Hi I am new to the Galaxy S, just moved over from Sony X10
I have looked around and can't seem to find a guide or instructions on flashing roms and kernels ?
Could someone also recommend a Gingerbread Rom and Kernel mix to flash ?
Thanks in advance

and finally the most helpful one!!

PM me if any help needed!
A few of the links didnt work my friend ?
Just take your time and go through every bit of the threads i can make sure that you will find the best ROM !!
I would say that get Darky's v10.3 EE (ime) and the link is below!
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/rom-cwm-sgs-cappy-darkyrom-xxjvr-10-3.4508/
it is the best rom you can get without OC but if you want to get OC, then there are 2 options but the latter one is preferable when it comes to OC !!
1)Get Semaphore kernel v1.6.x or Galaxian GT version and use Voltage control
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829731) or setcpu or pimpmycpu in Darky's ROM !
2)Get CM7+Glitch Kernel v12 BETA (OC'ing upto 1.7 incl. GPU ) follow the link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041532
and one more thing checkout this page for kernel flashing !!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15609632
i think these would be enough to get maximum out your phone!

Edit : i have fixed em !!
The wiki one, roms and kernels one and the last one the most important one
i have fixed em up!!
Where can I get odin from ?
Is there a guide to using odin and rooting anywhere ?
Odin is simple and follow this link for 2.2 Froyo
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/ezbase-ezrom-for-android-2-2-install-revert-back/
and same way it is for Ginger bread!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155623
in the above link check the 2.3.4 Odin3 method not the ROM!
just use it for only switchig through ROM's and Android versions but for Kernel flashing get Neldar's SGS flashing tool app from market.
If you are on Jetpack or Darky you can get a custom rom tool from their ROM DEV page or market!
and learn Gooogling the problems out!!

Just got the 16GB Tab a few days ago...
Well after scouring the forums for all sorts of info, the amount of research done on the Tab by you people is amazing ........ and still searching for more info day by day....
I wish to know which version of gingerbread is the "most stable one" ??
The asian ones which have been recently released ? Or the latest european firmware ?
Because I wish to run a stock samsung's own GB version before straightaway going in for a custom ROM like Overcome...
Also if I want the closest stock ROM based experience should I go for -
[ROM/Kernel][GSM][Android 2.3.3] ROM based DXJPE (build 23 June) by DiP7 ???
ANother newbish question will be -
If I flash a ROM and install the provided kernel with it ? Do I need to also flash a new modem file via ODIN ? or the original file stays there ?
And do I need OCLF after installing a stock/custom GB based ROM just for some speed improvements and/or does the EXT2 file system conversion give boost ? (because OCLF in my Galaxy S SL i9003 really did make overall performance better) Also the lagfix to be applied is V1+ right ? or do I also go for applying V2 lagfix in OCLF?
Thanks for reading all this and I would love to hear your ideas over these questions ....
No , no need to for the modem file after flashing rom.
I see you are in India ( me too ) so Asian rom will be better .
No need of lagfix and oc overcome is very smooth .
P.S :If you flash Asian GB please tell whether it contains Indian languages .
A good stock GB rom choice is JQ1 because it has the proper, safe bootloaders, and can be easily rooted using the Chainfire CF-Root v3.3 kernel.
From there you can go in any direction.

hey guys, i was wondering what was the best ROM+ kernel combination that u think has the best battery life for the sgs2?
I have read a lot in these forums and havent come out with a good answer.
im using villainrom+siyah kernel 2.0
tks in advance
my dear friend every rom is best here on XDA......u should try some...Keep what u like......i think we r here for this.
many guys using speedmod
This is a new question that hasnt been asked before...............search button must be broke again
all rom and kernel combi's are personal preference and chosen on the way that an individual uses their phone.
Flash one rom a week and flash a kernel a day, by the end of the month you will have been able to see which rom and kernel works for you
have fun

Hi,
The best for me is : Tweaky ROM V2 + Semaphore 1.8.1Bm + Pikachu scripts.
I'm waiting... Tweaky ROM V3 with JVT
Bye.
Hello,
I am looking to flash a new kernel to my SGS.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Currently running (Flashed it with Odin3 v1.82) -
[ROM] 2.3.4. Samsung ROM I9000XXJVR
[Kernel] CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVR-v4.1-CWM3RFS
[Kernel] In the phone it is called = 2.6.35.7-I9000XXJVR-CL425308 [email protected] #2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was able to flash it with the helpful instructions from you guys on XDA so thanks but now I'm stuck!
I will flash ICS ROM later.
Just now I want a new Kernel to make my phone faster (no lags) and to take advantage of the Voodoo sound.
So I was looking at the Dark Core Kernel (as top rated by the stickied kernel page).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So I want to clarify -
1) If I am looking for any new Kernels all I need to do is find one which matches the JVR-2.3.4 ? Like this one in the link
[[[ Apparently not allowed to post links but it is on the sourcefourge website and the file I want to flash is mentioned below ]]]
2) I just have to use Odin again to flash the "DarkCore_3.1_JVR.tar" file to the PDA section of the phone?
3) And that's it? Do I need to wipe Dalvik and all that stuff?
4) Do I need Pit files?
Thanks in advance for the help!
My good sir, from my experience, you seem to have it right. Why, may I ask would you use dark core? For the OC/UV? I'm currently running Continuum v6.1 which comes with Talon Kernel and I'm looking for a good OC/UV kernel.
hello,
wish all here a happy xmas. sorry for my bad english but i hope that i can explain my problem.
I cant find the right firmware in your list.
what i need is a brandingfree firmware. sorry but iam a noob
firmware is 2.3.5
Baseband I9001XXKPF (this what i cant find)
wed-sep-28/KST2011
csc- 9001/XEGKP2
you need more ?
and question is : which custom firmware are pos. ?
hope u can help me
lg marc
You should be able to flash any custom firmware, like Performance Edition RC2 or Cranium Rom. If you want just the stock unbranded firmware, you can flash last one on the list - 2.3.6 XXKPS. I don't know what language are you using on your phone, if it is not English, pay attention to that as well - you'll find all info in relevant threads.
@tomi555,
I flashed the regular 2.3.6 yesterday.with odin very simple and easy. like 10 minutes.
I need a custom firmware a mixed between speed and akku protection.
anybody an idea ??
lg gyver
Well I can recommend you try Performance Edition RC2, it is currenty in beta, you can wait a day or two for the final release. If you are going to install beta, be sure to change CPU governor to smartass v2. Final version will have that enabled by default. It is really fast with good battery life and no bugs (but you can have small issues with installation). You will really see a difference compared to stock rom
Or you can try Cranium rom, but I haven't tested it, seems it currently has a problem if you want to set mp3 as a ringtone. Other than that it seems to be great if you want to overclock your CPU. I don't have such needs so I'm not using it.
thx tomi
ok I have the rc4 now. but how I can update to rc6 or rc5 ?? Is it pos. to run rc6 on my i9001 ??
pls help
thx gyver
You mean Cranium RC6, of course it is possible, you can download the Odin one package from their website.
For other questions, info and installation tips check out its thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313650
thx soooo much.
I used this thread to flash to rc4.
Installation:
Installation for RC6(comin' up)
*Recovery Package (Now,easy to install!)
1)Install FeaMod Recovery
2)boot into recovery mode
3)Flash Cranium Rom
4)dont wipe cache.............and fix permssions!
thats all for update up to rc6 ???
lg gyver
Yes, I believe that's the method if you downloaded
Cranium Rom RC6 (CWM Version)
You can flash it via Odin MultiDownloader from your computer just like the stock rom if you download
Cranium Rom RC6 (Odin Version by nikagl)
But... like I said I don't have that ROM so perhaps better double-check / ask in that thread
I dont know how I can install Feamod Recovery.
If I have it to flash with odin ?? where is the ariesve file ?
or can I use the same as to flash the rom ?
lg gyver
got it.
damn this is very cool. thx to the hole xda team.
@tom special thx to u
lg gyver
Pleas post firmware link to best rom available
XXJVU Best for the time...
Not sure if it's an officially released ROM but JW1 seems to be currently the most stable ROM for SGS.
...Define 'best'?
i'd say JVT or JVU for general usage.
For something more exciting various ICS builds can be very good (although they are still RC's)
Flake x
Just a quick question. I want to give stock Rom + Custom Kernel a try. Is it possible to install any kernel via Odin or only specific one like CF-Root? (e.g. i wanna install Semaphore Kernel).
Thanks.
Oh and does the loading bug after 100% battery and on cable still exist? (Hope u know what i mean)
Upload the stock rom,root and then flash via sgs flash kernel (app from market) semaphore kernel.
