So my biggest gripe with my phone from day one is the moto messaging app. Now that we have root I am trying to install the vanilla asop app.
I have tried pulling the app from my og and installing in /system/app and setting permissions right. Upon reboot the app is installed however when you try to run it it just FCs
I also came across this link http://www.droid-life.com/2010/04/15/download-new-mms-apk-with-custom-settings/ which I believe is the same mms.apk used in cm7 right now. I tried both sets of instructions, using root explorer and adb. Both give me the same result as before with FC.
Thoughts? Ideas?
I have tried with and without the moto messaging app installed as well.
bump? Anyone have any idea?
Hello, grab the APK from the OP here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1222474
It is Cyanogenmod 2.3.5 MMS, I have it working on my phone. Just install it like a normal app.

what is 'vanilla email'?
I am unable to install on Modded Hero. I really want to use this email over sense. I wonder if the install conflicts with existing email app? Maybe I have to remove the existing sense email first? I badly need unified inbox.

I have it installed alongside the stock Sense email ....((( yes I use them both, former blackberryuser...lots of email accts)))
I installed it and really like the interface, however, about every 15min it tells me I have a new email, which I don't and that's a dealbreaker for me.

Tried using it with VanillaDroid and jcase's nexus patch. It kept force closing when I first opened it up and whenever I looked at an email. Any solution?
I've been using Vanilla email for several days now. Its much quicker than htc's email app. Only issue is I can't open attachments with vanilla.

Hey, Thanks for this! I just upgraded from a Droid (with CM7) to a Droid 4 and absolutely hated the new default email app. This one actually works with exchange and I'm more familiar with it anyway.
On my CM7 Droid, there was a setting to change the color of each email account, is that option not available in this or am I just retarded and can't figure it out?
Hey guys,
Just installed Paragon 5.1 on my phone, and had a question...how do I reinstall stock apps? I really liked Samsung IM that shipped on the Rogers ROM, for instance - however when I try to run it after having "reinstalled" it (moved the apk to /system/app) it just says that the Seven service is unavailable. Is there an easy way to reinstall these apps on a custom ROM? Or am I outta luck?
PS. I tried searching the forums first, but searching causes an FC on my phone for some reason.
Thanks!

Actually, you seem to be in luck. In the themes & apps thread, Trusselo posted the deodexed versions of those .apk's. You should be able to drop the seven.apk in your ROM and have it work again. Here's the link to the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960269
Hello,
Ever since I updated to CM7. I've run into the problem that certain apps aren't visible in the market on my phone. they are present on the online market but I'm unable to install them.
Does anyone else have the same problem ? and has anyone found a solution?
(Personally I'm running Wgspoelstra's v2.9 (based on nightly .29))
Problem is solved!
solution is posted on page 2 by NL_B!
I can't find Vendetta online in the market either, and i'm running stock (rooted)
hmm I had no such problems on stock just on 2.3.4 CM7
That's because the app isn't compatible with your device (in theory).
But most of the time, that's not true. Just search the apk using other ways and install it with your favourite file manager.
Vendetta is only for tabs btw

Then, maybe it's a region problem.
I can't help.

Can you find it in the market? Its called tweakers.net

I'm using the Spanish May version of the stock rom, rooted and installed yesterday.
I can find the app in Market.
Check your "Market" parameters
Maybe you have enabled "content filtering" by mistake as I did once causing a lot of apps not to be displayed...

What you need to do is install google apps one more time. http://goo-inside.me/google-apps/. Use the 20110307 Universal, download it and install it from recovery like how you install the CM7.
I'm familiar with this problem. WG forget to include some components from the google apps.

Thanks,
I gave it a try, at first I thought It hadnt worked so i rebooted the phone and read the site and it said it would work after the 2nd or 3rd market 'start' and it actually did! awsome
Hi eniux, actually the best way to reset the market (in case it won't download, happened to me couple of times) is to clear the market data.
Go to settings, applications, click on market, clear data.
If you enter the market it will ask you to agree with terms, condition, etc. After this everything will work as it should.

160 char SMS Split for CDMA Nexus S from CyanogenMod 7
I'd been looking for a fully working MMS.apk from Cyanogenmod to use on my stock, rooted, deodexed ROM for the Nexus S 4G, and I tried literally every mms.apk on the forum that claimed to support SMS Split, but none actually worked properly. In fact, all but one of them actually didn't have the SMS Split feature at all -- they had many extra CM7 features like switching between white/black, or changing the User Agent, but "Split SMS" simply did not display in the settings.
This version was the only one I found that really does split up the SMS's, but it is missing important features in conjunction with it, such as displaying all the different types of character & split counters, etc.
I finally stumbled across this post by s3v3nXDA, and that one worked. It's version 2.3.3 according to the built-in app manager, but I'm not aware of any real difference between it and 2.3.4 or 2.3.5, and in any event, it works great.
I decided to post this as its own page, because I presume many others have been on the same wild goose chase as I've been on. I also was not able to find a flashable ZIP for this working APK, so I made my own. Attached are the working files, both a flashable zip and an APK.
Download ZIP or Download APK
Directions:
For ZIP, boot into ClockworkMod Recovery, choose zip to flash, and flash CM7_MMS_160split.zip, clear cache partition & Dalvik cache, reboot.
For APK, backup/rename existing /system/app/mms.apk, then place the APK into /system/app/ using Root Explorer, ES File Manager, etc. May need to clear caches & reboot too.
Does MMS work with it? Hmm.. Especially curious with the Nexus S 4G.
So yeah, looks like it works send/receive MMS. I'm using pete's final GPA17 rom.
Can't seem to get this to work, I get force close on start up and when I open the Messaging app. Any idea? I'm using stock rooted rom GRJ90 deodexed.
Thanks

Are you odexed still? This looks like a deodexed apk, I've been waiting for an odexed version. You could try deleting the .odex file and see if it works...

A search will find a lot of inverted app threads on XDA. You might want to try the Team Blackout inverted apps. I haven't tested them on the M8, but they work well for me on another handset.

Can you point me to the Gmail.apk you used? I've tried the Team Blackout version on Viper ROM and Renovate ROM and in both cases, after uninstalling the original Gmail app and installing the blacked-out apk, when I try to open it I just get an instantaneous force close before the app even opens. "Unfortunately, Gmail has stopped." Reboots don't change anything either, unfortunately. Also tried with and without XPosed framework installed. Any ideas?

I'm guessing you have the right file but it's designed for AOSP, like the ROM I'm running. You listed 2 Sense-based ROMs so that's what leads me to believe it...that and that the download links(that I've rfound) are usually within an AOSP ROM thread.
I got this one from the Dirty Unicorns thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2633324
(I know it's not for our phone but it's a similar phone and the rom is kit kat...I didn't have any issues with it)
