Search button function remapping? - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

Hi guys, I wanna remap the capacitive search button on my Milestone so that it opens up the Message app instead of opening the search. I txt a lot so would rather map that button to a function that I use more frequently, rather than something that I barely use at all.
I know that if you have ADWSettings installed, you can go to "General Behaviour" and there is a setting to remap "Home button binding".
However, there isn't one for Search button. Does anyone know how to change it?

In CM7 you can change it via menu. What ROM are you using?

i'm using TelusLite v5.2.
I would flash to CM7 if I could, expect that the kernel for Froyo doesn't work too well for me since I have wifi problems and other connection problems like many people have. That's why i'm staying on Eclair coz the kernel is a lot more stable.

I'm using the kernel suggested in CM7 thread and it is working without any problems (except end-call-freeze).

is the kernel ur using for Froyo or Eclair? I doubt the kernel is Froyo based, since installing CM7 automatically flashes the Froyo kernel if I'm not wrong.....
Also, I don't wanna change roms. I'm really happy with the current one i'm using, it's super fast and stable. I wanna use it for a little longer before I switch. I just need some sort of tweak or app that can change the mapping of the search button....

I think there might be an app in the market that allows you to remap all buttons. It requires root I think
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App

do you know the name of the app? I've searched for ages and couldn't find any. I already have root, I just need the name of the app or a tweak that I can use...

There is an app, but its for HTC Hero only AFAIK. I havnt looked at the app for a almost a year so i dont know if its still there.
I think this guys developed the app. You may contact him on how he did it. Maybe someone can port it to the Milestone.

Power Control Widget MOD in Stock Froyo

Hello,
I have been using CM for the last months, and now that the stock froyo rom is here with sense, I was decided to give it a try.
One of the things I have gotten used to in CM is the power control widget with 2G/3G options. I feel like I cant live without that right now, so I am trying to get it back. Has someone being able to do this?
I donwloaded the mod from here, and flash it using rom manager:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/3625-new-power-control-widget-with-one-click-2g3g-toggling/
But no luck, after restarting androud would freeze up after 5 seconds.
Any help? Thank youi!

I'm thinkin the same thing. Guess they have to sort out a new and updated app.
It isn't just that simple... guys at CM modified phone and settings apk for this to work... you can't just replace those two files here in stock FroYo! There are many dependencies. Besides you would at least have to deodex stock ROM but that's just the beginning...
I suspect it needs APIs only present in cyanogenmod. But, perhaps if the API for toggling 3G is discovered (it must be there as there's a HTC widget for this), one could modify the default power control widget.
You mean API call? I doubt that stock HTC ROM has that. Does AOSP have it? From the original author in CM thread you can see that he was waiting for Google to implement that call but they weren't so he modified settings.apk and phone.apk to allow that call...

The HTC ROM must have it (or something similar), since it has a widget for 3G enable/disable. Whether it's accesible or hidden is a different question. And AOSP doesn't have it, obviously.

The call might have the same name, but it calls different aspects of setting. Only that way the same software would produce two different results using the same action on two different ROMs (namely CM and stock HTC). This sounds logical.
Google "switchpro" it is just like the CM froyo power widget but more customizable.
And then what?
We know those widgets but we are talking here that they don't produce the same result on different ROMs... namely CM and stock HTC's.

Where is that widget? does it really switch from 3G to 2G in one click?

I tried it, but when you clicked on the 2G/3G switch icon it takes you the settings, it does not switch in one click, not as good as CM power control widget

[Q] What features would you like to see in a rom for your thrill?

Just to get used to the android OS dev side I am going to attempt to blend Meego/Maemo features with android. I will be using the V10k firmware as a basis.
I'm curious as to features you may wish to see in a rom. My main goals are:
Tri-screen functionality: Custom home, Apps, Running apps (Similair to Meego)
Customizable folders for the app screen
Onestop Keyboard (Swype, switch between qwerty and T9/numeric style)
3d functionality remaining
Possible Debian install
Removal of ALL spare apps. If it isn't required, it's gone.
EDIT:
Possible extra features
Option to uninstall apps from app screen via long press.
Option to hide/lock apps
EDIT (Final):
PROGRESS: Android is a surpisingly easy OS to work on and there is a LOT of devel to look at in terms of starting points for coding. I currenty have a debian distro runningwith the android OS. Apt-get works fine, however there is not enough space install any application. This Rom may either be out very soon, or depending on memory issues my be impossible without relying on an SD.
Unlocked tether and wifi hot spot
I'm most concerned with battery longevity. Don't know if you'd call that a feature, but to me it's one of the most important parts.
Wish List for new ROM on LG Thrill
I love this Thrill, for the most part, but I wish that the Phone app, where you see the
Dial, Call Log, Contact and Groups, would work same way as the Stock Android does... basicaly, take out the Groups and put Favorits.
This Group to me is very slow every time I click on it takes 5 to 10 seconds to load.. and then I have to presse the Favorits... which I use the most... so..
Yes, I have about 1700 contacts on my list, but even with just a just contacts, this buttons GROÜPs is very slow.
Also, I wish that the Flash on teh 3D camera mode would work, because right now, only in 2D mode is that the Flash works... I think it is just a setting in some internal files or on the Camera apps that blocks the Flash when in Video or still pic.
Thanks and let us know if these changes are possible or not.
Ron
WIFI Unlock and tether: I belieive its been done on other roms so it should be no problem
Battery: I will see what I can do. The ROM will just be a bare bones OS so there should be very little to eat up the battery.
Contacts to favorites and camera flsh: I'll have to look into this and let you know.

There is a reason behind the flash not working during 3D. They blocked it because the light from the flash messes with the 3D camera. Sure this could be a feature still, just saying this doesn't work for a good reason.

I was actually thinking on waiting for the Gingerbread update before starting. The update should be coming anywhere between novemeber and the end of december.
If I wait, then it will give me a bit more time to get familiar with android as an OS andcome up with various way to get the maemo/meego/android mix feel just right. Progress has been fairly fast however. I'm still having memory issues with the debian however. Also, the UI get very buggy. I might just look into utilizing some outside programs.
How would you guys feel if I outed the stock home and keyboard and replaced it with someothing like GO launcher and keyboard?
As long as the keyboard has the speak to text capability, because although mines rooted with thriller, i don't like using swype just to have that option.. it should be on the default keyboards too.

Something else that would be nice is the ability to reboot into recovery. Not a big deal but a nice feature.

Maybe Undervolting, anything to help battery life... patiently waiting for the Gingerbread update to arrive for the Thrill
The reboot option is actually a great idea Ill look into that, I probably will not have an undervolt OR even an overclock option as Im sure it will require a custom kernel. Kernel are something I rarely play with and when I do it's only a temp thing.

The reboot option is used in thriller, oops wrong reboot. I think there was a reason the reboot to recovery didn't work, I remember reading about it in thriller thread.

[Q] Apps closing instead of running in background

I'm experiencing something I didn't have before.
Applications gets closed instead of keep running in background when they get minimized for any reason, either if I press the home button or I get an incoming call.
An annoying example is receiving a call while using GPS navigation: after the call screen comes out the navigation software is closed and when I try to resume it, it will start as a new launch.
I've tried some search, and I understand could be something related to android memory management. But I'm not such an expert, and I don't see thing like this here in the SGS forum, which is (I think) still good enough as a device to be able to manage a call and a navigator both running together. Plus, I didn't have this before.
I'm on 2.3.3 JV3
Thanks.
Same problem here 2.3.5 jvs

I've only experienced this with games, I think it might be because apps/games are not optimized for Gingerbread
Well it seems I'm not alone.
Any suggestion is welcome.
Well if ypu arecrooted then flash semaphore kernle and then install semaphore tool.
Then change ram settings to mulitasking 32 mb from the semaphore tool app.

Did you change ROMs? Kernels? Anything? Somehow your RAM settings must have changed.
V6 Supercharger script can also accomplish the same thing, in case anyone needs a solution but wants to keep their current kernel.

Well, I can say this behavior appeared after upgrading to stock (official/kies) 2.3.3 (CF-root ed as the previous).
Honestly I can not state from what change depended from.
Anyway, just my humble point of view after facing that, this thing could open a nice discussion on android memory manager, and the strategy/philosophy above.

There is plenty of information regarding Android's memory management—on this forum and abroad—if you're interested in learning.
Did you upgrade from Froyo? If so, that would be why.

This means that Froyo is better in memory usage, at least for the SGS, I guess.
I simply didn't take care about that when decided to upgrade, thinking "SGS is powerful enough". Think I'll have to investigate.
Anyway thanks for all your support.

[Q]Disabling lockscreen

Hello xda,
After a few weeks with my rooted nook touch, I have come to realize how annoying the DRAG TO UNLOCK screen is. Is there any way to skip this and go straight from screensaver to homescreen/book/whatever-you-were-doing? Already scoured the google and this forum and can't find anything.
Thanks in advanced!
yeah, that would be nice if the lockscreen/screensaver could be completely disabled!
I use No Lock by BoD http://www.appbrain.com/app/org.jraf.android.nolock It has a widget for toggling the lockscreen too. I use it on all my android devices that don't have a rom with it built in. I wasn't sure if it would work with the nook touch but it works like a charm. I'd be nice to have a custom rom for the touch that has it built in. Maybe if cm7 gets running on it.

Thank you!
The problem of this utility is that it's always running as service and take some resources.
If I kill it from services keylock starting to work.
Think must be another ways - smth like disable lock in sys settings via adb.
If you're rooted with nook manager just use the nook touch mod manager and under the configure mod option you can disable the drag to unlock and also have a customized banner with your name and number below.

I know this is an old thread, and the Nook Touch Mod Manager fix DOES work if you have it installed, but as someone who just recently re-enabled the two part unlock, let me just mention that it is actually a useful feature. I don't know how many times I have pulled my Nook out to a random page, or random menu selection because the button got bumped whole it was in my pocket. Luckily, no random changes happened that were irreversible. It would really have sucked if I had managed to out it in black text on a black background, for example, and knowing my luck, it's amazing that I didn't.
So that's my two cents' worth. You can disable it, but it is actually quite useful, and speaking from experience, I recommend against doing it.

Possible to unroot a custom rom for the 4x HD?

I'm getting sick of the lag on my 4x. Camera tags so long the moment has past, messaging crashes 50% of the time, needing the recent tasks to be brought up and cleared before it will work again, browser is infuriating, and whenever anyone calls, the phone will ring and vibrate, but the screen will take so long in bringing up the 'answer/reject' options that sometimes the caller has rung off before I've even had a chance to answer!
This is on the most recent official 4.1.2
I know there's loads of roms available to me, but I need an un-rooted one, as I use the barclays banking app a lot for my business and it won't work on a rooted device.
Is it simple to just turn off the root mode on a custom rom?
Are most of them quite stable nowadays?

i'm almost sure you can't have a custom rom without root. try using some launcher to get your phone smoother like nova or adw and some task killers like clean master.
AFAIK, Omni is not rooted. You have to install SuperSU separately.
Also OP, this isn't the adequate section of the forum and the title of the thread is confusing too.
Even if you flash a rooted rom, the su app should give you an option to unroot (deleting the su binaries).. However, by doing this you'll lose some rom's features, which work with su permissions.. BTW, @laufersteppenwolf, maybe it's better to move this thread in Q&A section

RootCloak looks a great idea! Exactly what I need!
I'm assuming most users (those of you who replied) don't find your phones as unusable as mine with your custom roms installed?
