Forgive me for not being well informed, but I have been waiting for the DROID 3 to get ROOT. And now I see that we can do just that. But what I do not see are any ROMs.
My question is what are we still missing until DEVs can start creating/porting ROMs to the D3?
SBF, Custom recovery, Patience.

I have plenty of patience. I switched from AT&T Inspire to Verizon DROID 3 the day the D3 was released. I have missed ROOT so much. ROOT'ing this is way easier than the Inspire though.
I was just curious where the DEV community was, and what hurdles it need to make until the D3 can be on that playing field as many other Android Devices.
No one wants a brick... the "hurdles" are waiting for someone at moto to leak a SBF. I have no doubt, once we get a SBF and custom recovery CM7 and other roms will be ported, and other roms will be develop just for the D3

If it's Droid then it's for CDMA. I don't think it's a good idea to try it on Milestone.
This has been repackaged as a ROM. It will not work on the milestone, under any circumstances.
Could a moderator or the OP perhaps re-title this thread in light of the fact that the update in question will not work on a Milestone?

Question is pertaining specifically with the title. It specifically states "DROID" and the question addresses if this will somehow work due to it being signed by motorola.
Perhaps, it will be helpful if there is a developer who can torn the package not to include the radio which is the only difference of milestone to a droid.

The title of this post seems to suggest that we, the Milestone owners, can accomplish this installation and it would somehow invite us to do so.
Motorola signed the Droid firmware to run on a Droid, not a Milestone. There are additional internal hardware differences beyond the radio, and there are software differences that permeate several components of the OS.

If it were so cut and dried, we'd have custom roms by the butt load.
It isn't
I really wish people would stop assuming that life is simple because almost every other android device has custom roms...
The milestone could have custom roms right now and it wouldn't make a difference, because we couldn't load them.
Here is how to update your motorola droid to android 2.2 froyo FRF84B.

Per your request, title has now been changed.
Moved to general since it isn't related to development.
This will not work on Milestone, it is built for Droid which is CDMA. Droid and Milestone are two different devices, they require completely different ROMs. There is no Froyo ROM for Milestone out there yet, neither official nor leaked.
Please be patient.
Thanks
The reason we haven't said much on the OTA is it's not entirely official. Until it starts hitting everyones phones I wouldn't say it's released. And until then, it could change! We know the leaked OTA works with our tools still. But that doesn't mean the released one will. Once we KNOW what is final, we will make a method to update without the nonsense of ruu'ing your phones. If you wait, you will get a easier time. If you are in such a hurry to get 720p, so be it.
Yeah, I'm not really understanding why everyones rushing to get this on their phone. I'm waiting. I know once it officially hits our phones it shouldn't take long until we can patch it properly and still keep our root.
Yes, this i can wait for... a good, working froyo rom ---------- that's another story...

Thanks for the update and of course all of your hard work, it's really awesome when devs keep the community informed as much as you guys do.
I as well was wondering why people were rushing to get this done on their phone so fast. I knew you guys would be patching it I also noticed that you guys now have an unlocked bootloader?!

I am a tweaker by heart, so I cannot sit idle, waiting. I'm not saying its a bad thing to wait, its just not for me and I am willing to take the risks.
what does unlocked bootloader mean?
It means our phones are completely unlocked and we can screw them up even easier than before.
I am currently rooted, but would like the contents of the upcoming OTA. I understand that I have to revert back to stock and unroot in order to install this update, since the new radio is what I am most excited about. Is this our only option to go about applying the update? I like having root access, but ultimately I would rather receive the OTAs that will be coming soon. Does anybody have any insight about whether or not there will be a way to install these updates in the form of a ROM without losing root, or should I just bite the bullet and unroot if this is what I ultimately want with my phone?

That's pretty much what this post is about. Once the OTA is final and is actually being pushed, we will get a version of it that doesn't require us to go through the current process which requires us to unroot our phones.
I, for one, can wait for the rooted version of the OTA...continued thanks to the unrEVOked team for their unselfish efforts on our behalf.

LOL. I like to think that the reason the root still worked is because HTC isn't a douche like Motorola and realized that the hackability of the phone translates to sales of the phone.
Just my opinion...

Sorry, no, they would be quite happy to close the hole. And with the leaks posting the plaintext method up for them recently, they will pretty quickly.
To be honest all you most likely need as opposed to these elaborate methods to unroot, is to flash stock recovery back (hint, use reflash with the ruu's recovery.img as the image you select!), and then run the leaked ota as update.zip. But again, I don't see much reason to upgrade until it's official and we determine the changes.

An overwrite of the stock recovery isn't possible with the locked bootloader, but with bootsrrap it should be possible to at least access clockwork
Im a n00b but im fairly certain with root now we can def get clockwork with the right code

Making a working bootstrap is the hard part
If my theory is right, it shouldn't be terribly difficult...it should just be piecing the bits of code together, like a drop and fill.
Unless new code has to be written, in which case im at a loss

No, it's not much harder than making a working recovery. If we know where the partition addresses are, it's easier than making the recovery. There are several great bootstrap authors out there, and if we could give them a good CWM Recovery for the D3, they could incorporate it into their flashers with little additional trouble.

Tenfar's recovery sucks, believe me, and his first language is not English. The person/people to ask is romracer, since he's forked the best parts of official Koush recovery and Tenfar.
However, long story short, we may be stuck for a while in the same hell the DX, D2, DX2 are: rooted Android, locked bootloaders.

Locked bootloaders suck, but atleast if we could get bootstrap, and recovery....we will have so many options!
guys,
i am still learning the android architecture, so i don't know what i am talking about
the devs over in xperia x10 mini pro, have successfully ported CWM (and before it xrecovery, and right now we have dual recovery, meaning we can use xrec and cwm both), eventhough the bootloader of it has not been cracked!!
will it help to ask them what they did?
I wrote tenfar an email asking about porting his app. It was clear his first language was not english, but hfrom what I understand he is looking for a loaner device before he commits to doing it.
I guess I thought it would be easy with root and source but clearly im mistaken. I stand by what I said, id love to team up with someone and figure it out as much as id love to donate to whomever can do it whichever happens im sure the community would be greatful
Yep i'll donate for clockwork no troubles to speed up the process, i think we can afford one more phone 8)

I don't think anyone would b willing to give up their d3, besides koush says there might be a chance it would be bricked. If we had an sbf to unbrick I bet people would agree to this.

So far it seems like the only way to even get Android 4.4 kitkat on a Sprint Moto X is to return to stock and have the OTA update. Moto X period on any carrier hasn't had much as of custom rom's thus far. I'm already rooted on 4.2.2 and would prefer waiting on a rooted custom kitkat rom to make the update process easier. Please let me know if there is such a Rom in the works.
Thanks.
