[Q] Does rooting the Droid 3 reset the phone? - Motorola Droid 3

I have searched all around and have not found an answer to this question. In case someone does not understand the question in the title, I have some things (texts, pictures, videos) that I would like to save. If I root the Droid 3, will all those things be deleted during the process?
Thank you and I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place.

everything will be the same except for the phone rooted, busybox and superuser installed.

Nothing will be deleted, don't worry.

Things to not do (or to think about) after Root...for now

The users. First off I want to make this very clear, I am not responsible for anything nor is droidxforums for any damages done to devices due to root, since it was up to the user to make the decisions they make. Thank you, please continue to read.
1. First off I am posting this for reasons that were obvioulsy not too obvious.
2. If you chose to delete anything other than something that can be downloaded from the market, YOU took that risk. You have potentially just bricked your device.
3. DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING THAT HAS "BLUR" IN ITS FILE NAME.
4. DO NOT try to flash a custom recovery via Rom Manager then wonder why your phone is stuck with a cool new Motorola logo.
5. This thread will be updated very frequently, before posting questions and what not, just post your problem, no questions please, I will be using this to help as many of you as possible.
6. Most importantly do not mess with the framework right now, there is many $600 papers weights laying around now.
7. DO NOT TOUCH BACK UP ASSISTANCE UNLESS ITS WINDY IN YOUR HOUSE OR OFFICE AND YOU NEED A PAPER WEIGHT.
Thank you.

Mynet.apk
P.S. don't removed backupassistanceclient.apk!!! It will result in a near brick if you try to factory reset after it has been removed.

We tested this last nite,, you can do basically whatever you want as long as you put the phone back to pristine condition before you do a wipe or update or whatever..
Here is the basic method that works to copy files back to the phone if you took out bloat..
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-hacks/1462-how-put-back-backup-assistant-if-you-removed-but-arent-bootlooping.html
Works with all system apks, though.

It seems that no one knows for sure.
People have been able to root, re-copy any removed system applications ( blockbuster, skype, etc..) apply the .604 update and stay rooted
Only time will tell for sure
I only deleted Blockbuster, Skype, NFSShift, and AmazonMP3/Kindle apps. Would I need to put those back on and unroot if I wanted to do a hard reset?
From what I hear, you need to put back ALL of the apps that came with the phone to apply the .604 update
Un-rooting doesn't seem to be necessary

He is correct, we have had phones with tons removed, copied everythign back with the right permissions, took out all the things that root did, basically un-rooting, apply the update, then re-root, so you will have to put the phone back to pristine before the update, but it works fine.
At least it does for now. As for the rooting, it is a huge gaping hole in linux/android, not a specific phone or phone home launcher so it will likely not be fixed until at least Gingerbread 3.0 IF THEN. Bird really smoked the monkey on this one, i would marry him if it was legal.
But yeah, dont freak out if u removed a ton of stuff, here is a complete pristine system app dir if u need:
http://www.chadhaney.com/droidXDefault/
Zanix, thanks for updating into the post, i hope it ends up helping people.
Updated OP with direct link to original .apk list
Hey,
Where can I find a list of the correct permissions? I removed like 5 apps and copied them back and still the update fails.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Check the permissions from one of the files you did not remove
I'm not 100% sure that will work
It is 644 if I recall correctly.
I think you need to check the umask for each file as well
ON the post on how to put back backup assistant it tells you the permissions for all the files in the app dir
its in the first post
So I wanted to install a status bar replacement for Droid X, which involves replacing framework-res.apk. Instead of doing it through adb, I replaced the file with Root Explorer, and it sent it into boot loop. Do I now have a paperweight? =/
I tried doing factory reset, but that didn't fix it...
Edit: It sees update.zip on my SD card in recovery mode (some file I think I downloaded before), so is there a way to maybe apply a recovery command to replace framework-res.apk?
Edit2: sigh, nvm, there is no update.zip on the SD card, I'm not sure where it's reading it from. But when I tell it to apply it, it doesn't find it either. Looks like I bricked my phone
Has anyone been using Autostarts to block the bloat from loading on boot?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
The Titanium Backup "Freeze" feature has been working like a charm for me. I've frozen all of the bloatware (the autorun stuff) and seen no adverse effects on the phone.
The phone seems to perform better without the running bloat. But this might be a placebo effect. The jury is still out...I'm testing. One thing is for sure, I feel better knowing that useless extra processes are not running in the background.
The big open question for me is how does the TB Freeze function work? Is it like the task killers or does it intercept the app on boot?
It does not change anything in the root directory since all the *.apk files are in tact for the frozen apps. This is the main reason I use the freeze since there seems to be little risk of bricking the phone with this method.

[Q] Backup phone befor Root

Hey XDA members
Been reading around on Rooting my LG optimus 2x.
I don't really have any problems with it, but i would like to remove some of the bloatware LG put on it..
I read that you can root it with super one click ? and not really worried about the rooting part itself.. but more worried i might brick it, or delete an app i might regret later..
So here comes my questions
1. If i root the phone, and start deleting stuff. and i later regret having rooted, can i just then do a factory reset and all the original apps get back ? or do i need to make a backup of the phone as it is now, befor i start toying ?
2. If i root the phone, only to delete bloatware, and then unroot the phone after deletion of the stuff i don't want anymore. can i then still receive updates from LG ?
3.When unrooting the phone with one-click will it be possible to trace that is has been rooted ?
and the last question - I hear from someone that when rooting the phone, it becomes more exposed to viruses and malware., is that correct ? or does it only come into account when you use the actual rooting to install apps from outside the market ?
Sorry for all the questions, and if they have been anwsered many times befor, tried searching but didn't really feel i got the anwsers i was looking for
Cheers
Fox
To be safe, backup everything using ROM Manager and your sdcard (internal n external).. try download your corresponding ROM (smartflash is better) just in case you need to have it totally stock.
To remove bloatware, there are 2 ways.. safer way is to use an app (i used App Quarantine). The app is still in the storage, but it wont show in the category or run it. Second, using app like Root Explorer, by browsing /system/app, you can just delete the unwanted bloatwares.

you don't need to backup, if only to root. root won't get your device bricked

Unrooting Bionic

I rooted my phone a while ago using Motofail and would like to update my phone so I can put the ICS update on it that was pushed out the other day. I am kinda a noob to hacking my phone and would really like some help with this. I have found the Motofail for ICS for once I install ICS.

This guy has a lot of tutorials on YouTube & needed files for you to download

Just download and install all parts of House of Bionic and follow the on-screen instructions. In order to un-root you need to choose option 2 then option 2 again. Check out the FAQ if you have trouble with ADB. Read the post very carefully and probably more than once but it is actually very simple.
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/4026-samurihls-house-of-bionic/
Thanks Samuri for this script, I have been telling everyone about it. Cheers!
?
does anyone know if the apps that hide the root will work or do I have to completely unroot the phone?
rooting the phone
as you most likely know motofail will root the phone, settings applications unknown sources, development usb debugging i also check leave screen on, then when usb is plugged in make sure charge only, have a good charge also on yer battery, if in 7 right click on motofail run as admin
i also like to have wifi already going and download root checker, this verifies, sometimes, dunno why, when i go to one rom or another i have to use one version of motofail or another version of it, also motooneclick worked for me also,
either way that'll get your phone rooted, i haven't done anything with ics, i did see a version of motofail for rooting ics afterwards
i'm on eclipse 2.2 which i just love, need anything else gimme hollar, skype allen-sec or yahoo allensecz
learning the bionic and this myself, been at it for about a month, learned a lot, just don't have 3g flowing yet,
so if you got that going on yours, hey gimme hollar
sincerely, mrbeav
Bare with please
I asked in a different thread but I got some things answered but not all exactly.
I keep hearing if I want to unroot my Bionic I need to use all the HoB files or FXZ. I will explain why I'm still a little confused.
I used Razrs Edge to root my bionic earlier this week after the OTA ICS update. Worked in like 3 minutes and put safestrap v3.05 on and made a backup of my stock OS. I want to restore and then remove safestrap but I'm confused on how to unroot. Since all the unroot methods seem to be based around HoB or motofail or using the Pete's files (which the links never seem to work)
What i need/want answered is how do I unroot it if I used the Razrs Edge method of rooting? With one of the methods i mentioned above work? If so, which one please and will i just follow the same method?
My reasoning is when/if JB OTA comes out I want to unroot to get it so i figured since I'm involved now, I might as well learn how to unroot it now and get it over with.
Thanks
Eric
You may want to try OTA Rootkeeper. You can find it on Google Play.

[Q] Help - Failed Root, How to Fix

I am trying to help a friend root her phone. About a year ago, she had someone else help, and they did something wrong. The result is that her phone has a Superuser app, but it's not functional and has no root capabilities - of course she can't get rid of Superuser as it's a system app.
So first off... is there a way to flash this phone back to out of the box condition? I know for Motorola phones, for example, you can use RSD Lite to flash the firmware. I know nothing about Samsung phones, is there an equivalent way?
And then to continue - how do we go about rooting it properly? Is there a custom recovery we can install on the phone so she can make nandroid backups in case something goes wrong in the future?
Some more details:
Kernel 2.6.35.7-T759UVKE8-CL205219
Build number ULTIMOBILE-T759-2.3.4-CBW-101211-1.3 - so I assume she has Android 2.3.4.
She has Cincinnati Bell, rather than a "big" phone provider - but from what I understand they just piggyback off of T-Mobile anyway... not sure if this changes anything.
I'm sorry if these questions have been answered a million times, I would just like some pointers so I don't end up in the same situation again.

Sorry - I just know it's called the Samsung Exhibit. If a mod wants to move this somewhere, be my guest. But I'd still like help if anyone here knows.
A factory reset might get rid of superuser. Otherwise try rooting again. A quick Google search brought this up: http://www.androidegis.com/how-to/easily-root-your-samsung-exhibit-4g-sgh-t759-how-to/

Help with root etc... need some expert advise

OK so I have this great ATT note 3. I have it rooted (mj5). I haven't done much with it because as far as I know I can't get a custom recovery yet Correct??
I am having issues with a few things and I'm a little concerned with the phone. For 1 I have a hard time starting up my phone some times. It seems to keep restarting and I have to keep taking the battery out and it will work after a few times. 2nd the volume sometimes gets messed up with things I do.
I've been rooting for maybe close to 1 year now and by no means a expert here but I've never failed doing it.
So here is my question, I would like to know if there is anything I can do now to get a custom recovery now that some time has gone by. I see a lot of things going on but it's all things I've never seen or read about before. I'm just looking to get pointed in the right direction from the point I'm at right blessed which is rooted with Mj5.
Or do I unroot and if so how?
also any of these options am I going to lose everything on my phone? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

At the top of this page if you just click where it says AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 3 you will see all our sections. Click on the Android Development link then search around there for safestrap by hashcode.

Rooting
So I have the ATT N900A and have tried rooting it or at least looked into it so far but when the forums say only certain version available I never find one that actually says N900A. I have seen others, but to be honest I am freshly new to all of this and I am learning it all slowly but surely. Can I get some help any one?

Those are not normal issues to have on your phone, and I don't think they are related to the rooting; I think they are indicative of larger issues with the phone. I would unroot it so it looks stock, and assuming the problems persist, take it back to AT&T.
If unrooting fixes it, ofc, reroot and do it right this time (I don't know what method you used, or what might have gone wrong)
Do that BEFORE messing around with our poor-substitute for a custom recovery (safestrap) and custom ROM's.

Sigh - always, first thing after rooting, always freeze OTA updates, and wait to upgrade before people here say it works and there's a root available!
Since you're having suspicious issues, I would want to put on clean MJ5 firmware before continuing - get the system into a known state before continuing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559715
This will erase everything on your phone.
I would hold off on rooting and first check if the issues you mentioned in the OP are fixed, and if they are, then you can chalk it up to a software problem (pin the blame on the OTA update), and follow the instructions in that thread to get root.
