GPS fix from fascinate 3G+ for Gingerbread - Vibrant Android Development

Hi,
I would like to post the fascinate 3G+ 2.3.3 Rom that the hardware seems same as Vibrant , so devs can have a look at it for a cyanogen or/and custom roms GPS Drivers.
I hope finally we have a solid driver for our GPS hardware

bump for interest

Someone push these files to CM7 and lets start testing.

Oh jesus, where have all the file pushers gone that would have torn out the gps files and tried it half a second ago?

Pretty sure the GPS hardware on the Fascinate is quite different. Isn't it even a CDMA phone?? Thanks for the effort, but I am pretty sure these aren't the Droids we're looking for
If I'm wrong, I'd love for someone with more knowledge to correct me though!

notice the title of the thread says "Fascinate 3G+" and not "Fascinate". the Fascinate 3G+ is a device sold in Canada by Telus (model number T959D, I believe). It's GSM and is basically a rebranded Vibrant.

The GPS fix WILL NOT WORK. The hardware radio is the same as an i9000.
The vibrant is very diffrent from the other galaxy s variants because its the only model that supports 1700mhz 3g. To have this band, it requires a different hardware radio.
The fascinate 3g+ may look identical to the vibrant but the insides are very similar to an I9000 other than the front capacitive buttons.

Correct but ... Radio is not needed for gps to work and also check screenshot attached

Nope Fascinate 3G+ is a rebranded Vibrant, only different is reversed volume keys which if you flash fascinate 3g+ sbl.bin and boot.bin (bootloader) they fix them selves

No need to do it because i said so after all you need to flash a compatible rom before the bootloader so you have the correct partitions on the phone .
If you flash only the rom and not the bootloaders on a vibrant when you plugin any usb lead it will bootloop.
And why? We have cyanogen support, i dont see the benefits.

Anyone else except me notice that there is an FM Radio app?
Also, I pulled all the typical GPS drivers from that update. I honestly have no idea what I'm doing, but I'll make sure to keep a record, just in case I fix anything.

Maybe I'm just dumb, but these GPS files are working like garbage on my T-Mobile Vibrant. I let it go for 15 minutes, and still no lock. I replaced pretty much ever file that had anything to do with GPS in it's filename. It was a failure.
Also, FM Radio app refuses to install.

Honestly, all the nay-sayers need to settle down a tick. Any, and ALL attempts to fix the Ginger GPS issues with the Vibrant are welcome. Hell I've even gone as far as to put a piece of copper tape across the inside of my back plate (slightly better cell reception, no impact on GPS). So keep 'em coming! I'm grateful someone at least is working on it, even if it might be futilely, since waiting for Samsung/T-Mo to do it has created nothing but a bunch of bitter pessimists. And last time I checked, bitter pessimists don't improve GPS reception, no matter how hard you flash them!
Sent from my rough sketch of a Vibrant on a brick.

Hopefully the CM7 developers take a look at those files, (mainly atinm, and Kaik541). GPS is something I personally do not care about but will make others settle down.

Need Radio Help

Hello,
My name is Brian, I'm a member here obviously.... Had the username BFielding a while back, registered in 2007 if I remember correctly, but can't access or retrieve password for that account, different email now, so now I'm BFielding80...
Heres my problem... I can't get SH!T for help on this site, maybe because it's so overloaded, or maybe some a$$hole said dont help this person.... IDK
All I know is I ask a question and they RARELY get answered.... I'm at the point I'LL ****1N PAY U TO ANSWER MY QUESTION, I'VE BEEN ASKING THE SAME [email protected] QUESTION LONG ENOUGH...
I need radio help. I'm rooted, I run all the ROMs, always Froyo based.... I've never updated my radio from what it came with.... I have radio 32.26.00.24H_4.04.00.03_2
I haven't updated because I don't want to kill my AT&T 3g.... I've read that the TMo Froyo radio will kill my AT&T 3G so thats why I left my radio alone.... But now I'm reading that the newer radios are compatible either way, so I want to upgrade it.
I know I can go back if it does kill my 850/1900, but I would rather someone to just please just recommend me a radio as well as link, I'll adb it myself...
I need a radio for best 3G and battery life would be a plus, but 3G is more important, in my area I drop to edge frequently...
THE PERSON WHO HELPS ME WILL RECEIVE $10 US DOLLARS VIA PAYPAL
Thanks,
Brian
Well, I don't want your money but you should be fine flashing this new radio (32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04). Some people say they get improved battery life and some don't. Most seem to get better reception.

There is where you will get the newest radio image, it is identical to the one found in the Desire 2.2 update. You do not have to update HBOOT if you do not want to, though I could be wrong on that one, though I didn't have to when I did.
If you do not want this version of the radio as some people have trouble with it you can flash the radio that was uploaded by enomther:

The ROM shouldn't affect your reception to my knowledge. You may have different APNs set and that could cause issues but even that is a stretch.
What 5.06 radio? 4.06 or 5.08?
Just put both radios on my SD, I'll update through RA recovery, but yall think adb is better?

you should not see any major difference between the two radios when it comes to battery life. i've been using 5.08 since it came out, i have a much more stable signal and battery life is the same for me.
you can also downgrade ur radio whenever you want... just flash the old radio through recovery... you'll be ok
Fastboot is, IMO, the most reliable way to flash a radio. I would rather not leave a brickable upgrade/downgrade up to a script, but that's just my paranoia kicking in. lol.

I'm Guess you Fixed the Reboots caused by the Framework when using EUR Based Roms? If no H / 3G / E then it just a Masked Rom on Stock Vibrant Frameworks.
What was the issue if you don't mind, I know it's in the service.jar and Barak & myslef has been looking at it when we get time... Statusbar SignalUpdate is the error, just not had much luck in finding the right part of it yet...
Sad thing is HSPA ( H ) and 3G works Perfect, but when switching to Edge is falls out & no edge service can be used..

After the 700th de-odex, there were no reboot issues.
Biggest issue now is the inability to connect to secured wifi - gonna spend the day working on that. Also if you fail to do a full wipe after the flash then it will most likely boot loop, especially if coming from JFD.
Interesting. Does this ROM contains european locales as i9000 rom? (especially interested in russian)

The only annoying thing is the TW launcher chooses the first screen as the home screen and I can't change it, but I use Launcher pro anyway.

The glgps daemon, jupiter.xml, and you! (How to make the GPS behave better)

Hi Vibrant owners!
I made a post over in the Captivate forum about how we can configure the GLGPS daemon in our phones (this is used to control the GPS behavior)
Attached are some update.zips with a new glgps daemon pulled from the Nexus S, secgps.conf and a jupiter.xml configuration inside. The GPS chipset is common among all SGS models, so this should work for you. Please try it, feedback is appreciated!
Sweet!

I know at least one model of Vibrant does (Bell), not sure about the others (CDMA does not I believe)

im saying if you've upgraded to a new rom like most here then it should have been fixed. what kind of fix are you expecting a 100/100 Sat lock the instant you turn on the GPS app?

I'm not expecting that, we all just want it to be usable like having a better accuracy.
sorry it's getting late and my brain is not fully functional ^_^ though it is sorta confusing how the same hardware can produce different results with the newer 2.2 roms.
It's not the same though.

It seems the newer antenna did fix it - the older design is unreliable so "identical" hardware can have different GPS performance depending on how much the connection has worked loose.

if you compare to HTC model like HD2, you will see that vibrant is very slow altough gps is fixed...I once use htc hd2 with MDJ mod for android GPS is real fast, never more than one minutes from start ( case compared when u totally delete gps data) I don't know how HTC did it...just for your guy to concern
My GPS has never worked and I've tried every ROM and every fix. Sure I can get a lock on 8 of 12 satellites, and I can easily get 10 foot accuracy. As soon as I try to use Navigation, it sucks. It'll jump around by a few feet here and there, and that's enough to totally throw off the navigation. All of a sudden it thinks I'm the wrong street and its telling me to turn around.
im sorry guys, that sucks. mine has been fine for a while now. and i navigate quite a bit as I am new to Cali. Initially it truly pissed me off when I was on 2.1, telling me i'm staying on the highway when i infact took the off ramp etc... lol. I'd get a replacement.
Can anyone ever say the word GPS without sending everyone into a pissing frenzy?
BACK ON TOPIC:
OP which one do you recommend starting out on for us Vibrant owners?
I highly.. very highly recommend Sombionix' Nero 3. I've used a lot of roms and this one is very very fast. And I usually refrain from saying "fast" because most phones are initially fast when new roms are installed but this one definitely deserves it even after massive app installs and use.
I tryed out the google version and it killed my GPS it sees 12 birds but won't connect to any.
Which do I install? I have a Tmobile Vibrant. You have 3 files listed. Thanks.

[REF] Gingerbread GPS fixes and the vibrant - read before posting GPS fix

I'm seeing tons of GB GPS fixes for the vibrant even though most will not work.
I saw GPS files for the bell and virgin vibrant posted here and files for the
telus Fascinate 3G+. These files will not work because the vibrant carries a different hardware radio.
The T-mobile US Vibrant is a special variant as our phone is the only galaxy s device (other than the SGS4G) that has the 850,1700,1900,2100 bands, all other galaxy s variants have 850,900,1900,2100mhz bands. Our vibrant requires 1700 3g because thats what tmobile US uses for 3G, because of this difference we need a different hardware radio, That's also why we cannot use i9000 modems on the vibrant for tmobile US The bell and vibrant are just rebranded GT-i9000's and the Telus Fascinate 3G+ looks like a vibrant but may even be more similar to a captivate because of the hardware radio. Even though they may have the same styling or name it does not work because of the hardware radio.
The Captivate has a near identical (FM Radio is not present) hardware radio that allows it to use i9000 Modems and GPS files, same with the telus fascinate.
The vibrant and the SGS4G have different hardware radios to support 21mb/s HSPA+. These two hardware radios are similar enough to allow GPS to work but remain modems non-functioning. Romans GPS fix worked but had long lock times and poorly working compass.
Heathens Gingerbread gps fixed worked on the vibrant on 2.2 very well but fails on 2.3. What I think is the vibrant may have hardware similar enough to allow some files to work on one version of android but maybe completely useless on another version of android.
Just so you guys know,
Bell and virgins vibrants ARE NOT T-mobile US vibrants
Telus fascinates LOOK LIKE but ARE NOT T-mobile US vibrants
International galaxy s vibrants ARE Bell and Virgin Vibrants
Rodgers captivates ARE IDENTICAL to at&t captivates
The i9000 galaxy s and the bell and virgin vibrants HAVE NEAR IDENTICAL RADIOS to the rodgers and at&t captivates
Tmobile US SGS4G's are SIMILAR to the Tmobile US Vibrant
Subway IS NOT Quizno's
McDonald's IS NOT Burger king
Got it? okay good.
Kthxbai
I can could not see any fix is really working.

You're going to have to explain why the cell radio affects the GPS. There's a different antenna and GPS is not controlled by the radio firmware.

What I believe is that GPS hardware is some way tied to the cell radio. Like maybe the i9000 GPS is not compatible with the vibrants cell hardware.

My guess is because we using different radio we cannot just port a working GPS modem from other carrier to our vibrant.

Just one tip philliple...when trying to sound like you know something never use the term "what I believe is". Don't get me wrong I am guilty of it also. Instead you might say "correct me if I'm wrong but..." Gives your statement an air of confidence and knowledge yet gives you an out if in fact what you said is incorrect. And I do know how old you are, we all do so respect there.
That said you are correct the GPS does require data in our case cellular data. While we can use the gps without cell data, on a wifi connection for instance, because the GPS is on a phone the code for the drivers would be written to connect to cell service. Therefore GPS files, such as drivers (some files that don't require code to the network will work, such as GPS conf.), can not just be pulled from any phone. This is why the files pulled from the Vibrant 4G work and the ones from Captivate do not.
Here is a link to a little light reading for anyone that wants to learn more about the GPS on their phone...http://stackoverflow.com/questions/33637/how-does-gps-in-a-mobile-phone-work-exactly Pay close attention to the AGPS section. This is what our phone uses. Never-mind the fact that whats written in the link was posted a couple of years ago because it is still the same priciples.

THANK YOU for posting this. It's great that so many people are trying to get GPS working, but what works for one person right now isn't going to work tomorrow or work for most people.
It's gonna take time.

Not being rude but all you did is give a long winded "our phone is unique" statement, something that anyone who has looked at this forum since getting a vibrant would realize...
Not really sticky material. Nice info though. Maybe talk the the author if the vibrant bible and you can get a link in his thread for info.... Still doubtful.
Btw, the current v1.5 gps fix from strictlyrude for the cm7 variants seems to work great for me outdoors.

I don't believe this is correct. Our phones have GPS hardware are capable of independent GPS, that is GPS without data assistance for a lock. It takes quite a bit longer without AGPS, but it is entirely possible. Try changing your GPS to standalone mode, disabling all other location services (via WiFi and via cell tower) and putting it into Airplane Mode, then launch Google Maps. You can obtain a lock.

[MOD] Bell OTA GB Radio N_01.77.33P

Created a CWM zip with the Bell OTA GB radio and successfully flashed it.
if you use this feel free to let me know if it works for you.
Thanks to NFHimself as I believe it was his leaked radio zip (correct me if I am wrong as I can't find the thread I got it from) that I simply updated.
http://www.4shared.com/file/Jcy5-1du/Bell_OTA_GB_Radio.html
Just installed it over Alien ROM. Download speeds are comparable to .30P, upload speeds are a bit better. One noticeable improvement though is that it takes less time to achieve a data connection when the phone wakes up.
can this be flashed onto AT&T?

You can, but if you're on the ATT network and have an ATT phone, then you should probably stick with the ATT radio.
Why is that?

I believe it's because the ATT baseband version has been optimized to work with the ATT towers.
For sweets and giggles I flashed this on my phone running CM7 Pre Beta 4 on AT&T and I am getting .5mbps faster download and upload all around.
*NOTE*
Seeing as how we all live in different areas of the world everyone's results are going to differ tremendously. What works for me might be sweeter for someone else. So this is just a little word to the wise.
I am NOT telling anyone to flash this on their phone. I am simply saying IF you decide to flash it, you'll most likely get way different results than I did.
It's not my fault nor the guy who made this thread if you sweet your sweet up
could i test on International with Cm7 Pb4?

Same here, I'm on ATT... seems to be better reception and everything including faster speeds. I recommended this now for USA ATT... (Atlanta GA Location)

I haven't done extensive testing but when I first flashed this the reception at home was MUCH improved. Never ran any speed tests to get numbers.
Here at work where signal is quite poor due to radio equipment my signal is also quite a lot better. Speed tests were great from a relatively dead zone in the office too. Awesome!
I'm using a Bell Atrix on the Rogers network.

2 questions, how is your phone's temperature? Specially when playing games or been using the phone for long time or multi tasking?
and if I didn't want to use it after flashing it how can I undo it?
Thx

The temperature's been fine but I haven't been paying a close eye. If it were anything out of the ordinary I'd pick up on it though.
You can flash a different radio if this isn't working out. N_01.11.30P is fantastic as well, but I think this may edge it out. If I'm not mistaken it sounds like the voice quality of calls have improved by quite a bit.

I just flashed this radio after i posted my question. Reception was never an issue for me anyways, so don't know if it has changed. I played HD game for a bit and same result as others, my phone's temp went up to 40 C in less than 10 minutes. I have not seen any radio which can fix this stupid heating problem. With Stock Froyo, never had to worry about temperature issue at all, ever since I have flashed different ROMS and kernels and radios, I haven't found any which is as good as the stock bell froyo.
Voice quality seems clearer and download speed seems a lil higher though.
I just got off the phone with my wife and this call quality has definite, definitely improved.
I talked to her at work in a relative dead zone and the call was quite clear as well. Thanks for sharing this radio!!
