Hi,
When I try copy an apk file from data/app-private to my SD card nothing is copied!? Why is this? Do I have to change file permission somehow first? They are "rw-r-----"
Thanks
Phil
Root Explorer also seems to work differently on the Hero.
I've not managed to get it to do any of the things I know it did fine on my Magic - maybe another app that needs a specific Hero version?

resurrecting a dead post but
I just searched here, and this came up.
I've used:

and it works fine on the hero
I just updated from fresh 2.1 to 2.1.2 and still notice the IM app always running.
I would like to remove it. But I dont know how. Ive tried Both Astro and es file explorer, but when i try to delete IM.apk I get the message saying it cant be delete or error deleting file.
hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581976
this thread claims that removing it will break Gchat and further more The Market.
If the IM app cant be removed..how can i stop it from loading in the first place

I removed mine using fresh kitchen. If you don't want to mess with adb commands, its the way to go.

Is it possible to remove any of the bloat ware- NFL, IM, etc if we were stupid and used the official RUU that hasnt been rooted yet?
I'm regretting that decision majorly- I'd forgotten about how much stock BS sprint has.

No.
The ability to delete stock applications from either HTC or Sprint can only been achieved via a rooted device. Sorry, but your SOL for the time being.

use root explorer or manager from the phone itself, or android commander from pan piotr on this site, they are all utitilites i never leave home w/o. O, i forgot, i dont really leave that oftenXD or if its in gbits package just reflash or reinstall it to see if the problem is resolved...yay youre back. I heard everyone here saying how they missed you. THE PRECEDING SENTENCE IS FALSE. I missed you though aaaaaaaaaa JK!!!!!!!!!!! I have some stuff for you, ill pm when i get a chance.
I usually go through adb and rm the programs I don't want, however if you are using titanium backup, you can uninstall programs from there as well and that's as easy IMO.

Pretty sure it will but I have never used it. I use the adb commands in terminal. If your phone is rooted that will work perfectly. The commands are posted by Mr. Danger 7 posts above you.
I used universal androot to root my phone and I want to unroot it. I can't get rid of the superuser permission icon with the skull and crossbones. How can I get rid of that to return my phone back to normal?
The only way I was able to do this was to flash the old ERE27 passimg then the FRF91 Rom. Yes this wipes everything and takes your phone back to stock.
Not sure if anyone else was able to remove the SU icon and app without a full reflash back to the old version.
There has to be an easier way than that.
Get root explorer and go to system/app/superuser delete that is the easiest way

Is root explorer in the market? Priced in ₤.? I have android mate. Can I do it with that? Or another free app? I couldn't find a delete option in android mate.
rm is the delete command in linux. /system/app is the directory. Just use terminal and delete the apk. Don't forget to mount the /system/ dir as rw. Google should help you with that.

That's pretty much Greek to me. Are there some instructions to do that somewhere? I just want to put my phone back to normal.

I think you can delete pretty much anything using titanium backup while rooted. Then, unroot and become a slave to your device.

Do you still have root?
Actually why would you want to unroot?
Tardman
I promise you I went through this all. SU is not an "app" and cannot be removed like any app can. It becomes part of the ROM. As far as I could tell. It wont even go away if you re-flash the stock ROM.
The only way I got rid if it was through installing the passimg from boot so the whole system wiped. Then flashed froyo clean.
Everything else, including all mentioned here, did not work.
And it only takes about 10 minutes to get through the process.

I unrooted. If I just leave it there it doesn't affect anything, right?
I tried to reflash froyo clean, but I kept getting some kind of errors (see my Restore Nexus One for Dummies thread). Oh well.
I want to unroot so that I get all of my over the air updates without any hassles. I thought about jumping ship to the new Cyanogen Mod now that it's a stable release, but I just don't feel comfortable enough messing with the phone like that just yet. Although tonight I did get adb and fastboot working, so I'm making progress. Maybe one day...

All it takes is patience.
I was once where you are. Afraid of messing up my expensive phone.
I followed enough threads. Read enough wikis. Kept up with the Android™ blogs, and now?! I'm pretty good at this stuff.
Good enough that I rooted, and flashed a new ROM on a friends EVO today.
Although I DID BRICK IT for a while, I was confidant that I would find the solution on these forums.
Chance are it's happened to MANY MORE PEOPLE, aside from you and I.
No need to start a new thread. It's been asked before.
SEARCH, and YE SHALL FIND!

The problem with that is, Universal Androot no longer works after the FRG22D update. I forgot to unroot before updating and now universal androot can't unroot nor can I remove the superuser.apk since I'm no longer rooted...even though androot says I am and can't unroot. I guess universal androot is dead because I've been watching for an update and there has been no activity for 2+ months. I only used androot to enable the wireless tether option.

My first post This worked for me after hours of research
Hey I'm new here and wow this forum has ton of information. Thanks all for sharing!
Hope this help!
But for this specific problem (superuser permission icon) won't delete. After hours of looking and trying multiple solutions, only one worked. The other ones deleted it, but as soon as I reformat my phone it would come back. Got this from another forum (travisFC thx!!) and it WORKS!!
I used Z4root (off the market) to re-root, fantastic app!!
1. Re-root your phone (yes make sure your phone is "jailbroke" again) and download an app in the market called Terminal Emulator (its free)
2. Now type the following in the terminal emulator app. One line at a time and pressing enter after each line
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /system/app
rm Superuser.apk
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
3. Sync phone with google (in the settings). (Not sure what the hell this meant, but sent an email to myself, don't think you need this step.)
4. Reboot phone
5. App should now be gone, but you will probably see the NEW superuser icon (widget)
6. Reapply unrooted OS (Z4root select unroot) and wipe device .
7. Should be unrooted and the app will be gone..you can check your root status by using the Terminal Emulator app and typing "su" it should say permission denied.
FYI - I'm on Rogers Captivate.
Hope this helps...what a headache.
get rid of superuser icon
Want to rid yourself of the superuser icon and be able to take your phone back to provider without worry? Here's how and it's less steps than Thumpers way (no disrespect intended).
1. I'm assuming you have unrooted your phone and just have the annoying su icon.
2. Download z4root from market. root your phone with it. Use the "temporary root" bar.
3. Once rooted go in and out of a few apps, then go back to z4oot and press it. It will ask for superuser permission and say yes.
4. Z4root will open and then tap on the "unroot" bar and that's it. It removes everything including superuser icon.
Enjoy.
By the way I have Galaxy S Vibrant i9000M with 2.1 eclair.
Hey there xda forums,
so a while ago i bought a galaxy s, and i was pretty happy with it! rooted it, used a lagfix, and now im trying to tweak the framework-res.apk to get a glass status bar + dock.
now i know theres enough tutorials on this, and i know how the adb works, but i cant seem to 'push' my framework-res.apk back onto my phone after i've modified it.
here's what it says
Code:
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework/
failed to copy 'framework-res.apk' to '/system/framework//framework-res.apk': Permission denied
it seems i am missing some permissions. as i've mentioned, my phone is rooted, so i dont think thats the problem. anyone else having trouble trying to push apk's?
please help me out, id like some more customizing, but i cant seem to get past the 'permission denied'.
i've read a superuser authentication box is supposed to pop up when i keep the phone from going to stand by, but nothing is happening.
when i went to the adb shell and run 'su' i did get the box..
regards,
terraego
bumperdiebump,
cmon someone with a xxjf3 device must have tried adb? i really want to customize my device
I had the same trouble with ADB on my JM1 ROM, in the end I used "Root Explorer" (from the market) to alter the permissions of the system and Framework folders, to give ALL read/write access... had to reboot a few times before the permissions would stick... now adb worked first time
Just install Root Explorer, Long press on the System Folder and select Permission, then make sure ALL boxes are ticked, then browse to the Framework fodler and do the same....
okay im trying to root my phone i already downloaded the driver to sync to my cpu and the downloaded the rooting file change it to update and copied it to my phone. i downloaded the sdk file and extracted it to my c drive as c:/androidsdk. i did everting it ask me to opened up the command promt and entered cd first changedirectory space the entered c:/androidsdk/tools as it tells me to but says this the program cant find the path specified..can anyone tell me wat im doin wrong and y its not bein recognized thanks in advanced
Re-check your path. When I installed it looked like this:
c:\android-sdk_r06-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools
YMMV
PS ... note they are backslashes not forward slashed in the path
Q: still having a problem rooting my captivate
i switched it up to the backlash and it still saying no path detected...it wont enen let me root my phone saying file is not there i downloaded the root file extract it to my c drive n renamed it update i got windows 7 i then copied it to my phone...downloaded the android sdk file extracted it to my c drive.opened up the command and put in the codes and it tells me it cant find the path..am i downloading the file wrong extracting it to the wrong file??? plz help
I do it the lazy way, take the tools folder and copy it directly to C:
So it would be,
cd C:\tools
adb blah blah blah
That's an easier path to remember.

That works too ...
My point was it's clear the OP has the path wrong. Actually finding the tools folder in Windows Explorer is obviously the first step.
Also, anything he is trying to push via ADB has to be in the tools folder as well if memory serves.
Of course there is an easier way to root ...

Don't know what to tell you. Following the instructions in the post I linked to above is the easiest way I know of how to root, and has worked every time I've tried it.
If you can get into download mode, then maybe try re-flashing to stock with Odin One Click and see if that helps any. Or re-install your drivers.
So, you cant even copy and paste from your pc to phone via usb mass storage?
Use your phone, go to dev section, find unleash the beast or super rooter extreme, download either and place the update.zip on the root of your sd card using My Files or whatever. Reboot your phone into recovery and reinstall packages. There, youre rooted. Dont forget to delete the update.zip if you plan to use CWM.

You can use Sideload Wonder Machine or the Android SDK to sideload.
With the Android SDK, you just put whatever apk you want to load into the 'tools' folder and use the adb install filename.apk command.
Like i said, check the dev section for SRE or unleash the beast. One update.zip that does it all, root, bloatware removal, sideloading, etc.

What startngate said. Here in the captivate forum there is android developement, do a search for super rooter or unleash the beast. All the steps to run it are there. Works really well if you just want a stock rom with root and some other goodies. If you want custom roms i encourage you to read through the threads before doing anything.

I use this one to keep it simple.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
And I think it has the update.zip file in it... so if that application doesn't work.. you can just install the update.zip into your sdcard - reboot into recovery and install update.zip from there.
You don't need the SDK - just need to make sure your phone can be seen by your computer. I've used it on both an XP and Win7 64-bit machine at home and it works great.
To "side-load" applications - you can use the wonder machine... or place the *.apk file on your SDCard and use MyFiles or your favorite file explorer to browse to it and it should install just fine.
I'm testing my phone out with a stock ROM - and I'm rooted/sideload avail and even have a lagfix installed with all of my apps installed in under 15-20 minutes... it is a pretty simple process to root this thing nowdays
