[Q] Kernals? - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

So I've read up a bit on kernals I understand they handle out the input/output between the hardware and software/apps. I hear people talking about all different kinds of kernals but I have I have no clue what to get? Right now I'm running the lastest miui.us rom from miui.us on my milestone with zepps V6 supercharger and openrecovery autoboot. Pretty sure I'm running stock kernal too since I haven't flashed any? I just don't know enough about them to make a decsion. Was wondering if someone could recomend a good one or explain more, would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You are not able to change the kernel that you have on the Milestone. For that, you need to have an unlocked bootloader, which the Droid has, but the Milestone does not. We are limited to the Eclair and Froyo kernels that are signed by Motorola and it seems like as of now that is all we're going to get.

Ah you would think with the work around allowing us to flash custom roms that'd we'd be able to do the same with kernals. Guess not.

Sorry, but why are you even talking about CM6.0.0 RC3 when the final is out, and yet even better there are nightlies which you can install which is way more feature rich than the final??!!
Tell you what, hit the CM forums, skool yourself up, cop a nightly, flash it, then come and ask for help (which by then you shouldnt have to)
Any ROM can be used on an SLCD device, it's the Kernel that will decide if it will work with the screen. eViLs latest kernels and intersectRavens work with it as they are based of Cyanogens source.

[Q] suggest me a rom please

im from fascinate.. my roommate has a captivate and would like to get a rom and voodoo.. i would like to get him a super-clean rom, that everything works on. that you have source code to (meaning i can use custom kernels like voodoo) preferably zip aligned and deodexed. im running dj05 sc.9 on my fascinate, and would like something comparable.. if you have froyo source, froyo would be preferred.
thanks in advance. i appreciate any and all help.
Try dilligaf's 7.x. Link in my signature
You can't really go wrong with the newest versions of Cognition or Serendipity either. I was on Cog 4 then flashed Serendipity 6.2. Both are are very stable.
Any of the more popular roms should meet your criteria.
Is it just me or have there been an abundance of "what rom?" threads lately?
Agreed. Less reading, and more cbf'd people.
My vote is for FireFly. I have yet to have any issues and when there is an issue X is quick to get a fix out.
Sre with ryan za olcf
CM7
this link should give you a run down on everything current
http://capfaq.com/w/ROM_Table
And tell your roomate to flash his own rom that way you won't have to flash for him every other day

No one can tell you want rom to run. Most of the custom roms meet your Requirments. Please do a little searching before opening a new thread

[Q] Best Kernel for my HTC Hero?

I've done some researching and found out that some kernels are better than the ones the ROMS bring... not sure whether this is true but would like to know if this IS true which kernel is the best you guys have come across that makes games run faster, smoother?
Tips appreciated!

Ideally you should stick with the kernel that comes with your ROM. There are slight differences between the kernels that can cause issues.
For instance, CyanogenMod 7 and its derivatives already contain an up-to-date version of Decad3nce's kernel. So there's no need to flash his (now outdated) kernel over these ROMs. Doing so will break CM7's built-in CPU controls and may cause instability.
On the other hand, some of the older, Sense-based ROMs have software that hasn't been updated to reflect changes in the kernel. These ROMs need kernels designed especially for them.
The best idea in regard to stability is to stay with what you have. If you're feeling adventurous, you should look for an explicit statement of compatibility either in a ROM or kernel developer's thread.
Thanks ill read more about s0be and stick with aosp's default kernel.

Interesting......I was under the impression that all of the Cyanogen kernels were capped at 691 MHz though? My phone is stable to 748 MHz with virtually every rom I've tried crashes at 768 MHz. I have been using the Decafuct uncapped #589 kernel with RC4, however it doesn't work at all with 7.0.0 stable and the pre-packed kernel seems very sluggish to me compared with how RC4 runs.

VooDoo lagfix

First post, so take it with a grain of noobness.
I would like to get my feet wet in the rooted phone arena by using Voodoo, but I don't see that it has been updated for the Cappy running stock/ ATT Froyo. I see some stuff on the I9000, though, but I'm not sure if that will work, and the information seems somewhat dated.
So a few questions: is there another lagfix I can try that doesn't involve flashing a ROM?
Can I use Voodoo lagfix on my 2.2 Froyo phone?
Should I just nut up and do some more homework and flash to one of the latest ROM's?
You should definitely read more. There are dated kernels for 2.2 that will have lag fixes implemented that you could use, although I would suggest roms.
but reading its best

Well, If you like Froyo, forget about stock froyo and flash a custom ROM. Cognition is good. Plus the froyo custom ROMS are easier than most to flash. If you are a noob, this is where you should start. just make sure you READ TONS about flashing before you flash the first time. Good luck!

I run the latest froyo version of Cognition and absolutely love it. Ive run into small issues with just about every other rom ive ever flashed but with cognition I dont even run into the casual force close. Its just smooth as butter. I would highly suggest flashing an entire rom as typically the kernel is made to work directly alongside that particular rom.
Read up first though or your going to end up with a pretty little paper weight.
Lagfix on stock is stupid.
Reading and comprehension are the best but consider, when you've picked out a rom youtube it and see if an instructional video has been made on how to flash and watch it, twice if need be. I only recommend these because , being a noob( I speak from being one ) you don't know the time frame between steps, and if it sets on one for a few minutes well..it can be a little un-nerving ,anyway ,custom is the only way to go,.
well it would be different if he asked for 2.3.3 lagfix..

New to captivate

I just got a captivate last night and i have unlocked and and rooted it
it has a firmware of 2.1 - update 1
idk if thats the most recent update
i was told i can not update the phone with a t-mobile sim card in it so can anyone post a thread on updated versions and what do you all think is the best rom?
THANKS
There is no "best" rom. It's what's "best" for you. Read the forums and learn to flash 2.2 roms first.
I must warn you, flashing becomes very addictive.

I recommend trying MIUI, the customization is what puts it over the top!
Here are a few different versions of MIUI:
Galnet**What I prefer**
http://www.galnetmiui.co.uk/twooey/v3/Twooey-V3-i897.zip
Prototypes release

MIUI.us
http://roms.miui.us/1.8.12/MIUI.us_captivatemtd_1.8.12_Eng_Deo_ZipA_Signed.zip
Ok ill give it a try..do i have to update to a different version> im running 2.1 right now

I've not been on 2.1 since phone came out. I would use odin one click to goto 2.2 stock. Root it then install cwm and then follow this guide if your going to try Galnet's MIUI.
http://www.galnetmiui.co.uk/content/forum/guides/(guide)-i897-galaxy-s-captivate-gb-bootloaders/
Then just pop the MIUI.zip on root of sdcard and install from CWM.

Wow... so... You should probably READ a lot more before flashing anything, but I'll give you a few hints to get you going:
1) Make sure you understand what a "PBL", "SBL", "Kernel", and "Modem" are and how they are placed/installed in your phone.
2) Learn how to correctly and safely use ODIN (and/or Heimdall).
3) Learn about the various methods of recovery for "soft bricks", and if necessary for your hardware revision, possibly invest in a jig (also learn what a jig is)
4) There are 2 different types/branches of ROMs for the Captivate:
-- Samsung Branch
-- AOSP Branch
Within the "Samsung" types you have:
- i9000 ROMs (like JVP, JVR, JP8, etc)
- i897 ROMs (like JF6, KF1, etc)
Within the "AOSP" types you have:
- CM7
- MIUI
- Other AOSP-based ROMs
Which is "better" is relative. CM7 and MIUI have features that aren't present in the Samsung ROMs, and both offer a bit more customization than the Samsung ROMs. However, only the Samsung ROMs offer GPU accelerated video playback, and they tend to have significantly better battery life than the AOSP-type ROMs. Also the Samsung-type ROMs used to be much more stable than the AOSP branches, but recently, the tide may have turned in the other direction. Some of the low-level radio settings are also unavailable in any of the AOSP builds. And finally, some of the Samsung stock camera features are unavailable in CM7/MIUI.
It really all depends what you want... Do you want closer to stock "open source" Android? Or do you want Samsung's vision of what they think Android should be?
Also, the whole kernel/modem part is dependent on what branch of ROM you plan on running. When using a i9000-Samsung ROM, you pretty much have to use an i9000 kernel and modem. When using a i897-Samsung ROM, you pretty much have to use an i897 kernel and modem. The rules for CM7/MIUI are a bit more vague, but at the very least you'll need to use a CM7/MIUI (most AOSP-type kernels are interchangeable) compatible kernel.
The best advice is really to try them all out and see what you like the most. If you're currently on stock 2.1 (which it sounds like you are), at the very least you should upgrade to some variant of Gingerbread (2.3.4 preferably). You will definitely notice a big difference in terms of speed and functionality. From there, well, it's all really up to you...
OR alternatively, just start throwing stuff on your phone and see what happens. Just PLEASE don't come crying back in the Captivate General forum with a "OMG I bricked my phone!!! Plz help!!!" thread. Fair warning...
Just a suggestion, but become familiar with Odin one click. Make sure your captivate has 3 button recovery, and read, re- read, and read again the directions of every rom before you flash it. Always make a nandroid back up if possible, and read the threads.if you have questions, so did someone else and the answer is probably already out there .use search. Some People will rip your head off if you don't. as far as miui goes .....i was a flashaholic when I got phone. After switching to miui, It is very unlikely that I will ever leave. Best rom ever imho. And it updates every Friday so that satisfied the flashing urge. Usually it gets better with each release. The last couple have been a little rough though. Might want to spend the 8 bucks and have a download jig on standby. Can get it from mobiltech videos. Its worth it though

a very simple and easy way to start with...
2.1 is eclair..
2.2 froyo
2.3 gingerbread..
means 2.1 is oldest and 2.3 is latest in case of official roms..
so obviously new version will hav more features and faster in speed...
so now u can take baby step and install 2.2 ..and use it for few days..and get the feel of it..then again after sometime u can install 2.3...
or else u can directly jump to 2.3....which is gingerbread....u can install stock kf1 on ur phone..its leaked official gb...if u search a bit..u will get it..
then u can use it for a lil while and get the feel of gb stock rom..in the meanwhile u can read xda abt available custom roms..and then install any of them...
coz every memeber here in xda will suggest the custom rom they r using..coz they r lovin the rom then only they r using....like for me..since the time i started flashin..i always used APEX ROM..so i will say its the best....
but again thats just me..
so decision is always urs...
