CyanogenMod or Overcome? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In your opinion, which is better, CyanogenMod or Overcome? Currently, I'm running Overcome 2.0, but have often noticed lag when I'm using it, though I'm not sure if this is a problem with the ROM.

Overcome 3.10 it looks good and is fast. I prefer touchwiz to cyanogenmod because of task manager and other samsung apps.
If you want speed go for cyanogenmod, if you want more functionality go for overcome.

No, because cyanogenmod has all bloatware removed so it is faster.

cm7 is fast but missing optimize code for tab , your music player drain 3time more than stock kernel. most video codec need software decoder. These are stopper if you use them frequency.
but things i love in cm7 is theme , i love white notification bar which cannot find in other roms.
you also can redesign auto brightness level to work as it should to be.

I like the cm7 it has alot of customizable stuff ex. The built in theme chooser... I have had cm7 on both mine n my girls phone for a while no problems im waiting for the honeycomb release coming up that should be great when it finished as well

I agree with you, performance are not calculated by numbers of bloatware. Quadrant checks how fast your tab performs when doing integer, float, etc calculations, and also io checks (read, write database), 2D graphics and 3D.
check out my post about this.
if you look for speed, true open source softwares, get cm7
If you look for a balance between battery life and performance and also some stock softwares, get Overcome (if ur ok with ads blocked), the flashing knowledge is a bonus as well (thanks to thepitbull with his extensive howto).
If what you need only undervolt, add koxudaxi kernel to your stock rom.

Quadrant tests kernel, hardware and software. You may have removed bloatware but touchwiz is still there right.

Gingerbread differences

I upgraded to gingerbread but dont notice some of the gui visual differences. Anyone else notice this too?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA Premium App
Theres not much changed in the graphics itself. More underlying stuff has been changed.
For me the most important things are greatly improved battery life and properly working gps (quick fix). There are others reporting faster and more responsive overall user experience.
Its really worth to upgrade to 2.3

Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA Premium App
Mines a hell of a lot faster with Gingerbread... Love it, would recommend the upgrade...
Mines a p1000t, aussie telstra version. Has same modem as the A,T&T version in the states...
Rogers sgt p1000. I waz hoping for alot of the gui graphical updates in gingerbread.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA Premium App
Search tab forumn gingerbread has ALOT of bugs. Threads and threads with pages and pages.
Wait till oc/uv and a more stable kernel. Current kernel is a mix between tab software with a sgs driver. Because samsung hasnt released source code yet. Gingerbread isnt officially out in the us or most of the world for the tab.
An interesting note on gingerbread. Drop your lcd density to 165 and some stock icons upgrade to a totally different icon. Example is phoneicon.

If you want to change the GUI of your Tab, I suggest that you try out some launcher apps. LauncherPro for example, you can easily change how the homescreen looks.
Or if your open to custom ROM's, I suggest that you keep a close eye to the development of Overcome ROM. They are beginning to customize the GUI of the ROM, as well as optimization tweaks for the whole device.
Thanks for all of your answers

[Q] Hit the 5 month mark, should I finally root and lagfix?

I have noticed that when I click a button, I usually have to wait from 1-2 seconds before I get a response. Would lagfix take care of this? I'm running stock Froyo.
As many have stated all the lagfix does is help fix the very slow rts file system, it most likely would not help in your case.
Best thing to do is delete unused apps, and reboot the phone every day or to(seems to help mine out, cant guarantee results)
Also if you havent needed root in 5 months you probably don't need it
Unless you want to use opitimised roms, I dont see why you would need to root. Check your memory usage delete unused apps and reboot the phone ever once in a while.
My honest opinion, no reason to have an android phone if you are not using roms

Gonna have to agree with mcord here. had to go back to stock froyo for about 5 hours (didnt have all my tool to get back my 2.3.4 ROM) and it was horrible.
you might not be up for it but i really recommend flashing a Froyo Custom ROM from one of the xda DEVs. you'll love your phone and be amazed that it can be so much smoother and responsive.
First thing I did after i rooted was flashed a new kernel to overclock. Performance increased but battery life was poor. Then my first rom was cm7..been hooked since..tried miui once then went back to cm7.

This is what lagfix can do for your phone.
Im using stock mosaic V 2.3.4 rom with no overclock.

Providing arbitrary benchmarks does not seem like an actual reason to employ a lag fix.

No a Benchmark score is not the best example to lag fix your phone ,but the more power you get, plus better battery life and, better perrformance are great reasons to lag fix your phone. I just posted the quadrant score so kb0npw can see the increase performance from normal rfs file system to ext4(lag fix).

I dont think he thought it meant everything, he was giving a simple before and after which showed some improvement. Quadrant can actually be pretty useful when trying to gauge what effects certain changes have on your phone, say you score a 1900 before you change 'x' and then 2200 after that change, then you know its increased performance somewhat and youre moving in the right direction. How much it has increased your performance is debatable, however. My point is quadrant can be a useful tool when making changes on your phone if you take it with a grain of salt.
EDIT: To answer op's question, Read up on some custom roms and flash one, the difference is phenomenal and you'll wonder how you went 5 months without them. If you have any other questions feel free to pm me and I'll see what help I can be

What rom do you use
Sent from my LG-P990 using xda premium
The last one stable cm7 rom from the official site.
which ROM??which launcher are you using??
for me CM7 temasek 135.3 with symbiosis 1.3.1 kernel with guest toolchain fixed every lag...
when multitasking heavily i used to turn Zram ON (192mb).(also I used GO launcher EX....with every GO app and widget possible so my configuration was pretty high on memory consumption compared to other launchers)
give a try to windows 7 launcher as well..it is smooth as ****(you can also have widgets on that)
but be prepared to sacrifice a bit of functionality
Also install Chainfire3D. Boosts the performance too especially in launchers with transition effects.

Well at least that's what I noticed. You could try it out too. Try some applications without CF3D. After that install CF3D and run the same applications. Like I said, especially in launchers it eliminates the lag in transition effects. May just be a placebo but that always worked for me and significantly boosted the performance.

That's placebo, i think. Even author, Chainfire said, that due to magic strings, CF3D might won't work anymore on newer android versions.
But maybe it is side effect? Who knows...
Anyway, the buttery system from tonyp works well. Also you can use Superchatger starter kit with suoercharger script. Good Luck OP

go for any stock based rom - better performance and battery life
There is no such thing as best ROM

Best roms here
Your thread will probably be closed.

And yes stock based would be the best choice to go with.

basically there is no rom which is specifically made for improvin gaming speed! so my advice to you is dat download GAME BOOSTER. its an app which would increase ur gamin speed at the cost of battery. hit thnx if helpd!

No. Every rom has it's own up and downs. So if you need a rom for one specific goal, then one Rom is accually better then the other.. e.g. you don't use cm10 if you need a good battery/camera.
Quite logical if you ask me.
And I think cm7 uses less RAM then stock, so cm7 is indeed a better choice.

That is the problem. It is a matter of opinion. What you think (regardless of your logic) doesn't make any rom better than the other (at anything). Prove your reasons by standardised, peer reveiwed methods before you say that.
I think that mods will close this thread. That doesn't mean it will happen.
One rom has better battery life than the other, but the other one might have more futures(did I spell that correct?) . Those r not opinions but facts, But which of those things you need/want, is up to you, so the best rom FOR YOU, doesn't have to be the best rom FOR ME. That's the opinion part.
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
If you ask me I don't think it matters on the rom, but on the current performance governor and app running in the background.
Try installing a system app killer or changing your governor to lagfree or performance.
Best of luck!

any CM7, performance governer, adrenaline boost before gaming. beware it may have an impact on battery.
Flashed the apocalypse rom and am using the adrenaline engine, AV got to say its defo the rom for me its very quick and I haven't had/got no problems with it at all
GT-S5830 APOCALYPSE ADRENALINE
for the music use power amp
for gaming use the rom you want with No-frills CPU Control and put cpu to 864 mHz and governor on smartassv2
IV set CPU at 806 that's working great so far and AV notice a list of kernals on this rom but don't want to flash 1 in case it messes the phone up and I'm not even sure if they work for my ace yet

Can someone suggest/link me to a good ROM for free ram/gaming and a kernel

[Q] CM9 (Fat'n'Creamy) vs. CM10 (JCSullins)

Hi,
I just thought it would be useful to start a thread focused specifically and exclusively on the pluses and minuses of the two great choices we have for our Touchpads.
I suspect a lot of us are sitting with CM9 nightlies and wondering which way to leap...what do people think? What are the benefits and issues with each?
Thanks.

I'd say that is more of a "Pro" than a "Con", in my opinion.
Even without flash support we can still install it and run it with native browser or Firefox.

I was noticing graphics errors with flash on CM10, either low FPS or scrambled looking flash elements. I also got this in other UIs in CM10 randomly. I went back to CM9 since I don't really see the benefit of CM10 at the moment.
