"..Scott Paul, a Greenpeace official in New York responsible for forestry issues, said Gibson for years has done "great work" to promote better forestry practices. The question, he said, is whether Gibson did everything possible to avoid buying wood from dubious sources. "We have no idea," he said."
Did they know and turn a blind eye anyway? Seems to me that if a supplier decided to lie about the source of the wood they wouldn't then go telling the buyer. "Here's that perfectly legal and above board wood you ordered guvner, nudge-nudge, wink-wink"!

Mate, Wendy James is my all time favourite hottie!
How did you know though I still have the 12" that i attained in the mid to late 80's. (Single that is, just to clarify)!
The Trans Vamp video collection is something i'm not ashamed to admit i still watch frequently. Sometimes with the sound off!
Have you seen Debbie Gibson recently? Blossomed somewhat...

I bet there's some way you could play the Kevin Bacon game with Mega Shark. We've gone from guitar factories getting raided for importing illegal black market goods, to Mega shark in like 2 moves!

Challenge accepted! (Off the top of me shiny pate):
Edit: Beaten like a red-haired step child by Casper_uk82! Well played that man!
Six degrees of seperation....
Mega Shark -> Godzilla (1998)
Go...
I've got:
Debbie Gibson was the lead actress in Mega Shark, who shares a birthday in real life with Richard Gere.
Richard Gere was in The Jackal with Bruce Willis.
Bruce Willis was married to Demi Moore.
Demi Moore played opposite Patrick Swayze in Ghost.
Patrick Swayze did the Dirty Dancing with Jennifer Grey.
Jennifer Grey was Jeanie Bueller to Matthew Brodericks Ferris.
Matthew Broderick starred in Godzilla.
I'm sure somebody can improve on that. Any takers?
My sleep deprived brain has started oozing from my ears. Probably looking for a better home
Going off topic in Off-Topic used to be the rule rather than the exception. Back in those halcyon glory days.

I think guitar manufacturers need to get with the program. Seriously, here we are in the 21st century and we're still crafting using organic matter.
I for one demand a guitar made out of carbon fibre that has lasers instead of strings and runs Android on an inbuilt AMOLED display.

They should have had light sabers that changed colour like mood rings. Green and blue for Jedi, and red for Sith. That way, they would have know straight away the "goodies" from the "baddies" (use of quotes indicates a lack of balance in the force due to their being no such thing as "good" or "bad" - just inequality.)

Well I wanna talk about the stupidity of American "football".
You see, most of the time, American "football" is being thrown and then held with the hand, and only perhaps 3% of the time it is being kicked.
On top of that the "ball" is not round. Ask any child to draw a ball and the poor child will be hard pressed (or an American idiot) to draw something that resembles that egg.
Thirdly, there is that issue of machismo that the Americans like to push. Yeah, you run around bashing people in a full contact sport. Ever heard of rugby? Those guys only wear groin protectors and tooth protectors. Not a padding more.
Suck it, American "Football"!
/This does not, in any way, bash Americans, only their version of football
//The rest of the world would like the word football back.
///Call it Handegg if you want to, otherwise you are just as asinine with your language as the Brits, who like to add an "o" in colour. (Yes, I'm Brit Eng educated. Blame the basterds who conquered us)

The game of football is any of several similar team sports, of similar origins which involve, to varying degrees, kicking a ball with the foot in an attempt to score a goal. The most popular of these sports worldwide is association football, more commonly known as just "football" or "soccer". Unqualified, the word football applies to whichever form of football is the most popular in the regional context in which the word appears, including American football, Australian rules football, Canadian football, Gaelic football, rugby league, rugby union and other related games. These variations are known as "codes."

Ok, so I need some opinions here...We had a discussion at work today where someone said that they pay you TO live in Alaska but someone else said they pay you BECAUSE you live there...And then the first person said that there's no difference in "Because" and "To"...
So, I will give you some info from Wikipedia and you let me know which one yall think is correct...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska
"Starting in 1982, dividends from the fund's annual growth have been paid out each year to eligible Alaskans, ranging from an initial $1,000.00 in 1982 (equal to three years' payout, as the distribution of payments was held up in a lawsuit over the distribution scheme) to $3,269.00 in 2008 (which included a one-time $1,200.00 "Resource Rebate"). Every year, the state legislature takes out 8 percent from the earnings, puts 3 percent back into the principal for inflation proofing, and the remaining 5 percent is distributed to all qualifying Alaskans. To qualify for the Permanent Fund Dividend, one must have lived in the state for a minimum of 12 months, maintain constant residency subject to allowable absences, and not be subject to court judgments or criminal convictions which fall under various disqualifying classifications or may subject the payment amount to civil garnishment."
'Because' is correct, if you qualify of course. 'To' suggests paying people to move there, in which case under the rules they wouldn't qualify anyway having not been a resident.
I want to live in Alaska. It is the most most beautiful corner of the world. Anybody remember the series 'Northern Exposure'?. Best setting for a TV show ever.
The problem with this idea is that you aren't the first one to have it. There are a ****ton of government leaches living in alaska. It also has the highest percentage of rapes and pedophilia per capita of any other state.

I love Alaska, I have been there many times. But I currently live in Washington state, where Northern Exposure was filmed.
And the Permanent Resident Dividend Fund is just for the people that live there, as previously stated. The best part of Alaska (besides the fishing and hunting) is how backwards the whole state still is. They have open carry laws (meaning no permits needed to carry a firearm) and it is still common for people in the winter to leave their vehicles running while they grocery shop. Nobody steals them.

Where should i build my log cabin? (Think 'Grizzly Adams' if you're old enough). It has to be near a fresh water river or lake and far enough into the wilderness so that i never have to encounter another person for the rest of my days.

You want to see some SERIOUS spiders, you should be around those freakin Camel Spiders in Iraq. GAWD! Ya, I know everyone's seen the pics of them on the interwebs. But when I was there they scared the hell out of me, cuz they are really, really freakin fast. Walking a post at night, you would see a good sized shadow "flying" across the ground. Finally, a thread about this. Can't remember the last movie I saw but there's an upcoming one called moneyball. You might want to check it out.
Bloodbath at the House of Death - very funny with Kenny Everett and Vincent Price, sort of in the English version of the Airplane/Police Squad style from the early 80's.
A New Hope on bluray aka "How that hack Lucas can screw things up even more". Seriously someone needs to buy the rights off him and remove the crap he's added, remake the prequels so they actually fit with the series, and make Timothy Zahn's trilogy as eps 7-9.
Danielle picked up a 6 film Bond box set on bluray from hmv today for the bargain price of £22 saving about £90! So we'll probably watch Dr No tonight.

I was watching the new BR Star Wars releases last week. There are scenes in A New Hope for instance, that are gritty and untouched, the way you'd expect an old print to look that then transition to a cleaned up, CGI enhanced frame and it's completely jarring! I'd like a BR release of the Theatrical versions myself.
At least the DTS audio is a good addition.

As for the movies, I would recommend "La Haine", "Zatoichi" and "The Lives Of Others" if you like a bit of subtitley goodness....
If not, go for some classics like "The Warriors" any of the Dirty Harry movies or the original "Assault on Precinct 13"....
Yeah you've seen em before but hey....
Looking forward to seeing "Troll Hunter" sometime, even though theres a pretty high chance of it being crap..
The lives of others looks good. Going to check it out..
I should probably add that as a massive movie fan i've probably seen most of what there is to see. At least among the better films anyway, although apart from some Guillermo Del Toro films i don't often do foreign language. City of God was awesome though, as was Das Boot.
I've done the IMDb top 250 as it stands now, which is where i've always gone for inspiration before:

I think the industry is lacking in truly visionary directors these days. Once Scorsese hangs up his hat we'll have none of the old greats left!

If you can source this, it has a great ending: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124198/
The name 'Evil Things' made me think of it.
Edit: Just seen a trailer for 'Killer Elite'. Probably nothing more that a good action flick, but look at the cast: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1448755/
Yvonne Strahovski, (the butt-kicking blonde in 'Chuck'), oh and Robert De Niro, Clive Owen and Jason Statham.
Finished watching "Evil Things". I give it 2/10. Waste of time. (i knew that before i watched it, but.. yeah)
One of my favourites of the modern era is on C4 (UK) right now!
The Departed 9.5/10
Dr No was fantastic, so well remastered it looked like a film made a few years ago set in the 60's rather than a film actually made in the 60's.
I know you shouldn't have cheese before bedtime, but we're now watching Roger Moore in Live and Let Die (mmmmmm Jane Seymour *rubs thighs*), again it looks fantastic in HD.

James Bond in HD. Hmm, sounds interesting! Cheese aside, they had their moments...not to mention the likes of Britt Eckland and, as you mentioned, Jane Fonda. The only movies that had a better collection of lead female stars were Hitchcocks own films!

I liked it. Films like that with atmosphere, (pardon the pun), and subtlety are few and far between these days. Reminds me of Kubricks classic, 2001 A Space Odyssey. (Although not as monumental). Another pun...sorry
Ok, it's a monolith, but monument is close enough!

This is an open discussion for drummers, about drummers, and drums/percussion in general. Please follow forum rules, and let's talk drums!
A tad bit about myself:
I'm 35 years old and I have been playing drums since I was 7 years old. My parents noticed that I was taking an interest in music, and my dad was always interested in the drums since he was a boy.
I took to it fairly quickly, and since MTV was brand new at the time, I finally got to SEE drummers playing.
My first real drumming idol was Tommy Lee from Motley Crue. I evolved into the kind of youngster that looked at every style of drumming, just in case.
But it was Rock/Metal that always got my adrenaline going. So at age 11, I joined my first band. We covered Kiss songs. Pretty basic stuff, but I loved Kiss for how over the top they seemed when I was a kid. Thinking back, it really helped me with my timing. Solid and minimal is always a good starting point. Flair can come later.
So I made kind of a career out of it. I never stopped playing, even into adulthood. I tried to always be a student of the instrument, though I was self-taught.
I stayed the course, played in some really cool bands, and I got to do things that not many people get to do. I wasn't famous, but I've had a few close calls. I developed a love for the lifestyle of playing rock n roll music for a living, yet somehow I managed to meet a wonderful woman, marry her, stay married for 10 years now. She also birthed my two amazingly beautiful daughters.
Being a drummer isn't the best business decision one could make, but I play drums because I love rhythm, I love the conditioning, I love the brainwork, I love how drums look, and I hope I can play til the day I die.
Lastly, my equipment preferences are as follows:
DW drums and hardware. Sabian Cymbals, Rock n Soc furniture, and any wood tip drumstick longer than 16". If you know what I mean .
So anyway...I really hope there are enough drummers here to make use of this topic. I am very difficult to offend, so I'm not going to be a stickler for content. Anything goes, as long as you follow the rules of XDA.
Thanks for giving your time to reading this.
Here's a dirty shot of my kit. Oops, no cymbals in these.
18x26 kick, 9x13 rack Tom, 13x16 and 16x18 floor Tom, Pork Pie 6.5x14 Big Black snare, 10x14 1976 Pearl marching snare.

I'm 42 and started playing at the age of 10. Parents signed me up with the Royal Comumbians Drum and Bugle Corps back in the early 80's. There were 65 of us, and we were a force to be reckoned with. We competed nationally, and were state and national champions 12 times over. Those of you familiar with drum corp training, know how incredibly precise it is. Stick height, posture, timing, attack, and execution were all part of our training. We also marched in tons of parades as the guest of honor. Including our local parade, know as the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade, which is known world wide.
We were undefeated national champions for several years. Corp of the year...We were a well oiled machine. Today, I don't play as much, with all the surgery I'm dealing with. In my day, I was unbeatable. And as you can tell by my username, Neil Peart has, and always will be my idol. Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Vinnie and Carmine Appice, Max Roach...I can go on and and on.
Below are a few pictures of our actual drum corp; I am in most of them. I've also included a youtube video of the stylenof drumming we did. Very technical and very precise. If you've seen the movie Drum Line, that's what we did.

Haven't cracked open the manual yet, but already annoyed that percussion sound levels are supposed to rise and fall depending on how hard you hit the pads, but my volume levels don't change.

You have my heartfelt sympathies that percussionists were the first victims of "lets replace the musician with a little black box" syndrome.
I'm not suggesting the SR18 is an adequate substitute for a live drummer, but sometimes (due to space/noise level constraints) it'll just have to do.

I believe that the programming of drum computers would fall under the category of "percussion in general," so therefore I felt it wasn't out of place to mention the glitch in my SR18.

Post about Doctor Who stuff here
Yay! We seriously needed a Whovian thread :good:
Isn't the rest of season 7 set for around Easter? Merlin was supposed to be the gap filler for Doctor Who, and that's ended, so... Wonder if there's anything known yet (proooobably not. Usually about 2 weeks beforehand..)
I still think David Tennant was way better than Matt Smith, by the way. Since we all know we're going to have this discussion anyway I figured I might as well start off early.
Also, I think the newest Christmas Special was Moffat's not-so-silent protest against Peter Jackson for stealing his two main actors from his other show. Still, haven't laughed that hard in weeks...
Not been interested since Matt Smith took over.
Every episode I catch to give it another chance seems to just have him frantically waving his sonic screwdriver around like a magic wand.
I remember when it used to only be used for unlocking doors, and only those that weren't locked with the power of script.
As for the last appearance of The Master, WTF? Sniveling whiny prat. Even Eric Roberts did a better job.
They should have cast Timothy Dalton as The Master instead.

I should certainly hope it was sarcasm...
If it was made in the US there would be 90% less plot, 80% more romance, 30% more sex, 200% more unoriginal clichés, all characters would be as flat as a penny and the plot would have more holes than a Swiss cheese. Also, it would probably star Tom Cruise as the Doctor.
Oh, and the Daleks would be Middle Eastern or Russian, depending on the year it was filmed in..

lol the only problem with that logic is the fact that apart from a few shows like Doctor Who (and anime) the rest of the world doesn't make good movies or TV shows.
O, Doctor Who has plenty of things people complain about and I've seen quite a few good American TV shows. I actually grew up with Star Trek, not Doctor Who - although Tom Baker was one of the reasons I finally agreed to try Doctor Who.
Doctor Who changes things all the time, it just has the benefit of the spirit of work like Douglas Adams (who was in fact involved for a bit) - of being able to make ridiculous changes and get a pass because it's science fantasy. Lots of the hard science fans complain about lack of hard science, although I think that's like complaining that they don't kill enough people in Disney movies.
Blink was one of my favourite New Who episodes, and I really hated what they did in the later two-parter with 11. They would have been pretty good episodes on their own, but they really ruined the Angels for me, it made them so much less terrifying - which wouldn't have happened if they had just stuck to their original conception and "rules".
Doctor Who is lucky because it's format is like Star Trek - it has the benefit of being able to do an episodic or serial format without having to worry quite so much about over-arching plot because you can easily take time out and have a "Holodeck episode" or go to another planet or whatever and focus on a unique story that will be gone within the next 24-42 minutes.
I'm actually watching an American show right now, it's struggling a bit now that they've switched from that sort of episodic format to more of a focus on the "background" plot, but they're still standing. LOST did a good job with what it had to work with, too.
IN OTHER NEWS MY SONIC SCREWDRIVER ARRIVED THAT A FRIEND GOT ME FOR CHRISTMAS.
So, not to be rude, but let's keep this thread about Who appreciation or good-natured critique of it - not liking Who at the expense of whole other countries (and I'm saying that as someone who bought a DVD box set of Jeeves and Wooster).
SO ANYWAY.
Favourite Doctor ? Favourite Companion ?
I'd say 4 is my favourite doctor, and all the Rs - River, Rose, and Romana for companions. And I guess Rory, too for the hell of it.

Well, my fav's definitely 10, and River is absolutely hilarious. Amy was great, too. (Rose bored me.)
Blink is still one of the greatest episodes of the new series. It's what eventually led to Moffat taking over from RTD as showrunner. (Which nobody minded. That whole Timelord-victorious crap was starting to get more than a little boring.)

Well, I never said the rest of the world did. Fact is they generally don't.
But the last 10 years or some the BBC makes shows with a lot more original content and plots than Hollywood does.. Think
Top Gear,
Sherlock (Don't get me started on Elementary.),
Merlin,
Robin Hood,
Torchwood (okay, that's a Dr Who spinoff.)
Parade's End (That was hilarious...),
The Office (US is a remake.),
Being Human (Again, US is a remake.),
Strike Back (US took over after S1),
Inspector Lynley Mysteries,
Life on Mars (Lol if you watched Dr Who s3's ending)..
List goes on...
Yes, the US has plenty of great shows (i'm only counting since about 2000.), but most are all either A) Character Dramas, or B) Purely Action. It's very, very rare to find a balanced show with great characters, great actors, excellently thought out plots, original ideas, good visualisation and humour. And when they do finally get one, they cancel it because it's not "What the audience needs." (*cough*, Firefly....)
And no, Game of Thrones is not a good argument, don't bother.
Leela has to be my favourite companion
Sally Sparrow would have made a great companion too.
