There should be a thread for this in every phone section.. For those who have recently changed from the infamous sense to the Vanilla Gingerbread Experience ie. CM7, how do you find the battery life. Better or worse? And if there are any kernels that you find give it much more juice in a charge please list below. I find that after my CM7 'upgrade' without any kernel changes that I am getting much better life in a day.

I guess there isn't that many CM7 users yet.

It's the main reason I want to s-off my cell phone right now. Battery life is next to nothing with Sense.
If it weren't for Android 2.3.3., we would all be using rooted Incredible S's.
Actually there are quite a few CM7 users now, if the download stats are to be believed.
Just a minor point: CM7 is not 'vanilla' Android at all, it has quite a lot of extra features, tweaks and customisations compared to the base Android system.
I'm in a dilemma right now.
I got my Incredible S a few days ago and everything works fine. After a bit of reading, I figured I was lucky to have the 2.2.1 version of the phone since it would allow me to either S-Off it or upgrade to Gingerbread.
Sense is fine and all, but I'm thinking of rooting the phone to be able to install custom roms in order to get better performance and more customization options. I'm mostly wondering how 2.3 with sense runs on the Incredible S compared to 2.2 with sense.
So root or go gingerbread with sense, which is the best thing to do?
Im using CM7 RC1 - have been since i s-off'd my IncS about 3-4months ago
cm7 on here has been clean, with no major issues - battery life for me has been great, im quite a heavy user, listen to alot of music, always tweeting or on facebook.
for me it lasts the whole day and feels to be better than when i was on stock sense.
Sense had too much other stuff running whilst i was "playing about" and would drain the battery alot quicker.
For me CM7 is the ideal rom for this phone, ive tried others but always came back to CM7

Simple. Root and then install a ROM that's based on the official Gingerbread update... you can have it all!

Just don't upgrade OTA to the official 2.30.405.1.
Read more here.
i've always found that sense was waay too much, i mean too much comes out of the box.
For me battery in CM7 works a bit longer then it stock, but in revolution hd + nosense script battery works even longer.
Also another reason I like it so much if because its using android almost the way it was supposed top be used.. Not with all of the bloatware and stuff
Swyped from my HTC Incredible S
I tried sense for a few days and it lasted about 23 hours on average. I installed Cyanogenmod7 just now, I'll come back with an update!
Am on Android Revolution HD after rooting and the battery life is better compared to the stock HTC 2.2 or 2.3 ROM. I have the Sense 3.0 addon installed with ARHD - a full charge usually lasts me 1.5days with moderate usage.
I think i'm gonna try ARHD with no sense script and see how it lasts..
MODS/ADMINS: Can you please change the title of this thread to "Comparing ROM Battery Life" or something of the genre.
Much appreciated.
I've been using Cyanogenmod7 for a few days now and I can't say that I've noticed any significant differences with Sense.

not gonna happen, we are waiting for another phone comparable with the hero to get it then it can be ported. on another note rumor has it sprint will be releasing another hero update in october. keep your fingers crossed that it could be froyo.
This may sound dumb...but what more could happen if the hero gets froyo since we already have it anyway?

Right now Hero users have to choose between 2.2 without Sense, or 2.1 with Sense. A lot of people would like 2.2 with Sense.

2 months ago I was saying the same thing. Been running CM6 since day 1 and got sense deprived for 2 days. Flashed CM6 back and found some alternatives to the sense look. Now I could care less about sense and any official update. IMHO, my phone runs better, faster and actually looks better without sense. The only good thing that would come of it would be to fix the very few issues that are left in the froyo ROM.

I would only start using a 2.2 Sense ROM if it had the speed and options like CyanogenMOD has... which will never happen. So I guess I'll never use a 2.2 Sense ROM.
Everyone needs to just ignore fixxer. I don't think a 2.2 sense rom on our phone will be better or faster than CM6.
I find zenrom and NFX-hero to be the same if not faster than our 2.2 rom. Plus it's sense which means it just looks a billion times better than aosp, plus our phones were meant to have sense on it so naturally the battery life will be a whole lot better. And then you throw froyo in it and get one of our devs to spruce it up then we got ourselves a mini evo. Why have a rom that looks worse no matter what you do to it and gets worse battey life and download 100 different things to make it look kind of like sense and get somewhat better battery life when you can have the real thing? I'm not trying to start a flame war, just throwing in my 2 bills.

Out of Every sense rom and aosp rom I've gotten a minimum of 6 hours more battery life out of the sense roms. I'm not saying aosp is slow either, but with the new zenrom and nfx-hero, sense is just as fast if not faster than our 2.2 aosp rom. And yes...that's a fact! The only thing that is a little slow on the sense roms is the messaging app. Aosp has always been great for me at the beginning, but after a few days it just gets slowed down for no reason. And I only have like 7 apps that I downloaded. Aosp is plain, sense has style! Sense will always no matter what look better than plain ol aosp.......

Well...alrighty then. It sounds like you had a set up issue on your phone because out of my 4 Hero's..the way mine is set up now it flat out runs the stock sense rom's that I have here and has more gas at the end of the day, and everything turned on that I have to have turned off on the stock roms if I expect more than 8 hours of battery life. I haven't tried either of the other 2 roms you are talking about yet,but I might just to see if your just blowing smoke which I believe you are..since you still haven't validated any of you facts opinions yet..

I agree that zenrom and nfx-hero are light-years faster than the stock 2.1 sense rom. I'd even venture to say that its as fast as 2.1 sense can get, its pretty damn snappy. But I hope when you say its faster than CM6, you aren't talking something quantitatively ... because frankly, the statistics don't back up that claim.
And you're right, regular AOSP is plain and boring. The reason it's like that is to start with as clean a slate as possible, and let you theme and mod to the nth degree. You can do the same thing with Sense, but not as easily, and it will never be as lightweight because of the extra HTC apps. Some phones can handle the extra weight, some can't. I guess it comes down to if you want to work to make your Hero uniquely beautiful, or commonly pallatable.
I respect your own opinion (my wife is a Sense lover, so I have this debate constantly, and respect the other side), however recognize the difference between facts and opinions, please. If you want to provide subjective "facts", please call them what FOX News calls them: truth.
I'll just say this, my phone with CM6 was not as fast as it is with Aloysius 2.1. I get higher mflops and quadrant scores with Aloysius. I also get about double the battery life. I think it all depends on the user. I am not saying sense is better, but in my phone (and the way I use it) the sense roms are faster and far less buggy. I like that I only have to flash one file and I am good to go. No flash rom, then gapps, then kernel, then battery tweak, then theme, etc, etc, etc.
I just think the Hero runs better with what it was intended to run. Thats my $0.02 anyways.
Even though Sense looks great compared to vanilla AOSP, visual appeal is not what I look for when comparing the two ROMS. I love how lightweight AOSP is, but wish it came with some of the awesome HTC widgets that are exlusive to Sense. To this day, the HTC keyboard, weather and calendar widgets, and a few other items have no equal in the FREE apps section of the Market.

I agree. I tried CM6 and barely noticed a speed difference. I noticed several features and customizations, but nothing special that I can't do on my 2.1 sense rom. Actually, froyo isn't even all that to me. The only thing I want from Froyo is the marking/vending, but other than that there's nothing special like everyone says. BTW, I'm also using Aloysius 2.1 with my own theme I created.
This is also my 2 cents. And I am in no way saying that Aloysius is better than CM6, just that 2.1 sense roms have more of what I prefer.

Yeah, because no one else in your house is using a rooted Hero with something like Zen-ROM on it..
I charged my phone today around 6 in the evening to 100%. It's now 5am and I STILL have over 70% battery life left, after using it pretty heavily with GMaps. CM6 never made it that far for me.
People can you recomend me a good froyo ROM? I would like it to have fair battery life, speed, stability, and good for day to day use. Give me what you think is best under these conditions thanks!

I would kinda like an answer to this question as well. I am going to be rooting my friends G1 and he would really like a 2.2 rom with good battery life. I am new to anything G1 so any help would be great. Note: I have experience rooting and installing custom rom's on my EVO. Thanks guys.
So far, BiffMod 2.0.1 has been the best Froyo ROM that I've tried out. It has stability, speed, and customization. There's like 5 themes to choose from, which I thought was cool. It also has all the unnecessary stuff taken out of it. I'd recommend trying it out.
Thanks for the suggestion Skate. I appreciate it. Ill have my friend try it out and see if he likes it.

is there a good guide for upgrading from CM 4.2 to Biffmod? I'm currently on radio 1.22.12.29, which seems to be a no-no in some guides I've seen around for any upgrade
sparksmod is good but its bad on battery life
tried searching around for cyanogen 4.2 biffmod 2.1 but all I get is a list of roms, is there a guide anybody knows of for doing the upgrade?
Been using this for awhile, never had any issues, decent battery life and has great speed. Search for [ROM][Beta][in-development] jMod 2.2/AOSP 2.2 - Android for the rest of us - 08/05/10 its no longer developed though.
@Wright. Make sure that you show your friend the ropes about flashing froyo. Running froyo isn't a easy task at all. I've tried all of them and they always end up with some issue. Try Biff for now its the most stable froyo rom to date.

Hey guys. I might be Rooting and flashing soon, and I'm looking for which ROM I should go for.
I was looking for one with good battery life (I use my phone for Music, Game's Etc.) and hopefully a ROM that has better battery life then stock.
I was also looking for one that had Sense 3.0.
Any chance such ROM exists? Any one tried a few Sense 3.0 Rom's and has had good battery life from one?
Thanks

Virtuous unity 2.35 does go good.... The sense 3.0 is just amaZIng! IF U WANT I'LL POST THE LINK HERE...
arhd is good too but then its over clocked to 1.5Ghz by default, so alot has complained for it doesn't boot up, stays in the HTC screen.
This ROM too gives u amazing performance but its mostly the users taste here...
And not to forget, Coredroid ROM... Man this ROM OS simply fantastic, I've used it before just because of the backlight issues removed it, the backlighta aka the 4 menu butons, doesn't work sadly.... But, there's gonna be an update soon, so yeaaaaaa! It's gonnna have sense 3 with the backlights fixed too...
Hope this helps....

well, as pointed out , the choice is very personal.
it depends on your preferences as there are some differences in most of the major roms.
so far i've tried ARHD, CM7, MIUI & Virtuous unity.
CM7 is quite good if you are interested in having a non-sense rom but the functionality, stability is top notch. CM7 has set a standard not just for stand alone developers but for corporate production as well.
ARHD is a very popular rom and most people using it will swear by it.
it is sense based, and it will feel like a charged up stock rom.
very professional as well.
MIUI is what i used the longest & i must admit it is a brilliant rom in the fact that it stands out in appearance & customization.
every app and every part of the system is beautified and it feels like a totally different phone. if you are looking to have a 'different' yet amazing phone, MIUI is the way to go.
but the major drawback with MIUI is that it is not officially supported for the INCs and thus there are some minimal bugs which can get a bit annoying.
And of course it has no app drawer, works like the iphone.
this can be handled by the wonderful app created by a member here called alt drawer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154299
i feel this is a must for MIUI.
finally, using VU at the moment and i feel it is a perfect blend of sense components and that little something extra.
looks, feels and works amazingly well, minimal bugs and almost feels like the perfect rom again...
i did however run into a few loop boots recently, but i think that can be worked on.
that's my personal opinion on all the roms...
and i think it would be a good opportunity to give a heartfelt 'thank you' for all the developers here working so damn hard on providing world class roms for us.

The great thing about rooting and flashing is that you can create a back up and from there flash everything possible until you find what your looking for. One thing to remember is that you cannot kill your phone flashing new roms as they do not change your BIOS.
Thanks for all your replies guys - does anyone have a link to ARHD?
Sounds quite good
EDIT: ARHD Isn't full Sense 3.0, might leave that one... is Virtuous Unity a good one to go with then? (No bugs, good battery etc.)

Thanks Nabeeltanz for quoting my post
well, to add to the above post, i have personally experienced MIUI to have the longest battery life among all the ROMS.
My usage is quite heavy, 3g on all day, regular surfing with streaming of music for most part, a little gaming here and there, emailing and of course the messaging and calls. most of the ROMS i've used lasted me a full day.. MIUI did a little more.. consistently it would last for close to 2 days. it would definitely need recharging by the end of the second day..
but compared to the stock rom, all the custom roms do provide good enough battery life.

Cm7 nightly with tiamat 1.14 has been hands down the best imo.

I've also tried pretty much every ROM on here and its by far the best. I've had 2.5 days with standard use on one charge.
+1 for cm7n and tiamat
Just so say, I'm using Virtuous Unity and it's been brilliant so far.
To all those guys that use CM7 Nightlies (Test Release) with timat 1.1.4 , just want to clarify with you guys that do you guys get crashes on it?
I downloaded the latest test release last night and flashed it after I flashed my ROM and I've got to say that I keep get crashes (com.android.phone process has ended) . So what is the ROM that I should flash? Is it the stable version or the test version.
and can I flash the kernel (timat 1.1.4) on my Virtuous Unity 2.3.9? So what is that is power saving? The kernel or the ROM or both together? (im confused)

I did a full wipe using ARHD 's (Super Wipe) and also using my Clockworkmod's wipe . I performed a NANdroid before flashing (of course im scared) . I had problems on the nightly ROM as I don't know why my Airplane mode keeps turning on by itself.
It will be great if you can help me by posting the exact link for the ROM you use and the kernel you used and even the recovery you used to wipe your entire ROM before flashing the new one ..
I'm still using VU 2.3.9 and I just realized that my battery life sux the previous time because I didnt flash the kernel of VU 2.3.9 (LOL) . I just flashed it and I'm currently letting it run to see how well is the battery.
as smartphone users, most of our main concern is the battery usage.. I would very much like to use CyanogenMod 7 Nightlies but just that I have second thoughts about it because it didnt have the "Quick Settings" or HTC keyboard that I was using on my VU . and I can't find and nice framework which is suitable..
so i guess if you could help me on this issue. I'll really appreciate it .
Hey guys, I've been changing roms alot recently and was wanting one that's nice and fast and has decent battery life.At the moment I have ARHD as I hear quite alot of good thoughts of it, but I think it's pretty average. It's slow and choppy. I've tried a reflash and I got rid of everything on my SD (I knew it wouldn't work, but thought I'd give it a shot)
So yeah, thoughts? Preferably one which has a kernel which supports OC'ing. Needs to be fast and nice to use, thanks all
This should really have been posted in General!!!! But according to me, try Virtuous Infinity (Still in Alpha but every feature except WiFi Hotspot Works) or try CoolDroid Revolution S by SurajKumar. If you want to try Virtuous Infinity: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/30873-virtuous-infinity-v1300-alpha1-general/

Ice Cold Sandwich 8.3 - You will appreciate the potential and amazing-ness of Android since you have no Sense and its an AOKP/AOSP. Battery will last for 2 days minimum with v4 Kernel. I'd say try it out, you won't be disappointed...you'll find that Sense is a waste of space and battery.

Most of the times you can't record video, sometime it does but sometimes it record videos with strange lines.
I'll chip in with an opinion...
CM7.2 RC3!
I've been trying all the other roms that come out just for fun and some of them really are great but I can't help myself - I keep returning to CM7.2 after a week or so of each... It just works perfectly in every way, it's fast, stable and has a great battery life. Can't really ask for more. Second place is The Incredible 1.1 but that's not a surprise seeing as it is a mod of CM - the only thing not so great is the use of Launcher Pro instead of ADW but I guess that is down to personal choice.
Anyway, in the unlikely event of you not having tried CM7.2 I'd say fire it up

I read that a lot here.. that sense is a waste of battery but In my experience it has been the opposite. I had Ice Cold Sandwich for a few days and the battery life was terrible... Tried all the kernels with it...stock, tiamats, v3, v4 etc but no luck..changed radio to the latest but still the same battery drain problem... got frustrated so switched to sense with ARHD ..battery life way bettter..the best battery life i got was with NIK's trinity rom... but wanted ics so opted for arhd....

Don't know why you found battery life terrible...sometimes it's also a matter of what you like really...but once you try open Android you'll start fully appreciating it and start hating Sense from my experience...different people different opinions though.
The incredible 1.1: fully stable and using supercharger actually slows it down. It's lightning fast after install.
i too found that with the IceCold series up until 7.2/7.3 battery life was horrible. Sense roms seem to give a very good battery life lasting me well over a day. and i prefer the sense ui way better than stock aosp/aokp roms.
Well I'm back with ice cold and it is great! Haven't used it since 7.0 or somwthinf,... its just so much better compared to sense. Its faster and looks way nicer. Only thing is mms doesn't work. *sad face*

In IceCold 8.4 there's a solved MMS/SMS issue - at leat the one I had and I was one of the first people who experienced the problem in the first place. Plus if the automatic settings don't work out, the manual override is working without a glitch .... So it's fully working ROM for now but depends on how you install it/download it and other stuff.... It's all written in the thread but so far there's no other ROM that's as fast and as stable for me. Battery wise - I got through a full day of at least an hour talk time, browsing, WiFi moderate usage and I still have at least 50% when I get home. And my phone is on 3G/H mode all the time - on 2G/EDGE - it lasts two days :good: If that's bad you need Motorola Razr MAXX with the 3,3Ah battery

Dont get me wrong.... I love the openness and customizability of asop aokp roms. But right now they lack the stability that i desire.

My own choice, you should try WE_WANT_ICS_V3_By_Nikhil007. I used it for a long time, stable, fast, smooth,no FC or Auto Restart and good battery life. I upgraded to V4,but I'm back to V3 now. ^_^

Already tried it and it is great, seriously. That and playground are the best ICS roms I've tried but I still found myself back on CM7 after a week or so... Probably because of the reason below:

Apart from CM7.2! As it's GB based it is rock solid and everything works flawlessly. I use maps a lot and MMS too a bit and the compass works perfectly in maps and MMS is not an issue. No FCs, no compatibility issues (the earlier ICS roms seemed to be incompatible with some apps but that seems to be resolved completely now) and just no worries at all.
It'll be a different story once the devs get hold of the kernal source of course... once that happens I'll be grabbing CM9 so fast it'll get whiplash!
The only gripe i have with AOSP/AOKP is the camera.
It just cant churn out the same quality that the sense roms can
HTC Vivid, S-on, Unlocked boot loaded and rooted. Looking for a new ROM, Preferably ICS and De-sensed. Something light-weight, Easy on battery and RAM usage. Here is a small list of what I do with my phone:
- Music
- Facebook / Web browsing
- Texting. Alot of texting
- Camera / Video
- Calls
- Weather monitoring.
Other than that, Nothing. I don't use GPS, Or bar code scanning apps. I want a light-weight fast, stable ROM. Something that'll work with S-on preferably. It can be ICS or even JellyBean, Gingerbread depending.. but it must be De-sensed.
My advice is use the De-Sensed ROM found in the development thread. It's super small, completely de-sensed, has the CRT-OFF effect, and is pretty reliable.
As with any S-ON phone, you need to flash the kernel via fastboot, then install the ROM, then for good measure flash the kernel again. You'll also need either ClockWorkMod or TWRP recovery to flash custom ROMs.
There are dozens of threads on here which will help you install a ROM with S-ON, and help you through any issues you might have.
With that said, I'd be remiss if I didn't at least TRY to sway you into S-OFFing your phone. It makes life much easier. ROMs install in a single action with no fastboot needed. You can toss a ROM (or several) on your SD card, and go sit in the park with a bottle of wine and try new ROMS all day long.

The Marine Theme certainly doesn't make the phone look/act like it's been de-sensed... I love it myself, don't get me wrong. Holics 1.2 with Marine's theme has been my daily driver since it was released. Holics certainly isn't light weight either at 600MB, versus the 140ish MB of the De-Sensed ROM.
I personally found De-Sensed to be quite stable. I tried Virtrious too, and found that to be full of bugs, though maybe that was a few releases ago by now.
Desensed and virtuous were in fact pretty buggy. Holics made me want to bash my head into a wall. DarkRaider 1.5 is pretty spectacular though. It isn't desensed, but it's very stable and battery life is pretty good.

Is it bad to delete stock / pre-installed apps? Would that affect battery life? I'm currently using a Pure ICS ROM and I deleted some of the stock apps (Calendar, Calculator, etc) and I was wondering if that would have an affect on performance and battery life?
I really wish there was a port of CyanongenMod 9 or 10 for the vivid that would work on an s-on device.
Only reason I haven't s-off'd is because I am lost, confused and not sure what to do.

It depends. System apps can cause problems if you remove them. Miscellaneous stuff shouldn't matter, but only stuff that constantly runs would have any effect. The long and short of it is there's no real reason to delete them.
Just read the superguide, watch the videos and you'll be fine. Hundreds of us have done it without any problems. Just make sure you understand what you're doing. Also keep in mind that the s-off process voids your warranty if that's going to be an issue.

I've deleted stuff like the stock Browser, Stock download manager, Car home thing, The clock widget, Calendar, VPN Services, Stock gallery thing, Stuff like that. Space isn't an issue.. It's more of stuff running I don't want to run, or don't need wasting battery and RAM.
And the phone was bought second hand, So there isn't a warranty.

I think at one point I selected a "No sense" install on a ROM and it still had bits and pieces of the sense parts in it. Forget what ROM it was.
What's you guys and gals opinions on a de-sensed GB ROM? How would that be in terms of performance and battery life on my Vivid? I only like ICS for it's colour theme and that's it... And I highly doubt there are any JellyBean ports for it yet.
