Cannot upgrade ROM Manager (clockworkmod) without google market - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I cannot upgrade ROM Manager v4.3.2.3 without using google marketplace. Keep in mind I'm trying to upgrade ROM Manager so that I can install the google apps (which include the market). Since I don't have the latest version of clockwork mod (the latest as of today is v4.4.0.6), I get this message when I select "Download ROM":
"You must upgrade your ROM Manager to the latest version!"
Well, I cannot do that, because I don't have the Market.
I've tried so many things, all I want is the market and I'll be done messing with this phone. I've tried installing the latest google apps zip.
And I've tried installing a recovery image from clockworkmod.com's site
When I say "install", what I'm doing is:
put the .zip onto the SD card
boot into recovery
install the .zip
I can boot into clockwork recovery mode perfectly fine though.
I'd be nice if ROM Manager had a selection "update app" or something, then I wouldn't be in this mess. Also, for whatever reason, I installed ROM Manager today, and it did not give me the latest version. I wish I noticed before installing CyanogenMod on it.
Thanks for the help.

Wow, so I have no idea what I did differently, but I just randomly decided to try installing the google apps from clockwork recovery again, and it worked. To my...amazement it worked. I swear I tried that before. Anyway, problem solved
EDIT: I just Captain_Nero's post, that would've also worked. Thanks again!

Glad you have everything sorted out.

I'm having a similar issue. On a clean install when I try to download ROMs through ROM Manager I get the error message "You must upgrade your ROM Manager to the latest version!", and then it force closes. The problem is I need to use ROM Manager to download Google apps in order to access the market to update ROM Manager.
Is there any kind of workaround short of another wipe/download?

Unfortunately that link is dead. I'll see what I can find in the meantime.

[Q] Cyanogen 6 GApps

Using Clockwork, I was able to get Cyan6 on my phone but whenever I opted to include Froyo GApps in the download ROM part, I got "corrupt zip" error multiple times. Now I am running Cyan6 just fine , minus the Market et al. Any ideas?
You can get the current version of the Gapps add-on here:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/files/file/119-google-addon-hdpi-20101008/
Flash the downloaded zip either from ROM Manager or from custom recovery.

ROM Manager / Custom Recovery, unable to recognize zip. Says (bad). However, on going back to ROM Manager, was able to download and flash. Thanks for the lead though
I did notice that reboots .... haphazard I should say are happening on device now. It's fast too, {compared to stock} esp when I try to download certain apps from market....will download fine, but when the installing dialogue appears on the menu bar, it reboots. Thoughts..
No idea, sounds like something is amiss. Is it possible you have an HBOOT version that isn't playing nice with the method you used to flash custom recovery and CM6? Are you running a Froyo radio version that is compatible with CM6?
OH - and I almost forgot - did you wipe data/cache when you installed CM6? If you didn't then you may find that CM6 boots up but acts very strange and would give you a world of problems.
Wiped data and cache and that did it. Thanks.

[Q] ROM Manager not installing downloaded ROM

I can't seem to get a ROM to install on my motodroid - I have the latest ROM Manager and the ClockworkMod recovery app flashed but every time I try to install a ROM (either downloaded w/ ROM Manager or via a file saved to the SD vai the USB cable) I get the attached alert display. Alt+Ctrl+Del reboots me back to the starting point...
What's wrong?
Tom

So that key combo worked?
well.......
It brick the phone but i was able to recover from it. How can I get the apps on my sd card back on my phone.
seems like holding 'x' work to get me back from brick
I was able too restore back to the rpm i was using before i started with a backup in rom manager......awsome so now i can play without worry,,,,,, thanks so much!!!!!!
More on the problem
So, I consistently get the screen in the original post if I try to select the option presented after the download is complete to automatically boot to recovery and install the ROM - but if I install from a .zip while already in ClockworkMod, I am successful in installing a ROM. The problem seems to come with doing an over-the-air download in ROM Manager then attempting to transition to ClockworkMod to do the install. Alt-Ctrl-Del while on the screen displayed in the original post reboots and gets me back to my existing ROM...
It seems like something is not working as it should be, but it seems I have a way to make things work...
Tom
"Reboot into Recovery" also fails
I just tried to "Reboot into Recovery" from ROM Manager and that also failed (gave me the dead screen shown on the original post)...
Booting while holding x gets me into ClockworkMod successfully. I currently have ClockworkMod version 3.1.0.2 installed (it has given me the most success so far).
Any suggestions?
Tom
It seems I was wrong - I'm not currently able to boot into recovery using the x button during boot...
Tom
Getting better
I flashed back to the "current" ClockworkMod - 2.5.0.1 - and now I can "Reboot into Recovery"...
Maybe not better...
Errr My device seems flaky - I tried to install a ROM and the transition to ClockworkMod did not work again... Isn't this supposed to "Just work"?
More success yesterday
Once I got Pete's Gingerbread ROM loaded/installed (via .zip file) my problems getting to ClockworkMod and trying new ROMs seem to have cleaned up.
After performing the "e-mail connect" (to do that I had to turn off Droidwall) I was successful in downloading directly to the phone and flashing a new ROM.
Good luck all...
Tom

[Q][ROM] installed cyanogen mod 10 and stuck in a reboot loop

Hi,
I tried to flash CM10 for JB on my ICS device. (Galaxy S I) .
my CWM is a 5 version.
Now I just read that I had to upgrade to the 6 version.
When I tried to enter recovery again I saw that the 6th version has been installed.
Now - after I flashed the CM10 I dont have the google play app and obviously none of my apps.
I back up my apps using titanium backup - so how can I reinstall it now that I dont have it istalled on my phone, dont have a file manager app to get to the apk and reinstall it, doesnt have google play to re download it.
what can i do?
and, is it ok that I dont have google play? its odd no?

Why u don't have installed the Gapps?

just wipe and flash again will solve your problem

[Q] Problems with Gapps and boot problem with CWM.

Hi, I'm a noob for messing with my phone.
Although I have googled for 7+ hours I have found nothing that helped me, only things that **** me over.
So here is the story:
I decided to install Cyanogenmod 10 on my device. That worked out okay and stuff, but I couldn't install gapps. It said everything was ok but when i started CM10 gapps wasn't there. I tried 10-20 diffrent versions of CM10, all with gapps and diffrent versions of gapps but it didn't work.
Then I installed CWM. I installed CM10 + Gapps with CWM. Then I tried rebooting my device. CWM booted up. CWM boots up everytime I try to boot the device. I googled and found a file, exitrecovery.zip. I installed that via CWM but it didn't work. So, after some more googleing I found a thread on here that said to flash Boot_loader.tar onto my phone via Odin Multi Downloader. Of course, I messed that up. I tried to flash it using "PDA" instead of "BOOT". So that didnt work. I flashed it again using "BOOT" but now it shuts down after the Samsung text on screen.
I am about to attempt to flash the stock OS into my device using the Package option in Odin (Luckily Download mode still works).
Is using Package the correct way to flash the stock OS into my phone?
When I have it working again I want to install CM10 with gapps. Why didn't gapps install?
How can I install gapps correctly?
How do I get out of the CWM boot loop?
Someone please help me because I don't know what to do anymore!
EDIT: Succesfully flashed in stock firmware. But how do I install CM10 and have gapps working?
Thanks in advance,
-Spore
Easyest way to rescue your phone is to flash 3 file ROM with pit and re-partition.
one of many guides is here
Use one of multicsc ROMs (i'd use JVZ)
Then it gets little tricky when getting to CM10
First of all flash semaphore kernel for JVZ (google it)
Then I'd go through CM9 stable to CM10. Flashing guides are easy to find
Edit. Maybe u're using wrong Gapps? for CM10 gaps are from 20120606 (or something like that - newest are for cm10.1)
Got it working!
I figured everything out on my own.
Here's how I did it for anyone with the same problem:
Download the files ill list below.
Put them all on your phone's internal SD
Boot into Recovery Mode
Install CMW6014-TOUCH-CM9recovery.zip
Reboot into Recovery Mode
Clear everything.
Install cm-10-20130130-ivendor-alpha7-ariesve.zip
Install gapps-jb-20121011.zip
Reboot.
And you're done!
Files are listed down below. Since I'm a new user i have to put a dot in the URL.
The only other file you'll need is fs1.d-h.st/download/00026/J34/cm-10-20130130-ivendor-alpha7-ariesve (dot) zip
does this work for cm9?

Hello, thank you for posting this. I noticed that the one file that you said we should download looks like it is for cm10. is that correct? I have cm9.
Also, what do you mean by "clear everything"?
{EDIT} I figured it out. For any other user that has this problem-- you must ensure that you are using the correct version of gapps as others have noted.
In OP's answer to his own question, he used cm10. and the appropriate gapps for jelly bean. That didn't work for me since I was using ICS. Do not use the file he listed for cm10 unless you mean to install that specific version of cm10, which probably won't work for your phone.
Also, google took about 6 hours to recognise my account on the play store. This is apparently a common issue, and I have read multiple threads where people are not seeing their device linked up to their account after upgrading to custom ROMs. The play store app worked on my phone, but not when using an outside device linked to that account (my desktop). I called google support and they said that they had no idea what was wrong, 3 hours later, it just started working.
So be patient if you do not have the option to use the play store from outside sources right away.

Play Store "No connection error" - G-Mail related?

Hey guys,
I've got the dreaded "No Connection" error on my Nook HD+. I've tried many things to fix it. I even deleted and reinstalled the store. I tried deleting and reinstalling G-Mail. No luck. One thing I've noticed is that I can't even get G-mail to open. It opens for a couple of seconds and then closes and says "GMail has unfortunately closed".
I'm running CWM 10.2-20131102
Any ideas?
Are you sure you used the right GApps package?
Btw you should really update to the stable version of CM10.2, it works much better for me at least

I tried downloading gapps from another thread I saw and the zip file won't open, (gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip).
You know I tried updating to 10.2.1 via the update and it doesn't work. It downloaded it but when I try to update, Recovery says that it failed to open /sdcard/0/cmupdater/cm-10.2.1-ovation.zip (No such file or directory). The only option it gives me is to install untrusted zip. That sounds scary to me.
Did you try to download the GApps again? Sometimes downloaded files can be corrupted.
About the Update:
Try to flash it manually then, but do a factory reset first..
You think you already have the right recovery as you are able to boot the CM10.2 Snapshot, so here is the links you need, so that you don't have to search for them again:

Thanks for the help. I've downloaded the gapps and CM zips but I don't know what to do with them. I see them in Root Explorer but I don't know which files to run to use them.
EDIT: I think I've got it figured out. I moved the CM and Gapps zips to my SD card and then flashed them from Recovery. I'll see if that works. Unfortunately I don't have Wi-Fi here at work to check. Looks like I at least have the CM working. I have a different boot screen now, (bummer I liked the old one ). I verified that I'm running 10.2.1-ovation but every time I boot up it tells me that Google Play has stopped working.
I'd say you check again if you downloaded the right GApps version this time, but I guess you did that already...Do the other GApps work? Like Gmail, Maps, etc...
If they do, try to clear its cache. Else you could also get an apk for the play store and install it manually, maybe that will work
