My phone still hangs and freezes-HELP!!!!! - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ever since upgrading to 2.3.3 I've been having random freezes that usually end up in needing a battery pull or pressing down on the power button until the phone reboots itself. i already did a fcty reset. my firmware is ZSJV6.
Another thing of note is that it seems to be the UI or input process that hangs or dies or something. Because whatever's running keeps running I just can't make the phone respond to touch or any of the hard buttons. what do u think is wrong?

Try 2.3.4 or move to a custom rom.
Sent from my sgs
kernel: galaxian
Rom: jetpack

2.3.4 is not yet released in asia. what do u mean move to a customrom?

root it using CF Root then use a custom rom

I'm rooted already

Thats good... now dump your stock firmware and move over to a Custom ROM. A custom ROM is a customised version of a stock ROM usually featuring enhancements and better stability.
There are a large number of custom ROMs for the i9000... try out CyanogenMOD or MIUI ROM.... Check out the DEV sections for the links or head over to their respective websites... Have fun

I believe Cyanogen doesnt have a stable build for the i9000 yet.... I'd recommend MIUI... You can also try out the other one's such as Darky's ROM... Go through the features of each ROM to decide which is best for you

im not that techy to be honest. i just follow whatever is instructed of me. can u help me?

I would suggest juwes smart edition, very stable and good and safe. So try it out first and then go to more specialized and hardcore roms like CM7 or MIUI.
Check out this link of Gingerreal rom for all the necessary downloads and flashing instructions.
Basically you should flash stock XXJVP, JVQ, JVR first and then flash a custom kernel like Semaphore or Galaxian and then flash the custom kernel via CWM in recovery.
HOME+VOL UP+POWER Buttons = RECOVERY MODE
HOME+VOL DOWN+POWER Buttons = DOWNLOAD MODE

Flash with Darky'w 10.2RE then you can upgrade it with 10.2.1

they call it deadly rom instead of darky rom because there are millions of post on XDA about ' help darky rom broke my phone' and so on...

anyway if all you want is a basic ROM with good features. then i too suggest romkitchen.org << here you can tailor the rom to your needs and be happy with that. also battery life is top notch with doc's roms.
Thanks peeps

If it's the one included in the kitchen, it is broken with the latest version of froyo. Not sure why. Anyway just download the ginerbread keyboard off the market for free and then select that one and it should work fine.
im getting force close for everything now not just the keyboard .
romkitchen sucks so far . ive never had troubles with darkys rom 9.5 dark core 1.4 . never had a force close or anything like this is horrible . ive tried 3 or 4 different mixtures with romkitchen all end with force close . i am factory resetting prior to installing romkitchen
only reason i wanted to switch was because i had no reception in the country .
sigh

Did you use a stock theme with ZSJPK?
And I see you used a fugumod kernal - There is a note under the fugumod kernal that a non wipe rom is essential. You included it in a wipe rom.
I do recommend cooking up a new Wipe rom, with Hardcore's speedmod kernal for stability, and if you're using ZSJPK, only include a stock theme.

Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
I was running Juwe's 4.3 JVH with a Damian kernel and front cam fix which was pretty damn good
JVK AND JVO are the best in my opinion with all the other ones i had problems like things crashing
jvb even crashed the video driver once.
P.S. imho most bugs and issues are selfmade. Although i 'm not a developer, i would always recommend to do a clean upgrade with wiping caches and factory reset! And you should't rely on titanium backup batches to work properly. User apps might be restored by tb but be careful in regards to system apps.
Biggest problem might be the lack of patience when it comes to restoring data. Do it step by step and do a lot of reading guides and follow them thoroughly. Then you should be fine.
But thats just my amateur point of view.

So far ive used ficeto JVH and its very smooth but not very visually pleasing. Another good one ive heard its Ezbase. But you have to theme it if you want it to look good.

agreed m8 im currently on it, i feel guilty by just thinking of changing it, i dont know what shall i do now, i (have to flash my phone !!) ,
do i need psychotherapy ??
after doing my root research and stuff, when i started to flash custom roms, i did like 5-6 in the first day started with stock GB, after i did CM7, MiUi, Darky... but i didn't get comfortable with neither, so i decided to stay stock for the moment and went with the JVO + CF-Root, definetly a good start for a root beginner (noob)
beware: if you get the flash / root bug, you'll never get over it, its like a f. virus
the best is cm7 but damnn!!! i cant use video call , now on jv9 + fugumod..

Well said mate. I've said more than once on this site that if you install a clean rom over the remnants of old
Roms then don't blame the new rom for any bugs. Make sure it's a totally clean, full flash, then judge.
I've never had a drain problem for example and flashed lots of roms. Not always, but occasionally I do a "full" belt and braces flash which involves format internal sd, factory reset, flash new rom, factory reset. Maybe a bit over the top, but it's prevented problems for me and I've run jv1, a,b,h, and now o after eclair and froyo and loads of custom roms too

ROM: Overcome
If you have the stock kernel and gingerbread, download this file, copy it to the internal SD and go to the recovery menu, (when the tab is off, hold power or lock button and holf the volume up button) then chose intall update and select the .zip that you copy to the internal SD. and then rebot, you will have overcome rom.
Whats on the SGT T859?
the new 10 inch model, runs 3.1 or something.

Suggest you read the Overcome thread in the Dev section and make your own judgement. Personally I am loving the work provided by the Overcome team, but ensure you back up your original factory settings, whatever ROM you flash. Overcome provide some very detailed instructions on how to flash their ROM, which will prob. apply to all ROM flashing.

What is the basic difference in overcome and stock (official) rom. . .
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda premium
Overcome is basically a faster, slicker, more stable version of the stock Samsung experience. Theres also a slew of small adjustments and improvements that combine to make it heaps better. Plus, by installing the Overcome Kernel you get all the advantages of Voodoo sound, overclocking support and a couple of other bits and pieces.
One of the biggest draws for me is that it is on an always-current Gingerbread base ROM and since my Tab's official Gingerbread update never arrived, the jump to 2.3 was amazing. In my opinion, definitely worth upgrading to Overcome.
Also, in future, try to read up around the forum and search for what you're looking for before you post in the forum. That way, you would find the Overcome ROM's brilliant installation guide that can walk you through everything you need to know about flashing Overcome to a Tab.

[Q] I need someone to help me

Hello guys. I'm gonna to buy this phone in 3 days. I have Xperia™ X8 with 2.3.7 and nAa Kernel now so I am not newbie in Custom ROM's and Kernels. I know all what i need about ICS on my current device because in forum is a lot of tutorials..But I didn't find this on Captivate forum so my question is can someone say me the following things?
I want ICS ROM:
I know that I need root my phone sure.
1. Recovery install process is this?? -- Root my phone. Using "Root Explorer" put some files to system and reboot. (This process is from my X8)
2. Which ICS ROM is best?
3. I think that I need new kernel right? If yes which one is best for ICS? (On X8 Custom Kernel has Built-in recovery is it same on Captivate?)
4. Do I need Unlock Bootloader or do something like this??
If someone can put links for ROM, Kernel (If needed), Recovery and guide me how to change my Kernel and Flash ROM?
Please I really don't want to see some answers as "Keep 2.2 if you don't know how to do it"...I really want HELP. I believe that there is someone who can help me.
Thanks.
Sorry for my bad English.
Actually, not quite. I have this little guide that explains it. I hope it helps!
For a couple of your other questions:
-There is no "Best" ROM. The best ROM is the ROM that works best for you. The only way to find that out is to keep trying them out until one of them stands out. Personally, I like CM9 because of the features. But that's just me.
-Once you're on ICS, you don't need to change the kernel. You can, if you'd like. All custom ROMs and kernels come with ClockworkMod recovery
-Galaxy S phones don't have locked bootloaders or fastboot or anything of that nature.
THANK YOU !!! It's really nice guide...but you said that i don't need change my kernel but how can i flash rom from stock 2.2 and stock kernel ?? You said that roms and kernels come with CWM Recovery but on stock kernel i need to install recovery first right? Can i use Rom Manager to install recovery on stock kernel ???

that kernel only exists on your phone as quickly as you can boot into CWM and flash your rom of choice. so answering the first part of your question doesnt matter. it has cwm.
ALL captivate roms come with a kernel. every time you flash a rom it replaces the previous kernel.
Flashing bootloaders is the ONLY way to brick a captivate. Only do it once. Dont unplug your phone durring the 10 second flash. NEVER EVER EVER EVER FLASH "3 button fix" after flashing gingerbread bootloaders. #1 it is NOT needed and #2 it WILL brick your phone. only flashes half the bootloader.
Okey guys, thank you for answers I'm gonna try it on monday when I buy this phone.... Is camera fully working on AOKP Milestone 4 ROM or better is to install Build 31 ??
I want ICS with all working features is there one which has all features working ? If no is Build 31 by Kang good choice for me or you recommend some other ICS ROM?
Yeah I know guys a lot of questions but don't worry this is my last question

It's not hard, just read the tutorials posted here, and you wont have a problem. When I first bought my Captivate, the first day I got it from at&t, I flashed CWM and flashed a custom ROM without any trouble. The first ROM I flashed was Serendipity 6.4, and the dev's made it so easy, they explain everything from start to finish.
But, I highly recommend you buy a Jig before you go and flash anything. search on ebay or mobiletechvideos for a JIG. You can recover your phone from any Soft Brick state that can occur, with a Jig. Just don't go and mess around with bootloaders, if you do something wrong flashing a bootloader, then it might just Hard Brick your phone. If you do need to flash a bootloader, make sure you read everything that the dev posted about installing, then try to do it yourself.
Please, anyone correct me if I am wrong.

[Q] The infamous i9000+Kies problem

Well, I know that it’s a really old thing but I haven’t been able to find an answer in any of the existing threads here or anywhere else on the web.
I am planning to migrate my and my son’s I9000s to ICS. As I’ve understood things the best thing to do is to install the latest official Samsung 2.3.6 first before rooting and proceeding further.
To be able to do this on my phone running 2.3.4 I started with a new install of Kies 2.3.2 on my Windows XP laptop. I had to reinstall the drivers too and then it worked properly.
However, with my son’s phone running 2.2.1 and the same settings, Kies detects the phone, keeps trying connecting endlessly without any result.
Yes, I tried all the usual solutions I could find, the phone is on the standard home screen, USB*connection on Kies, debugging mode off (if I put it on Kies detects this and sends an error message).
Both phones are the same model, age and build.
What could I*still try?
Thank you all inadvance!
Here is my kit containing ezodin, ezbase ROM (GB) and the root kernel, download it, unzip, and read.txt first.....kies is rubbish!
http://db.tt/MOGZx01S
If you want to try slim ROM here is link to website with downloads and instructions
http://www.slimroms.com/
By the way to connect with Odin you need to be in download mode, volume down/home/power simultaneously, you will see yellow triangle, when you plug in usb one of the boxes should turn yellow, then you are connected, any problems post back here
Dont worry about changing firmware first. Just root it using super-oneclick on stock firmware, then flash a kernel such as CF root through ODIN. You cant flash the kernel through stock recovery because recovery is packaged with the kernel in SGS and it wont flash unsigned codes. Now that you have CWM, then flash a ROM such as Cyanogen Mod 9, and then flash a kernel of your choice through CWM (i used devil). Enjoy !
