Hi,
I upgraded my galaxy s (Canadian version) to gingerbread. I came across the youtube video for Kite UI and loved the IM interface. The default screen for my message from cell contacts looks bland, I'm not talking about those apps that tie in all your online instant messaging programs, I'm talking about incoming txt messages. I'm looking for something to give my txt messages a nice UI with avatars, if it is also tied into an app that would include txt's and IM's, then that would be good as well.
I know kite ui is kinda dead in the water right now, any alternatives to achieve my desired result?
Thanks
Try Go SmS app, very nice and you can customize the whole thing. Handcent and Chomp are also good.

Which do you use? I'm trying to figure out which one to go with. The Handcent or The Stock message app. I've heard of no fix for the awake time when sending a message via stock app. Handcent is pretty cool but to me, it's not needed if the fix has been for stock app.

I use handcent. I like how u can use the bubble effect on mags and change theme to black, candidates change background color, text color, and a ton of other must have settings for a text service. I hate hate hate despise the stock message app
+1 for Handcent. lots of configuration, features. looks slick too.
be sure to configure notifications so you don't get double msgs.
I like Handcent because it pops up a window over whatever you are doing so you can send a quick reply without having to really open the full app up. I don't know that I could go back to stock messaging again.
Handcent. I love the customization, including the font packs. I also like the pop-up, but it sometimes gets a little annoying, so i could see someone not liking it.

yeah i dont like the pop up at all but i just turned that function off so it was no big deal
i just got a fascinate and I love it except for ONE thing. I hate that I cant stop the preview of my text messages when they come in. For this reason alone I want to go to Hancent or ChompSMS. However, I like the style of the stock messaging app on the fascinate. Iplayed with handcent and Chomp for hours and just cant get it customized to look like the stock fascinate messaging app.
Has anyone done this that would be willing to list the settings with me?
thanks so much!
I have Handcent and I can use all kinds of skins with it including the stock style. Confused as to why you can't
My girlfriend just picked up a used Captivate, and she's liking it so far, but the only annoying thing I've noticed is that anytime she receives a MMS (picture - from my iphone, png or jpg), in the threaded SMS screen between me and her, it shows a little preview of the image I sent (just like the iphone) but with a big "play" button watermarked over it - and when she touches it, it shows the picture and plays it like a video for 5 or 10 seconds.
Is this normal? Is there a way to remove the "play" (triangle) watermark from MMS thumbnails or otherwise change the behavior?
not from the stock sms program but there are many replacement SMS apps on the market to try, no rooting or modding needed!
I like GO SMS Profor this very reason

Thanks, I got chompSMS and it works exactly as expected.
I'm literally looking for an sms app that looks like the iphone sms. Which is the best free and paid apps?
Handcent

agreed. Handcent is what u'd be after if ur looking for an iphone-ish sms app.
That being said, it still doesnt hold a candle to the responsiveness of the stock sms app, even with the overclock.
I do however love the bells and whistles of handcent (mainly the popup box on incoming sms msgs.).

I totally agree with you Spz0, I've been using Handcent sms now since 2 days after i got my phone, the only other app I had used was GoSms which has alot of the same features as handcent, but I stuck the handcent just the same. I do have some issues sometimes though, like after deleting a message I'll end up receiving it again. I've been trying to figure that one out since day 1. However, I love that app either way.

Ive pretty much resorted to "Go" for everything but launcher. Go SMS, Go contacts, Go dialer. My opinion is that its smooth, functional, and has tons of features ( Easier contact search options for dialing ect )
Tried handcent sms and I didn't like the responsiveness. I just decided to stick with the stock sms app as it is more responsive.
Does windows phone OS support group texting? Mostly concerned with iPhone users sending a group text to me and I want to reply all back and keep a single thread of chat/text going between the other users.
Currently the best option on Android is using GOsmspro or handcent and enabling group MMS threading. Problem is this is TERRIBLY slow even on my S3 because it has to convert each message to MMS and send and upon receiving a reply back from any party member it is received as MMS and then converted and then placed into the group thread. Extremely laggy if multiple texts are sent at in a short amount of time. Just wondering how Windows Phone 7 or 8 might handle this. It's making me really consider going back to iPhone since I like to keep tabs on my bro n sis via this group texting.
I am using groupme at the moment but it's a third party system and only supports sms if using the sms push, or else MMS via 3rd party app, which requires each sender to have the app and use this separate app to communicate.
Yes, Windows Phone 7 already supports this. It works via MMS on all platforms, but that's transparent when it's built in. The WP7 implementation is pretty good; I can't imagine they'd drop it in WP8.

Thank you. Is it pretty seemless? As in sending and receiving is pretty smooth as if sending an sms to a single user? I assume that's what you mean as in it's transparent. If so, this is great news.
Most of my family have iPhone and use group message. Was using gosms but it slow like the OP said. I use wp7 for 2 weeks and their group message is fast. I return wp7 and will wait for wp8.

By transparent, I mean you don't really notice the difference between SMS and MMS when there's no image attached, since in Windows Phone the UI is identical - they're both messages in the same messaging app. But any "group text" is a MMS rather than an SMS, as far as how it's sent on the back end. It is very seamless - Microsoft's Messaging app handles both types of messages very well.
You'll see a message to/from some number of recipients with the individual recipients listed as screen space allows (you can tap to pop up the full list if it runs off the edge of the screen), and on each incoming message, the sender is listed near the timestamp so you can tell who sent it. Everything in that conversation, from any of the recipients, shows up in the same conversation thread no matter how many people you're texting. When you create a new text, you can add multiple recipients just like you would for an e-mail, etc.

I've been having trouble getting this to work. The group text I was a part of on my iPhone isn't coming through on my Lumia 920 at all. iMessage is stuck authorizing my phone number, so that may be a part of it, but as of yet I haven't found out what the issue is. Anyone else having this issue?
Apple has never been big on interoperability, but you can easily do group texts natively without worrying about iMessage.

You will have to turn off iMessage on your iPhone. You probably don't have your iPhone anymore, but what needs to happen is to unlink your phone number from iMessage. Did you do that? If not I think you can unregister your phone here:
http://holgr.com/blog/2011/12/howto-deactivating-imessage-on-lost-or-sold-iphones/
Also turn on group chat in your messaging settings. I saw this while messing with a WP8 in store.
