I roooted my galaxy s some months ago to apply the one click lag fix (Super One Click, v1.6 i think, tho not sure about the version number).
I have since removed the lag-fix and unrooted. The whole process completed without any problems. However, when i tried to update to Gingerbread, it tells me my software version cannot be updated.
When i checked the software details on the phone it has the Kernal as 2.6.32.9 [email protected]8#1
Im pretty sure this still identifies the phone as being rooted.
I tried rooting and unrooting again (this time using v1.9), as before the whole process completed as it should, but nothing has changed on the phone.
I understand that if I flashed the firmware, it would remove the rooting, but would prefer to avoid this route if possible.
The phone is running stock froyo - PDA:JP7 / PHONE: JP3 / CSC: JP5 (TMU)
Any advice on this would be appreciated

OK, I have flashed with 3-file JPU, then flashed single file JPY. But still showing the rooted Kernal.
Can anyone help me find a stock kernal to download, as I have had no joy myself.

Actually the bolded line doesn't indicate whether you're rooted or not. Once you have flash a stock rom via Odin, you're good to go without any root access.
Sorry if I'm being a bit dim... but what holder line?
I'm pretty certain the phone is no longer rooted, but as long as it still has this root kernel on it Kies won't allow it to update.

Updating through Kies is a piece of cake if there is an update available. I don't know what the stock ROM was in UK but I guess early phones shipped with XXJF3. For everything else, read the FAQ!

The only official tool for updating is Kies. However if you want to load arbitrary firmware you can use Odin (which is a leaked Samsung tool) or Heimdall (a custom flashing tool developed by myself) once it's been tested that is, it's in a public alpha at the moment.

Superoneclick works alright. I've heard it doesn't root official KB1 yet. I could be wrong Cuz I think the official KB1 is garbage. If you want KB1 then flash cognition.
Sent from my Captivate using XDA Premium
No, I've heard that SuperOneClick is pretty much the "only" way it'll root the official 2.2 KB1.
Ok, I upgraded with kies, and got kb1( uckb1), and I rooted with superoneclick (1.7). No problem at all, but I did use a computer running windows 7.
About ji6. There is now an Odin for UCJI6 (i think it is one click, but not sure). I found the link somewhere in the forum,i don't have it handy.
If I find link, will post.

I would probably recommend the 2.2 one (if you're not going to flash any custom ROMs).
If you are thinking of custom ROMs, then I recommend going to 2.1.

so I flashed using odin back to jf6 and then used kies mini to get to kb1, but halfway through the upgrading process the kies mini force closed and my phone was semi-bricked. I sent it into samsung. it came back, same cosmetic wear, ENTIRE inside of the phone was replaced
Wow. What build number is your Cappy now then?

hi all,
when i first got my galaxy s it was locked to Orange (UK Network) and i unlocked the phone to be used on any network, and have been happily using it for well over half a year, i also attempted to flash the F1 SG2 Rom, however, there wasnt enough space on the partition so i flashed the phone back to XXJVQ (which i had on the phone before trying to install the F1 ROM) however, now my phone doesn't recognise the SIM that i put in, im wondering if the flash had anything to do with it or if the phone has locked itself. i have been researching around and some people have said that its something to do with efs or IMEI, i have no clue what that means but its sounds important, they also say that you need backups of these and that they contain phone files, however, if they were important there would be more emphasis placed on backing them up...
anyone who has had the same issue or someone who knows whats going on please help. everything else works fine, so is there a way to get my phone to read the SIM again without risking totally bricking the whole thing??
an (easy to understand) guide on how to fix this would be much appreciated...

Your imei is the code that identifies your phone. Look in settings, about phone, status.
Have you tried reflashing your rom?
If all else fails, i would recommend a flash of jm9 with odin. Files can be found at samfirmware.com. It's got me out of some deep black holes in the past!
Don't stress too much mate, there's been plenty of times that my phone hasn't recognised my sim when flashing cm7.
Reflash your rom, if that doesn't work, flash jm9, and most of all, relax.

Worth trying the simple things, take out sim, clean and reinsert, this has worked for me in the past, and when you do get going again get sgs toolbox and with that you can make a back up of your efs folder, check your imei against the label on box that phone came in

Jm9 helps everything - trust me.
When you flash a rom with odin it completely wipes your phone. The process of getting cm7 2.3.4 on your phone involves flashing back to froyo or eclair first.
You seem hesitant, if you're worried, i suggest you spend a few days reading up. Try the sticky on rooting/flashing in the development section.
P. S. There's a thanks button at the bottom of every post.

Hi guys.
It's 2 in the morning here in the U.K and I have to get up at 7:30, still racking my brain...
I wanted a standard ROM so I uninstalled root. I then did a factory reset, now my samsung keyboard just types as null null null...
I can only use ODIN now to flash, I have no CWM. I have no way of using Mobile ODIN either as I have no root.
What do I do? I have Baseband version N7000XXLRB. With Build Number IMM76D.XXLRG
I have gone on to the main rom page and just downloaded the first U.K one I saw. Is this okay? I'm running stock ICS and stock recovery.
Also when I open up standard recovery instead of the little green droid with the shape in his tummy, theres now a droid laying down with his tummy open with a little red warning triangle?
So the bottom line is, how can I fix it so that when I type it doesn't say null null null. I need my phone desperately and I need all the help I can get.
Thanks in advance.
Oli
Just try flashing the ROM again dude... if the problem persist, got rooted then install RootExplorer go to system/app folder and delete AxT9IME.odex file then flash the ROM again by Odin..

Nothing To Worry. Do this
Just Open PCOdin. Put your phone in Download Mode. Connect it to PC using USB Cable.Select the same rom file which you have on your phone now under CSC tab instead of PDA tab and flash. It will solve your problem

Okay I downloaded N7000XXLQ2_N7000XEULP4_XEU... even though my ROM is LRB, would this work? As LP4 was the first U.K ROM there is? The first LRB ROM was German and I can't see an LRB ROM from the U.K there? Or does anyone have any suggested ROMs for me to flash?
As a temporary fix I switched to Swype, then downloaded JB keyboard from the Play Store, but ideally would like to have this sorted.
Thanks again

Root current and backup efs on multiple locations, note down original csc. That way you can always go back to original situation, plus you have a fallback in case efs gets corrupted from flashing different kinds of csc roms
Most dont say this, but it is the most valuable advice if you dont want to loose imei, service, warrantee, ota/kies updatability (when back on original csc roms), value when selling phone, etc

Hi there,
My best bet on the stock ROM your gonna use would be this one - > N7000XXLRK---4.0.4/12.07.24-N7000XEULP5, look and download it from here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 (courtesy of Doc Ketan)
There's instructions on that thread as well on how to flash the ROM.
EDIT: On the setup stage (after you've flash it), you will be prompted on which Language your going to use, Look for English (United Kingdom) and follow the steps from there (clicking 'Next' from thereon)
Thank you very much I will try this when I'm at my dads in an hour or so. I'll also thank your post
