Alright its ok. Pull battery, put battery in, press and hold down button, press and hold power button while continuing to hold the volume down button, hold both through the lg screen until it comes up to the factory reset press power button screen, press power button twice (it well not factory reset but go into clock work) when in clockwork reflash home-less, and don't do the battery mod.

Hey guys.
I have been a windows mobile user for the longest time and its been a while since my last post. Just bought my Captivate today.
I tried booting into recovery mode but it flashes the att splash screen and boots up normally. If i continue to hold the buttons, the splash screen just flashes off and on again. I really want to root this phone right away.
Anyone know how i can fix this?
I tried looking for this but no one seems to have this same problem. I am sorry if i am repeating stuff. Please forward me to it and delete the thread if you wish.
Thank you

Pull the battery and make sure the phone is off.
Put the battery back on.
Hold the volume up and volume down button, then hold the power button. When the white AT&T screen first comes on, let go of the power button, but hold the volume keys.
does that work for you?
EDIT: and before anyone else chimes in, this thread probably belongs in either general or question and answer.
nope that didnt work either.
I guess i am gonna have to install the sdk and go that route.
as soon as the att screen comes on, i let go of power but hold both volume keys.
it takes about 10 seconds, but eventually it goes into recovery mode for me.
EDIT: Based on you saying it flashes off and on again, it sounds like you aren't letting the power button go.
I tried that too and it just went straight ahead to the boot up animation.
I really want to thank you for you speedy replies.
Any more suggestions, keep 'em coming. I really want to root this phone.

On your home screen, hit the menu button, and then settings. scroll down to about phone.
What is your baseband?
What always works for me is:
turn off.
Power on holding the up and down volume buttons and the power button.
When you see the ATT logo let go of everything.
This always works for me.

Honestly, the SDK is the easiest method.
You should have the sdk installed anyway. It help with installing non-market apps. Install it then enable debug mode on you phone. You can do that in the settings menu under applications> development. Then at the cmd prompt on your pc use this command. "adb reboot recovery" no quotes. The phone will reboot to recovery.

It worked using the SDK method.
Thanks for all the help guys. Love XDA! don't know what I would do without it.
I dont know if I should upgrade the firmware or not. Anyone want to share their opinions on whether it is useful or useless?

I know you've solved the issue but to keep everything in line all cries for help or questions belong in Q&A not General, I even made a thread about it
It also helps being here so when people also have this issue and thinking of posting their question about it here they'll see it.
Thanks

i tried a battery pull and putting it back and going to recovery to factory reset but as soon as i put my battery in my phone starts up. i can enter recovery but the power button doesnt work so i cant press anything.
my warranty is over by a long shot ( had it since it released) so cant return it.

and has this happened to anyone else, just wondering is all if this is common or rare.
thnx in advance.
it has happened to many captivates. search 'captivate power button' on xda.
What ROM are you running on your phone?
Answer to that question has a lot to do with your next steps for software workaround.
One approach; you could read up on ways to clean the power button and see if that works. Or send it off to mobiletechvideos.com and he will fix it for a reasonable fee.

i am running Aocp 5 android 4.2.1
hve been running it for a few weeks now and no problem till now
Okay, start by seeing if you can clean the power button, that may fix it for now. Again, search 'captivate power button' to find some threads about ways to clean it.
With the ROM you are running, I believe you have a version of CWM that allows to use the Cappy's dedicated menu keys, menu, home, back and search, to navigate and select recovery items.
Assuming your power key is stuck on, remove the battery, hold the up and down volume buttons and reinsert the battery to get into recovery. This will allow you to test keys, wipe, and any other function in CWM.
With the phone on and fully booted into JB, go find volume rocker wake in the system setting options and make sure it is active. Hitting the up/down key will wake the screen when it sleeps. Add the sleep/lock toggle to your notification bar menu and you have a way to instantly lock the screen without the power key.
If you still have a bad power button stuck in on position, then you will need to take out the battery to turn it off.
Hope this helps.

This is happening because your power button is stuck in the on position. Did you try to clean it as suggested earlier.
BWolf56, I'm not aware of an app or ROM that completely prevents power up on insertion of battery when the power button is stuck on. If there is such an app, I'd like to hear about it. I think maybe the power switch goes to the broadcom power management chip, so I don't understand how the app could work unless the phone never came on at all. SOD symptoms would be the result.

Oh that would be impossible, the OS isn't loaded so even less the apps
I was suggesting a app to turn off the phone/lock screen. There are widgets for that in the market.

I had a very similar problem with my Epic 4G Touch (Sprint S2) - my phone would randomly reboot, and it kept getting worse and worse. Thought it was the ROM, the overclock, etc. I flashed back to (almost) stock, went back to original clock speeds. Eventually, I noticed that even brushing past the power button would wake the screen, and about 10 seconds later the phone would reboot.
Long story short, I bought a replacement power switch, soldered it in place, and have had zero problems since!
Several eBay sellers offer the switch you'll need.
(They don't include the skills needed to solder it in place. It's a tiny switch - about 4mm x 2mm x 1.5mm, and you'll need a good quality fine-tipped soldering iron and a steady hand. Do you have a friend who's good at soldering?)

well thanks for the reply, but i dont need it anymore. my friend conveniently had a GNex (old) and gave it to me as a present. so i dont use my captivate that much anymore.
I just began flashing my Sprint HTC One with CleanROM SPR 1.5, but it's locked up at the "Installing" section, with the progress bar stuck on the first increment. Before installation, I was sure to wipe and clear out the caches, etc and also checked the md5sum of the .zip file from the developer. I'm not sure what to do!
Please help! Thank you

Most likely you ran just into an issue due the often used aroma installer by amarullz.
This problem is well known and is annoing, but it's all okay. You only need to restart the phone to recovery mode.
Press power and vol down button together, hold them until the phone goes off and kepp on holding until the phone turns on in recovery mode.
Then you can do it all again.
For me a flash needs sometimes 2-5 tries to be successful, some people need more than 10.
Some part of aroma installer is bad, but i can't understand why the developer doesn't solve this issue...
As developer i stand behind my work, even if it's a job without financial benefit.

Thank you! This was what I was so scared about: I didn't realize how long I had to hold down power, and I didn't know I had to hold down Vol Down at the same time. What a useful bit of knowledge! (Alas, I'm spoiled by user-removable batteries).
In the meantime I think I determined the cause of the issue - I went back a dialog box and this apparently can cause some hangs in the installer. I went through again without trying to go "backwards" in any of the menus, and everything worked!
Again, thank you so much!
Just to add a bit more info:
I've found it much easier to hold the power button until the phone turns off, then let go press volume down. Holding them both down together often made my phone select the "reboot phone" option when it finally got to the bootloader.
Additionally, using the volume and power buttons, as opposed to the touch screen, seems to help keep Aroma stable. It's not foolproof, but I've had more successful attempts this way. It is a pain when you have to make a bunch of selections though. I honestly wish devs stopped using it at this point. Ever since ROMs started being released with Aroma I've always had problems with it. I avoid it as much as possible, but for the most part that's not an option with the One
So I installed HTC_M7's CM10.2 ROM, after using it for a little bit, i decided to go back to sense. So I got rid of that and installed this rom. It worked fine after I booted up, except that none of my apps where downloading, so I decided to restart, now my phone is stuck in either the shutdown, or boot up animation.
I tried holding the power button but it's not doing anything, also tried pressing the power and volume down button.
Right now I'm just waiting for the battery to die, it was at 38% when I decided to restart.
Any suggestions? I was going to see if I could get into recovery and wipe everything after the phone dies and charges a little bit, then add more charge and RUU it.
EDIT: I have clockworkmod recovery.
EDIT: #2, tried the, shine a bright light on the phone and press the power button thing, and it worked, I don't really get how that fixes it.
