Recovery system - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why cant Samsung and Motorola and LG use a recovery sytem tht is like HTC's, where you can flash any version of android without having to be near a computer and flash kernels, bootloader, or anything else. I find it good tht you can recover from a brick, but having to use the comptuer is a pain.

It is totally upto the company in this matter!
I guess they dont want ppl to mess up with their phone n stay on the stock rom that came built in!
Its not that hard to flash a rom on of phones either

I know that, but installing ROMs on an S-OFFed HTC device is way easier than it is on Sammy products

Yea. It is way easier. But way harder to recover a brick as you already mentioned. For this reason alone I love my captivates recovery configuration. I rarely need my pc to flash a new rom/modem/kernel. Only reason would be to change file systems or bootloaders or android os version(typically only if downgrading, but with the need for gb bootloaders its a little different going to gingerbread)

[Q]Bootloaders

Is there any way to check what bootloaders I am running? I did have the GB bootloaders installed when I ran Fusion, Fasty & J3 leak but I have Odin'd back to stock with the no bootloader version & Kies Mini upgraded me to Froyo. Does Kies flash the froyo bootloaders? Is there a way I can check using root explorer?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
If you flash a TB rom and it doesn't work. The only way to check.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
A side from trial and error of kernels and button cimbos you can't. Tho there might be some info in a UART readout. But getting it to even post UART is more then what most of us are willing to do.

No. I've stayed on i9000 GB bootloaders and flashed Captivate ROMs; they work fine.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
Normally no, gb bootloaders are compatible with each other, only the stock music player is known to misbehave. Some devs will advise you to use specific bootloaders, but in the end it's ur call. I'd say pick ur poison and stick with it, avoid flashing bootloader as much as u can, as it's THE part in the flashing process where your phone can be hard bricked.
Just flashed a GB stock rom w/ no BL's & it works. Looks like Mini Kies leaves the BLs alone when being upgraded from Eclair.

Are you on Rogers? if so then Kies did update the BL's, if it didnt and you try running a true GB ROM then you wouldnt be able to boot, it would have a bunch of weird colors on your screen when you tried to boot up...
I am on AT&T. Read my first post. I ran custom roms then I went back to stock then upgraded to Froyo thru Mini Kies. My question was to find a way to see what BLs I had after a Kies update. It seems not to touch them on AT&T until GB is official because I just tested another GB rom & it works.

Calling cm7 users. Need some advice.

A lot of conflicting info here and on rootzwiki.com. I just was asked by the play and trade guy to flash his captivate. All in trade for his pandoras battery and knowledge of its use. Basically fix my psp and I flash his phone. Ok I just want cm7 stable on here with a good oc kernel. Can I do like a mesmerize and odin flash a recovery and the. Flash cm7 and gapps reboot and do a kernel? What steps do I need to take. I see a lot about bricks in the captivate threads, are they easy to break? I'm told this o e is two years old. That would mean its probably ok with being able to get I to dl mode easy yeah?
Like I said alotta info floating around I just wanna do this right can a cm7 user break this down for me. It's an at&t phone if that matters.
Thanks in advance.

CM7 stable comes with an OC kernel. Just Odin in a kernel with CWM on it, then flash the CM7 zip.
Got a link to the right kernel to odin?

Flash the Glitch kernel as it OC's up to 1.7 ghz though I wouldn't recommend it.

I would say the Captivate is actually very difficult to brick, and going to CM7 has basically a 0% chance of a hard brick. As Aus_Azn points out, CM7 will overclock with the default kernal.
Install instructions (as long as you are coming from Eclair or Froyo) are here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide

Best rom kernel combo

I know people get tired of such postes but my friend has a cappy with somesort of ics rom on it and he says it will randomly reboot at any given time. Ever since we left good old serindipity behind hes been having issues even on gingerbread so if someone could recommend the most stable rom/kernel thet would be gr8. Thanks! I want stability over speed.

Any special procedures?

Okay so my friend has a Samsung captivate. He is on 2.2 and I would really like to help him root and install cwm and a stable cm9 build. I see a lot of one click methods but I'm not particularly sure which one to use... I have an s3 which to me seemed easier to root and install cwm. All this eclair, froyo, and gb things are hurting my head. And just driving me in circles. But if I had some direction it would be appreciated. I just want to know what I need to do to get ,root, cwm, and cm9 thanks ahead of time!

I don't claim to know everything but I do know this. Being that he is on 2.2 you will have to flash to gingerbread first and make sure whatever you flash has bootloaders included otherwise you will have a bricked phone at some point along your way to CM9.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
Go to that link and it will give you several one click options to get you to a variety of stock GB roms. Also for your intitial root there are several one click applications available that will get you fixed up you should just have to google them.
Yeah I'm used to having to flash new firmware, flashing cwm again then new Rom.that was on my old sensation. But thanks I will tell him to update to gingerbread via kies.then I will flash a custom kernel via Odin then just update to cm9
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Stickies also have some good instructions.
Okay so he just upgraded to 2.3.5 so am I going to need to install boot loader as well? or am I just going to use the one click tool
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
If he is on 2.3.5 GB already, root the phone and flash a corn kernel so he will have a working CWM
If he has kk4 gb 2.3.5, then he has the gb bootloaders. So all u need is to flash a kernel with cwm and then the Rom of ur choice copied to ur internal sd and u will be good to go. So see this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19425513&postcount=1

Yes GB bootloaders are the requirement and are even backwards compatible. You should be able to install anything from Eclair to Jelly Bean now without problem. But as the previous response states make sure you follow the directions for whatever rom you are using so you are less likely to run into issues.
Yeah I just ran into problem after problem tonight. Finally got cm9 installed and his imei for changed. I am running into every speed bump possible with this phone

[Q] Captivate won't enter download mode...

First time posting on Xda, but i've been browsing for awhile, nothing helped my scenario so I'm gonna post about it;
So recently I got a used Captivate I896 on ROGERS from my friend as he wasn't using it. Nothing was wrong with it, worked fine and I got the captivate when it had 2.2 stock FROYO. Through a bit of research and a different friend informing me, I figured out I could update it to stock 2.3.3 on rogers through Kies which I did. Everything was going well, phone did everything I needed it to on Gingerbread. Then... The same friend who told me about updating to 2.3.3, started talking to me about roms and rooting, this is when I found out about Xda. So for awhile I was looking into roms and trying to find a decent ICS rom to put on to my cappy as I saw countless videos on youtube and threads here on Xda of people running ICS with few problems. So... with my friend's help I took the bull by the horns and successfully rooted my cappy on 2.3.3. Downloaded Rom manager.. and then we figured out it wasnt supported for the captivate so I flashed the CornKernel which got me the correct version of CWM. This is where everything started to go downhill... We found TeamHacksung's ICS rom for the cappy on youtube. I downloaded the files onto my device, made a backup, and booted into CWM. Everything was going smooth, we wiped the phone, did everything correctly from the video instructions and then went for the reboot. It booted but... Soon after it started to bootloop. At this point I was panicking as it was my current phone I was using. I managed to get it back into CWM and we tried the files again... Same result in a bootloop. Oh, might i mention, the Backup file didn't work for some reason. Maybe I did something wrong? But anyways, at this point I thought I was bricked as the phone would only Bootloop. Talking to my friend on skype, he linked me "Odin" I had heard about it at the time but I was unaware of what it could do. He then linked me "How to get Samsung Captivate into Download mode" which i followed the steps and got my device into download mode and restored it using Odin. It was a successful restore, it worked... but... As I mentioned before, had the rogers boot screens and it WAS an I896.. but when i rebooted the phone it was now running 2.1 Eclair with At&t boot screens and it now thinks its a I897. At this point I was like, I'll just use it for awhile and hopefully we can try this again soon as it was getting late and I needed my phone the next day. After about a week of using Eclair, I was ABSOLUTELY sick of it, everything felt outdated and old. So I looked into flashing my phone back to either stock 2.2 or stock 2.3.3 OR even all the way to ICS. Then bad things started happening again... Whatever my friend linked me to restore my phone using Odin it left me with this:
Model number: SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 <---(Was I896)
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: I897UCJF6
Kernel version: 2.6.29 [email protected] #2
Build number: ECLAIR
None of this seemed right to me, which now, I THINK it's not right. I tried all button combos to get it back into download mode to possibly flash 2.2 or 2.3.3 again... But NOTHING, download mode won't work after all that, which it did in the past otherwise I wouldn't have this problem right now. So I decided to Root my phone again, which I successfully did through a OneClick method (Forget which one I used). I decided maybe I could download ROM manager on the market, seeing as my phone is outdated and I can't use Google Play. Soon I found out Rom manager (Atleast the free version) doesn't exist on the Market. I tried 3rd party websites like 4shared to download it but Eclair has no options to allow untrusted sources. ALSO, I tried settling for Kies and Kies Mini, both of which recognize my phone as a "unregistered device" even though I used Kies in the first place. I feel i've dug myself into quite the hole now, so sick of this phone at this point
P.S. I've debated making a Jig to force it into Download mode... but would this be the solution? And if so, what could i use to flash back to stock? AND sorry about the long post, I wanted to include as much info as I possibly knew about my phone.
I feel I should mention again, the phone DOES work, but I'm sick of Eclair and I would like to get back to stock. Please help, anything would be great at this point.
Thanks
You really shouldn't flash back to eclair for that reason. You should update to gingerbread with bootloaders. To get download mode, you will need either a jig or adb reboot download.

Well, depends what you're looking for. If you want to be on the latest, and not the greatest, I would choose any of the ICS roms. The Collective has some good stuff, and so does Cyanogen. CM10 is updated "daily" where I'm not sure what the Collective's release schedule is. You'll find that both of those are "laggy" though, as that's been my experience. I had CM9 ICS on my Captivate and it was certainly a good "daily driver".
I was looking into Jellybean.. But I'm not sure. Is CM9 a good choice? Cause I've been look at it, and considering it? Can you link me to CM9?

Honestly, you could go either way. Generally, I felt like CM10 ran a bit slower, but that may have changed with the recent partition change. If you want the latest and most up to date, go with CM10. CM9 may perform better but it won't get new features. It's up to you to decide which you like better. You can find nightly threads for both in the development section.
In the development section, is the thread by illuminatedone the correct thread? Cause it's the only stock rom thread I could find. And can I ask what Nightly means?

The fourth post in that thread links to the Rogers one.
Nightly builds are built almost everyday by the buildbot, and they contain all the latest changes. They are generally considered to be less stable than the stable releases.

How do i find out about the bootloaders on my phone and are they nessessary? Thanks
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
U have bootloaders on ur phone regardless.
If u r running eclair/froyo, then u have those bootloaders. If u r running gingerbread, then u have those gb bootloaders. Simple as that.
If u try to run a gb firmware on ur phone and u have a really bad pixelated screen when it boots up then u r trying to run a gb firmware with eclair/froyo bootloders. U need gb boots to run gb firmware.
If u have a running gb firmware on ur phone then u have gb bootloaders... Also they are backwards compatible and u don't need to flash bootloaders again.

Im currently running eclair, but i was on stock gingerbread before this whole mess. Does that mean i still have gb bootloaders or what...?

That depends on whether the eclair firmware that u used contained bootloaders or not...
