Problems with power button

Does anyone else have a problem with holding down the power button?
When I hold down the button my Nexus only registers it as pressing it and letting go and usually just turns off the screen. It's quite frustrating when I need to turn off my N1 or set airplane mode, and usually takes half a dozen tries before it actually registers as holding down the button and not just pressing it.
I fear it may be a hardware issue and I will have to return it.

I got the same issue. Not sure if it is soft- or hardware related. Also having problem with waking up. Works well with the track ball so I guess it's the hardware.

I'm really dreading having to send this back to HTC. Everything else on this device has been working normally, but I also have an unlocked bootloader. I'm reluctant to trade it in.

Mine is doing the same thing.
Here's a good test.
Do a nandroid backup, and then flash back to the stock ROM. I haven't done this yet, and am planning to do so this weekend.
If you flash back to stock and the power button works normally, well there you go.
If not, it's a hardware issue.
I will say that I've been using a Desire2Nexus port ROM and it definitely happens more with this ROM than the CM-based ROMs, but that could also be due to the laggy/sluggishness of SenseUI.
I was seeing the same problem in both ROMs of recent generation though. So my gut tells me it's a hardware issue. Flashing to stock and testing it out will be a dead giveaway, though.
HTC has historically been pretty good about replacing known hardware malfunctions. I also bought SquareTrade coverage just in case, though, so I will be getting my money back one way or another.

I've wiped and flashed the last stable CM version. The issue persists. Also, it happens when I'm in recovery as well, so I'm afraid it may be a hardware related issue.
Can I still send this in for replacement if the bootloader is unlocked? When I be charged repairs in that regard?

If your phone can't get into download mode due to it being disabled it looks like your pretty much screwed. You could phone samsung and see if they'd fix it.

If you can get to the AT&T logo part, I'm assuming you should still be able to get to download mode. Did your phone have dl mode before?

Yes my phone could get into dl mode b4 but now it doesn't work any more, phone just keeps on showing at&t logo and rebooting.
When I put the USB lead in the phone does not switch on at all..

the USA models goes into download mode by using the volume up + volume down + power

I'm no expert on the matter but don't you think that since you flashed a Captivate ROM on an I9000 that the home button wouldn't work since the Captivate doesn't share the same home button? Logically I would try looking for what the combo is for the Captivate to get into download or recovery mode. Now, I may be wrong and it may not work if the captivate uses its home button to enter the home button but it's worth a shot.
Edit: I just checked here and it says you hold both the volume up and volume down button while you press the power button. Try that.

With the device off, try holding both vol + & - then plugging in usb cable. Thats how a captivate enters download mode. If flashing the i9000 on captivate changes the button sequence it could not hurt to try.

I understand both your thought pattern and YES this was mine also...
However thus far no combinations have worked, still continually looping the at&t logo.
If I plug in the charger or USB whilst its doing this it kills the device, it wont switch on...
Knowing the different CAPTIVATE button comb. to recovery or download mode would be a big help right now.. also how the buttons would be mapped... i.e Captivate rom. on GALAXY S device?
How would one fix a captivate that was continually re-booting at operator logo start-up? Might be another way to angle this?

Think u are better off paying the guys at samsung or phone repair store to load the right firmware back in if u dont have the 3 btn combo...

try downloading that one click unroot program, plug the sgs into the computer and then force unroot, although the unroot won't work it should then allow the sgs to enter recovery mode.

Unfortunately my PC is not recognising the phone...
Plugging the USB in while the phone is switched OFF does nothing....
lugging the USB in while the phone is switched ON.. Turns it off...
Same things happen when the Charger is plugged in.. Althou the phone seems to still charge!!!

Last resort maybe try heating up the phone like the others did to force download mode?

so any news on this? i too have successfully flashed the captivate rom on my unbranded i9000 the official repair shop i first took it to (mttc <Lithuania>) told me that it needs a new motherboard, and it would cost me 700LTL(270 $us)... kinda sounded like bull****, so a week ago i took it to a private repair shop, they said they had jtag, so i should be hearing from them this week, if not, i'll buy the stupid riff box myself and repair it..
no button combination worked for me, and the symptoms were exactly the same, flashing att, usb kills it etc. etc.
well, my advice would be to keep contacting different local repair shops, and asking do they have a jtag that supports the samsung galaxy s, if they do, the repair shouldn't cost more than 25$, at least thats what I've been told. good luck, and stay in touch, update on your process, cause the number of people flashing the wrong rom on the i9000 is horrifying.
it kinda sux that its so easy to brick the sgs... and its wrong for people to state that "if you have 3button combo enabled, you are safe", well thats just bull****.

No GOOD news as of yet, but I am in the process of to admitting my SGS to a official samsung service centre.. I was also thinking of sending it directly to them for repair...

Still been trying some other things to try and jump-start this blasted thing in the meantime but NOTHING IS WORKING!!!!
I to am thinking about purchasing this riff box or JTAG but it would be for a ONE TIME USE only... Seems like a waste of money when I can just claim a new SGS through insurance only thing is playing the WAITING GAME!!!

Sorry, but ANY phone (or even any electronic component for that matter) is easily bricked if you flash firmware from a completely different device onto it.

well, afaik, its very hard to fully brick a new htc device.
anyway, i suggest you try finding a jtag repair shop first, as samsung will take a lot of time to "repair" it, or even tell you that it needs a new motherboard..

Well, i just hard bricked my phone...
What is the warranty process? I bought my phone from futureshop but its in contract with rogers.
Do i call rogers to replace my phone or do i call futureshop?

That sounds pretty bricked. You could try a jig. However, as long as you haven't done anything to void the warranty (root, flash a new rom/kernel/modem), and you don't need a phone for a few days, go ahead and get a replacement. It's a safer bet. Go to futureshop, and ask if they can replace the phone. Make sure you have receipt, warranty info, etc., and if they can't replace it for you, they should direct you to Rogers.

Erk, its been rooted, flashed and practically everything. If i just play dumb and say i dropped it. Would that work?

Play dumb anyway, but they fix phones all day they aren't gonna take the time to go through every single one and make sure it isn't rooted. Plus they have to take it apart and flash it to fix it ... Thus getting rid of the evidence.

[Q] Stuck booting into Download mode

Okay, so as far as I am able to find... This problem is pretty unique...
I'm running Cognition 4.5.3 with no software issues. I have had this problem since Cog 3...
Most people have trouble getting their phone to boot into download mode, but NOT ME!
My phone randomly (I can find absolutely no cause or trigger and I'm not really a novice at Android) will shut itself off. Now normally I would not have an issue with this, but when I go to turn the phone on... it boots straight to download mode, and no key combo or anything will avoid it. So I have been testing this out and I can reboot the phone from the enhanced power menu, I can boot into Recovery from enhanced power menu... But when the phone shuts off or when I shut it down, the ONLY way that I can get it to power on correctly, is to plug the phone in and wait for it to show that the phone is charging. Then I can power it on normally...
Now, this issue arose the same time that my phone began to refuse to be recognised when plugged into a computer via USB... and at times the USB debugging and USB connected notifications will remain in the notification bar until I reboot the phone...
Naturally, my first instinct was to try and restore to stock... But since no computer will recognize my phone (even with fresh drivers installed) I cannot use odin to flash to stock.
So to summarize my problems:
1. My phone will not be recognized by a computer. (USB device not recognized)
2. My phone randomly shuts itself off. (Not a big deal, I can live with that)
3. My phone ONLY boots into download mode unless plugged into the charger (Incredibly frustrating when I am not at home or I don't have my car charger)
4. USB debugging and USB connected notifications stick around until phone is rebooted. (Using enhanced power menu. Again, I can live with this minor annoyance)

have you tried reflashing that rom...or trying another?
it could be the random shutdown issue that some cappys have paired with a failing usb port.
try changing roms.

Hehe... I tried a different rom for two weeks and had similar and/or more problems...
Reflashing doesn't help either.
I've tried my best to troubleshoot this on my own, so I'm not shutting down your attempt to help. Just letting you know I have tried it.
I hadn't heard about a failing USB port problem... I'll read up on it.

like i said could be a short or something in the usb port...or somewhere in the hardware. if you experience this problem across different software then it has to be a physical defect someplace. cause if it were software related it would fix once you flashed something different...
you can try for a warranty replacement, that requires a little loose morals. you will have to do something to cause it not to boot, or only boot to the at&t screen otherwise they will have proof of root and/or custom rom and void your warranty. once thats accomplished mention some crap about kies failing and they should replace it.

Hmmm... a few months back my original USB/Charging cable broke and for a couple of days I was forced to use a generic MicroUSB cable to charge my phone... Could that have cause a short/damage to the port?
My phone does not have warranty as I bought it refurbished. :'(
(Plus my morals aren't that loose.)

Had a similar issue, eventually determined that it was a short in this usb port and did a warranty return. (Only when plugged in could I turn on, etc.)
If that isn't an option for you, you could try flashing CM. For some reason, the cyanogenmod build won't let the phone charge when off. ( Automatically powers back up once the juice flows.)
I flashed a nightly and somehow, magically, my phone would power back up normally ( but wouldn't turn off, unless plugged in without power. So strange!)
Even more weird? I flashed back to stock and the new powering and rebooting stuck. The short wasn't fixed, my phone simply seemed to reverse the problem.
Plus, you would be using cm.

I don't want to leave my nice DG Rom though.
Since I have determined that it is a hardware problem... I think I'm just going to live with it for a few more weeks until I can afford to go ahead and buy the newer build of the Cappy... (Might even wait until the SGSII comes out.)

You should be able to get warranty replacement, just make sure the device is in a stock condition when you take it in!

Okay so I called them and let them know what the phone was doing and they tried to send me to samsung to have them repair the phone...

I now hold in my hands a shiny new 1102 build Cappy... Took it to my local device service center and explained the random shutdowns and the booting into download mode and they replaced it no questions asked!
Now to get Cog 5b2 on here.

Cappy power button fail

so yesterday my power button decided to freak out and stop working. I had been using the phone just fine ten minutes prior. I thought I felt it vibrate in my pocket so I took it out to see and there was a notification that Amazon app store had an update. I allowed the update and saw the power menu pop up as I was putting it back in my pocket. I hit the back button and put it in my pocket without looking to make sure the power menu closed. Bout 20 minutes later I check my phone and the power button won't turn the screen on. I pull the battery and when I put it back in the phone boots automatically. I tried booting into recovery from ROM manager and it just applied update.zip (I think, cuz that's the first option on the menu iirc) and proceded to reboot. The button itself seems to work fine. It isn't stuck in and it pushes in and out like normal. I tried cleaning around it with an alcohol wipe with no results.
The phone thinks the button is pushed in but why doesn't the power menu just keep spamming? I am running miui and it had an option to use the volume rocker to turn the screen on so that's what i'm doing for now.
Is there a way to use recovery so I can see if this is a software issue? To me it seems like if it was hardware the power menu would keep poppong up, but i'm no expert.

EDIT: another update for Amazon app store. I applied the update and the power button worked a few times to turn the screen on and off and even a couple times to bring up the power menu. I rebooted thinking my problem was solved but nope. It does work sporadically tho. I tried uninstalling Amazon app store completely when this first happened but it didn't help anything. Might be totally unrelated and purely coincidence.

Yeah that would be ideal. Warranty expired bout a week before this happened. isn't that how it's supposed to work?

Call Samsung, they will help. They unbricked my phone for me !! Of course, they did a complete wipe, An mine was several months out of warranty !

I brought it in, said somethings wrong with the phone (he didn't even look at it) they gave me a loaner CrackBerry, and new phone will be waiting for me on Monday. Already have my ROM files waiting on my desktop...

thats actually completely irrelevant.

update:
i figured that if it was a software problem that i could flash back to stock and my power button would be back. well, i odin 1clicked back to stock and it still dont work. now i need to flash back to miui so i can use the volume rocker to wake the phone up but i cant get into download mode. these methods ( http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/Putting_the_Phone_into_Download_Mode ) dont seem to work. number 3 got me into download mode to flash stock and now it just boots normally. number 4 brings me to android recovery 2e. any tips besides making a jig?
this is a bummer man, my phone takin a dump on me right after my warranty expires.
update #2: called att and it turns out i had 6 days left on my warranty. brought it back and got a refurb.
