that phone or the Captivate?
Killer23d's out off date. it hasn't been updated since 11th December 2010. Their are many great 2.2 and 2.3 roms in the development section. Take a look around , you should be able to find one that is to your pleasing. Read the authors instructions and be sure you understand them before you flash anything
Be sure to read the Stickies they tell you about installing rom and other good stuff that you should know. And search around if you have any questions before you post, cause it might have been already answered.
And if you have a captivate you download captivate roms
good luck
I guess I really want to know which ROM is most like official 2.2 or 2.3? I definitely want to make sure I can still install unknown apps, and have the stock alarm clock on the phone because I use the alarm all the time and I don't want to have to download another one from the market. Do you have any preferences on ROMs that would do all this?
I also am a little confused on the ODIN stuff. Since I'm already rooted and using ROM Manager to flash ROMs, do I always need to flash ODIN before installing a new ROM? I read on here somewhere that the author metioned something about that, but how it was worded was a little confusing
I don't refer roms to people it is all personal choice. All roms can install off market apps
for roms in general* http:////forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
*2.3 roms need gb bootloaders

So here is the deal. I have searched these forums for a while and can't find what I really need. What I need is the most stable ROM available that has all of the features of the phone in proper working condition.
I have enjoyed using experimental ROMs with RAM hacks and the like but I am selling my G1 to somebody else. I need to find a ROM that doesn't have any issues with blue tooth, 3D, or playing video and youtube.
I apologize for creating a whole new thread for this but I have searched the forums and the only versions that I can find have some substantial known issues.
So what Android ROM should I download and flash? Thank you to anybody who can help.
if you're selling the phone, keep it simple. A stock donut rom ought to be just fine. Or hell, unroot it.

Unroot it. That way the new user will be able to get the support and updates they need.
If you dont want to unroot it, then this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538456
I'm currently running SUnAaBh.v.1.1 and my phone is rooted.
Where can I get the latest official HTC ROM and how do I apply it on a rooted phone? I noticed that in the directories of shipped-roms.com there is Buzz and a few WWE selections but they were pre-dated before 2.2 release so I wasn't too sure about them.
Please Advise.
I strongly suggest remain rooted. If you install something from shipped-roms, you will lose root. See wildpuzzle thread if danne cooks a rom based on a newer ota.
I always manage to get problems with cooked ROMs :S
Performance or usability issues or otherwise which is why I'm looking for an official ROM. The only problem I have with my current branded ROM is all the useless applications which are unremovable. They only lead to links to the carriers websites for other useless crap.
I don't really care about Root, I haven't personally found much use for it.
If you are sure you dont require root anymore, get the RUU from here:

Thank you 3xeno. Sorry if I seem lazy/stupid I just did not think any of this was available in the development section, I thought it was all cooked ROMS :S. I just installed the rooted version of this and it seems to be working okay.
Well what are some of the big advantages of Root? I've been advised by a friend not to unroot as well, so I'm taking this into consideration and hearing what you guys have to say.
My buddy just got a captivate from AT&T, I want to help him get 2.2. I have played with several 2.2 roms but I need advice for him? He wants flash so I want to help him out. He is not worried about bleeding edge or speed.
What would be the most stable 2.2 rom I should put on a nontechie's captivate?
Thanks
Prepare to be scolded for posting in the wrong section
Before you think about roms make sure your friend knows how to recovery from issues
There are several stable 2.2 roms to choose from and which is best is a matter of opinion, and comfort

I'm assuming you're too lazy to read through every single post, so I'll redirect to another site where you won't have to read through so much techno-jargon.
If you're not on the bleeding edge, then please do your research here: http://www.samsungcaptivateforum.com/custom-roms/ and look especially at the custom rom review, as people have clearly laid out the pros and cons of each ROM, and then come here to pick your ROM.

Cezar's JPY if you want stock with some decent addon options
DesignGears's Perception 10 if you want everything to "just work" and smoothly
Darkyy's 7.8 (or 8.0 once that's ported) if you want a themed version of JPY
now: wrong section, /thread
I'm sure some people won't be too happy about this thread
Most of the JPX/JPY-based ROMs are fast and stable. I haven't tried many of them, but I find Darky's to be the fastest and most flash-looking, whereas I found Cezar's to have the best battery life. Also, after installing a ROM, you may want to experiment with different kernels for different performance, tweaks, and battery life. Once you choose and install a ROM, most people here will be happy to help you work out any issues you might have.
Also, take note that if the Captivate is batch 1008 through 1010 (you can look under the battery to find the batch number), you will NOT be able to Odin one-click or revert to JF6 stock using any method, and you'll be limited to only installing JH3-based or later ROMs once you've installed a 2.2 or 2.2.1 or later ROM.

I know that there is going to be hell for this thread, but I will give you my 2 cents.
Check this ROM out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890429
It is by far the best and most stable i have used to date.
quickly before I'm flamed for posting......my thoughts on everyone's complaint about posts being in the wrong place.....if you don't want n00bs posting in the developement section, then you need to remove the stuff they want. Post up comparison threads and "it's live" threads somewhere else. leave this place for developers. Make it so noone but developers have any idea what is going on. As long as this board is the place to come to for ROMs, you will continue to see posts like this. Or in a perfect world everyone would just flat out ignore any post in the wrong place.
I am now prepared for my whippin'......
A friend of mine asked me to root his phone for him. I personally have a rooted and ROM'ed Samsung Epic so this is not exactly new to me. My first question is what is the best way to root and ROM this phone? After searching around my head is spinning a bit about this. For my Epic I was able to do a one click root that also installed CWM. After that I was able to use Clockwork to flash new ROM's and kernels.Second the reason he gave me for wanting to root was to be able to have WiFi tethering. Am I going to need to install a custom ROM for his phone or is there an app that will give him this feature once we have his phone rooted? Thanks in advance for all of the help!
Quickest, basic answer...
For Root... [APP]SuperOneClick v2.3.2
For the tethering question, he will have to check out a Rom that offers it as one of the options (most do). Don't ask what Rom is recommended, he will have to make the choice depending on his preferences to the specifics offered in a Rom. There are plenty of choices here... Captivate Android Development
Your right about the ROM so I removed the question. I guess I was looking for some recommended ROM's that were stable and everything worked. Thanks!
Hello,
I would like to try flashing my rogers captivate to ICS. Nothing fancy just a astable bug free ICS. However I am on 2.3.3. I updated through KIES a while back and now I have no idea how to root my phone or install roms. I am afraid the last time I looked into this everything was very different. I have read the forums but am still a little anxious.
Is it possible to root and then install CWM or something to install roms from my current 2.3.3 version? If so how may I do it?
Any help is greatly appreciated
Christopher
By reading all the stickies and reading some more info, you will be a genius at this stuff by the time you're done...
Yeah thats what I am kinda trying to avoid. I have to hack and read so much already it gets really tiring having to keep up with it all. Add to this work and school and its like info overload. I was hoping there might be an easier way than earning another mini phone phD. Thus far I have determined I have to change my kernel... I think? My phone is unrooted. Stock 2.1 to 2.3.3 KIES.
This Site is mentioned for developing. That being said for the rest of us, we are supposed to learn. The reason it's important to read and understand is you can potentially kill your phone.
