[Q] [i9000M] Installing CWM/2e Recovery - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an i9000M running UGKG3, rooted. I still have the stock kernel and have no modifications. I'm trying to get a CWM or 2e recovery that will let me install update.zip files that aren't signed.
I have tried kernel after kernel, getting bootloops with every one.
I tried signing the CWM update.zip myself but it only managed to remove one of the two errors I get about it not being signed in 3e Recovery. I tried signing it multiple ways, nothing.
I tried replacing some of the recovery files with Root Explorer, to no avail.
I also tried flashing JVQ and JVR so I could use CF-ROOT, but they didn't even get to the "Galaxy S" boot logo before it looped.
Does anyone have a solution?
Anything that works, really. A signed update.zip, a i9000m compatible kernel, a successful replacement method, anything that will install a usable recovery.
Thanks in advance,
Getinaf

I'm in the same situation as you. I have UGKG3 installed, with the rooted stock kernel via Odin. I have tried almost every custom kernel I can think of, and they all boot loop. I've tried Rom Manager to install CWM, and it doesn't work either. I haven't tried any JVR roms yet, but from what I read they should work, so I'm surprised you're getting bootloops there too.
I guess there is something different with gingerbread compared to froyo that makes the kernel more picky. On froyo I had the stock JL2 rom, and was able to install the speedmod k13e kernel to get CWM without any problems at all.
I guess we'll have to beg and plea for a dev to make a modified KG3 kernel with root and CWM recovery. I would be happy with that. I don't care about lagfixes or any other mods to the kernel. I just want root and CWM

I totally agree, that or I'll try and cook us one. I hear there are tutorials for things like root and cwm. I'm really actually trying to install juwe's smart rom, and for the life of me nothing is working. I'm sure there are more people like us out there too, it will be worth it to find a solution.

I am very tempted to make own kernel. Nice and simple: root, and cwm. That's it. Now to find a tutorial

has anyone figured this out yet?i'm in the same situation...

Just flash this kernel on top of whatever you have, it'll work... trust me!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112908
I've been running that kernel for months back then when I was still running official Gingerbread KG3 from Bell and it's the best one there is.
Installation steps :
- Download kernel
- Start Odin, make sure Kies' services are all shut down
- Select Kernel as PDA in Odin
- Put phone in download mode
- Connect through USB ... Odin should detect phone
- Hit start, reboot phone
- Enjoy, you're done!
If you have problems like FC after that:
- reboot to recovery
- "wipe cache"
- Advanced menu --> Wipe Dalvik cache
- reboot (be patient, it'll take a few minutes to reconstruct dalvik cache)
- you're done!

Did all this and nOw in a boot loop. Can't reflash as debugging is off. I flashed first tIme frOm mObile Odin ?

What ROM did you have installed when you flashed Semaphore kernel?

Please help

[Q] Unable to flash recovery ROM to make nandroid

Hi all
I am using a Galaxy S I9000 International running stock 2.1.1.
I have rooted my device using super one click (psneuter exploit).
As far as i understand it, this is the process i now need to complete:
1) Install ROM Manager
2) Using RM, flash CWM Recovery ROM.
3) Boot into recovery, and create a Nandroid backup
4) Flash Darky's / CWM / Cyanogen ROM for everlasting happiness.
I am having endless trouble with step 2 and 3.
In RM, i flash CWM Recovery ROM. But then when i boot into recovery, it still runs the old stock android recovery <2e>. I've repeated this flashing & reboot process 5 times with no luck.
Please will someone provide me with an easy noob approach, and please try to explain tech jargon if you use it.
MANY thanks!
FORGET that i read your post wrong

personally I have never used rom manager to flash CWM I always use odin and do a kernel flash you should find kernel files (.tar's) at around 6-7MB which included the CWM mod) all you need is the pit and the kernel all done in a few seconds simply reboot to download mode and use odin to falsh the new kernel.
the file I regularly use is called CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPY-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1.tar flashed it dozens of times it's never let me down I found it on this forum somewhere.
once you have that on you can install pretty much anything from recovery mode in CWM.

[Q] Help With Custom Rom installation.

Hi there,
Since gingerbread with most probably be the last update for SGS i would like to install a custom mod.
Now i have been trying to do this (darky 10 RC4) for the past 2 days.
I followed Darky's instructions then i had a problem with the CWM only accepting "edified" script.
So i downloaded rom manger and tried to downgrade ta 2.5 but as soon as i tap on the 2.5 it immediately comes up with an error, "an error occured while flashing your recovery."
this is done on a 2.3.3 JVB SGS with CWM 3 installed (orange text).
Are there alternate routes? maybe downgrading to android 2.2 installing an older version of darky and than upgrading the darky rom?
any help is much appreciated.
thanks
Download the rom CWM-zip and put it in your internal sdcard.
Download some froyo-kernel (yes, froyo) with CWM 2.5. Speedmod for example. Then flash it with Odin repartition and auto-reboot unticked. When the flashing process is completed, pull the battery and then boot to recovery (3 button combo). Now you have CWM 2.5 and you can flash the CWM-zip from there.
thanks, i wil try that.

just 1 question, why do i need t flash CWM-zip if i am already on CMW 2.5?

Sorry. With CWM-zip I meant the Darky's Rom.zip, which can be flashed through CWM.
it didnt work, u just gave up.
hopefully some new rom update that is edified will show up in a couple of months
Install supercurio hacked kernel, it has recovery 2.5 instead of 3.0.0.5. From there you should be able to install darky's rom. If the new version of his kernel is recovery 3, tell me i'll send the old one just for the purpose.
Hi,
ok last attempt
i flashed ( odin PDA, no pit and no repartition) with this link:
Kernel Download:
Gingerbread-GT-I9000-stock-kernel+hacks.tar
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=975349
while i was on
PDA_I9000XWJVB - PHONE_I9000XXJVK - CSC_I9000XEEJV3
rooted with root CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVK-v3.1-CWM3RFS
and lag fixed with CF-Root-ext4-v1.2
and it forking worked red text 2.5 THANKS A BUNCH!
edit just a problema. it is only booting in CWM.
reattempting this without the lag fix.
2nd attempt with PDA_I9000XWJVB - PHONE_I9000XXJVK - CSC_I9000XEEJV3
and without lag fix not rooting.
phone stuck looping at booting with strange sound on each boot loop
3rd attempt with rooting, but no lagfix
If you are only rebooting in recovery, did you flash the new kernel, then reboot recovery ? if yes, the easy way to get out, is to reboot in download then reflash the wanted kernel (Since your rom is installed, you can install any kernel (GB of course)) then, it will reboot in recovery again and just reboot system now. This should fix your problem.
edit : Dont forget to get CF-root 3.1 for JVB and not JVK.

ok, i couldnt do that before because i had deleted the rom form the internal SD.
and also thanks for pointing out that i had the wrong root (i worked by you never know if it could case problems)
ok so
PDA_I9000XWJVB - PHONE_I9000XXJVK - CSC_I9000XEEJV3
root CF-Root-XW_XEE_JVB-v3.1-CWM3RFS
lagfix CF-Root-ext4-v1.2-Addon
and
Gingerbread-GT-I9000-stock-kernel+hacks
and the zip is in progress.
ps it wasnt stuck the previous time, i was pressing the middle key as the selection while i should have been pressing the power button.
thanks for your help very much appreciated.
if i get some free time i will write at tutorial since i could not the solution.
This isn't development, moved to Q&A

Will this work?

Hi ya all,
Just wondering if I can do this:
1) Flash to CF-Root kernel (As close to JV7 as I can get)
2) Flash CM7.1 for i9000
3) Flash Glitch v13.1 kernel (if it has CMW, does it?)
The reason for doing this is to get past the 3e recovery console, as that's stopping me installing CMW outright (from Rom Manager) which I need to flash Glitch.
Tbh, not even worried about which version of CF-Root I flash long as it boots... only going to be on the phone a matter of minutes.
So, will it work? Is there a better way?
Thanks in advance good peeps of XDA
If you come from GingerBread Stock Rom
so you've got System 3e
with 3e can't you flash Zip file over Recovery Mode
You Had Right Way but maybe make a little mistake
If you use CF-Root, then use pls the kernel with Addon CWM (I prefer DarkCore 4.1)
So you've got System 2e, after flashing Kernel
Download
[CF-ROOT] --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 (take the one with ending "-CWM")
[DarkCore] --> http://sourceforge.net/projects/ficeto.u/files/
*Important
to do before flash CM
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
*Optional
to do before flash Glitch Kernel
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
_____
If it was useful don't forget to Thanks
Thank you very much very much diklooc didn't know about the cleaning before install CM7, could have been messy lol.
One more question, if I flash CF-Root with has CMW built into it, will I loose CMW if I flash Glitch?
If CMW will get deleted after flashing Glitch, or if no one really knows... can I flash CF-Root then get ROM Manager and reflash CMW? If I do this, CMW wont disappear if I flash Glitch? ...if CMW will dissapear after flashing Glitch this is.
I could be getting this completely wrong, plus I don't know if Glitch has CMW built in... if it does then there wont be any issues as far as I can see.
Anyone know if there is an Odin version of Glitch (I haven't seen one...)? Would save having to flash anything else as this feels like "the long way round".
Thanks again all, awesome community
You will not lose cwm from flashing glitch, indeed you will have a gucci custom cwm......
No requirement to use rom manager for cwm - that method hasn't really been used since eclair.

No odin flashable version of glitch which I have seen.

Galaxy S bootloop

I wanted to flash custom rom on my galaxy S. I flashed clean rom, then kernel with CWM, but there is a problem. Everytime I try to flash rom it ends with bootloop. I tried cm7, cm10, rootbox, miui 2.4. Every time is the same. It starts installing (only few secodns), then screen becames brighter, then restart and bootloop. I tried different kernels, roms but still same result.
ps. sorry for my english
Hi, here is a great guide to fix bootloops:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660596
Usually, doing factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache before and after intalling the ROM should fix the issue though.
I'm doing all necessary wipes, I can recover from bootloop easly but I want flash custom rom and I can't. Istalling zip lasts few second, not few minutes, there is a problem.
Sorry if this is too basic, but are you using the right ROM for your phone?
of course...
I don't know if I'll be able to help you, but can you please list the exact model of your phone just in case? You can see the different variants here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S#Variants
It is just GT-I9000. Now I managed to flash CM7.2 but if I want install CM9 or CM10 im getting bootloop and can't enter recovery mode ;o
Sorry, I can't really give you an answer with that information. If you are following the steps in each ROMs thread, you should have no problems patching as far as I know (someone more knowledgeable than me may say otherwise).
Maybe posting the exact steps you are following would help me or others to find out what the issue is.
I'm following right steps. It's not my first phone. I know how it should be but it isn't. Here are my steps:
Flash stock ROM w/ODIN v1.85 - OK
Flash CF-Root w/ODIN v1.85
Wipe Data/Wipe Cache
Phone now rooted OK
Boot to CWM Recovery
Install zip from sdcard
Select update on SDCard (cm-7.1.0 from CM site)
Flash completes in just a few seconds
Phone reboots automatically
Now stuck in boot loop
Remove battery
Go to CWM again and reflash CM7.1 zip
Now i have CM7
Reboot to recovery, facotry reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik
Flash CM9/CM10, finishes in few sec, reboots, then black screen, can't go to recovery mode ;(((
Flashing stock with odin again...and every time is the same, sometimes when I choose CM10 i see info: "Incompatible Partition Layout" so it may be the reason (something with partition, idk)
My phone has never rebooted like that, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I do know I use ODIN v3.07. I also have CWM 6.0.2.7
Best of luck finding a solution, sorry I could no be of more help.
I think CWM6 would help but I can't find this version for cm7
IGNORE ALL LINKS BELOW, they are for the wrong phone
I don't think it matters what CM you have on your phone, you should be able to upgrade CWM from recovery: Maybe not in i9000...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1843825
Doesn't work in i9000 as far as I can tell: You can also try installing TWRP, which I like better than CWM and have in a different device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1694617
Finally, and don't take me on this because is just a guess, maybe your bootloader is not working properly? I don't really remember how to do this myself:
You are showing me links to CMW and TWRP for i9001, I have i9000...
You are right, please ignore those links... I do know I patched CWM 6.0.2.7 through ODIN on my phone, so maybe that's the only way. In any case, I'll let you look for the actual links.

[Q] Went back to stock, now having trouble getting out

Dear friends,
Little background. I was on CM10 stable, but decided to I update to CM10.1 M1, After the update, had no market, however, so I tried to downgrade to CM10 stable and it bricked. So .. back to stock it is! Now I am having trouble getting out of stock. I am not new to flashing, but I never had this kind of a persistent problem.
The short summary of what I get no matter what I try is: Every kernel that is not the stock Eclair kernel has boot-animation messed up (random lines of color on screen), and I cannot enter recovery - I sometimes can boot sometimes cannot.
Steps I have taken
I went back to stock Eclair rom + non-root kernel (LINK).
I rooted (LINK)
But when I tried to update kernel to allow CWM, it bricked my phone. So back to stock, again!
I tried this a few times. Now, the latest attempt, I tried the stock 2.3.5 rom + rooted, CWM kernel (LINK... I get the phone running, but I cannot get into recovery, and no utility that has "reboot to recovery" has managed to get me into recovery.
The plea
All I want is CWM, so I can install what I want. Without it, I am stuck with Odin one-click and Odin flashable packages (Heimdall does not want to work right for me - the drivers are messed up - and trying to fix those brkeas my Odin drivers).
I have no data on the phone at the moment, I can reinstall everything if need be .. but I am out of ideas besides keep trying different roms and kernels until something gives me CWM and I am free again.
I have AT&T GB bootloaders.
thanks for any help, I will try to provide any additional info I can.

Messed up screen = wrong bootloaders. Flash Odin KK4 with bootloaders
From there, follow this link.
Finally, you can get back up on CM10.1 - Btw, you had no market cause you didn't flash their Gapps.
UPDATE .. ugh that took a while:
1) From the master list LINK, wet back to 2.1, I897UCJF6
2) From the same thread installed I897UCKF1 with bootloaders
3) rooted: LINK (I know -not XDA)
4) removed the 3e recovery lock (LINK) - this did not seem to work, but I did do it.
5) installed Speedmod kernel from here LINK - this did not boot, but it did install CWM
6) installed CM10.0 Stable from SD cadr - twice
7) installed gapps
8) just did my first boot to CM10.
This is both a record for myself for later, and for anyone else that may find this useful.
