my sprint htc hero needs a new motherboard only because the usb is completely damaged from the outside only. It is rooted. Once the new motherboard is in, will I still have root? what should I expect when I turn the phone on for the first time?

You can replace a motherboard but can't handle root?
replacing the motherbord shouldnt affect the actual software so yes im pretty sure you will still be rooted.
to be honest though i would just get a new phone because i know motheboards arnt cheap.
well, I did get a new phone a while ago. got the evo 4g. but this hero just keeps bugging me, so kind of more for fun, I want to give this a go. I already ordered the motherboard on ebay. 30 bucks plus shipping. I saw a video on youtube and replacing it looks fairly simple. It is going to take a couple of weeks for it to get here, but will post back and let you know how it turns out.

No, you will need to root again. The android software is stored of the motherboard. So putting in a new one will be like getting a new phone, minus new parts on the outside.
If the motherboard you bought is used, then whatever the previous user had on it, then that's what you would find. Hope this helps.

ha proved me wrong lol. either way rooting shouldnt be a problem just z4 that bad boy and itll be up and running in no time
ah, that makes sense now. well it is a new motherboard. found two sellers on ebay both of which have a small supply for 30 bucks each. okay so I start over once I have it. many thanks
I know it has been a while, but just to finalize, got this hero working like a charm. changing the mother board was the easy part. the trick was finding the right sprint store that would get msl code and make everything match up between the new mother board and the phone. they have to actually change codes in their data base or you will not get service.
Damn, you should have asked -- I have a couple extra heroes from friends who move on.
wow, thanks. You know it was one of those things that you brake and get some redemption when you fix it.

Hey guys, i have a huge problem with my tilt, it is driving me crazy. My keyboard is acting crazy. When i press some keys it will give me a double key, like if i press i or o it will write io, and i know that they are close together and that mite be the problem but sometime if i press R it writes ri or ro, its really only with these 3 keys. I was wondering if anyone out there had this problem (funny i had this problem with the phone i had this replaced with the p990i) and how to solve it. i really hope its not a hardware problem cuz i bougth the damn phone from someone on ebay, brand new.
please help, i have the htc rom installed, sleuth 1.0. thanks guys, i appreciate it alot
I had the same problem. It is a bad keyboard membrane. You will need to replace the membrane or send it in for repair. I had att replace me.
great. i dont have att so that means that i will have to sent it to htc right?
damn i never get anything good on ebay (and i keep telling myself that it will be the last time i buy something from ebay). I mean the damn phone was new.
So can i contact htc and send it to them and will they replace it for free? cuz sure att isnt since i have no account with them.

If you bought it BRAND new, sure!! Forget the bull**** on HTC's website about proof of purchase. The Ebay receipt print off is good enough or your cred card statement for the purchase (erase the rest for anything else!!! ). Just as anywhere else, DON'T take no for an answer.
yeah, im not gonna get no for an answer for sure. i paid good money for this. I think i am gonna get my friend to send it to att so i can get a replacement right away, now i gotta flash it back to att crap rom and hope my friend is up to, i heard htc takes its time to get things done and that would mean no phone for 1 month. damn this sucks, thx for the support guys.

Check this place out first, they deliver anywhere,
http://cnn.cn/shop/8925-tilt-kaiser-c-277_448.html
Found on a 'Bork'?? thread here.
do you by any chance have htc keyboard+keypad installed?
try uninstalling if you have it in there.
seriously? now peoples keyboards are F'ing up? damn.. what is next
I've already gone through so many I've lost count. Frys Electronics is getting tired of me coming into their store every other day with another problem on a new Tilt, lol
First it was the side scroll wheel, it didn't even work
Second was the usb port, it was so tight that when I went to take the usb charger off it, it pulled the usb port out some with it.
Third and most recent was a dead pixel and a slider that closed too far.
Do I just have bad luck? lol
dont have anything installed, just did a hard reset so no progs installed. it looks like its screwed up and how lucky it is exaclty the sam prob as my p990i (which i thought was software problem) but its not.
I just bought an 8925 a couple of weeks ago (about a year used) and it was working fine...Best phone I've had so far...Yesterday I'm sitting in my car, I start the TT software and drive off. As I'm driving off I plug the phone into the car charger and pouf! Phone just blacks out. No lights no nothing. I tried to plug the phone into a wall charger, data cable, car charger, nothing. No light, no sign of life at all...
I also had just purchased a new battery for it, tried it and still the same, nothing at all....Suggestions ???????? PLEASE !!!!!!
What kind of car charger do you have? There are reports that if you use a cheap, generic charger it may fry your phone.

THIS ONE. If it is fried, what can I do ? I mean, I'm sure I can't do much about the phone itself but can I maybe go after CellularAccessory.com ???
Good luck...
It's indeed highly recommended to only use HTC car chargers, there have been many reports of similar cases.
I dont think you are gona have much luck trying to go after the place you bought the charger from they usually have disclaimers about damage caused by anything they sell. If the phone truely is dead and going on your description you have probably fried components on the board, is to try claming on your household contents insurance just say it went pop when you plugged it in at home using your htc charger. Failing that if your phone is still under waranty then try the place you bought it from. DONT say you used a non branded charger though or you are screwed lol. Good Luck.
Charger
Damn, paid $3.95 for a multipurpose car charger and it fried your Tilt. I can't imagine that. I'd be p*ssed.
take it to att and see if its still in warranty and get a new one..if its out of waranty then call htc in usa and it should still be covered (manufactures warranty is 15 months). Htc devices are the most knoqwn swapped out phones with warranty exchanges..its very simple..ive exchanged my tilt 4 times now. I dont even break a sweat if something even SEEMS wrong..i used to freak out and try to fix things myself but i eneded up doing more damage than needed and luckily att is so nice and understanding..i just emediately take it in and get a new one now..even if something doesnt feel right..if need be i throw it in boot loader mode and say it wont boot.
It probably should be noted that nobody is suggesting you defraud HTC or AT&T on an open forum, especially senior members. Since your device is regulated by the FCC and it would probably make it a Federal offense, I think I would stick to the basics in any discussions with everyone. If they don't ask, fine, If they do ask then use your own judgment.

I will definately try that, but my only concern is that it's an unlocked att phone that I'm using in Montreal, Canada...Should I go to HTC Canada or USA???
Just tried calling HTC North America (the # that's on their website (425) 679-5318) and it just answers but with no sound at all..It's like if someone picks up the phone but it's just muted....I waited around 3 minutes thinking someone would probably end up answering, but no...
just take it into an att device support center (look on there site or call them) and just tell them it wont turn on..its not defrauding them its honest..as ling as its not PHYSICALLY DAMAGED (as in mving parts were damaged by dropping or mishandling) or WATER DAMAGED (as in the white square on the back is pink) then your good..This happened to me the frst time..i left it on a charge all night and next morning it wouldnt charge nor turn on and att took it with ease.
Wow, a three dollar car charger that is multipurpose for a several hundred dollar device.....the real question is...why? Before you ever plug anything into an electronic device please, please check the output voltage and amperage, a lesson to all.
Ok I was finally able to reach the repair dept. at HTC. They told me the phone is still under warranty so I sent it to their repair center in Indianapolis in the hopes they will be able to exchange it...
I do believe the phone is completely fried, but is there a way for them to still detect what caused it to fry ? Also, they told me that any third-party application they find on the phone voids the warranty, will they be able to see what was installed on the phone ??

If the phone is fryed I doubt they will be able to get it working thus they wont be able to see whats been installed on it and anything could have fryed it such as a power surge while it was plugged in at home. Just wait and see i guess.
once they take it apart they will be able to figure out the problem. sometimes not easy .

Where do you get facts like that, I though nokias were the most swapped.. Is there a website that has these stats?
Either way, good luck on that exchange.

I cracked my screen so I decided to order a new one and fix it myself, while in the process I accidentally tore the top flex circuit board and now I can't find spare parts other than screens anywhere. Does anyone know where I can get some or have one that is broken I am willing to pay ...
Hate when **** like that happens. . . try to fix something and something doesn't go right.
Not sure where you can get the parts you're looking for, but wanted to give props to you for taking the initiative to try and fix it yourself. Alot of people will be like "that's what you get for not just sending it back to HTC and having them fix it." How're you going to appreciate the intricacies of something if you don't take the occasional risk like this?
Hope you find what you're looking for.
Ps. Have you looked at http://www.monoprice.com/home/index.asp to see if there's anything you could repurpose to work?
Ha yea, I am definitely a DIY-er. Unfortunately this is a risk I knew I was taking heading into it, wasn't too worried though because I have fixed a lot of cell phones in the past, just got a little too careless with prying open with a flat head screw driver, it slipped and cut right into the flex circuit board. Should have been a little more careful haha. New screen looks great though! Now only if I could get it to power on! Of course HTC tells me it will cost up to $300 to send it to them to fix it.

Not sure exactly, but is this what you are looking for? http://cnn.cn/shop/google-nexus-digitizer-p-8252.html
Yea I tried that number and also that lunacommerce site is located in China, no prices on their website, no way to purchase anything other than contacting them first (which I have tried to no avail...). You would think some online store somewhere would have started selling spare refurbished parts. Whatever, guess I will have to pay HTC to fix it, kinda sucky.
If you find somewhere that can help you, please post back. I just had a similar experience, replaced the digitizer and the display wouldn't work afterwards. Figured I had damaged the AMOLED, so purchased another. Problem still persisted.
I've decided that I must have damaged the AMOLED connector on the logic board.
The upside is I can still use the phone when connected to a PC and using Android Screen Monitor.
So now I've ordered another Nexus One, I find it hard to get by without my daily Android.... it became an expensive drop of the phone.

No that is what I replaced in the first place. I am looking for the Logic Board. I will keep searching and update this thread if I ever figure it out. Going on 3 days without a phone and only being able to use Google Voice via my computer is starting to drive me insane!
So... long story short, I bricked my Nexus One. There is no LED while charging and the phone doesn't boot. I figured if I replace the motherboard, the phone will start functioning again.
From my understanding, HTC charges $196 to replace this piece, which is quite expensive considering I paid $175 for this Nexus. But I found a part on eBay which I think is the motherboard, but I want to make sure before I purchase it.

I would appreciate if anybody can confirm that this is the motherboard and if it will resurrect my phone.

Do you know where I can source the motherboard?
I might try buzzing HTC tomorrow for a warranty repair (or swap) for a different issue with the phone. Maybe I can escalate it to the proper person if they give me any problems.
I have searched almost everywhere for it; and it's nowhere to be found.
My options remain:
1) Hope HTC replaces my Nexus for another issue
2) Have HTC replace my motherboard for $196
3) Replace it myself, assuming I can source one
4) JTAG it back to life
5) Sell it in its current state
Do you mind sharing the story of how you bricked it? I'm really interested.
google a method to un brick it. One hacker actually did that already. It might help you.

I unrooted the phone and started proceeding with the respective steps. I just flashed CW recovery and was using it to flash gapps, CM, and a radio image. I then rebooted the phone, but it never turned on.
Now, I have a beautiful non-functioning Nexus One! Does not boot at all, no LED when hooking up to A/C, nothing...

Well I read the article long ago and don't remember exactly what the name of it is. But one hacker used his usb cable to trick his nexus one to wake up and it was successful.

Update: I called HTC and mentioned a completely unrelated issue, which was a small speck of dust under the screen. I chose the swap option and didn't mention the phone didn't turn on, or was bricked. I just checked the tracking update and it says "service is completed." Checked my card; nothing was charged.
GO HTC! They are the absolute best!
u probably bricked it with the radio update.. did you check the MD5 checksum before u flashed it? And was it even a proper Radio?
You need to be very careful while flashing a radio... it's like flashing a BIOS on a PC.
You should flash it through fastboot and not recovery, it's safer.
Just so you know when you try to do it again.

Ive had my Hero 2 months after it was released. As hero users know paint on the front casing chips, so I just "scratched" it away. It also randomly turns off and it freezes up.
2 months after the Evo came out I bought it brand new from craigslist. So i didnt even remember where my hero was, until i found it today.
My question is in the condition that its in, can I still take it to sprint so they can either fix or replace it? and in the picture attached does that red seal indicate water damage?
yes i have sprints insurance and the phone isnt in bad conditions (cosmetic), the evo just takes pretty good pics... lol
thanks in advance.
Doubt it, they rarely fix the casing, unless something else is wrong and swap out the device...
And in that condition, they may pull a "Its due to physical dmg" and won't fix it.

yea sprints warranties are software based maybe if u brick it and say its the battery they might take it back lol.
