I own one of those XTC Clip's if you are not one of the other 9 people who could get one, My advise if you want to take this phone up a level then purchase one.
First off create the gold card via the XTC Clip, this way it produces 2 files on the micro sd card which are needed for that phone connect the phone to the clip with that gold card in your phone, once done it will flash the phone for you and in one neat package it will also allow you s-off your phone, from that phase you can then download the following file http://www.mediafire.com/?yfsm6wk2lgyxj9s
once your phone is back to normal copy that file to your new gold card and boot into the bootloader and it will install that for you, you should then have custom recovery, now backup your existing rom, otherwise it is a real pain to get back if you don't like the custom firmware you choose after, I know first hand. I will post different roms as i get chance but I am now currently going to start to find a solid way to root the uk firmware
ok well this update includes the chance of an actual root with a stock o2 rom,
after successfully s-off the htc salsa, I installed the custom firmware recovery as above, from there i installed some custom chinese firmware but found it did not support google by any means, I didn't backup my original rom so I had a bit of work to get an o2 rom back onto the phone, From there i installed superuser and then busybox, I found that busybox forces superuser to close, today i have tried the ginger break exploit, again this closes super user, I took out the battery after 15 mins, took out the sd card and replaced with the gold card, at which point i installed the apks via the custom firmware recovery tool, when the phone loaded i ran z4root and chose the temp root, then ran gingerbreak again, this time super user did not close, but it fails, so i have then gone back and retried z4root and put permanent root and it seems to have worked. however after trying to install busybox, it just gives an error saying device not rooted, still in testing but z4 does seem to act like it grants root access, still in testing and will update as soon as this stock rom is rooted

root on the other hand is a no
Once everything is working and root is sorted i will post my workings, so there is no need to pay for anything, you may need an xtc clip unless you would be happy testing a formatted micro sd card with the files a xtc clip generates in your phone
Z4ROOT shows as if it has rooted the phone but not one root app confirms, when i installed root checker, that confirms the phone is not rooted, but does state that superuser is in the right place, this morning i had to recover from a previous back up too as the clock seems to be playing up and I had noticed some apps not working quite right after the z4root and gingerbreak tests.

he maybe thought that xtc clip does the root
very true with the thread been progress with xtc clip.
I do have to say the root on this phone is becoming so what of a head ache trying so many different work arounds but when i am off for a day next i will test some more options
Does the clip require a battery or can I use the USB cable to fit via pc?

i did find i had to mess around with it quite a bit before i got the s-off, still been working on rooting i got close today but then for the short while i thought i had done it as a temp, everything on my phone seemed to freeze or hang up
ok diag screen was running, went into the screen and selected DIAG in red.
goto service DIAG 1.00 screen, hit the fb button on clean S58 and then it takes 10secs till reboot.
then still s-on!
tried numerous of times now with no luck!

I think when i put the guide together i kinda overlooked just what i did and assumed others would be just as experienced, I am off on thursday so will have a play then and see if i can put something together to cover all the steps.
i got my clip weeks ago but havent had time to play with(mostly cause my gf uses the salsa and doesnt have a secondary phone)
but have some time this week and will work with it and also see if root can be achieved
root can be gained already has been try under the root and recovery thread for it.

The micro USB charging port on my wife's D4 just died. I received the warranty replacement from VZW. I need to return the old D4 to stock.
Battery is dead and can't charge via USB. I bought the D4 inductive charge door from VZW, and will buy a powermat to charge it, so charging it should not be a problem.
I did a search on this, and found various threads for dead USB ports, but not a solution for what I need.
QUESTION: How can I unroot, return to stock ROM and recovery, and re-lock the bootloader without USB access? I know there are various apps I can use to transfer files to the device via wifi, but is there a ZIP file I can flash with Clockworkmod Recovery to re-load stock ROM, unroot, re-lock bootloader, and re-load stock recovery?

Assuming you are successful in getting your D4 charged, following these steps SHOULD get you back to a stock unrooted phone without the use of the USB port. Make sure you have backup up anything you don't want to lose before you do this.
1. Go in to safestrap recovery, delete any ROM slots, and boot back into your stock ROM.
2. Open up the safestrap app and select uninstall recovery.
3. Uninstall the safestrap app.
4. While you are still rooted, use a file explorer and delete any incriminating leftover files (nandroid backups, etc.)
5. Install and run Ginger Unroot from the Play Store (Full disclosure: I have never actually used this app). Costs 99 cents.
6. After Ginger Unroot does it's thing, check to make sure Superuser is not longer installed on the phone.
7. Boot in to stock recovery and perform a factory reset.
Honestly, I would probably just skip step 6 and manually delete superuser. It's pretty unlikely they will really be looking to see if you rooted it since you're returning it for a hardware issue. Also, according to another thread on XDA, rooting the D4 triggers some sort of check that cannot be undone. If true, unrooting your phone won't help.

Do you really think so? As since ics I have not rooted my for as I have bad luck with the ear piece speaker in my past d4...

Just my personal opinion so take it for what it's worth. I've never actually had to return a phone myself. But, I have yet to hear of someone being turned down for a warranty repair/return because their phone was rooted. And I do know someone personally that returned their D4 under warranty for a faulty screen that was rooted and running a custom ROM and they never said a thing. I'm guessing the only reason they would look into it being rooted was if you soft bricked it, wouldn't boot, something like that where they suspect it was something you did to cause it.

Update: I have not been able to test the above directions yet because no local stores seem to carry the inductive charging mat (I've tried Verizon Wireless, Sprint, Radio Shack, and Best Buy).
I will buy the charging mat online, then update thread with outcome once it arrives.
Update 2: the PowerMat that I ordered on Amazon arrived today. Unfortunately it is not compatible with the Droid 4 inductive charging case (Droid 4 requires QI, PowerMat is not QI).
I ordered a QI charging mat, and it arrives Monday. I'll report progress then.

So the inductive charger arrived last Monday. It worked! Device is all charged up despite the non-functional USB port.
Rooted device when it was on GB, then the OTA update brought it to ICS (which removed root).
Here's where I'm at:
- no root (but superuser still installed, and can't be removed)
- stock recovery
- broken USB port
Here's what I've tried:
- Ginger Unroot did not work
- Can't remove superuser from Google Play
- Can't remove superuser from settings/apps
- Can't remove superuser with Root Explorer (no longer have root, so I can't acquire root privileges)
- Can't remove superuser with Titanium Backup (no longer have root, so I can't acquire root privileges)
Given lack of USB, and lack of root, any ideas how I can remove Superuser and restore to stock?

Like previously stated, its prolly going to get tossed into a refurb bin where it will under go fresh flash of firmware after some little asian will replace the speaker and usb port. I wouldnt stress it.

Gotcha. I just want to avoid getting charged the $300 because they see it was rooted. Would be lame since the device's mechanical USB port failure was completely unrelated to the device being rooted.
Has anyone returned a device to VZW that is still rooted? Did they charge you the $299?

i have previously unlocked bootloader and rooted my device using the Hasoons all in one tool kit and then had been using ard 12.1.
I then fancied trying the latest GE 4.3 release (stock) which i downloaded and flashed and all seemed fine however when i went to check root was still there i have the icon but get a message saying that there is no su binary installed. I have tried to use the toolkit again to go back the root procedure in the hope i can re-install what ever is missing however for some reason now the tool kit comes up with an error message in the box saying waiting for device or device not recognized.
I have tried to sort the problem but now feel i am just going round and around in circles and really dont have the knowledge to put it right as im quite new to the flashing and modding side and dont fully understand all the terminology, im sure its probably something really simple to fix for those who know how so would really appreciate some advice.
My overall aim would be to be running the stock rom (or might even try the new arhd 4.3 ge) with root so that i can then use the volume + to wake mod as i find this really usefull as my power button is quite depressed and hard to use.

You have no clue, or maybe you do, how lost I got trying to root my HTC One. This is all new to me, but this forum has helped massively. I found that the supersu zip I had was the older version when I already had 4.3 uploaded before rooting. This community rocks!

Hi there, Im new to the rooting world, I have a htc one m7 from sprint trying to sim unlock it, as far as I know I unlocked the bootloader, tampered it, and rooted, but no access to super user so I can sim unlock it. I downloaded and installed this App that you mention, but still keeps saying no binary updated, and with this 4.3 version says there was an error installing superuser. Please help, I dont know what to do.
I was having this same issue on my Note 2 (4.3). I seem to have found a way to restore root that may help you as well.
I think this issue may be caused by the SU app & binary updates. Uninstalling the updates has restored root for me.
Go to:
Settings > More > Application Manager > All > SuperSU > Uninstall updates
(menu options may be slightly different on other devices)
This will roll back SuperSU and hopefully restore your root access.
Let me know if this helps.

Hi guys, thanks for the forum and i hope to become a part of it. I've been under so much stress since yesterday, my galaxy s3 (on EE in the UK) for the first time decided it's data was corrupted yesterday after my battery died, never done this or anything like it before, and it wouldn't let me access the phone itself unless the data was reset.
I had a lot of very precious pictures in my gallery from the weekend, which unfortunately chose not to backup to google+ for the last few days, even though it always has up until recently. All night/day i've been trying to figure out and get software to recover these photos, which i think is possible as i did it a long time ago on a blackberry, but not android yet. I'm just hoping it can be done so the photos aren't forever lost, the other stuff gone doesn't bother me so much.
The guide i'm following (here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...de-internal-memory-data-recovery-yes-t1994705) says it needs to be rooted first, and i can't even get past step 1. I've only ever rooted my old galaxy S1 (which worked back then) but i can't seem to get the S3 to do it. And now my phone also believes there's no sim card in and i get no signal now.

though i think i need a newer PDA file to flash my i9305 with. I'm on the EE network running 4.3 jelly. It installed Super SU but root checker says it still isn't rooted.

if you are running on 4.3 then you are not following the right guide to root...
use THIS ONE instead... if it fails to root use the workaround part, i used it and worked....used the workaround to install custom recovery and then flashed chainfire zip from his website and updated SU and worked.

I put the Root_SuperSU.1.02-Busybox.1.21.0.zip on the internal SD and tried that too.
Which is the chainfire zip you're talking about, could you possibly link it? I don't really get what you mean by custom recovery, do you mean it's the same as flashing the Busybox thing from recovery mode?
And yeah it still boots up normally...
use that tutorial to install a custom recovery...then install this SuperSU - http://download.chainfire.eu/396/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.94.zip?retrieve_file=1 - flash it in custom recovery....after that update app with playstore and should work.
but i suggest you get it to a specialized shop to get your photos back...

I had SuperSU installed, plus a few other apps, but then all of a sudden I got an error message when trying to open SuperSU saying the binary was missing, so I downloaded a root checker which said I wasn't fully rooted! After looking on the forums to find a solution I relocked my boot loader and unrooted the phone. Trying to find a stock RUU for my phone ( unlocked Europe version ) was a bloody nightmare. Also getting it to install on my phone was a pain, but probably more to do with my computer having a slow moment.
Is it really worth all the hassle when I can all go wrong in a couple of days ?
Don't think I'll be re routing again any time soon

when it's flashed correctly from recovery it will not just go away

This is a rom issue not a root issue. Could have also been an issue with the kernel. To be honest if you dont really use the root functions then there maybe no need for you to have it. To be honest most people dont really need root. They just wanna seem cool with some things they can show off on their device instead of using it for anything important or handy. I would advice to judge for yourself. Take the extra options/security risk and weigh it against remaining stock which has less options/secure.
I agree with the previous post, if you don't know what it is, you probably don't need it. As far as SuperSu disappearing, it sounds like either you didn't install it correctly or something changed. The ideal way to install SuperSu is to install via the recovery. And even so, if you reinstall your OS, you will need to reinstall SuperSu. Software does not simply disappear, something had to be done to hasten it's departure. An easy fix to your issue would have been to download the SuperSu zip package from http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu, and install it via your recovery. What I personally don't like about locking a bootloader is that now it says TAMPERED at the top of the screen.
Your issues seem to be with the restoring to stock process which HTC do make a bit convoluted, triggered by the root error not rooting itself.
Now to answer your question: My main reason for rooting is I want to take fine grained backups. Second is lots of clever people have come up with mods and improvements I like to install over the stock Sense ROM.
If you don't need anything that needs root, no need to root. Simple as that.

if you want RUU search @ htc1guru.com with firmware/software version
flash same firmware again + flash custom recovery + flash SuperSu it will resolve your problem
Hopefully someone has some input on this.
My phone is a 626s, a32eul on T-Mobile. I've had this phone since it came out and really grew to liking it, but lately it's been nothing but a headache. I had it rooted with Kingroot (was the only root at the time that worked) since I got it, but never went any further because there wasn't any ROMs available at the time. Recently I started messing around again and decided to reset and try to upgrade to Marshmallow, but I seem to have caused more problems with it than I anticipated.
I've lost the stock recovery completely, currently have TWRP installed. I've tried to remove Kingroot but no matter what I try it won't go away. I followed a replacement procedure from Supersu, but Kingroot is still present. None of the uninstalls seem to work, tried deleting all related files that I could find with root explorer but it still comes back. Factory reset and wiped everything several times, still there . .
My main reason for all this is to load a de-bloated ROM ( I only have 8G of storage, less than 1G after all the useless BS apps update themselves ) I've turned off all the auto-update stuff on the phone and Google, but it still manages to loop back and download everything anyhow.
Would anybody have some input on this? I'd like to get it back to when I took it out of the box for the first time so I can start over, or at very least get rid of King for good so SU can take over? I've found a couple image files for the stock recovery, but all seem to be corrupted or not correct for this phone.

And now I think I've done it. Was messing around in TWRP, I think I fat-fingered the system option when wiping, have no operating system now . . I think my frustration has gotten the better of me on this one.
I might have this thing finally figured out. Seems when I upgraded my laptop to Win10, I never re-installed C++ to keep the RUU file running. I must have sobered up enough because its downloading the file right now after 8 hours of smashing my face on 2 keyboards . .
Yes.
re flash with the original RUU then flash twrp recovery.
With twrp recovery install supersu.
Then you will be rooted.
Best way to flash the RUU.
#1 rename the RUU to 0PM9IMG.zip
#2 Copy it to the sd card.
#3 Put sd card in the phone.
#4 Boot to download mode.
Vol DWN plus Power.
#5 it should ask and say hit vol up to flash the ruu when you boot to download mode.
#6 Hit volume up.
No messing around with windows this way and it works alot better off the sd card.
