I was just wondering if anyone has a fix to this or anything, or if it's just an amoled problem. When I have the screen brightness turned down, all the blacks on my screen turn an ugly brown color. Is there anyway to make all blacks overall more black? Thanks

Mine look black. Just a dirty black. You sure you don't have the SLCD version of the device?

I just double checked to make sure, and it is in fact amoled. I guess what you're calling "dirty black" is what I'm talking about. Compared to my g2x lcd screen on low brightness, everything on the nexus is brown and the g2x is simply black. Its not that big of a deal but its one of those things that is annoying me lol. Is there anyway to modify this that you know of?

This doesn't sound right. My understanding of AMOLED is that blacks literally won't even light up (which is why dark backgrounds help save battery power). Each individual LED is individually lit up. If there isn't any color on the screen, it won't light up. My blacks always seem black, no matter what the brightness of the screen is.

For example, look at the status bar (gingerbread) while you change the brightness, for me as the brightness goes down, the black starts to have a slight brown color to it. Or is my screen just screwed up? Lol its not like its major, its just annoying compared to g2x

I don't notice that at all on mine. It stays as black as it was when on full brightness. Does it still happen when all the lights are off in the room?

It happens when I'm in pitch black darkness, if there's light it isn't as noticeable but its still there

Is there any way with an app like AnyCut or SQLITE to edit a field to make the screen brighter? I know this may be a longshot, but with some of the other parts of the phone being capable of manipulation, I thought I'd at least ask. I understand the drain on the battery and possible other risks, but the screen, even at 100% brightness, seems to just not be that bright..
What? I can see my screen in bright clear skies daylight.... that's a bright screen! You live on Mercury or what?
If I stand outside with my screen set to 100% and auto turned off.. I have a hard time plaing contract killer because some of the characters become extremly hard to see.. If I play it on the galaxy tab in the same conditions, the characters are easy to see.. But it is true of most things I look at on the screen.. Out and about in direct daylight, the screen just isnt as bright as it needs to be..
That has nothing to do with screen brightness. The galaxy tab is a Super Amoled screen and the Thrill is LCD. That is why Samsung phones are more visible in direct sunlight too.

Im only interested in whether or not this can be accomplished..
It can't.

I wish mine would go dimmer. I like to keep it on auto and its usually pretty good but at night it keeps my screen way too bright. If I use the built in widget to toggle the brightness it just puts it too dim. The only way to get it to a decent dimness in the dark is to use the slider. I say the screen it too bright 90% of the time.

Now that is do-able. I'm not sure how to do it though. Cm7 has the option to adjust the auto-brightness levels based on specific light sensor values.

I noticed that my screen seems a little bit brighter in higher part of the screen, i repeat it's barely noticeable, but it's seems so... It's due to screen illlumination structure that comes from high part of the screen? Is in yours devices the same?
How the hellck do people notice these things?
It's only noticeable in white and light color background
Anyone can try?

It's too hard to notice if i take a pic, as soon i lean slightly camera, the image change tonality... Maybe it could be fixed by software update, with One X , later softer version fixed screen uniformity also...
Yup in black screen upper screen seems brighter.........sply in pull down notification menu...

I have some slight darkening in the bottom left corner that's most noticeable on medium-low brightness against white backgrounds. It only bothers me when it's slow at work and I have time to harp on things. Otherwise, it's pretty unnoticeable in regular use.
Good morning guys!
When I set my brightness to all low I get purplish Grey colors, is that normal? Anyway I'm going to shop some moto x's today at mall to see if they behave the same way.
Thanks in advance.
Yes, normal. I believe its just cuz of the amolded screen. I've noticed same thing first night I bought it brand new out the box.

Normal I think to a certain degree of course.. The phone comes equipped with a Super AMOLED screen which displays pure blacks. The screen is basically off when its displaying black that's why a lot of the menus and active notify is black to reduce power consumption.
I've read in some reviews that the screen behaved like this, with purple in Grey areas.. But I was wondering why Motorola would do that in their top shelf phone, when the brightness is on the minimum value it's a clear purple color when I drag the notification bar down in the messages app.
Idk maybe cause I'm outside but the notify bar is black to me. Maybe you got a lemon

The bar is black but the shadow it makes in the background when you start dropping it is purple in mine.
Could be.. Looks a little bluish purple to me too that's just the screen I think. The nexus 5 has a LCD IPS screen they display true blacks like the iPhones.
My X has the same purple color.

That's probably the only benefit over the X.
I dig the super Amos they are power savers and durable. Screen quality is adqueate enough to be high end its a 720p Samsung panel IMHO it's good for the phone and its makes features possible.
I'm coming from an iPhone 5 and the moto x has waaay deeper black than the iPhone, everything is really gorgeous on the screen except for that purplish at low brightness levels. I personally prefer low brightness at night for eye comfort when using the phone lying in the bed. I'll try to take some pictures and post up here for a comparison.
Anyone else with this purple color too?
When the brightness is either all the way or almost all the way to the minimum, my Moto X and Droid Maxx both look this way. I just don't use auto brightness and keep it bumped up until it's no longer purplish.
Just shopped some phones today at mall. They all had the same purple color at low brightness. This was such an disappointment for me, I really loved the screen but this ruined my experience a bit.
Which values are you using at whuch brightness intensity?

Yellows just can't be gotten rid of. Beside my Nexus 7 2013 it just looks BAD.

I love the yellow tint and set it Red and Green to 120 and Blue 0.
When I read on the screen my eyes like it.

It's not that the display is not becoming white it's that the whites and other colours are so off. When I use the device I have no qualms but when I put it beside my tablet I realize how bad the colours on the display are. The N7 2013 has amazing calibration. I wish Sony adds changes calibration app of this to be like the Z's. Hue and Saturation controls are there.

I have no problems with the Yellow hue, changed recently my phone with warranty (and I was damn right, it works a LOT better than my other one).
At first the screen of my actual unit was a lot more yellow than the one of the phone I was sending back, so I was really worried. But with just a Factory reset the screen went back to what it was like on my previous Z1. Plus I went to settings and found the White Balance Settings.
Now the Yellow is gone at 98% (I have a very good eyesight) and colours are gorgeous. It blows the Retina of an iPhone 5, it is a real pleasure to watch movies on the screen. Only thing I regret is that with max brightness and low ambiant light, blacks levels looks a bit grayish. Maybe that is why AMOLED users are fan of this kind of screen, I haven't tried to see if AMOLED has the same problem.
Otherwise I don't have any problems.
My settings are 23 red 16 green 78 blue.
Just asking if anybody can reproduce this: with auto brightness turned on, if I go from a dark to bright room, brightness increases.
When I go from bright to dark room, brightness stays constant at the setting in the bright room.
On note 3, I read that it will only go from bright to dark only if the phone is less than 30 degrees tilted.
Can anybody test this out?
Mine dims like it should. You might have defective sensor or are using a poor made case

Sensor is working properly. I'm using the samsung case.
When I use lux, it works perfectly so I'm trying to diagnose the problem.
Looks mine does same thing. Maybe there is no enough difference between both rooms. I noticed one thing. Going from dark to bright - screen brightness increases, from bright to dark - stays the same. If I turn off screen and turn on again (in darker room) it wakes up dimmer.

For some reason, if the phone is on the table and I turn the light on and off, it works perfectly. Don't know if it's by design or what.
Thanks for checking though.
