So, I have looked and looked and looked and can't figure out the answer.
Everytime I try to do About phone->System updates, I get this error:
Title: Motorola Account Required
Body: "System update" is not available without a Motorola service account. Would you like to setup an account now?
Options: Setup/Cancel
Setup does nothing except timeout on some operation (and then immediately asks about location consent).
I rooted my phone. Froze apps. Got this error (didn't try before doing said operations). Unfroze all apps (didn't fix this error). Unrooted (didn't fix).
I do not want to reset the entire phone if I can avoid it ya?
Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255198
go here and do what it says..
it's for unbricking your phone (sbf)
then you will get full stock and then u will be able to update
NO,NO,NO. Don't follow what he said^^!!!.
Unfreeze all your apps. Try again. This happened to me before.

I don't think using the user-created sbf would be a solution since it puts you off the standard route, right? P3Droid said it would prevent more OTA.
I will try this again, but it's a pain in the butt. I unfroze everything. I even unrooted and tried! Heck, I even contacted Motorola support, and all they can say is, "We have not pushed the update, so don't try to force the update." I was just in disbelief over the fact that I do need to be able to at least check for updates before I can get one, ya?
Yeah the sbf wouldn't have done you any good. I would just wait

Hello,
I have a problem with my ATT Captive Android 2.1 phone.
I know (now) I did a stupid this:
Using Titanium Backup I did remove some ATT apps and also I removed google voice.
Then I start getting error message

I did Factory restore didn’t help and also at that point I couldn’t download any apps from the Market.
Did some research and I’m not the only one who uninstall it
So I reinstall them in order found on this site (Thank you very much)

And phone woks OK until I restart it, getting message again and have to reinstall
TalkProvider.apk

Factory reset won't restore things you have deleted from the phone.. You're probably going to have to Odin to get things back to normal.
I did it, no help at all, maybe I load the wrong one I found Odin one click in dev forum on this site.

That's the right one. Did you do a master Clear as well? If so and you are still having issues I bet you have corrupted NAND memory and need a new phone.
How to make the master reset?

I was going through my phone and deleting bloatware. I deleted those three talk apps and was flustered after I realized what I had done. I put those three back in the designated folder system/apps. Everything works perfect again.
GENIOUS!!! I thought I would have to flash my phone again!!! Thnx so much!
I granted the correct permissions to the 3 files after copying them to the System folder, then MOVED them to system/apps and VOILA! It´s done!
Tried to update fine it completed then rebooted then said "Did not install" but it says I'm using JH7 now. But in no way is the GPS any better...
Exactly the same experience here. I will add that I also did not get the new office application, have not checked for the updated YouTube.
Yes, I had no troubles getting the update. See the following:

Hey guys, I see some of you are bricking or not being able to update.
You can use this to flash to I897UCJH7 OTA.
Use Clockwork recovery to flash it...
Cognition is currently being rebuilt on top of this, deodexed and all that fun stuff.
This flashes the system folder, kernel, and modem.
Download:

Yes, I was rooted, but I had just done a factory restore, it returned it to factory state, although I still had the superuser app in the app drawer. I then immediately downloaded the OTA update and it installed fine. I had the new youtube and all. So I then downloaded ROM Manager and tried to do a restore so I could get all my apps back, but that F**ked it all up! I have since had to do a odin one click restore and now I cant get the update to go past 50%, so i'm SOL now.
I'm rooted using the stock ROM and did the update yesterday and it installed 100% with no problems. It did hang at 50% for around 30 seconds or more maybe.
Im rooted with all att bloatware removed. It failed at 50%, rebooted and said the update failed. However gps absolutely works now, so apparently whatever it did managed to fix at least the gps. It said jh7 in system info. Battery life still seems to suck though. I cant wait for froyo to screw everything up 1000 times worse than this.

I was rooted with the bloatware removed and with sideloaded i found a new Update.zip that removed the root and the update will download but just says "Preparing". Then says "Update is failed" and reboots says it did not complete.
Im rooted. While I didnt get the extra office app or whatnot my GPS is working at least 50 times better. I am locked onto 8 satellites within 5-8 seconds indoors. (using gps test) Going outside only makes my reception better.
When I initially purchased my captivate it was shakey at best. My OTA update said it failed but im showing JH7 and my GPS is now working well.
like everyone else. I'm rooted with stock rom and the update did not succeed. I'm hoping that when 2.2 is released, it replaces everything regardless of being rooted or not, so that I can start from a clean slate.
i tried to return to stock via odin one-click but that did not allow the update to run.
Rooted, unlocked, and successful update. Via EDGE, no less.
did anyone get it to succeed that left the bloatware removed during the update process?
Just updated got to 100 and failed. It shows JH7 even though I got a notification saying update failed. Now youtube widget is dead and software update doesnt even open anymore.
Update media scanner was running for 20 min thats why nthg was opening. If we flash the update on the web. Would that whipe everythg.

Success for me. Just did the basic root. Still have bloat and no lag fix. Something to consider, I did a reset the day before that took off side loading.
Took about a min on 3g to download, hung at 50 and 92 for about 10 seconds.

Visit the market place search for quick office. See if there is a special version there called Quick office for captivate. There was for me. FYI mine said it failed but the gps is now scary fast, it was always good for me. About 30 seconds. But I just got a no error lock inside my apartment build in 3 seconds.
i was rooted and still am. took oclf off and update succesfull. gonna put oclf back on. is there any dangers of reinstalling oclf again? this would be the 3rd time.
Mine was rooted and lag fixed.

Same situation here.
I don't think people should be getting their hopes up for a 2.2 update anytime soon though. Something just tells me it might be a while if it ever even happens, but that just my speculation.
For the most part I was just looking for the wifi tether app. So I did one click root and everything was still good. Downloaded rom manager, everything was still good, installed the clockworkmod. Phone rebooted and I had to do the update thing. Phone rebooted, still good. Installed busybox and lost the ability to usb tether my phone. Removed the busybox and got tether back. Downloaded the beast update and told rom manager to reboot into recovery and installed update, rebooted, update didn't take, did it again and still nothing. Finally booted phone and manually entered recovery mode and ran update. This one took. Now I go to try run the wifi app and it force closes. Tried to run super user app, force close. Tried to run rom mananger to restore last backup and super user fails there too. Any ideas?

Thank for moving it to the correct forum, I guess I figured since it was a problem with something from dev that is where I should post, my bad. As for the rooting twice the post said it was ok if you were already rooted.
Ok, so I used the one click root and took it back, re ran unleash and still same problem. According to the post it should install busy box at the time of the installation. It didn't, I downloaded it but it won't install.
Thanks, I flashed back with odin. I was able to install the beast, however wifi tether continually crashes with force close. I tried to update with the new install but it still crashes.

You will want to re-bloat your phone before updating or it will fail. Root will be lost but 1-click root still works on the update.

I tried checking, and get the message "Check for update is not available at this time. Try again later."
It seems something is definitely up, as normally I would just receive a message that my system is up to date.

Assuming you did not remove any stock apps besides the two Gameloft demos and just froze the apps using Titanium:
1. Unfreeze the apps using batch mode in Titanium
2. Install the update
3. Reroot using the one click method. I unfroze and updated at work and now just finished rooting again.
Yeah it's random. Have two non-rooted D3's one of them got pushed the update and the other one is stuck checking for the update. Came here to see what was up.
Got the ota update this morning on my stock D3. Downloaded and installed and the install failed and then the home screen came up but with no 3G connection. Pulled the battery and nothing happened. Called Verizon and they had me pull the battery and then do a hard reset. Still no 3G connection. Got Motorola on the phone and they had me do a manual reset, but still no 3G connection. Verizon is sending me a replacement phone overnight.
Fail. Lol

EDIT: Found the reason for the message: Social applications was set to "sync over wifi only" which was causing the message. Now I get the "checking for available update. Please wait..." and it's been going about 3 minutes so far, no update found. Does not look like data is being sent/received while it's checking, either.
Hey guys. I ran into some trouble trying to root my note 3 and got this message. Now the phone won't turn on our connect to kies to try to repair it. Try using the one click oding to get back to the stock firmware. Put the phone in download mode and flash the first step of the root procedure and then stop and make sure your phone will work in stock form first before you try rooting it again.

That's not good, maybe try a new download. Which firmware are you flashing? MI1 or MI9?
That's actually what happened when I tried to root. It would sit forever and fail due to a timeout. What I did is after the failure..I left the phone in dl mode and connected and closed the odin..then relaunched odin and it worked the second time. That's my experience and your mileage may vary..

Yes it happened to me too. I just figured it was my crappy computer so I continued to try and after the 4th try I was able to achieve root status. Like a previous commenter suggested, it's a timed out issue.
Yea. I must have tried a dozen times a dozen different ways and I was stuck. I just said eff it and got a new phone. Debating if I want to try again, but I don't feel like potentially going thru the same heart ache. Just went thru this on my Note 3 - chances are youre using a vm on a mac arent you?
Make sure you use a dedicated *windows* machine and not a vm (or at lest not a fusion VM) That was my issue, I havent tried parallels. I grabbed a dedicated win 7 machine and it works perfectly.
I was going to return it of that failed, which luckily it didnt.
Cheers
