[Q] Installing MIUI on CM7 - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I am using CM7 on my i9000 and I want to simply try the MIUI.
I have just wanted to make a nandroid backup, install MIUI zip and then restore back to CM7
Will it work, or MIUI uses the custom Kernel?

Just do a data wipe and flash Miui via cwm.
To go back, wipe data again, install the new cm7 nightly, then restore your nandroid.

But doesn't nandroid backup EVERYTHING, including the rom itself? So, shouldn't I restore, and then update the Nightly?

Can't flash a ROM, or restoring a Nandroid

Hello,
I can't flash any ROM. I have the ClockWorkMod recovery. When Flashing a ROM, for example Cyanogenmod, it flashes it in 10 secons, and when I reboot it gets stuck on the lg splash. When trying to restore my anandroid backup witch I made with the same CWM 4.0.0.5, I get an error: Can't mount /system!
What can i do? Do I need making partitions? Are there HBOOTS in lg optimus 2x?
Thanks
update cmw version to 5... that should fix your problem

Really thanks for your reply, but my problem is that i can't even flash a ROM or restoring my own backup I made. How can i update it?? Thanks very very much!
Flash ext4 converter from the recovery, and then flash the rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037751
And I am assuming the backup you are trying to restore is from a stock rom, then flash backtoext3 from recovery and then restore.
Both files are available from the same thread.
Sent from my Optimus 2X using xda premium
And also don't forget to update CWM to v5, install rom manager from market and flash the latest recovery

Ok, so really really thanks for your answer. the backup is from the original LG ROM...does that change something??
Thanks!
Yup, the stock rom is ext3 while cm7 is ext4. Its just two different filesystems.
Sent from my Optimus 2X using xda premium
So, the steps I have to follow are:
1. Flash ext4 converter
2. Flash a new ROM
3. Flash CWM 5.x.x.x with Rom Manager
And, whenever I want to restore my backup, I need to flash before the backtoext3 patch.
Is that right? Sorry for being so stupid!

You need to first wipe data, cache & go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache.
You need to flash backtoext3 only if the backup you are trying restore is from a stock rom or a rom which is using ext3 filesystem.

Ok, so finally I have successfully restored my backup. I flashed the ext3 patch and done. Now I have installed CWM 5.0.1.6 Is this recovery ok?
Now, before doing anything, I want to know what steps do I have to follow to install a ROM.
Even having this new recovery, do I have to flash the 4ext flasheable to install roms like Cyanogen, Thanatos, Miui...?
Thanks!

I am having v5.0.2.0, Check the rom manager if there is an update if not than that recovery should be fine.
To install a rom you need to wipe data, cache and dalvik cache. After that just flash the rom.
You don't need to flash ext4 zip, because ext4 based roms will automatically convert the system to ext4.

Thanks, normally, how long does it take to flash a Cyanogenmod nightly? It took me 20s...is that normal??
Just flashed CyanogenMod...AND WORKING!!! So good...Now...The best ROM for you? Thanks!

I think this thread should help you. An all in on place.
- Make sure that you read and understand complete instruction on the particular ROM developer's thread. Pay attention to the possible problems and solutions.
- Nandroid backup. Backup other user data and applications
- Make sure that you wipe/format the /system partition before flashing a ROM. I was not doing this untill recently. Ever since I started formatting /system partion, not getting SODs and BSODs like before
- The CWM you are using now is bit outdated. Look for the latest version - I think it is cwm-5.0.2.7-R2. Check out this link.

[Q] From CM9 to Stock via CWM?

Is it possible to go from CM9 to stock via CWM? Restoring an old rom backup that was stock 2.2 while currently on CM9 or Miui (4.0.4)?
Will that work?
No. You will need to first return to 2.2, then get CWM, then restore your backup.

Don't think so. You'll have to Odin to stock

Not sure remember correctly but I think CM is MTD and 2.2 is not (rfs i think). So going back to stock to get rid of the MTD is nessesary for the backup to work.
Yes... CM is mtd and touhwiz roms are bml. Odin is required but I can't use a computer version of Odin and the mobile version won't convert between mtd and bml. People need to make all roms mtd

It isn't difficult
1 Nandroid Backup (If things go wrong, you should do a backup 4 contacts, messages and apps too)
2 Wipe data, Cache, Dalvik cache and in Mount erase system
3 Flash cm9's Zip for your device
4 Then flash CM9's Gapps that you can find in your rom thread or on wikipedia
5 Meanwhile you''ll attend that the process will finish, make a coffe
6 Reboot without SD if you don't have a Data Plan
7 Enjoy with CM9

[Q] Nandroid Restore CM10 --> ICS

Hi All,
Is it OK or Possible to Nandroid restore my old Stock ICS ROM from CM10 CWM ROM(Recovery) ?
Thanks.
Yes. Done it many times.

You're on a safe kernel, so it will be fine, be aware when back on ics if on stock kernel you need to be careful or install safe kernel.

yeah I guess if he made a nandroid backup of a stock rom.. 99% it has a safe kernel in it.
Thanks for the help guys ... :highfive:

Sorry if I am asking/saying something wrong..will the Nandroid restore work if currently using a different kernel than the backed up one? Read somewhere that current kernel & backed up kernel should be the same for the restore to happen properly..
no.. u can restore the nandroid made on any kernel. just that when the nandroid restore completes the kernel will be that inlcuded in the nandroid
Thanks guys :good:
You may well face bootloop after restore, just clear cache and dalvik from recovery, should clear it fine.

clear cache and dalvik from recovery + format /system
then restore from recovery
(recomended) restore using recovery & kernel you using for backup
works great for me

[Q] Doubt about Recovery (PhilZ and CWM) & wipes

Hi everyone!
Maybe I have a basic doubt, but because I don´t understand, I like have clear this. Yesterday I decided root, replace the recovery and install a custom rom on my Note (N7000). I choose the kernel from PhilZ and install following the recommended method (very easy).
After this all work perfect, I do a full backup of actual system (this is nandroid backup, right?) and after this I install the CM 10.1.3 that also work well. I not rememeber exactly, but following some steps to install this ROM I do before or after install this procedures also: WIPE/DATA FACTORY RESET, WIPE CACHE, WIPE DALVIK CACHE. This procedures are correct?
The device work well, but I have a big doubt because if I boot into recovery I not see anymore the PhilZ touch interface, now I see:
CWM Based Recovery 6.0.3.6
that is other recovery, right? Is normal this behavior? I not understand in what step I change the PhilZ recovery to CWM.
Thanks in advance for all info and help to clear this
This is the CWM recovery same as philz, the difference is that, the version you used before.. It was touch, and after flashing the recovery changes as the CM 10.1 flashed their own kernel...
so it is the same recovery, do not worry
and yes, AOSP/CM roms have their specific kernels, so please do not flash philz on the current recovery...
and one more thing... the process is correct, do a wipe data and factory reset and then format system and preload
Thanks NoteboyTech, yes, I know that work basically like PhilZ, but my main doubt is in what moment of all procedures are installed the CWM Based Recovery. This mean that this CWM are installed in the moment that I install the CM 10.1.3?
Now if I like keep the PhilZ, is safe if I boot again in recovery and install from the .zip file from PhilZ again? or not recommend this?
The wipe: I need made the wipe factory, cache and dalvik before each time that I like restore a ROM or also kernel?
Thanks!!!
You are using a cm rom. Philz kernel Tw doesn't work with cm rom. If you flash philz on cm, phone won't boot.
There is no need to wipe if you just changing the kernel.
If you want the touch recovery, you can install nx kernel which includes philz recovery and is a cm based kernel.

Now I believe that understand a bit more
Perfect. This mean that if I like keep the PhilZ as recovery I need install the nx kernel, right?
Now, if for example in the future I like try one new version or actual version of my stock ROM, is safe to download from Samsung Updates website, install from .zip like I do with the CM, and ready, I have the stock ROM. Is correct?
OK, I not need wipe anything for kernel installations, but yes for ROMs, right?
Only data/factory and cache or also dalvik?
This wipes I need made before install the ROM or after?
Thanks for all!

Thanks!, ah, right, because stock rom´s should be installed using download mode instead recovery mode, right?
And the last: all the native apps from Samsung like SPen, etc, that go with the stock rom, I can download from any place or installed now into the CM 10.1 or future versions of CM? Thanks!

Ups! :S Small detail Thanks!
One more that I detect: when I boot into recovery (CWM-based Recovery v6.0.3.6) I see that the last and bottom line on main screen say this message bellow. Its important this? Thanks!

Today I try make a complete nandroid backup, but can be possible that the CWM Based Recovery 6.0.3.6 don´t have this option?
Some days back, with the PhilZ recovery, I can do very easy.
To restore a nandroid backup I need use the same recovery or the generated files are compatible with all recovery?
????
CWM 6 versions are compatible.. it can be restored using any recovery.
Why can you make a nandroid back on 6.0.3.6?

Thanks nokiamodeln91!, maybe yesterday when I try Im a bit sleepy at night Also in this moment I found a "nandroid" name into the menu.
Have a link to read how backup the IMEI number?
Can be possible that I detect that after I made all these changes (change the recovery, root, install new rom, etc) the Serial number of the device has changed? I can change from any area to the original one?
Option to backup efs is in the philz recovery. Or you can use ktool from the playstore to backup efs. This has to be done as soon as you root. There is no point of backup if the imei has already changed.

No, the IMEI is correct, the change is in the SERIAL NUMBER of the device, not IMEI. This can be fixed writing the correct serial number?
Not sure how to correct the serial number.
Ktool is a good tool to backup efs.
