I want to buy a tablet in the near future and I've been researching this for a while. I now have the following dilemma: Should I buy the SamsungGalaxy Tab P1000 or the Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101? The two tablets cost about the same here.
I would prefer the Galaxy Tab P1000 for it's smaller size and 3G capability, but I am willing to give this features up if the Eee Pad is better.
Which of the tablets should I buy and why?
Hey, I own a transformer. A buddy of mine owns a tab so I have played a lot with both products. They are both excellent products and I would be happy with either.
If you want my opinion though, you need to decide your form factor. Do you want a 7" that fits very nicely in pockets, or a 10" that has a bigger screen but really needs a bag or a sleeve to carry it around.
When you decide that, then you will find that comparing the tab and the transformer is really comparing apples and oranges. (think of buying a laptop, you dont generally compare 15" and 17" laptops. You decide if you want 15 or 17 and then compare the various models in that form factor).
My decision to go with the transformer is simple. Mine is an ultra-portable laptop replacement so the screen size and the keyboard dock were a must. My buddy's decision to go with the tab is because he doesnt carry bags around. He carries his in is pocket and thus his is an ultra-ultra-ultra portable media/entertainment device. ymmv.
One word of caution that my buddy is running into now -- he is having troubles finding a keyboard he likes. I have shown him many that are mentioned here on the forums and he doesnt like them -- personal choice i guess. Once you choose your size, look for the price, accessories, and features and make sure it fits your needs. You dont buy a product to create needs, you buy a product to fill your needs.

Honestly, I like the gtab simply because it is portable... Have a mate that has an ipad and he wanted to get a gtab as well because it was so easy to carry around. As lrissman said, it depends on what you want, with the new roms out and about the gtab seems to have an extended life, can watch hidef media fairly well, does for my phone/sms/email needs and has everything else I need for a tablet.
I own a case that has a bluetooth keyboard in it and that works excellantly for everything I need too..
Looked at the Galaxy tab 10" but don't like it so much, prefer an OS where most apps work with it, able to upgrade memory by adding sd card and 10" was just too big for my needs - have a laptop for anything major, gtab is just so much easier...
I try not to be biased but it can be hard...
Thank you for your replies guys!
The thing is, I plan to give up on my smartphone (Nokia 5800 ... I know, it's not that 'smart' ) and get a tablet + a basic phone only for talking to be my carry-around gadgets. So yes, portability is pretty important.

then your choice might be easy. 10" devices you have to think about how to bring them along. 7" ones fit nicely nearly anywhere. Also the galaxy tab offers 3g, the transformers here dont (although there is talk about a 3g model that i have yet to see on the market around here). You likely wont be lugging along a keyboard either (maybe a small bluetooth thumbboard)

i am the owner of both devices. I dont give up one of them. I think it would be nice to have the TF with 3G. the dock for the TF is very usefull. A good alternative is to have an other android
phone and tether with the TF.
Tab 10.1
I have both but after a month of having both, I use Tab 10.1 quite more often, see my review i did also:
@zedomax: This topic compared the Eee Pad with 7" Galaxy Tab, not the 10.1" one.
I have both and use the Tab way more than the Transformer.
The 7" is a LOT more convenient than the 10".
I'm getting the 7.7 for sure when it is out!
I was debating whether to get an iPad2 whilst on holiday in Florida as prices are cheaper than UK.
But then the 7.7 came out!
Android > iOS FTW

Hi, I have an Archos 70 Internet Tablet, and I'm going to upgrade to the new Samsung Galaxy TAB 7.7, as soon as it's on the stores.
May be if available in Europe !

I'll be getting it as soon as it comes to Canada. I've been waiting for this tablet for quite some time.
if they sell it in US and the price is under $400, then I will get one. I have both Galaxy tab 7 and 10.1.
To be honest, I love my tab 7 more since it so easy to hold and most of the apps/games are compatiable with Gingerbread.
10.1 is nice and fast.. but it is a little bit too thin and too large. hahah.. I am probably the only one to complain the "thin".
Anyways, the 8.9 is still too large to hold by one hand (I have a small hand) as well as my 5 years son.
Tab 7 is almost perfect for me except the CPU is a little bit slow, there are some lagging..opening apps/games..
So, 7.7 is dual-core (small size) is perfect for me. Hope Samsung keeps the price low.. Anyways, I am selling the 10.1 Anyone?

I'm thinking about jumping over to the xoom or acer a500, i am really cheesed off with the lack of support from samsung.
I bought my P1000, 3 days ago.. So now I am still ultra-happy..
I saw that 7.7'' but when will it come out..I could not wait..
I LOVE that amoled screen (after some time using P1000 than switch to My Galaxy S phone to do something.. only then I see that BIG diference between screens)
Anyway what is most important to me and if someone can answer me, as far as I can see this new tablet 7,7' will NOT have that she.t of nVidia Tegra..
So can I presume that new tablet it will support all video codec's as Tab P1000?
If it will I am definitely selling this (new one ) and geting 7.7..
Definitely gonna upgrade, but I dont think its gonna come out soon
and before that, I would love to taste the Ice Cream Sandwich 1st on the original tab
if the taste is good enough, i might prolong my tab life before upgrading since ICS is newer than honeycomb and prolly have better features too
I would never get an iPAD unless the incorporate some sort of cell phone capability, be it a remote device that belt clips with a display or actually on the ipad.
I love the SGT 7" that I have, it is perfect, for cell calls, and surfing the web. Think carefully, do you REALLY want to help the Apple machine make more money?
Does anyone know when it is coming out?
Actually when the last Galaxy tab 7 was released, could we buy it unlocked somewhere?
I ask because I need the new 7.7 to work with Bell. I already have a Bell 3g SIM card ready to go.
Thanks
If I could I would.
Once I have the money for the tab 7.7 ill definetley buy it.

Let's see, it's 7.7 so that's too big for a small tablet, won't fit in a pocket any more...
It runs Honeycomb rather than a phone version of android, I don't like honeycomb on larger tablets and surly its even worse on smaller screens... I have also yet to see an ambled screen that beats a common LCD (Galaxy Tab 7, iPhone 4, iPad all look much better than the Galaxy S 2 screen and it's supposed to be one of the best).
That means it can't replace my Galaxy Tab and it can't replace my iPad as it's smaller and would be missing some apps (mail and calendar for starters, android just can't compete with on that front IMO)...
So no, I won't be downgrading any of my current tablets
i like my galaxy tab 7 but im not sure if im going to invest in any more Samsung devices after they kinda wrote off this device as a red headed step child.
Ive put some thought into it and either the 7.7 or 8.9 would be nice i love the fact the 7 fits in my pocket. 7.7 has what i want and that's honey comb tables I'm a medical student and some of the apps like Google body are very useful.
So ya i think I'm gonna hop ship to 7.7 just hope there's a lot of good development on it get rid of that tw ux garbage
correction if http://sammyhub.com/2011/09/05/galaxy-tab-7-7-and-galaxy-note-pricing-for-scandinavian-countries/ is correct then no i will not be upgrading that's some insane pricing.
After using my tab as my phone for 12 months I've recently got myself a SGS2. I love the s2 and I really must disagree in regards to screen and picture quality. The S2 is far superior to my eyes. I miss my tab though, and have found it is used as a wifi device around my home as my primary portal to interwebs and the world! Its perfect and with the car kit set up in my kitchen (suction cup works well on my benchtop) it is extremely convenient and I love how connected I feel even when cooking breakfast! Its fantastic. The S2 is about to be violated and I'm hoping this'll breath new life into it but I can absolutely see myself going back to a tablet of around 7 or 8" and don't ever carry my 7" tab in my pocket so would lean towards the larger device... I would like to see a device that is a phone that goes inside a tablet that docks either @ your entertainment hub or in your car or both. The phone would be the primary CPU and such with each step providing supplementary hardware enhancing the GPU and CPU and memory extra. Or a more solid mirroring across devices.. its frustrating not being able to just put one device down and being able to continue seamlessly on another device.. its kinda exciting when you think how easy some of this would be with current tech.
I have more ideas.... but I've said too much already.. patents pending Nobleskill Inc.
;-)

I'll get the Galaxy Tab Plus, not the 7.7 one.
7.7'' is too large for my pockets and if a tab is not pocketable then it's useless to me. The Galaxy Tab Plus will have Android 3.2 and the same 7'' screen as the current tab. I'll stick to this form-factor forever (or just not upgrade my tab :-D).
Here's more info on the Tab Plus: http://thisismynext.com/2011/09/20/galaxy-tab-spotted-7-inch-honeycomb-tablet-t-mobile/
Dont think I will
I have been using the 7" for about six months and it satisfies everything I need. I can do my work on the go, remote some PC's that need fixing, surf, youtube and even gaming!!!
I don't think I will upgrade just for the sake of having a faster device as I haven't noticed any slowdown on this device.
The screen on this device I think is brighter than the s2 screen and clearer, maybe amoled is only for people with blue eyes!!!
I was all happy as a clam with my 8.9.. especially with ICS on it.. and then here comes the 7.7 with dual 1.4's and a super amoled (is it kal-el?). Not sure whether the screen being a bit smaller is gonna be good or bad. I really liked the switch from the 10.1 to the 8.9.. felt much more comfortable in the hand.. but may still be bit awkward.. is the 7.7 gonna be an even better sweet spot? Anyone here handle one yet? Thoughts on the screen.. and battery saving.
The 7.7 was actually the one I was holding out for, I will sell the 8.9 once the 7.7 is out. It will be a beast and I love the smaller form factor.
there will always be something better.
I'm actually more interested in the rumored 11.6 inch 2560x1600 tablet, this would be awesome.
I moved away from the nook tablet and then Acer a500 for the gtab 8.9. This is the sweetspot. The orocessors are great and all, but I have asked myself...
What will I be able to do on a marginally faster tablet that I cannot do perfectly now?

as much as i loved the form factor of my original 7", i won't upgrade from my current 8.9 to the 7.7 because the screen is about 200px smaller than the 8.9. Had they kept the same resolution on the 7.7 it would definitely be on my upgrade list.

AFAIK they DID keep the same resolution.
I was all set to buy the 7.7. It would have been my perfect tab, until I read about the screen burn issues and bad circles on the screen. Thats the problem with oled screens. Thank god the 8.9 doesnt use such a screen. 8.9 on my to buy list now.
I have 7.7 without any screen burn or other issues

I bought the ATT 8.9 the other day but after reading and looking into the 7.7, I just bought one and plan on returning the 8.9.
I liked the 7.0 plus I played with but it was a tad small. The 8.9 is somewhat big, so I'm hoping the 7.7 is just right.
Now back to ATT to return the 8.9.
Title says it all. Not sure if its worth it. All I know is it has honeycomb and a spot for a sim.

For $150 the S7 is still a good deal.
Looking at reviews for the Gtab2 7", it might be a good sucessor to the S7 now.
The Gtab1 7" didnt compete with the S7 as it was around $325(?), but the Gtab2 7" is only $250 new.
For anyone looking at a ~$200 sucessor/replacement for the S7, the Gtab2 7" might be a good deal?
The only other real competetors in the ~$200 were previously the kindle fire and the nook, and the S7's definitely more powerful then those.
There's also the "nexus tab" that's been informally announced, that's supposedly to compete in the 7" range,
but it is supposedly going to be $200. Either goog will sell it at a loss (which is possible) or it wont be much faster then the S7 still.
(Tegra2 isnt new anymore, but it's by no means old yet)
If and when ICS becomes more mature for the S7 you can list it as a product point now (as far as we're concerned),
but it's still got a ways to go (not surprising though, you cant expect a stable port like this in this short time from 1-2 people).
The Gtab2 7" launches with ICS, I would expect the "nexus tab" will launch with ICS, and the kindle/nook are "android-flavored" and dont techincally run android (anything that doesnt have gapps is techincally not android as the android branding is licensed).
Whichever one you pick, I gotta say I definitely use my S7 a whole lot more then my S10.
7" tabs are a good sweet spot since 10" tabs have too much overlap with laptops.
Besides ICS on the S7, there really isnt anything a 7" cant do that a 10" can.
Like many others on this forum, I am deeply enamoured to the 8.9 form factor. For me it's the sweet spot between having enough screen space for lounging at home without being too bulky or heavy to throw into my messenger with other stuff and carry around. When LG first announced their first tablet would be 8.9 based on customer research, I knew I'd be drawn to it, having found the original iPad too bulky. But by the time it came state sides as t mobile spring board it was out of spec and unwieldy. So when Samsung announced the galaxy tab 8.9 with current specs and lighter and thinner than ipad2 dimensions, I knew I was going to get it. After playing around with the 10.1 while waiting for the 8.9, then getting the 8.9 soon after it's release, there was no turning back!
Now, I plan to stick with this 8.9 for at least through the year, but admittedly in a world where quad cores and 1080nd screens are coming out, I've been keenly waiting to see if a current successor to the 8.9 would be announced, either by Sammy or another vendor, and I have become anxious that this form factor might die out. I secretly hope that there will be a galaxy note 8.9 in addition to the galaxy note 10.1 set for Q3, but I'm not seeing anything.
Then today I read this news on the new kindle fire rumors, and lo and behold, a 8.9 size with 1080hd screen is there!
http://m.cnet.com/news/at-least-three-kindle-fire-2-tablets-one-with-4g-on-the-way/57467294
This kind of torments my heart. I'm glad to see a manufacturer come up with these specs and hope it prods others too. But I'm not really glad it's a Amazon kindle. I tried the kindle fire for about a month before selling it, and I was quite disappointed at the sluggishness, box like design, and I'm not sure I trust Amazon to build a quality tablet anymore. And I fear Amazon will be more restrictive in terms of root-and port-ability, not to mention lack even more developer support.
But then if this is the only 8.9 tablet on the market at the end of the year and foreseeable future, I might feel compelled. What are your thoughts on the next 8.9 tablet for you?

if we can hack it and use a real version of Android then i can NOT wait for an 8.9 update.
I hate the Amazon interface, i personally really prefer Google's Android and the variety of choice in Google Play.

Yeah, if the hardware is good enough(quad core and 1080p), and it is hackable, then I guess I'll consider the kindle too.
Though Amazon app store had a few good deals, I have to say, I much prefer the Google play too (as much as I dislike that name), if only to avoid update lags.
I so do wish we'll have more 8.9 inch options later this year!

I'm surprised the 8.9 size isn't more popular to be honest. I've always though that the iPad was a hell of a cumbersome thing, even the 2nd and 3rd generation versions, but that the Kindle Fire and other 7" devices tend to be almost like slightly overgrown smartphones, too small for web browsing and barely an investment in themselves unless you're a heavy eBook reader. 8.9 got it bang on but doesn't seem to have kicked off, to the point that Sammy haven't done an 8.9 Tab2.
Do remember though that the Tab2 range is almost the same product manufactured differently to get the price down (and redesigned to avoid further law suits from Apple) so other than waiting for OS updates there's not much of a disadvantage owning a Galaxy Tab 8.9.
But yeah, the 8.9 is the Goldie-Locks tablet, it's not too big, not too small, just right!
Personally, if we can get a Jelly Bean port after the official ICS release then I'm set.
I don't play intensive games so have no need for quad core anything. I'll be sticking with my GT8.9 for some time I think.
I do enjoy my 8.9 as well, but I think Samsung and other manufactures put out a bunch of different sizes the last couple years to feel out the market. Its looking like the 10inch and 7inch are prolly gonna become the normal going forward with most manufacturers if I were to guess.

Which is really tragic, considering he majority of consumers never had much of a chance to try out a 8.9. If anything, I hope a kindle fire does come out in 8.9, if only, so that it peaks consumer and manufacturer interest in the 8.9 form factor!

Well, not that I'd wish to restrict the choice of others, but if you think about it, the tab 8.9 if the same height as the iPad, which speaks to it's optimal size, yet it's lighter and with 16:10 dimensions good for watching movies too ... so I do wish and think companies should show more love for 8.9s.

8.9 is the right size but too many people dont know it :-(
I have tried the Ipad, the original thrive and galaxy, a trans prime, the fire and the Acer 7 inch, and my beloved touchpad and the galaxy tab 8.9 is just the perfect size and the screen is much prettier than ips displays. I love it. But the tegra 2 is just not enough. My poor tab just can't handle HD vids. So sadly my touchpad gets more use than my galaxy. Also I wish it had expandable memory. Come on Sammy why didn't you give this beauty an SD card slot? So while I agree that the 8.9 is just the right size it is due for an upgrade. Sadly it doesn't look as though one will be here soon enough. So for me its just waiting for someone to make a tab with a prettier screen and expandable memory. Unfortunaty for me none of the new tabs have a good screen. Ips displays have washed out colors when you compare them to an Ipad or a Samsung tablet. As for the 8.9 fire 2 it could be a decent machine. I put an aokp ics rom on my friends kindle and its a decent tablet now. Just a bit too small for me. Only time will tell but here's to my prayers for Sammy to make an 8.9 2 with a real processor and a SD card slot! That would be the best.
I've owned: Transformer w/dock., Iconia A500, Toshiba Thrive, Streak 7, Evo View, 8" china pad, Evo View, Archos 80 G9 and of course the 8.9. Left in the stable are the
Evo View: I'm on sprint so having the data plan is nice, but it sits on my nightstand on wifi and used once in a blue moon. Will probably sell it soon while it still has some value. 7" is just too small and not enough of a size difference over my 4" phone. I like the stylus, but haven't used it as much as I thought I would. The data plan is nice because some wifi at the hospitals I go to have a sign in, and for some odd reason webmail doesn't work while on it. Really odd. It was the same on the touchpad. Yet the Apple crowd had no issues. Haven't figured that one out.
Archos 80 G9: I paid $125 via Staples last month for it. Like the 4:3 8" size. Dual core OMAP, connectivity out the wazoo (full size usb, hdmi, microSD and microUSB), and I've been on official ICS since day one. The screen isn't bad. It has a little more heft and big side bezels, but it's comfy and more comfy to hold than any 10.1". Plus it has the built in kickstand. Another reason to ditch the Evo View. I have a dock for it, and I wouldn't need the dock to keep it upright on the nightstand. still not my ideal screen size as HD content is no better than a 7" tablet, or slightly less even. Not sure on that math.
And the 8.9: Tegra 2 is fine for me. No hi profile blu ray rips for me. I have the usb dongle for a card reader. Great screen even if it is PLS. The size and weight is the perfect trade off for carrying between the 10" and 7" while still having enough real estate to make media viewing and reading enjoyable. Best screen size out there if you ask me.
That being said, I want a 9 or 4:3. I think that's the best of both worlds. HD would still be a bit larger than a 7" tablet and everything else would be a nice 4:3 9" . And I want built in connectivity. microSD and HDMI are key. So until that comes, I have no need to buy another tablet unless the 8.9 and Archos become obsolete.
Yeah, I getcha... An 8.9 with Tegra 3 would be nice. For me, well, HD Movies on this little screen, personally I wouldn't notice/appreciate the difference, I watch some SD stuff and stream Netflix on there when I can't use my TV and it looks sharp as anything to be honest, heh... Tegra 3 would be nice for gaming though.
I know what you mean, I've been hoping to hear some rumors of a Galaxy Note 8.9 as well. Honestly the 10-inch form factor feels too big, and the 7-inch too small. The 8.9 felt just felt perfect and the S-Pen is now a big deal for me on a tablet. Stick in some internals like whats in the Galaxy SIII (quad-core, 2 GB ram, NFC/Android Beam, Jelly Bean, and 2MP FFC/5MP Rear Camera). Bring back the IR blaster from the original Tab 8.9, and a 1080p screen (to keep in competition with the Retina display). Then all they'd have to do is keep it thin and light (not plastic-like) and I'd probably camp out for that one, even if it costs $599
