black screen - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried updating my 2.1 to 2.2 using the update software setting in my phone and the download stopped at 5%. It asked to retry and I went back to home and tried it again. I pressed resume updating and the phone automatically went to restart my phone and apply the update, even though the update was not finished downloading! Now the phone does not turn on at all or responds to common key combos. Now I messed it up for real. What are my options?
thanks

Try to find a local warranty shop. They will replace it as long as you bought it les than a year ago

-Call button
I need these buttons to gain root acess and flash new roms. Also i cant boot the phone without the charger plugged in, but the battery holds a charge though(strange right).Does anyone know if tmobile would repair it since i got it from ebay.Wifi says unable to start and bluetooth says the same thing, trackball doesnt even move so i need it for restarting after loading a new dreaimg.nbh .
Does Tmobile do repairs for phone not purshased from them?

Send it to HTC, include a 13.95 triage fee, and they will send you a replacement. It is still covered under their warranty until 22 october.

I cant even get in contact with the seller though. The item was listed as working but with scratches.Looks like i got the raw end of the deal
post a fraud alot with ebay, there are things that you can do but you only have so long to do it
Ya and file a claim with paypal if you used them
I think everything you buy on ebay nowadays MUST be bought using paypal. Both have gone to the toilet since ebay bought out paypal a few years ago.
T-Mobile won't do it since they didn't sell it to you
(and T-Mo doesn't do repairs, just warranty exchanges)
Give HTC's Repair and Support a ring at 1.888.356.2375.
Could use the good old "blame it on an OTA update" method. I know they will exchange it then. Doesn't matter who bought it, their update would be the cause so they will replace it.. Just the other day a friend of mine's ex gave him a scuffed up G1 with a cracked screen and it was bricked. He called them up and blamed Donut. They sent him out a new one. Said he would have to pay $100 for the broke screen, but not until the old one got sent back and they noted it. So if you don't care about being honest with them, this is the quickest way to get a new one. Otherwise send it to HTC.
Tmo will send you a new/ refurbished one if you have insurance on it.. Just say you got it as a gift and whoever got it for you, got it for the wholesale price.. I got mine from craigslist and it was a lil banged up and accidentally bricked it but I called and said I turned it off to charge it and when I turned it on it was stuck on the G1 screen. Since I had the insurance they sent me a new one.

Help Stuck at boot up screen.

Hey guys I'm new to android and I'll keep it short. I bought my Galaxy S about a month ago. It's unlocked and rooted and I also have the latest firmware update.
Ok so all I wanted to do was change the battery color from the stock blue to green. I downloaded Rom Manager and I also downloaded smooth-sense-1.0-Incredible-Stock-8-1 thinking that I could use it.
Well I flashed it with Rom manager and when my phone rebooted I was stuck on the samsung boot up screen. It plays the music but no animation. I've tried every single mention known to get it to boot into recovery mode. I've also tried to get into download mode with no sucess. My last option was to do a hard reset and when I tried that still a no go just stays at the boot screen wth the music.
Anything???? Is there a way to have it recognised thru usb so I can use ADB?
Thanks for your help
if you can get the 3 buttons Download Mode working

that didn't work crap
I have a video of what it's doing but I can't upload it cause i'm new.
i'll take a guess
it's going into an endless loop of the white Galaxy S logo and back and logo and back?
if I hold the power button thats all it does. Logo to black to logo to black over and over.
yup, you got one that have the 3 buttons disabled.
you can try that crazy heating the phone method talked about on some other topic, and see if that works
but the best thing is to send it back to Bell to have it replaced
you can even print the facebook where Samsung confirmed the 3 button missing is a bug, and it needs to be fixed, so it's under warranty

The main problem is I bought the phone off someone thats on bell. I'm on telus and the phones unlocked. So I don't think I'll be able to send it to bell. I'm gonna try contacting samsung
is there a method to atleast get the USB to respond to my pc??? I hooked it up my laptop with XP and when the phone boots and I shut it off with power button with USB connected then my laptop detects USB device but I can't get access to it ADB
I'm lost I have a phone with 1 Year warranty thats garbage on top of that I'd be able to fix this problem but my phone had to be one of the phones with the buttons disabled crap.
Tried the Heat trick with blow dryer but nothing.
Update:
Bell doesn't want to fix it cause "I'm not a customer" and samsungs saying Bell has to cover they're warranty.
Don't know what to do. I posted a complaint with BBB (better, business, bureau) since none of them wanna fix a Defeactive phone should have got the HTC Desire or stuck with my BB at least your able to recover the phone your self
here's a quick video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPmHeJvlb-I
Is it possible to force the phone to be detected thru USB? Sometimes if I hold a certain sequence and it goes back to the charging screen my pc detects a USB device but when I try to connect via ADB I get nothing. Does the phone need to be fully booted for the usb to work?
Well i finally got my galaxy to work. Solution sent it to a company that fixes phones for bell and warranty covered it. All they had to do is reflash it and it works i also have recivery mode working too.

Do you know if they only deal with Canadian residents? If its not too much trouble to share the info it might help others who are getting the runaround with Bell for not being customers.
that does actually reminds me Samsung do have a phone and company name listing to do their repairs here in Canada
maybe they have a similar outsourced company in the USA to deal with the Samsung phone repairs.
call Samsung USA and ask for a repair place for the I9000 model
if you mention the i9000M they will send you to the Canadian Bell, since you sent it my way anyways, there is no need for that i guess, but it is still good to know
When I spoke with Samsung USA, they said they could only deal with phones being sold in the US. They asked for the model number before they could even get a service work put in. Warranty works a little different here than in Canada because I know that if you have a problem with a certain product, you can deal directly with the manufacturer instead of having to go through the place you bought it from directly. They recommend you go through them first, but you can bypass them without too much hassle.
Everyone I spoke to in Samsung Canada said the opposite. Deal with the carrier/store for three times before Samsung Canada can intervene. It would be nice to know which companies can run warranty work without having to wait those three times and not have to worry about a receipt and being a Bell customer considering that the phone does carry a 1 year warranty. I don't understand why Bell has to initiate it cause it makes it kinda pointless.
Company is called futuretel. Email them and explain what happen and that you need the phone serviced. If you have the bill for it even better but if you don't they'll repair it based on manufacturer date.
Don't believe what Samsung Canada says that they'll deal with it after 3 times. I called bell then samsung then bell then samsung US then Samsung Canada (which is in the US lol) maybe 10X I almost gave up and threw the phone out but they gave me the repair centres phone number which was a start.
Samsung US rep was 1000 times more helpful the the Canadian one even thou it was still american. They were willing to take back the phone opposed to "You have to deal with the Carrier" I was getting tired of hearing that.
Good Luck Guys

Thanks for the info. Could be useful for a lot of people.
I agree, the people at Samsung Canada weren't friendly at all. The staff I spoke to sounded like they were based in Texas and kept telling me to call Bell without even trying to help. Samsung USA staff was very friendly but couldn't help me cause they couldn't enter the i9000M model into their system. They did sound like they wanted to take the phone back cause of the situation I was in but just couldn't get past their system's restrictions of getting a work order in. The Samsung USA staff seemed like they were based in the Philippines.

Hard bricked warranty question.

Title pretty much said it. Out of careless mistake I flashed 3 button fix stock jf6 rom over a gb rom. Hard bricked. On Odin it said the flashed is completed with no error, and success. So just wondering if there is any trace left in the phone AT&T or samsung could trace it down to fire a back charge on me? Or anyone that warranty their phone for the same reason had heard anything from AT&T. Thanks in advance.
P.S I do have some custom rom and kernels zips on the buildin flash. Is it against privacy for AT&T or samsung to check those stuff if they do manage to bring the phone back to alive?
Honestly if they can get you phone back up they are going to nuke it. You should be fine

[Q] Hard bricked my tablet and some questions

Hi all. First of all, I come here because I hard bricked my tablet (I did some research on some brick terminology.) I have some questions at the end of this thread, to satisfy my curiosity.
I misunderstood instructions and bricked my tablet. I barely had it two months. The instructions I spoke of where to install CM7 beta on my tablet (instructions here).
I downloaded and installed the files, then used heidmall to flash it. After the flash, heidmall said it was sucsessful. The problem was that it was hard bricked. No response to any button I pressed. I went on the Cyanogenmod forums and asked some questions. One of the users asked what the carrier was.. Verizon Wireless, I answered him. He said it wont boot up because I flashed a rom with a different radio or something (I dont remember all the details).
One of my questions is that, yes I did root my devices prior bricking it (voiding it.) If I send it to Samsung to get it repaired, will they be able to tell that I did root it? I did not install any roms on it (yet) or tried to overclock it; only thing I really did to use the root access was to use the wireless tether (just once). I know over clocking can make the device over heat and that leaves evidence on the motherboard, from what I read, thirdparty software. I have seen some videos about fixing bricked tablets using a program called JTAG to fix the boot-loaders. If Samsung are able to fix it, will they be able to see that it is rooted or was?
My primary question is that, can Samsung fix my device when I send it in, regarding the radio. Or will they fix it because it is rooted, or if they can't tell if it is.
I ask the evidence of the rooted device because last year, my Motorola Droid got overheated and I had to send it in to get it replaced. That device was rooted and had CM6 installed on it. I sbf'd it back to original stock and Verizon didn't contact me, so I am assuming they can't tell that it was rooted.
Another question. If Samsung does decide to repair my tablet, how much would that cost? And if they do find out it is rooted and they ask me if I wanted it fixed, how much would that cost? Estimated prices would be appreciated as well.
Another question. I have been browsing around and I found some supposedly reliable people who can fix my tablet. MobileTechVideos to be specific. I am not questioning their authenticity anything. I am wandering if I should send my tablet to them to fix it instead of Samsung. Because I am wondering if Samsung would charge me up the whoohoo to get it repaired.
I know my questions are many and seemed jumbled together. But I am curious.
answers
1- as i'm sure you were on froyo - did you patch the bootloader patch ? if not , then this is what caused the hard bricked
2- samsung will not know if you were rooted your tab , actually they will know because most of people go there with this specific issue because they flashed roms\kernels Unofficial
3- if you still under warranty they will fix it for you (for free) without any cost , all you need is a drama ( i updated via kies and then my tab off and never wont boot again ) it works 100%
4- as i heard MobileTechVideo are trusted people and they fixed alot of tabs
if you still under warranty send it to Samsung with the drama i just mentioned above and they will fix it in( a month or 3 weeks) for free
please from now on , do read guides carefully we all humans and we may miss something or do some mistakes , batter to be careful more than to be sorry
good luck
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127978
Yeah, I heard Mobile Tech do great job with only $50 dolar payment. You should let them fixed it for you..or
I'm not 100% sure, but there is 10 or 20% sammy can detect it is rooted. BUT if you already decide to send to sammy, better you make sure your tab is totally hard brick so that sammy could't detect it rooted at all. Ex:- put your tab inside microwave. I heard some person on HD2 forum do this and they manage to get brand new replacement of HD2. ;P..Just my suggestion.
haha..BUT read on this xda forum first. Do search until you are satistify your tab is screw up and totally hard brick and could not solve by you before you take my consideration..
You voided your warranty if you rooted it. Samsung will charge you to repair it because they will know. They will charge more than mobile tech, I promise. 130 from samsung is about right, 50 from tech.
You flashed a GSM rom into a CDMA device, so if you do get it repaired I recommend a lot of reading before you try again.
Sent from my "better than an iPad" tab... Running Overcome Gingerbread.
Just say it stop working , they won't know it's rooted i did the same thing and got mine replaced for free you got a year warranty.

To reply to all above questions.
1. My tablet is completely hard bricked. No response to any hard reset or download mode. The screen bares no response to anything. I can feel some heat from the battery inside, just saying.
2. Microwaving my tablet seems a bit crazy. I might blow up my microwave and I have a feeling that would damage it to where Samsung will not replace it.
3. "You flashed a GSM rom into a CDMA device, so if you do get it repaired I recommend a lot of reading before you try again." Yes I know. I always thought that I could flash it back to fix it. But I can't even get to download mode.
It seems that I got some response that 'No Samsung will not find out its rooted', or 'Yes, they will find out I rooted it and will charge me." I will send it in to Samsung to get it repaired and tell the outcome here.
Hi ripjaw27!
any update on what Samsung said ?
I need to call them tomorrow!
Ofiaich
The Mobile Tech Video guys are very good. They resurrected by captivate when flashed the wrong bootloaders on it. Very fast turn around time and no BS whatsoever. I highly recommend them if you need JTAG services for any device. In the extremely rare event that he cant fix it he'll send the device back no charge - all you're out is shipping.
CDMA and GSM roms can't be used on the opposing devices... The wifi only version, gt - p1010, also shouldn't be flashed. You WILL end up with a brick, guaranteed... Fair enough you want to try these thingsa BUT theres a reason each rom is identified as GSM or CDMA....
They received my tablet, its been a week. But I haven't received any news from them. The ticket page they sent me still doesn't have a estimated repair date. So no updates as of yet.
I'd take down the repair invoice for a device you've admitted to bricking, friend. Just sayin...

Just remembered what happened in a movie I saw.
Just for the records: Got my Hardbricked GTab repaired via T-Mo UK under warranty. Apparently they cannot check whether this has been flashed or not...
I think I might have to send my tablet back again. This time my 3G is not working after a few flashes and flashed a zimage to the modem and I bricked the modem now.... I have to find a stock firmware before I send it back. I am sad.
Ripjaw check your settings in > settings > wireless network > mobile network > names and connections and add your carrier UMTS - 3G \APN settings.
I did had the same when i flashed my GT-P1000, it is empty no default carrier settings build in..
OK mate, the 1st they'll repair under good graces but if you go back with the same or a similar problem, chances are they're going to look closer for the problem this time...

[Q] AT&T Bricked my rooted Flex :(

Hey guys,
So a little while ago AT&T pushed out an OTA for the LG G Flex, I think it was minor security fixes and G Watch compatibility fixes, anywho I opted to skip the update and live with the icon in my status bar since I didn't know if the OTA would work properly on my rooted Flex. The OS was still the OEM 4.4.2, no custom rom or anything.
Well long story short, the update automatically started and I could not stop it, next thing you know my phone goes to reboot and the following error message came up:
ERROR: Boot certification verify
[720]----------------------------------------------------------------
[720]
[720]Secure Booting Error
[720]Cause: Boot certification verify
[720]
[720]----------------------------------------------------------------
This and the LG Logo for about 1 sec. before this screen are the only things I can get the phone to do. Factory Reset menu with Power+VolDwn works but the reset does nothing. Probably no OS on the phone right now.
I'm assuming it's the OEM bootloader that i've messed up somehow and need to return to stock to unbrick.
I'm not a rooting noob, I've been doing this since '09 and have unbricked multiple phones, I just have no idea how to go about starting this, and I can't seem to find a download of the original LG G Flex Recovery...
AT&T Service Center confirmed root so I can't send it back for a new one either...
I'm getting a replacement phone (Doogee Dagger DG550) to use in the meantime, so there's no rush, I might even end up selling the flex after I fix it, but right now it's a burning hole in my pocket I still owe on, so any help would be awesome..
One last thing, I run Linux Ubuntu on my laptop at home, no access to Windows unless i'm at work, so instructions in Linux would be great but not necessary, I do a lot of nothing at work (Cricket Wireless) so I can do all this on their Windows machine if I need to.
Call att and tell customer service that the ota they pushed to your phone has it stuck at the boot logo and you need a warranty replacement. They'll never know it was rooted. They get in so many devices daily and their warehouse employees that reflash these devices don't care or take the time to diagnose the issue they just plug it up to the PC and reflash the software to it. Regardless what state its in. This is due to time, quotas, lack of knowledge, and the just don't give a damns.
They'll send you a refurbished device overnight and you'll put yours in that box and ship it back. No cost no questions.
Yup. Just did that with my girlfriend flex on Tmobile. And countless other devices over the years.

Sorry for the late reply
I already tried that, ATT told me to bring it to their Service Center, which is really just an ATT store for people with phone problems, after bringing it in they did a root check on my phone and said they cannot except it and that I was SOL. I'm fairly experienced with ADB and unbricking phones but I don't even know where to start...
